As we know full well by now, Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman worked their tails off to get into ballerina shape for last year's "Black Swan."
And after pushing herself to drop 20 pounds for the role, Kunis tells Glamour U.K. that it's changed her outlook on the battle of the bulge - if you're not slimming down, you're not trying hard enough, she says.
"I don’t think I ever fully realized what a human body is capable of doing,” she says. “But I think I was also, in a beautiful way, incredibly naïve. I believed I could do anything. I never for one moment thought I couldn't do it. I believe in hard work. In self-drive and self-worth."
Don't get her wrong - she's a "huge foodie," she says, adding that she "loves food."
"But when people say 'I can't lose weight,' no, no, no, you can," Kunis emphasizes. "Your body can do everything and anything, you just have to want to do it."
But regardless of where you are with your fitness aspirations, it's essential to maintain a clear-headed outlook, Kunis says, which is one thing she's learned to cultivate after working in Hollywood for so long.
“I’m in an industry based on rejection. On negativity and let-downs," says Kunis, who turns 28 on August 14. "People are rejected every single day purely based on opinion, about who’s a good actress, who’s a bad actress, who’s pretty, who’s ugly, who’s fat, who’s skinny. So why go there? You have to have a positive outlook. Otherwise you’re in a very dark place.”

Mila is 100% right and I get it. I am 47 years and finally, after years of being overweight, dropped 40 lbs. last year and will keep it off forever. Due to alarming health issues probably caused by weight gain and stressful lifestyle, soimething inside of me finally clicked and I began a journey into a healthy, fit, body.
I read some of these comments and laugh. All excuses. Time? Money? Hormones? BS! Eat fresh fruit, vegetables and a little low fat protein. Drink water, green tea and invest in a good juicer. Move, vigorously, for 20 minutes every other day and spend $12 on a yoga, Pilates or Qinong video. Practice meditation, You WILL lose weight. Your body IS capable of responding. You just have to have the right mindset to get there.

There are many reasons for being overweight and it doesn't mean you aren't trying. After gaining the freshman 15 I went crazy at the gym. Working out 2 hours 7 days a week but the pounds kept piling on. So I cut my calories to 700 per day. Still I gained 80 pounds over the period of a year.
After landing in the hospital I was diagnosed as being severly malnourished with a thyroid condition and eating disorder. It took 3 years of medication, LESS exercise and eating more under the guidance of a nutritionist and therapist to take the weight off. So stop assuming everyone is a gutton and can do it on their own.
First off, I have hypothyroidism and I have a full time office job so I am on my butt 8 hours a day. I did gain about 15 lbs in the last 5 years but that's it. In the past year I have stayed at relatively the same weight. I walk pretty much everywhere and bike to work and back (walk in the winter). I eat fairly healthy, although I do like me some ice cream! But I also try to go the gym at least twice a week, more if I have time. Although I think she needs to be realistic by realizing that she can afford a trainer, the time to go the gym and the motivation of money, she does have a point. You can do it if you really want to and everything else is just an excuse.

If I had to guess from reading your post, I would guess that you weigh more than you claim you would like to. But just like Mila said, you are lacking the commitment to take the necessary steps to do something about it.

Tough words from a skinny rich girl are never fun, but she's right. Medical conditions are one thing, but Americans eat so much garbage compared to other countries that we're so sensitive about the pounds issue. Maybe if having a liter of coke in the fridge wasn't as everyday as keeping hand soap in the bathroom, people would would actually lose weight. I think 180 looks fine on a girl, 300 often does not.

