Bethenny Frankel's Skinnygirl line pulled from Whole Foods

Bravo star Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl cocktail line has been pulled from Whole Foods, according to Access Hollywood.

Apparently the ingredients aren't "all natural," like the bottle claims. Jill Zarin must be having a field day with this.

"After discovering that [Skinnygirl Margarita] contains a preservative that does not meet our quality standards, we have had to stop selling it," said the natural and organic grocery chain in a statement.

Frankel’s cocktail line is comprised of low-fat, pre-mixed drinks that the reality star touts as full of “natural flavors.” And the website says "no preservatives," but a rep from Skinnygirl told TMZ, "Skinnygirl Margarita contains very low levels of sodium benzoate (a preservative) so it can stay on the shelves."

"We understand their [Whole Foods] position and we respect that," the Skinnygirl rep told TMZ.

As for Frankel, she tells Access Hollywood, "I'm not making wheatgrass here. If I could put an agave plant and some limes on a shelf I would. [The Skinnygirl Margarita] is as close to nature as possible, while still being a shelf-stable product. ... We were bound to piss someone off and everyone loves to try to tear down a success. This is a non-event. I haven’t lost even a wink of sleep.”

Frankel recently sold her Skinnygirl empire for a reported $120 million.

Also if you want to qualify for CPA certification, you should have an on-job-experience or at least continue on professional education and then obtain experience in related areas like finance. the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). They can provide you with historical information regarding the financial aspects of your business.

One thing I would really like to say is the fact car insurance termination is a hated experience and if you're doing the right things as being a driver you simply won't get one. A number of people do are sent the notice that they have been officially dropped by their insurance company they then have to scramble to get supplemental insurance after the cancellation. Inexpensive auto insurance rates are often hard to get from cancellation. Having the main reasons pertaining to auto insurance termination can help individuals prevent sacrificing one of the most vital privileges accessible. Thanks for the tips shared through your blog.

Whole Foods sells many products that are not "all natural". Many of their products include MSG under hidden names. They deny this, however those of us with allergies know better. If you want "all natural" grow it and make it yourself.

I guess I won't be buying it at Whole Foods anymore, their loss. Thanks for thinking of everything when you made Skinney Girl Margarita's and now I know I don't have to worry about spoilage because you have our backs. These things are always manufactured news events by the company involved. I doubt Whole Foods wanted to create $3-million dollars in free worldwide advertising for the liquor company. Whole Foods probably quietly just stopped putting in orders and closed their account. It was the Anorexic Girl corporation who put out the press release of the product pull in order to get $3-million dollars in front page, web headline coverage. Whole Foods could care less about Anorexic's public image but the liquor maker wanted to milk it with headline photos like those done above on wire services. It worked and once again its how you work the media that matters. The media is a cattle car full of cows and you just need to learn how to milk it to your advantage.

Kudos to Whole Foods for sticking to their standards. While Whole Foods is expensive, I appreciate shopping there because they do all they to truly make sure the products they sell are all natural, haven't been produced at the exploitation of other humans and are conscious of the environment. They of course still sell things that are calorically dense, (read:sugar/fat (but not trans fats!) however, you can rest assured it doesn't contain chemicals that speak to your genes and influence negative gene expression. As for the high cost of Whole Foods, good for them for having such a successful business enterprise! Also, when I was in college, and did a project to help a children's shelter, they were the first to step up to the plate and give a generous donation of food.

So as for Skinny Girl-I have no opinions and won't tear down Bethenny. I also won't be drinking her pre-made margarita mix as I'd rather make the real version at home:).

I am SO tired of people slamming Bethenny and saying she is "no one" and "nothing". Like her or don't like her, that is certainly your prerogative, but you cannot ignore the fact that this woman built an EMPIRE and is fascinating if nothing else.

I did watch the most recent series of her show, and watching her develop her brand from simply an idea to then selling it for $120 million was incredible! She is an amazing example of the American dream, and I say good for her! She has parlayed a small business and a single idea into a lifetime of providing for her daughter and never having to fall asleep at night wondering how the bills will be paid.

I think she is brash, somewhat offensive & insensitive. I also think she is hilarious, brilliant and insanely hard working.

I will continue to follow her and I wish her all the success in the world. Whether you "haters" believe it or not, she has worked her ass off and deserves every bit of it!

To the people knocking "organic", there is a huge difference. Organic means "no turds", as in chemical turds. Do you understand that the dye in foods, label "FD&C #5" and similar labels come from coal tar. That's right folks, coal tar. Your cutesy non-organic fortune cookies and cute looking "bright" foods..that is coal tar you are ingesting while making fun of us organic eaters.

