Should 'Toddlers and Tiaras' be canceled?

The mother at the center of the “Toddlers and Tiaras” controversy is speaking out.

Wendy Dickey is defending her decision to dress her three-year-old daughter Paisley in Julia Roberts’ “Pretty Woman” hooker outfit. Dickey went on HLN’s “The Joy Behar Show” to take on her critics. She sees no problem with what she did.

Here’s my take on this. So many people watch reality TV because of the train wreck factor. But this show seems to cross a line where mothers treat their babies like toys, and it has been suggested that sexualizing toddlers like this provides fodder for pedophiles. This stuff definitely doesn’t belong on TV.

So here's our "Showbiz" Flashpoint: Should “Toddlers and Tiaras” be canceled? What do you think? Post below and tune in to our fired up debate exclusively on "Showbiz Tonight" at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HLN.

Don't buy the sponsors products, take their money away. Don't watch that network for a week, hit their ratings. Call CPS on every mother and father who does kind of thing, for some reason everyone is concentrating on the mother's role in this and the vast majority of father's are also active participants. These father's are funding this kind of thing primarily and should be held just as accountable as the mother's if they are. Create a list of costume designers who create these costumes and put it on the internet so everyone discontinues buying from them. Last but not least it takes a village to raise a child, that being said it is up to everyone who knows a mother/father doing this kind of thing to speak out and hold them accountable. Family members should be proactive and demand these children be allowed to live their lives as children with normal childhoods free of exploitation. Parents should have mental health evals if they are doing this as well.

These overweight, dumpy-frumpy 'baby makers' should be charged criminally for child abuse! The mental & emotional abuse that these children endure, simply to allow a parent to live an 'alternate life by proxy' is akin to Munchhausen-By-Proxy!! The show should be cancelled. If not, it's sponsors should be boycotted!

Last I checked, this was America, and no one can tell anyone else how to raise their children as long as they are not endangering them. If some lady wants to live vicariously through her daughter at a pageant, then so be it, who in the hell are you to tell them they are wrong? As for the show, well that is a different story...

This whole situation is an 'adult' argument. I have seen the show and the kids seem to want to be on it. Pro's= kids get to play dress up, we get to see their adorable actions and not so adorable fits. Cons= promotes pedophilia, Someone always loses, some mothers do push their children and/or bribe them to do what they want on the show. I think the majority of these children will grow up with a complex and I agree that they are taking it too far but alas, 'to each their own'. Bottom line, i would allow my little girl to dress like that in our home but on national television in front of potential pedophiles..... imagine what those sicko's are doing with the video's from that show pageant parents!!! I think I am going to vomit!!

What is child abuse? It is defined as mistreatment of a child by a parent or guardian.

What is the definition of mistreatment? the practice of treating someone badly.

Why do people treat others badly? They plainly just dont care about anyone but themselves.

Why do they behave this way? They are selfish and ignorant and downright phony.

Easy solution, Don't watch it if you don't like it! Turn the channel! Some people just seem to not be able to do that and have obivously watched the show so they can complain! By the way Paisley's outfit covered more of her body then most children's swimsuits and even more then any teen's bikini or even some of their outfits. I bet I could find something about everyone of you that I didn't agree on how you raise your child and what you allow your child to do. Simple solution: It's America if you don't like what you are watching get up and change the channel if you don't want your child to watch it, there are parental blocks learn how to use them. People need to stop trying control what others are watching and trying to argue with them about it. GET UP AND CHANGE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!!

Well Trish the Dish, if you have girls that are serious about dancing, they better get use to the hard backlash the Miss Abbey gives out. Most of those children want to be come dancing stars when they are older and what she says to them will be the least of their problems. I have been at broadway auditions where a young woman had 1 day along with over a 100 girls to learn 4 dances for one spot, where every day people were cut and worked over. Guess what no complaints from them, it was part of their lives and you can bet they had a dance instructor that prepared them for it. This a case where mothers as hard as it is for them need to back off and let the instructor they pay for do her job!!

That was all in the first and last episode I saw. But wait! There's more! One parent was getting her 4 year old spray tanned. Not only should it be cancelled, but the moms need to have a little visit from Child Protective Services. If moms in the "real world" fed their kids sugar cubes and cheetos, they would be charged with child abuse. Do any of these women remember Jon Bene Ramsay? What good is being gained...or communicated by this show? I am not gathering any positive messages about these mothers, about their children or the pagents. I'm afraid non-U.S.A. viewers are just learning some negative things about mothers, children and pagents in the U.S.A. Go ahead and cancel it. We don't need this in our living rooms each week. The few people who really want to participate in twisted reality, can buy tickets and see it for themselves, thank you very much.