Every night in college, I sat in an area that could see the ice cream machine. Only 3 times in for years did I ever see a skinny gurl in line to get ice cream. The thin girls did not eat it, or dessert.
i somewhat agree and somewhat disagree....i was always normal weight. never really dieted, just ate right and exercised. UNTIL...i gave birth. now I do the EXACT same as i did before having my son (Eat the exact same and actually exercise more) and i am 40lbs heavier than i was when i got pregnant. i can't figure it out. I got tested for hypothyriodism which ive learned is actually pretty common for a period of time after giving birth and yes my thyroid was low. they told me they want to retest in a couple months so for these months i am sitting her frustrated wondering how i am gaining weight when i am doing the same as i was doing and more before. so for most people, yes i agree its lifestyle and nothing more, but for others, i think its not so easy.
Several people have said that Hypothyroidism makes you fat, as someone who had hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's and Cushings disease for most of my life and now has NO thyroid, I can say that is a BS excuse. Yes, having an underactive thyroid (or none at all) makes your body prone to gain weight but it doesn't "make you fat" even with this condition you can be a healthy if you choose to eat right and exercise regularly. It means that you do have to work harder than someone how doesn't have these issues but it is a choice. Before I was diagnosed I gained weight, a lot of weight, but once I understood what was wrong and how these disorders impacted my body I chose to make the necesary changes in my diet and activity habits to counteract them and have lived for many years at my target weight of 150lbs which is a healthy weight for a 5'10" woman. I eat what my kids eat (I just eat less than I used to) and I am not spending hours in the gym (what full time working mother can?). It's not about depravation, it is about making conscious, healthy choices to live your life better.
As someone who has tried – tried HARD – eaten a 1600 calorie/day diet while working out 30 mins/day AND getting my thyroid problem treated – and not lost a single pound after weeks of it, I can tell you that Mila Kunis is, for some set of the population, full of crap.
Sure, I could try even harder – literally starve myself on one of those crazy 500 calorie/day diets, give up other things that make my life worth living in order to work out more, focus all my time and energy and money on losing weight – but why? So I can weigh 30 pounds less and be so focused on my weight that I never think about anything else?
I'd rather just live. Exercise because it's fun and it makes me feel good. Eat nutritious food that makes me feel good. Sometimes (not often, but once in awhile) eat non-nutritious food because I'm a g-d adult and I'm allowed. Have healthy test results despite the apparent crime of carrying 30 extra pounds. (And yes: I do.)
Sure, it's a choice. But is the other option really a valid choice? What kind of life is that? That kind of eating is as disordered as someone with anorexia. (Which my sister has, so I know from eating disorders.)
Chill out, people. Fat people aren't required to lose weight simply to dampen the moral panic du jour. I don't exist to cater to your comfort. It's a LOT more complicated, for many people, than "3500 calories=1 pound, exercise more/eat less and you will lose weight."

I used to think this way too, until suddenly without me changing my diet or exercise I went from 100lbs to 200lbs in about 6 months. After years of starving myself and working out and feeling like total crap all the time I found out I had a pituitary brain tumor. I could of literally starved myself to death and I wouldn't of lost a single pound. I continued to gain until I surgery to have it removed. Hormones completely control your body, and if they get out of wack for any reason be prepared to suffer.
It's a lot easier to lose weight when it is part of your job- you get paid to prepare for the role, including the workout and the food and the trainer. She needs to live in the real world, not lala land.

When I first read the headline for this article, I was annoyed thinking, "Ugh another skinny, young girl talking about how easy it is to be skinny." Then I read the article and saw she lost 20 pounds for a role. As a relatively thin woman I will say shedding weight off an already healthy or slim figure is extremely difficult. If she could lose 20 pounds off that tiny frame, she's earned the right to make a comment about weight loss.

