While you were working...Today's news you might've missed:
Oh Boy! Weezer's 'Buddy Holly' turns 17On what would have been Buddy Holly's 75th birthday, the rock and roll pioneer (finally!) got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday. The ceremony took place just outside the Capitol Records building on Vine Street in Hollywood. Gary Busey was in attendance (naturally?), as was Holly's widow Maria Elena, Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers, fans and relatives of Holly. (Busey, of course, played Holly in 1978's "The Buddy Holly Story.") A flash mob showed up wearing Buddy Holly glasses - they performed "Not Fade Away" and then shouted in unison: "Happy Birthday, Buddy Holly!" 'Toddlers and Tiaras': Has the show gone too far?People are outraged by 3-year old Paisley, a pageant contestant on TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras.” The tiny contestant appears dressed as Julia Roberts’ hooker character from “Pretty Woman” in a clip from the show. The actual episode hasn’t even aired yet – just a promo. But the Parents Television Council is calling for the series to be canceled! They are urging its members to contact TLC and demand that the network immediately pulls the show off the air. “We have a serious problem when a network formerly known as The Learning Channel features a toddler, who probably hasn't even learned to read, dressed as a prostitute showing off her sexy strut”, says Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the PTC. What do you think? It’s our "Showbiz" Flashpoint: Has “Toddlers and Tiaras” gone too far this time? Are the parents to blame for this? Or is this just a case of a bunch of over-sensitive people getting upset over nothing? Post below and then tune in to our big debate tonight on "Showbiz Tonight," exclusively at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HLN. HBO buys Aaron Sorkin's new showHBO has ordered a new series about cable news from Academy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Aaron Sorkin, the network confirms. (HBO is owned by the same parent company as CNN.) “West Wing” creator Sorkin is listed as executive producer and pilot writer on the show, tentatively titled “More As This Story Develops.” The drama revolves around a cable news anchor (Jeff Daniels!) who strives for ethical journalism despite the state of modern-day media. Marc Anthony launches Kohl's clothing lineIs Marc Anthony taking a page from estranged wife J. Lo's marketing book? The crooner stepped into the world of celebrity fashion lines on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling his new Kohl’s clothing collection, reports Billboard. Marc debuted the Marc Anthony Collection at a Kohl’s store in Jersey City, New Jersey. Judge: Madonna doesn't own 'Material Girl' nameShe may have sung the 1985 song, and she may have launched the Macy’s clothing line, but Madonna does NOT own the trademark to “Material Girl,” according to Billboard. Last year, Madge teamed up with Macy’s to create a teen apparel line (with daughter Lourdes Leon) called Material Girl. But a clothing company who trademarked the name in 1997 had to come along and cramp Madonna’s style – they sued the pop star for infringement. Madonna and her company, Material Girl Brand, have been fighting the lawsuit, claiming the entertainer is the Material Girl. New 'Beetlejuice' movie coming our wayHollywood is reviving “Beetlejuice," reports Deadline, but don’t call it a remake. Producer David Katzenberg and writer Seth Grahame-Smith plan to make a sequel to Tim Burton's 1988 hit through their newly formed KatzSmith Productions. The duo reportedly plans to continue the original “Beetlejuice” storyline as one of their first projects. 'Schweddy balls,' the ice creamCold and creamy - or found in your grocer's freezer - isn't exactly what comes to mind when we think of "SNL" character Pete Schweddy's balls, but Ben & Jerry's may convince us otherwise. The ice cream company - which has previously drawn sweet inspiration from Stephen Colbert, Elton John and Jimmy Fallon - has created a "fair trade vanilla" ice cream filled with fudge covered rum balls that's an ode to the infamous "SNL" skit that featured Alec Baldwin as Schweddy. Rosie O'Donnell: How I became less angryRosie O’Donnell was an angry person, she says, but these days the talk show host isn’t feeling as feisty. O’Donnell shares her mood improvement secret in the October issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, People reports. “The rage has gone away … There’s been a healing," O'Donnell, 49, explained. Lil Wayne nabs 18 BET Hip Hop Awards nodsAfter topping the charts with "Tha Carter IV" - which sold 964,000 units, helping Lil Wayne to secure the biggest sales week for a hip-hop album or record from a male artist since 2008's "Tha Carter III" - Weezy is racking up more accolades. The 28-year-old rapper has scored a record-breaking 18 nominations for 2011's BET Hip Hop Awards, spanning a variety of categories including lyricist of the year; best live performer; best hip hop style (referred to as the "made you look" award); hustler of the year and best club banger (which highlights his track "6 Foot 7 Foot" as well as his collaboration with DJ Khaled, Drake and Rick Ross, "I'm On One"). Trailing behind Lil Wayne are Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa, with nine nominations each, followed by Rick Ross, who snagged 8 nods. The BET Hip Hop Awards, which will be hosted by comedian Mike Epps, will air on October 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. |
