The star-studded cast of “The Great Gatsby” has arrived in Sydney, Australia to start production on Baz Luhrmann’s 3-D vision of the American classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The cast of the anticipated adaptation includes Leonardo DiCaprio (as Jay Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (as Nick Carraway), Carey Mulligan (as Daisy Buchanan), and Isla Fisher (as Myrtle Wilson), among other talent. The movie began production on Monday.
The adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island-set novel has a $126 million dollar budget. Filming will take place over 17 weeks, with over 400 cast and crew working on the movie. Another 30 weeks will be spent on post-production.
Luhrmann will “create his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before," said Warner Bros. Pictures of the big budget film. (Warner Bros. is owned by the same parent company as CNN.) Locations in Sydney are being transformed to replicate the Jazz Age New York and Long Island spots in the book.
One way the director is bringing "Gatsby" to life is by shipping in a fleet of vintage cars from Volo Auto Museum in Illinois. The vehicles reportedly include two 1929 Duesenbergs and a 1929 Packard (to be used by DiCaprio's Jay) – rumored to be worth nearly $3 million each.
“Fitzgerald’s story defies time and geography. The vision and the goal of our remarkable cast and creatives is to do justice to the deftness of Fitzgerald’s telling, and illuminate its big ideas and humanity. This is our challenge and our adventure,” said Luhrmann of shooting in his native Australia.
The film reportedly qualifies for a 40 percent rebate on the production budget from the Australian government, an incentive to produce movies Down Under.
Luhrmann (“Moulin Rouge,” “Romeo + Juliet”) is directing “The Great Gatsby” as well as co-writing, co-producing and co-designing the movie through his company, Bazmark Films.
“The Great Gatsby” is expected to be released November 2012.