End of discussion? No way. You may know about nutrition but you don't know about disease. Look up Cushing's Disease. Better yet look up Mystery Diagnosis about Cushing's on Youtube and education yourself. Yes, you can stave yourself and work out and continue to gain weight. I know because I starved myself for years before I found out I had Cushing's Disease. After brain surgery I continued to eat next to nothing and work out every day and I finally lost weight. Being an adult who was about 100lbs and I was on a masters swim team working out about 4 hours a day and very conscience about my body, i freaked out when I gained 100lbs in about 6 months while still working out that intense and eating less then 1000 calories a day.
Actually, as much as some people don't want to hear this, she's right. Granted, medical problems that make it impossible to lose weight make up an VERY small percentage of people who can't lose weight. I've had all kinds of addictions, food being one of them. And when I pushed myself, and wanted to change bad enough, guess what, i did it. It was extemely hard, but I did it. If you want it bad enough, and you push yourself hard enough, a lot of times you'll suprise yourself with what you can do. You don't need a personal trainer to lose weight. It helps, but it's not necessary. Even people who can't walk cam swim with a float in a pool.
She is right. All the fat a$$ed Americans overeat and don't exercise. I know of people who went to Overeaters Anonymous meeting and then celebrated by going to a Dunkin Donuts after the meeting. Retarded.
Speaking as someone whom has battled with weight my whole life, I have to say that Mila is absolutely right...Anyone can lose weight, yes some people have thyroid issues, but even they can lose weight once they're diagnosed and put on proper medication. Most if not all overweight people carry excess fat because their bodies can't metabolize the food they consume, or they have food allergies such as Gluten/lactose or even sugar intolerance. Problem is most people don't realize this, took me 35 yrs to figure it out, and ever since then I've made a complete lifestyle change, only fresh fruits and vegetables, no fried foods the absolute worse, my carbohydrate intake has been reduced immensely, and most important I gave up my car and now walk and ride my bike everywhere...It's nonsense to make excuses as to why you can't lose weight, change your eating habits and get some exercise daily, you will lose weight!!!

I agree with her intent on the issue and have no problems with her statements. I think most people could loose weight if they really wanted to such as myself but some have many obstacles to overcome or deal with that make it quite difficult. You also have people that have medical conditions and other issues that make it nearly impossible, I do not fall into that category like most people..
However for the masses and majority of people they could do it if they choose to. Some don't, some don't know how, and some don't care and are happy with who they are.

This is great, I totally agree with you, and this girl came to this country at 7 years old and had a teacher who became her agent and paid for her head shots, school and everything because her parents were crying "we dont have any money for this and that". How many lucky little girls do you know that were literally taken up the road to success on a high horse like that. Now, its sickening how she can make such statements, she doesnt have nor ever had the financial pressures, emotional issues, failures that affect peoples emotions then weight.

