Eddie Murphy Oscars host contender? The hosts of last year's Oscars didn't go over so well, and it seems this time around the Academy's looking towards those with plenty of comedy on their resumes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eddie Murphy is a top candidate to host the 84th Academy Awards. Brett Ratner, who is producing the upcoming awards (along with Don Mischer), told the trade that comedy will be “a big part” of the show this year.
Ratner just directed Eddie Murphy in the upcoming comedy “Tower Heist,” and is said to be pushing for Murphy to host the Oscars. The website Humormillmag.com reported Saturday that Murphy is a sure thing, but the decision hasn't been made quite yet. Ratner and Mischer are reportedly meeting with Academy president Tom Sherak this week regarding this year’s host. Billy Crystal, who has hosted the Oscars eight times between 1990 and 2004, is also being considered, according to THR. “Tower Heist,” also starring Alan Alda and Ben Stiller, hits theaters November 4, and the 84th Academy Awards show airs February 26, 2012. Do you think Eddie Murphy would be a good choice to host? |

Woah this blog is magnificent i love reading your posts. Keep up the great paintings! You realize, many people are searching around for this information, you can aid them greatly.
Yeah, Ed needs to come back and do some stuff. He hasn't been active in quite some time. He needs to get back in the spotlight cuz is and always will be hilarious. "Trading Places" is still one of my many favorite Ed flicks.
Not a fan of his. This will be the firstyear I won't look forward to The Oscars if he is the host. I hope they pick someone else.
I watched Raw this weekend. It reminded me that Eddie used to be pretty funny. Maybe he can get some of that magic back for the Oscars.
I thought James Franco and Anne Hathaway did a good job. There's tremendous pressure being on a live show with a legacy such as the Oscars. Millions are watching...I give them props – in fact anyone hosting, I give credit.
I'd be a nervous wreck!
Billy or Robin would be the bomb! I like Ryan Reynolds too but he may need to pay a few more dues first. He's still sort of a newbie in Hollywood.
"Is there a problem officer?"
I'd like to see Billy Crystal back
Here's a novel idea. How about NO host? Just give out the awards and be done with it. Maybe the show wouldn't go long like it does every year.
actually they've been on time or really close to it for the last few years now.
Great choice. Come on, Eddie!
Eddie would be perfect
Billy Crystal or Whoopi or Steve Martin
Someone who has done it before please save this show! They try to appeal to a young demographic who is going to either watch no matter what or not watch no matter what.
The Oscars involve a lot of Politics. Eddie Murphy was very snooty about his role and the perception he should win. He did several talk shows leading up to the awards and made it known he felt he deserved it. The academy didn't like that behavior leading into the awards and didn't reward him for it. It wasn't his best role (dreamgirls took home zero oscars and lost best song even). Arkin did a good job in Little Miss Sunshine and equally deserved it. Plus he's older and was being "rewarded" for past things too – another part of the politics of the academy.
As long as he can still make people laugh, why not...
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Eddie Murphy publicly behaved like a spoiled child when he was not nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Dream Girls". Why would the Academy even want him to host?
I didn't know he was still alive.
Eddie Murphy don't save that elites atrocity award show, they as much as spat in your face by not even nominating you for Dreamgirls.Let them save that dying beast themselves.
I can't believe people still watch the Oscars. Such a drawn out affair with so little relevance.
I think he would be a great person to host, he's funny and i highly doubt he would make any ignorant comments.
I was really happy to hear about this choice. I remember his old standup in the 80s and 90s. He is a genius. We would like to laugh this year while watching the Oscar's. Anne Hatheway was a bore and I vowed never to watch again, until I heard about Eddie.
He should stay in character as Velvet Jones and refer to all female nominees as hos. Otay!
Eddie Munster!!!...not Eddie Murphy..crawk rawks!
He's be ok, I guess. Anyone would be better than last year's fiasco!
Eddie would be a fantastic host. For those of you whining about him not being funny since the 1980s, I would remind you that eddie's life changed after Raw and Delirious. He had kids! He probably chose to keep it clean with movies they could watch. I commend him for that.
if it aint eddie,it aint glamorous,if it'z gon
b funNY,EDDIE MURPHY aka my PRINCE z d choice.tho he'z been screwd over,he still deserves d shot
No. Dude is past his prime and doesn't he need the time to give drag queens rides home.
Eddie is The Man! I haven't watched the Oscars ever! But if Eddie hosted, I'd DVR it! He is funny as hell and everyone saying he has lost his touch is just lost! Give it to Eddie! He deserves it!
i hv never watch any oscar show, but i think it should be all about who will do it right. no emotion or sentiments should be considered. all the best anyways.
K.am so hapy
I hope not he hasn't been funny since the 80's. The man's movie cancer.
after many years.... i will definitely watch!
Billy
Eddie could be good! Jamie would be a sure thing but I'd like to see if Eddie still has it. I worry thay if things stary going sour he'd walk out, like he did when he didn't win the oscar. Bad sport! But I would love it if he could nail it. Lotta pressure there...
Eddie would be a great host, he's been one of the funniest since 1980, come on people cut him some slack, his movies has grossed over 1 billion in sales, enough said
Here is a very nice co-mmunity

Oh...hey what about the wayans? Id watch it for sure!
Forget murphy....i say bring on the irishmen! Colin, Liam, and (ok scottish) Gerard! Hellyeah!
Just end the discussions now and have robin williams do it. Guaranteed laughter... And doesn't need writing since his superhuman comedic mind will be able to imoprovise everything for 4 hrs. There... I said it... Done deal !