If are daughters are taught they need to dress like this to be beautiful, how will they be when they grow up? Anorexia and other eating disorders could arise. That just touches the tip of a very big iceberg that could happen to these girls. For crying out loud, there was something about giving them Pixie Stix – it is called "Pageant Crack"!!! As far as pedophiles, that is very rough topic. If you have ever been through it, or been close to someone that has you would never do this to your daughters, and would be sickened at those who do.

These reality shows involving children should all be cancelled. The Dance Moms show is just as bad. Mothers
forcing children to dance so they can relive their own dreams is abuse. The mother of Maddie sent her younger daughter

Why are the networks allowed to subsidize child abuse? Isn't there a regulatory agency that can stop this?

Everyone still seems to be missing the point. These pageants have been around for 40-50 years, at least. They'll still be around even if the show is canceled. At least now the world gets to see what's going on. If you're outraged by what you see, think about changing the pageants that attract this sort of behavior rather than canceling a show that's just "putting it on tape."

My cousin was in pageants and at 7 could tell you what she did wrong and what was wrong with her face or body as to why she didnt win. I'm ok with the idea of pageants, kids with natural beauty and talent, but forcing this with fake hair, tans, and the teeth and makeup is just wrong. Spending thousands of dollars for some sparkly clothes and makeup just to win a couple of hundred bucks that the kids will never see is pointless.

I believe that pageants a great way to girls to learn to be confident, poised, and learn a great sense of who a women should be. Not all pageant nor pageant moms are as they are on these shows. Pageants are like football for boys parents push their little boys in sports all the time and you do not see people bashing them. I will strongly agree that some of these mothers are 100% rediculous but I am sure its all for the show. Little girls have always been taught to play dress up this is nothing more then an expensive dress up party for these little girls. If it is done properly these moms are only teaching their daughters to get on stage embrace who they and shaping them for a strong future! Most, maybe not all of these little girls will have the confidence to walk into a room of people and and interview for college or a job and have the ability to stand out and take what they want. If you believe everything you see on a REALITY t.v. show then I suggest you need to get out and maybe read a book, take a walk, enjoy the better things in life then a t.v.

Well, for starters, I've learned that this show is ridiculous in an insane way and have probably watched three minutes of it all together. And most of those three minutes was from the previews. This show and So many others that TLC is now showing should be cancelled period. I do not even watch TLC anymore. They have nothing to offer.
I wonder where the CPS are? This show has so many abuses that should not go unpunished. AND YET, CPS goes and punishes those who truly are trying to get their lives and kids in a better situation. I've seen it happen over and over again. A child gets hit on the bottom for acting out and CPS swoops in and takes the child away. Leave a child at home for one hour with a next door neighbor watching them and CPS comes in and takes the child away...and yet, the parents on shows like this and pagents all over are allowed to abuse their kids. CPS is a bunch of bull sometimes. And yet they say they are under staffed and overworked. Go after the REAL abusers. Then they can say they are understaffed and overworked.

Wow. I knew how people would respond, and I would have responded the same myself had I not watched the show. I might not agree with all the decisions made by these parents, but I really think that accusing these parents of child abuse is pretty ridiculous (with the exception of the botox woman). By and large, these parents spend more time with their children than most getting ready for pageants, and the kids enjoy doing them. It may not be my thing or yours, and it might seem frivolous, but winners have to practice and work for their goals, like with any other activity. I'll bet it helps their social skills later in life as well, like accepting feedback and public speaking.

While most on here are slamming this show, there are 1,000 "commercial" on television as I am typing that are crude, rude, and disgusting. How about if you think this show is bad; what's going to stop the disgusting commercials that run daily on our televisions? This must not be child abuse or these people would have been arrested. Pedophiles don't need fodder; but they could find that on any channel or show, not just this one. This show could be a valuable learning tool for some as to how "not" to raise your children. Just remember, most things on television aren't really beneficial in this world.

Can we please stop trying to decide for everyone what should be on TV? Who cares? Few things are quality. A lack of ratings is the only thing that will get this riduculous show cancelled. I don't watch it- if you hate it, don't watch it either. Don't police everyone else. And we should really be careful about spouting what things should be made illegal because somebody will ultimately end up being offended by something YOU like and try to have it shut down. There are actually much more disgusting, neglegent, abusive parents to focus our attention on.

I can't believe how much controversy this is causing. These girls are entertainers that put on costumes to perform a show. There would be no difference to a pedophile if the girl was in a movie dressed in pajamas. So take the show off the air but the pageants will continue on with these girls performing their little hearts out.

