The most memorable moment of Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards had nothing to do with music, fashion or a cross-dressing Lady Gaga. Instead, it was some big news from a not-so-single lady.
In case you haven’t already heard, superstar singer Beyonce and rapper husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child.
Way to steal the show, mama!
The buzz was deafening even before the start of the VMAs when Beyonce showed off her belly bump on the award show’s black carpet. Dressed in a flowy, off the shoulder orange gown, the singer cradled her baby in a picture that MTV tweeted with the message "OMG Beyonce just made a huge announcement on the #vma carpet! #baby!!!!!"
Within moments “BEYONCE IS PREGNANT” was trending on Twitter.
It seemed like rumors of a baby-on-board popped up every few months following the couple's top-secret wedding in 2008. The singer told CNN Piers Morgan that she “always said I'd have a baby at 30” and it looks like she has made her deadline as her birthday is next week.
At the VMAs the bump distracted from Lady Gaga in character as her male alter-ego, Joe Calderone (what was that all about anyway?) and even Britney Spears – who received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award – seemed to be rushing through her acceptance speech to introduce Beyonce’s performance.
“I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me,” Beyonce told the audience before launching into her single “Love on Top” which includes the lyric “Everybody asks me why I’m smiling out from ear to ear.”
Well now we know. Beyonce made it official when she ended her rousing performance by dropping the microphone, unbuttoning her sequined jacket and rubbing the baby bump.
Cue husband Jay-Z in the audience smiling and clapping wildly while friend and musical collaborator Kanye West patted him on the back.
Let the speculation over baby names, boy or girl and due dates commence!