Similarly other chemicals which are found in anti-freeze and chemical degreasers are in your "non-organic" food. I'll have my bread and milk without rocket fuel thank you very much.

There is a reason you get fatter, slower, and dumber. It's from the garbage in the food that is pumped in your system. Your body was not meant to ingest that. Which is why people that eat food untouched from the ground have the least amount of problems.

Bethenny Frankel had a lot going for her, business-wise, pre-reality tv. Did she use her shows as P.R.? Duh. Truly, though, she is more than just Skinny Girl, more than tv. She is a best selling author, an amazing chef, and a smart and successful woman who has built herself up from a crappy childhood. If you don't like he, that is your business. Perhaps there was a business mistake made in regards to listing ingredients, but people, don't rip into someone you don't have any clue about or judge HER based on a single situation. Bethenny Frankel shows herself as having no moral character. She imitates the world of big business, having no concern moral cleanness, but whatever puts money in the bank. Jesus identified the time period we are living in, called his (invisible) "presence" at Matthew 24:27, 37 and 39, saying that "because of the increasing of lawlessness the love of the greater number will cool off."(Matt 24:12)

All of us in the store agree that Skinny girl finishes very poorly, almost a skunky sour finish, Jose Cuervo has the best tasting compared side to side, and it is less calories and cost half as much as Skinny Girl. Oh my god! Sodium Benzoate... what a toxic substance! That's absolutely rediculous. It's a non-toxic preservative that keeps the drink from spoiling and is found in ppm amounts. without it , you wouldn't have the time to drink wine delivered to the store as it would go bad before it hits the shelf. You organic foods people are a little nuts. Just another reason to stay away from Whole Foods and their overpriced groceries.

It's so worth it to spend a little more money to get fruit and vegetables that have not been exposed to tons of chemicals – also antibiotic free chicken, grass fed beef products – the taste of these foods are so much better than the cheap chemical laden processed foods you find in grocery stores. And as far as prices a lot of foods are cheeper at Whole Foods especially when it comes to all natural and organic food comparison to the supermarket.

Somehow I find Bethenny Frankel's snooty remarks, ""I'm not making wheatgrass here. If I could put an agave plant and some limes on a shelf I would..." more offensive and showing a lack of remorse than the actual lousy product she is marketing. In fact, I would hope that public regulators would come down hard on the deceptive advertising claiming no preservatives when this is an outright fabrication. I think Frankel would see a new light if she were to spend some time incarcerated and forced to do community service for about 1000 hours or so. It's time we hold these celebrities to the same standards for the rest of our citizenry. I'm sick and tired of the plutocratic favoritism shown to these overpaid numbskulls.

No rocket science or policing needed here – Whole Foods just did not do their homework. Uses

Sodium benzoate is a preservative. It is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions. It is most widely used in acidic foods such as salad dressings (vinegar), carbonated drinks (carbonic acid), jams and fruit juices (citric acid), pickles (vinegar), and condiments. It is also used as a preservative in medicines and cosmetics.[1] [2] As a food additive, sodium benzoate has the E number E211.

It is also used in fireworks as a fuel in whistle mix, a powder that emits a whistling noise when compressed into a tube and ignited. The fuel is also one of the fastest burning rocket fuels and provides a lot of thrust and smoke. It does have its downsides: there is a high danger of explosion when the fuel is sharply compressed because of the fuel's sensitivity to impact.

Sodium benzoate is produced by the neutralization of benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide.[3] Benzoic acid is detectable at low levels in cranberries, prunes, greengage plums, cinnamon, ripe cloves, and apples. Though benzoic acid is a more effective preservative, sodium benzoate is more commonly used as a food additive because benzoic acid does not dissolve well in water.[3] Concentration as a preservative is limited by the FDA in the U.S. to 0.1% by weight. The International Programme on Chemical Safety found no adverse effects in humans at doses of 647–825 mg/kg of body weight per day.[4][5]

Cats have a significantly lower tolerance against benzoic acid and its salts than rats and mice.[6] Sodium benzoate is, however, allowed as an animal food additive at up to 0.1%, according to AFCO's official publication.[

      Safety and health

Main article: Benzene in soft drinks

In combination with ascorbic acid (vitamin C, E300), sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate form benzene, a known carcinogen. However, in most beverages that contain both, the benzene levels are below those considered dangerous for consumption. Heat, light and shelf life can affect the rate at which benzene is formed.

