Celebs make up for Gaga's tame VMA look with eccentric outfits

From her red lace mask and hat in 2009, to her meat dress in 2010 – it’s no wonder #Whatwillgagawear was trending on Twitter before the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards kicked-off on Sunday night.

This time around, Lady Gaga didn’t shock viewers with blood-spattered lingerie, or a hat that wouldn’t make it past airport security. Instead, Gaga donned a pair of black slacks and a white T-Shirt as her musical alter ego, Joe Calderone.

Ironically, it was the most street-friendly outfit we’ve seen her sport. But, not to worry, these celebs dressed crazy enough to make up for Gaga’s tamer look:

Katy Perry’s many costume changes – some more eccentric than others – filled the void left by Gaga’s more typical look. Perry arrived on the black carpet wearing a kimono-like dress and toting an umbrella to match her new pink ‘do.

Later on in the evening, Perry changed into a geometric skirt and stop, complete with a yellow cube on her head. Perry would have fit in better at a Green Bay Packers’ game with that cheesehead-like hat. She also donned a sparkly black number with broken records making up the neckline. Her royal wedding-worthy record fascinator completed the look.

LMFAO “Party Rockers,” Redfoo and SkyBlu, sparkled at the VMAs. Redfoo (right) donned a two-piece silver getup, complete with wings and a handprint over the crotch. SkyBlue (left) wore tight red pants, a velvet blazer and personalized bling around his neck.

The most eccentric look of the evening belonged to Nicki Minaj, who dressed like a toddler playing dress up. A printed mask covered her mouth. She wore socks, stuffed animals and bows in place of shoes. And she toted what could be a chew toy for a really large animal. Not to mention the ice cream cone necklace hanging around her neck.

Lil Wayne modeled a pair of blue, Ralph Lauren boxer briefs during his VMA performance. The rapper also wore a pair of tight, animal-printed pants and shoes with different colored laces.

Justin Bieber channeled Britney Spears, who donned a snake during her 2001 VMA performance. Biebs had a smaller version of Spears’ slithery friend wrapped around his hand as he walked the black carpet.

UK performer Jessie J, who broke her ankle during a recent performance, wore a bedazzled leotard and tights to match her Swarovski crystal-encrusted boot and crutches.

I am posting to raise awareness to a comment that was made by the rapper Soulja Boy in a recent song that is starting to cause a major uproar in the military community and needs to be addressed through the public news. Soulja Boy stated in his song Let's Be Real: "F***k the FBI and F***k the Army Troops" As an army wife myself I am very offended and this shouldn't be tolerated. My husband, who is an active duty member of the army, also makes music and has made his own response to the so called artist. You can listen to it and please share it because we need to take a stand and show that this type of behavior is not tolorated. Our troops, who are husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters deserve more respect and credit for all that they do! here is the link to his page: http://youtu.be/oyZ_Iug6tUg

to see these kids worship these people like gods. its rediculous to see these kids and young adults sitting on the edge of their seat for someone who can barely speak english (lil wayne) to "sing." or to see thier favorite celeb in a halloween costume.

First off kudos to Adele, her performance was the best of the nite followed by Beyonce's belly rub. While I didnt really mind Gaga's alter ego 'Joe Calderone' I have to say Katy Perry who at a quick glance looked like a giant colorful mouse trap w.that cheese on her head still managed to look ehh, quite eccentric but not totally ridiculous. On the other hand Nicki Minaj was just a complete f***ing mess. She looked like a little girl who was playing dress up in a halloween/costume store w.out parental supervision.

Artist in the past have been wacky or did or wore weird things because that's who they were or they didn't care what people thought, or maybe that just wanted to be different. Perry, Gaga, and Manaj try to hard at trying to be wacky and its annoying. It's not edgy or different when they just try to top each other in ridiculousness.

you are so right-on. Even the red carpet styles are pretty bad. Thankfully a few people that are really beautiful, Angelina, Haille B, don't need to be whacked out in the ridiculous costumes.