I'm not overweight at all but I also don't exercise....I don't have the time. I wake up at 5 a.m. to get ready and to get to work. After work at 8 p.m. I have an hour drive home which gives me time to get my stuff ready for the next day and then sleep. With that kind of schedule, if I had any kind of metabolism like I know people have I could definately see people could be over weight. All in all, what I'm trying to say is eating right isn't always the only thing and not everyone has the time to workout. So Mila Kunis, congrats that your job allows you all sorts of free time, hats off to you. If everyone in the world had your employment, money, and time then yes it would be their decision to be overweight
I am on the ledge with this one. The majority of overweight people are overweight because they do not make an adequate effort to be healthy. I agree as well, however, that there are others whose medical conditions make such things difficult no matter how hard they worked. For most of my life I watched my mother exercise constantly, eat extremely healthy, and do anything she possibly could to lose weight. Granted she wasn't fat (just wanted those extra 10 lbs off). After years and years of being stuck in the same spot, no matter how much she tortured her body, she went to the doctor and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Once she started taking the medicine, the transformation was incredible. The simple act of taking a medicine that allowed her thyroid to function properly, finally made her the weight someone who diets and exercises as much as her should be.
So, unless you do have a medical condition that's proven to make weight a difficult thing to get off, you have no excuse to be 70 + lbs overweight. I am not putting down people who only have that extra 10-20 lbs. That is a personal issue and if you are happy with yourslef, then so be it, dont complain. I can see how Mila's statements could be offensive to people with PCOS or in my mother's position. However, I dont think she meant it in an offensive way, and only meant it towards those people who eat at McDonald's constantly, dont work out, and claim that they cant lose weight. I empathize with you who struggle with medical conditions that make it difficult to lose weight and I hope that I dont get stuck in your position someday. Good luck in your efforts!
I used to make excuses, then I tried to lose weight, then was diagnosed with PCOS. I started seeing a naturopathic doctor, taking some vitamins, and changed the way I eat. I do yoga 5 mornings a week before work (only 20-30 minutes, at home) and walk my dog most evenings. I've worked really, really hard and have lost 62 pounds. This has greatly helped my PCOS symptoms. Sometimes the underlying issues have to be addressed before you can successfully lose weight.
Food will never taste as good as thin feels.
i agree with this article and i have hypothyroidism. exercise and good food. eat low fat lean sources of protien, lots of fruits and veggies. lay off the fattening junk food. you will lose wieght.
... I think a lot of you are missing part of her point: she was ALREADY at a good weight, then had to lose 20 pounds. Say what you want, peeling off twenty pounds when you're at a healthy weight is HARD! Try losing even 5 pounds when you're already at your goal weight and see how fun that is. Losing 20 is easier than losing 5 sometimes. For something like that, you probably would need a trainer and a dietician, and I commend her for doing it (she certainly was well compensated for it though!). Realistically, if you're overweight, and not at a healthy weight, weight loss is much easier. And a few of the "medical conditions" preventing exercise were caused by becoming overweight in the first place... my sister binge-ate for years. She sure didn't start out with pre-diabetes. She didn't start out with shin splints. She didn't start out with a lot of the things that she has now that she's 250 pounds on a 5'6" frame. Years of putting it on does make taking it off kinda hard. You do have to want it, since it's hard work. Nothing good comes easy.
When you've lost a bunch of weight, it's easy to fall into a semi-proselytizing, "Yes, it can be done, and by everyone!" kind of mnindset. It happened to me. You over-generalize from your own experience and don't consider that other people face different challenges from yours. I think she's trying to be supportive and encouraging, and I give her the benefit of the doubt.
i agree with her. i have a bad back and can't always workout because of that. One day, while sitting at 245lbs, I literally said to myself that I didn't want to be this fat anymore. At 5'10', 245 is pretty overweight so just like that, i made myself focus on not eating the best foods, but just less of it. What happened? Still not as small as I want to be, but sitting at 200lbs now is far better and my back is thanking me. I'm not gonna lie, i still eat pizza and burgers and have the occasional soda, but I just made myself not eat as much and slowly but surely, the weight came off with minimal working out. My next goal is 175 and I am well on my way. I can see why people would think she was naive, but she is also kind of right. Will power can trump most other issues. It's just a matter of how much you want it. I wanted it and I got it. I was 245 for almost 7 years and in 6 months, the extra 45 melted off. Time to get crackin' on the next 25 so I can be as light as I was when I was 19.
B.S. I appreciate her positive outlook. I'm sure she was trying to be encouraging. But she is talking from a lack of experience. And those of you who are berating people with some weight on them, or espousing how great you are because you can keep weight off by getting on the stairmaster for half an hour each week, are living in a similar fantasyland.
Do your research. Food that is good for you costs a lot more. Time away from work to exercise is increasingly difficult to get for more and more of us. Economists, medical professionals, and news organizations are just starting to get hip to what too many of us have known for years: the less money you make and the lower you are on the totem-pole, the more fat-gaining stress you will experience, the worse your health will be, and the lower the quality of food you can afford will be. Watch PBS, for cripes' sake. It is a completely valid point to make that weight loss is fantastically harder for some of us than it is for others. Those of you who find it so easy and are acting so glib about it ought to first thank your lucky stars, and then take a good long look at how you or your rich husbands can make changes to not put the brunt of all your stress on the people who work for you, and maybe put off buying that second or thirs yacht, so your slaves can afford some better food and maybe get an extra hour away from the sixteen hour days you force on them to get to the gym.
I haven't even started on the subject of genetics or metabolism yet. But the fact of the matter is, it is scientifically, medically proven that our society is set up to force obesity on particular segments of people through myriad ways. And those of you who are ignorant of this and mean about it have some soul searching to do. Yes, I used to be able to lose weight quickly. I can't anymore, and there doesn't seem to be any help for it on the near horizon. That's because I do the work of three people trying to support my family while my bosses sit around raking in cash and doing nothing to help me or my coworkers. That's the American Way.