Professor Peter W. Piper of the University of Sheffield claims that sodium benzoate by itself can damage and inactivate vital parts of DNA in a cell's mitochondria. Mitochondria consume oxygen to generate ATP, the body's energy currency. If they are damaged due to disease, the cell malfunctions and may enter apoptosis. There are many illnesses now tied to DNA damage, including Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases, but above all, the aging process in general.

      Hyperactivity

Research published in 2007 for the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) suggests that certain artificial colours, when paired with sodium benzoate (E211) may be linked to hyperactive behaviour. The results were inconsistent regarding sodium benzoate, so the FSA recommended further study.

Professor Jim Stevenson from Southampton University, and author of the report, said: "This has been a major study investigating an important area of research. The results suggest that consumption of certain mixtures of artificial food colours and sodium benzoate preservative are associated with increases in hyperactive behaviour in children. However, parents should not think that simply taking these additives out of food will prevent hyperactive disorders. We know that many other influences are at work but this at least is one a child can avoid."

In addition to what you have posted is that the combination of sodium benzoate and Vitamin C (limes!) or citric acid forms benzene, a known carcinogen, in the body. There's a significant history (going back about 20 years) of this discovery and of European and American soft drink companies being told to reformulate their products to remove the sodium benzoate since many also contain citric acid or Vitamin C. Most did so voluntarily to avoid getting called out and the resulting media attention.

BF totally sold out on her natural schtick and it was a stupid move. She should've put her Louboutin heel down on that one.

the website says "no preservatives," but a rep from Skinnygirl told TMZ, "Skinnygirl Margarita contains very low levels of sodium benzoate (a preservative) so it can stay on the shelves."

Well that's nice. So would that be considered false advertising, or do they have a tiny disclaimer somewhere that allows them to lie? Pretty sure you can't say "this product contains no preservatives" when it does. In fact, as others have mentioned as I thought when reading this, if the buyer wasn't made fully aware of this including their misleading ads they could sue or seek a reversal of the purchase.

Any company that would purchase another solely on what a website hype says deserves what they get.....

Shame on Skinnygirl (I shuddered a little writing something so ridiculous) for misrepresenting whether or not their product is "all natural."

Shame on Whole Foods for, once again, proving they are the undisputed world leader in pretentiousness. Why not stock the product (correctly labeled, of course) and let the consumer decide?

Preservatives in food are one of the possible (not proven, but not disproven either) causes for the ever-younger onset of puberty in children. While I understand that preservatives are necessary to make the global food business work and feed billions and billions of people. I worked hard at school and earned a good job and make enough money that I can afford some parts of my life to be better than that of the masses of low-wage high-school graduates. One of those ways is that I choose not to pollute my body and those of my family with preservatives that we don't really understand.

Whole Foods, among other companies, gives me that choice. Feel free to spend your disposable income in other ways, if you have any.

The single fascinating thing about this woman, beyond her anorexia, is that she is defending a product that she no longer owns and has already sold for $120 million. What a loser? And to those who would defend her, it is a federal and state crime to claim something is free of preservatives when it is not. Instead of defending her, we should be watching her go off to jail for her crime and the company should be fined megabucks for false advertising. Sodium benzoate is a nasty preservative. Although widely used, it is by no means "safe" or organic..

@"Truth": I have never heard anyone, Whole Foods included, refer to them as a "health food store". What they do say is that they sell only foods free of preservatives, etc. You apparently inferred "health food" statement for yourself. They never claim that. It's still up to you, the consumer, to do your homework and buy the foods you want to eat. If you do wish to eat junk food, then at least theirs is made of wholesome foods that are bad for you but at least unadulterated (like butter), as opposed to hydrogenated oils, for example.

They don't claim to be a health store but it's one of a few places you can buy humanely obtained meat products if you have a meat eater in the family-I do. :( Don't care much about the alcohol aspects of the store. People who develop food items or alcohol items and label them a certain way better be truthful-we will find out! :)

Pam, why does having a meat eater (as you call him/her) in your family upset you?

Bethennys statement was in true Bethenny form and right on the money. Good for her, I love Whole Foods but not everything in their store contains 100% ingredients that are all natural. The best part of the news article is how much Bethenny sold the Skinny Girl empire for. What a great story of success; a women who was not too long ago broke, created and built something that was in all "good" or health concious for people and is now financially stable as a result. Way to go Bethenny I'm proud of you!

AMEN!! I totally agree with you 100%.
I purchased a bottle of Skinny Girl Margarita two months ago... for the first time (out of curiosity) and I was not impressed. It has this weird chemical aftertaste (the preservatives) and I finished the bottle in 3 days never getting a slight buzz! Needless to say, I will never purchase that brand again. Waste of money in my honest opinion.