Eddie is a fine comedian and will make a great host!!!
Why not pick Sarah Palin? She doesn't even need writers to be funny. All she has to do is try to say something intelligent, and a joke pops out!
Jamie foxx is ten times funnier than eddie. I mean remember in living colors? Hilarious.!
hey why do you have to utter such a stupid sentence.or is it because eddie is black
Please, I loved In Living Color and there is absolutely no way in heck Jamie in those days was better than Eddie in his prime. However, I will agree that Jamie should have an opportunity to host; he is a great entertainer.
Billy Crystal! Game Over...
I LOVE Billy Crystal and would pick him over Eddie anyday.
I like Eddie but somewhere over the last 15 years the wind has gone out of his comedic sails. He may be an innocent victim of "le bad writing".
If he gets picked, I hope he does a fabulous job. Might even be his chance for a comeback.
How about a female host instead?
why should that be
Eddie may have made a good Oscars host 10 years ago, but there's a reason why he's only had one good role in that time. He's lost a step. Axle Foley he is no longer.
The real entertainer who can host the Oscars is Jamie Foxx. Why is no one mentioning his name?
He should go in character like Gaga did. Dress up as nutty professor for entire 3 hr show.
Yes, that will be a real great idea put a smile on the face of the world.lol
If Mr. Murphy gets the gig, good luck. It would be nice if he could be funny again. It's been a long time.
Eddie was so funny on SNL because of his talent and the great writing staff. The jokes only have to be funny because Eddie can tell a joke.
I think Eddie Murphy will be an excellent host he is one of the funniest comdians of all times.
It would be different to see one of the greatest at his beat. Go ahead ask him!!!! Would he say yes? Mmmm!!!!
Give Murphy a break and an opportunity to bring it. Eddie has always been an entertainer and always will be. Will any of you have a heart attack if Eddie flops? Of course not, you wake up the next day, go to work as usual and probably discuss it amongst your co-workers and you'll even watch the Oscars again next year.
Seonfeld!
It would be nice to see if he still has it. And by "it" I'm talking about his funny bone because the funny Eddie has bee MIA for the last 25 years.
Eddie would be wonderful.he is one of the greatest comedians of all time.its in his blood.he's a natural.
I think the real reason murphy lost the oscar is because he did a mediocre job in a lousy movie. And alan arkin is older, it was a make up oscar. I sincerely doubt valenti had anything to do with it. That's just ignorance of academy voting regulations.
Eddie Murphy hasn't been funny in years & the movies he has been making show it. The best thing he has done (other than Dreamgirls) is voicing Donkey in the Shrek movies. He would be a disaster as host.
Hugh Jackman was a great host & he SHOULD have replaced James Franco about 5 minutes into the Oscar broadcast last year. Jackman & Hathaway have great chemistry & it would have made for a much more entertaining show.
TOTALLY agree...and although he was good in Dreamgirls The guy from Blood Diamond should have won.,and his storming out of the Oscars when he didn't win doesn't say much for his character. I say bring back Billy Crystal.
I agree. I was surprised to look through all these posts and see praise for Murphy. He would be a disaster. He hasn't been funny for years, nor has he had any good movies in years. To pick an Oscar host based on who has a new movie out to promote is a terrible idea. You should pick them because they are relevant, entertaining and view-worthy. The Oscars needs a boost - they should pick someone unexpected and contemporary. Hugh Jackman was FANTASTIC. So was Ellen Degeneres.
Billy Crystal or Steve Martin or Whoopi. Someone who has done it before needs to save them from themselves. Screw trying to appeal to the young demographic who either will or won't watch regardless.
Wow, 20 years ago I would've said great idea, then again James Franco and Anne Hathaway are as contemporary as you can get and they were pretty lame so maybe Eddie, Billy, Robin, and Whoppi could do it together.
Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock or Billy Crystal!
Billy Crystal without a doubt. Done it before several times and was outstanding.
GUMBY DAMNIT!
He may be able to pull it off, it is all in the writing.
Bring him on, should be a great show, funnu and personable!
He's black!
eddie murphey would make a great host, but he should say no after the acadamy screwed him out of an oscar for dream girls
It certainly would be a nice revenge. The real reason Murphy lost that Oscar IMO was Jack Valenti, who was then President of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). As the story goes, he said as long as he was president Murphy would never win an Oscar because Murphy had made a comment about black people not winning Oscars, which at the time was true except for Hattie McDaniel). Mr. Valenti was a very very powerful man, loved by some and hated throughly by others. If true, then Eddie (who was totally ripped off in that Oscar race) must be grinning to even be in contention.
Actually Djimon Honsou (don't know if I spelled that right) deserved that award that year, his performance was extraordinary in Blood Diamond.
I love Eddie – one of my favorite actors ever.
But Paul Newman & Martin Scorsese had to wait many years until they were old & gray to win just one Oscar.
So Eddie will have plenty of chances. Dreamgirls was OK – not an all-time great (especially in terms of song choice).
Contrary to some beliefs, Eddie has a lot more creativity leff in him.
Alan Arkin really was better than Murphy though in LIttle miss sunshine. in my opinion.
Yes!!! Eddie Murphy should host the Oscars.
Eddie would be great but only if he wants to do it....He should have won for dreamgirls....
No, I think Robin Williams would be perfect for the Academy Awards, he is brilliant comedian and we need comedy in this depression. Eddie Murphy will say something off that will offend someone. He is too blunt!
Love Eddie Murphy! Although I hate awards shows I would at least check in just to see him.