Mila is generally right! I'm on my way to what will eventually be a 70-pound weight loss. I'm 30 pounds into it as I type this. The most important thing I've learned about weight loss is that while it is truly a "want to" situation, let's not forget that there are many factors that could potentially decrease one's desire to take care of themselves, i.e. depression, low self-worth, etc. I was never successful in my numerous past attempts at losing weight/getting healthy, simply because I did not love myself enough to feel like I deserved to be happy and healthy (This took MUCH self-exploration to figure out.). Mila herself said that she, "never for one moment thought I couldn't do it. I believe in hard work. In self-drive and self-worth." Lucky her, eh? ;)
I'm a firm believer that people get fat (or stay fat, in my case, as I've always been overweight) for one of two reasons, most of the time. 1.) They just don't care! They're perfectly happy getting/being fat and don't value their health much. They have a "I enjoy myself, and we're all gonna die someday, who let's have fun." kind of mentality. (I'm sure we all know other addicts like this...smokers, drinkers..) Or, 2.) They are struggling with depression, low self-esteem, extreme life challenges, A BABY, etc.
I personally feel that most overweight people fit into the latter category, although I do know some folks who are just fine they way they are, realizing it's unhealthy to be fat but really not caring enough to do anything. But like I said...I think most people are fat because they're sad. Sadness/depression can easily lead to "laziness". There are tons of people out there who work extremely hard at their jobs, their households, families, etc. but who just can't seem to gather up the self-love and belief in themselves to change their lives, concentrate on themselves, and lose the weight.
I agree with other posters that unless you've had a weight problem yourself, or a depression problem, I'll go ahead and add, you should try and be more sensitive to people who struggle with their weight. You may be quick to assume that the fat person you see on the street is simply lazy, but inside they may truly want to lose the weight but unfortunately suffer from depression and low self-esteem.
All in all, though, I do agree with Mila, and I have a feeling she meant nothing more than to encourage people who don't believe in themselves.
For otherwise healthy people, the ability to lose weight is based on what they eat and how hard they exercise. However, there are some of us (like me), who have illnesses that make maintaining a healthy weight very difficult. Thyroid and estrogen issues can cause people to gain or lose weight no matter what they eat or how much (or how little) they work out. Keeping those hormones in check is a difficult process, but it must be done in order for one to be healthy. It adds another level of resistance when it comes to losing weight, but if one works hard to maintain proper hormone levels ( getting them checked often, taking the pills every day), a healthy weight is possible. Therefore, it really IS based on how hard you are willing to work (within reason, of course). Those of us with illnesses that cause us to gain weight have more work ahead of them.

I don't agree with her completely. Yes everyone can lose weight. But how easy and fast is different for everyone. I am 10lbs overweight and I have hard time losing weight. I tried NS. Lost 4lbs the 1st week. Then I started kickboxing 2hrs a week and walking 2 miles 3 days a week. I gained all the weight back. Didn't lose anything for a month. I tried increasing my calorie intake from 1200 to 1500 thinking my body was in starvation mode. Didn't work. Then I tried WW. I ate my 29 points and used my 49 bonus points and lost about 8 lbs in 2 months. ( 1lb a week) and this was with a 3-5 day a week workout. Then I stopped losing weight again and got discourage. I worked out and ate right for 4 months just to lose to total of 8lbs.
So it isn't a simple cut 3500 calories by diet or exercise and lose weight. I used a heart rate monitor to calc the fat I burned. I burned about 200 calories a day walking. That's 600 a week. I burned 600 calories with 1 hr of kickboxing. That's another 1200 calories a week. Plus eating at a 1500 cal limit created an 300 a day deficit. That's 2100 a week. By every cal I should have lost at least 1 lb a week. In 4 months I should have lost 16lbs. Not 8lbs.
I cut out alcohol. I started running/walking in 5K and 10k. and it was discouraging when I couldn't lose the weight. I feel off the wagon for 1 month. Now I am back on it. Have gained all 8lbs back. Funny how it took me 4 months to lose the weight but 1 month to gain it back. lol I am sure I didn't eat 3500 calories extra week. But oh well. Lets try this again. a 1300 calorie diet this time with 1hr of walking/running (3 miles) a day. Wish me luck = ( Ima need it lol
Incorporate fresh juice into your daily diet, you will see results immediately, fresh green juice with ginger and lemon will clean you out and speed up your metabolism, best part is you can still eat, just be wise in the choices you make...You'll lose that extra weight in no time.