Perry's "kimono-like dress" isn't anything close to a kimono–if anything it's Chinese. But most Americans are too ignorant to tell the difference.

I thought it was nice for a change that Gaga was more toned down and showcased her talent by staying in character as her male alter ego. Frankly, I liked her as her male alter ego more than her gaga image. Sure, she still went a little bit over the top at times as usual, but at least she was having more fun with it instead of being pretentious as usual (the only thing i didn't like is the cheesy dance number and her pandering to the audience, it's just becoming too obnoxious and typical).

I guess music stopped being about the songs, music and lyrics and became all about who could upstage whom with outrageous clothes right about the same time MTV stopped being about music videos and became focused on people behaving badly via a reality TV audience that spurned them on to do so.

It's pretty sad and pathetic that the only female artist that can stand out solely on her voice and talent is Adele. You don't see her wearing whacky outfits and antics because she doesn't need to. The wacky outfits and stunts that the majority if not all popular female artists do these days not only overcompensates for their lack of personality but also for their lack of talent. The only credit I give to Gaga that at least she has more talent and personality in her middle finger than Niki Manaj and Katy Perry combined, except that just like them, she has to rely on a gimmick and the theatrics for attention, which is sad, because she doesn't need to.

That idiotic brat was there ? Shows how stupid people are for buying into that stupid kind of music and the level of braindeads on MTV to even invite her. So, if you are a teenager, got a 10 word lyric song, and want to be famous, just do a stupid video with your underage no good to drive friends, repeat the lyrics over and over again until everybody knows what an idiot you are, invite a black dude to do a little rap in the middle to copy another idiotic teenager (Bieber), and you'll be famous as hell!

Why is it that these days popular female artists have to compete with each other at who can wear the wackiest outfit? Or do the weirdest PR stunt? This is just getting old; that was especially apparent at the VMAs lastnight, seeing one artist do it is cool and refreshing but when you see that every popular female artist (other than Adele) is doing the same wacky costume change routine it gets really annoying and dumb, like watching a child demanding for attention. Katy Perry was trying way way too hard at being "kooky" and "weird" with the stupid childish clothing and the stupid block on her head, and Nicki Manaj's outfit was no different, very pedestrian, very desperate for attention. It's all the more annoying because bottom line, these ladies rest so much on being whacky and weird looking that they show little to no personality. Gaga has some, but she lets her ego and her pandering get in the way. After awhile, it's all too much and too tiring to witness over and over again.

How ridiculous is it for a non music channel to award something they don't have a clue about anymore ? Their programming is garbage, so I guess the so called celebs decided to look like garbage too. I think Stype (from REM) regrets that day when he asked Steven Tyler to put the shutgun he brought away, he would probably use it nowdays to shoot all this garbage to hell !

I really liked Lady Gaga's choice of attire. I think it's great that you really NEVER know what to expect from her. I was saying all day before the VMA's that it would be so great if she showed up in jeans and a tshirt just to shock everyone...what she did was WAAAAAAAAY better. Katty Perry and Nicki Minaj, you both look fantastic when you dress right... you don't have the WOW factor by wearing those clothes, you honestly look like you are trying to leech off of someone else's style. I like how Nicki always has crazy wigs but that outfit??? for real????

What do you mean by we don't know what to expect from her? By now, we all know that she will wear some wacky outfit or do some kind of self-serving, pandering antic. Even though we might not know exactly what she will wear, say, or do, we always expect that it will be something over the top. When one does that all the time, it starts to become expected, never a surprise or a shocker, that is, unless she for once actually dressed classy and normal for a change.

These celeb outfits are getting too extreme. Back in the day you had a couple of people show up at these things looking crazy. This year it was every other person. Nicki Minaj looked like she needed to be committed. Katy Perry looked like she was trying too hard. I find it so funny I must say I'm sick and tired of seeing underwear and sagging pants. I thought the viral song, "Pants on the ground," would have put a stop to it. Guess not. I blame the stupid women who worship these men who can't even pull their pants around their wastes like adults.