I beg to differ. These girls are not 'entertainers'. These girls are innocent minors whose mothers are filling their heads with the idea that they have to be made up, dressed up, faked up, beautiful and doll-like to get everyone else's big stamp of approval. They are exploiting their children for their own personal gain/recognition, and teaching their children to exploit themselves. After being brain-washed from birth that 'I have to be gorgeous to matter', if any one of those poor kids ever suffers a disfiguring disease/injury, well...they'd better put them on suicide watch!

I think I've seen parts of 1 or 2 episodes of this show (channel surfing) and never understood WHY a show like this would be aired, in the first place. If it was technologically possible to identify every TV set tuning-in this show, my bet is law enforcement would find it easy to round-up (in a single day) more pedofiles than have been arrested in the past 20 years. They should also be looking at the people behind the production of this show, since I believe only the sick-minded would imagine a show like this to be a good idea for anyone to see. Has any state social services agency ever investigated any of these mothers/parents? At the very least, these small children are being exploited while being psychologically damaged beyond repair.

how about stopping and looking around at your kids and hugging them and remembering how smart and beautiful and fun they are (and telling them so) and letting that be your 'mother of the year' award :>L and then turning on the discovery channel or animal planet or heck even AMC to watch something – with or without the kids – that you might learn from, enjoy, or at the least something that won't reduce your i.q. by 10 points every time you view it :-/

NO. It's inappropriate and wrong on so many levels. It's fun when kid's dress up and little girls always want to look pretty. But this is taking both to a level that is simple inappropriate and quite disturbing.

It's really not inappropriate and wrong because she the only thing that was showing was the sides of her belly. The skirt was long enough and the boots came up high. So how could it be wrong. You have to look at it from her side it was not short or reveling any privite parts of the little girls body. Just because the side of her stomach was out. That also whats in now you have stomach shirts and sports bras that ppl run in just because she is three or four dose it make it so wrong

Unfortunately regardless of whether or not the show is on the air these pageants will still exist. At least by being on tv it brings attention to how awful these are and can help to get enough support to shut them down. If it weren't for the show no one would be talking about it, they would still be going on behind closed doors.

The Andy Cohen's of the world have created a gold mine and they are laughing all the way to the bank. Every time a new format for these "reality" shows is discovered, yet another group of America's prospectors (aka gold diggers) jump on board to humiliate themselves at the expense of their families and their dignity. Sure, I think it's disgusting and sad for the children (the whole pageant circuit – not just the TV show). They'll enjoy the limelight and cash prizes today - but their kids (or those around their kids) will be the ones needing therapy tomorrow. But the sad truth is that it is NOT illegal for these people to exploit their children in either these pageants nor the reality show this genre has created.

This is one reality show that I would say "cancel it!" rather than "just don't watch it!". There are those of us that lean on a certain side of the moral and sanity compass that may not watch it and allow it to lose those precious viewership points, but there are those with concerning intentions that watch the show for a more salacious reason. The thought of a television show that offers someone of that nature the ability to watch a toddler in that fashion is disturbing.

Yes, I think the show should be cancelled. It represents a growing problem; our culture increasingly celebrates external beauty, no matter how vapid of devoid of natural charm the person actually is. These girls' self esteem is entirely built on a foundation of smoke and mirrors, versus a genuine love of who they are on the inside. Pageant Moms, if you really want to set your little girls up for success, put your time and effort into instilling a curiosity about life and thirst for learning, and put all of the money you're spending on dresses, spray tans, fake teeth and hairpieces into a college fund.

As a father of a 7 year old girl, I absoloutely think this show and the whole child pageant culture should be abolished! 99% of these mothers are living vicariously through their daughters. The mothers are trying to capture some lost sense of accomplishment in their own lives. In my OPINION these pageants are tatamount to child abuse and exploitation. From what I've seen most of these girls under 5 could care less about pageants and those that are older appear to be brainwashed little zombies created by their ignorant, low brow, under-educated mothers. The OVEWHELMING majority of fathers on this show appear to be henpecked or browbeaten into submission by their wives. This show is an ugly display for the world to see how Americans treat their children. Just like the Polygamy show TLC airs, they try to put a positive spin on an UGLY culture, if we continue to support this kind of show, as time passes, we will begin to forget just how UGLY this all really is!

It's No Different Than Competing in Sports!

      It’s also been said:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an 18 month old baby swing a bat or racquet in a contest of skill against an opponent or a 3 yr old kick a field goal on the gridiron or get a high sticking penalty on the ice. Come to think of it I’ve never seen a toddler penalized points for failing to execute a figure skating jump sequence and when was the last time you saw someone that can’t tie their shoes racing on a luge track?

Now, now. If this mother wants to pimp out her daughter, then the daughter is going to need proper training to be a full time escort. Since she is too young for intimate relations, she can at least learn the proper walk, movements, and looks to be enticing enough to attract Johns.