And sorry, if your doctor is telling you that at 5'7" 110 pounds is a healthy weight for you and you need to get down to 110...find another doctor. Since about 120 is the low end of what you should weigh based on medical charts.
I get so sick of the whiners asking me how I stay thin. I'm 5'7" and weigh 117 (and I'm closing in on 40). At one point I got up to 140. I saw a picture of myself at my husband's 20 year reunion and was disgusted. I looked like a skinny person wearing a fat suit. I dropped all junk food from my diet, quit smoking, and started running – currently, I'm training for a 1/2 marathon. Is it easy? Not a bit! It's all about how bad you want to see results and how hard you're willing to work. Oh! And to you idiots who actually think all thin people are anexoric or bulimic – at 30, I weighed in at 102 and would beg my doctor to tell me how to gain weight. He would say for my frame I was the perfect size. Even now, my doctor says I need to drop to 110 to be a good weight for me. I get so sick of being asked if I eat. No one asks my 20 year old, 5'10", 155 lb daughter what she eats. Would you like a play-by-play of my breakfast? 1 bowl of kashi cereal, 2 eggs (yolks and all), 2 slices of whole grain bread, 3 cups of coffee with agave nectar, and 1 kiwi. Gosh! I love being me!!! At 28 I could lose weight easily too. 20 years, 3 kids and a busy career later and that weight doesn't come off so easily. I'm sure if I quit my job and spent those hours working out, the weight would come off too. This child needs to remember that many of us don't have the kind of free time she does to work out. I have no doubt that she worked very hard to lose those 20 lbs but to imply that anyone can shows she's been in show business too long and has forgotten what real life is like.

I have to agree.....when I'm up and running most days I can eat anything I want and although I just turned 50 my doctor tells me I'm going to outlive – of course no one really knows this – my friends. A little excercise and a very little of watching what you eat. I know for some it's a bit harder than for others but I would suggest the earlier you start in life the more you're bound to keep it up. I was a tomboy growing up, playing baseball, basketball, running so it's something I'm used to and still love.

I have lost over 200lbs. Was it easy? No. Did I have a personal trainer? No. Do I have health problems? Yes. It can be done. However, I have a problem with a person who already has a wonderful body spouting off like this. Maybe, just maybe, someone who has a weight problem has the deck stacked against them. Emotional as well as physical issues. Maybe they were raised to eat EVERYTHING on their plate because they didn't know when their next meal was coming. Maybe they eat because they were abused and food was a comfort factor. Maybe, just maybe, they have health problems that, regardless of what they put in their mouth, it turned to fat and maybe it wasn't discovered until they were able to get the proper health insurance after they grew up because their parents were doing the best they could but couldn't afford it. I have a thyroid problem, I am insulin resistant, and, because of the 3 jobs I worked while trying to get out of poverty, I have arthritis, herniated disks, and extreme back problems. I would not have been able to lose the weight if it hadn't been for my health insurance that diagnosed some of these problems and, now that I take medication, has led to a healthier me. My body is now able to use the food I eat properly where it couldn't before. What do I eat?? Protein for muscle, mainly. I limit my carbs, I do not drink soda of any kind and I do not drink alcohol or smoke. Never have. I am a vegetable and fruit fanatic, but they carry carbs that most people don't think about, though natural are carbs non-the-less. I am far from lazy, I wanted to lose weight, and did, but not until I realized what was going on health wise w/my body. Education is the key to a healthier you. To say I didn't lose weight because I didn't want to is a statement of great abuse to those of us who have lived on the other side of skinny. You have no idea of what the other side of the coin looks like until you flip it over. Not to mention, every person is different, with different issues, and body images. You cannot group everyone in the same group and expect them to come out the same and get the same results. Mila is young and beautiful and blessed w/talent. She should be thankful for what she is able to accomplish, grateful that it was easier for her to lose weight than most and above all, get the facts before she makes a blanket statement that is hurtful and insensitive to others. Young girls look up to you Mila, help them develop a good body image, use your celebrity encourage them to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. My first reaction, shake my head and sigh. But immediately comes to mind, she is a very young ignorant actress who gets paid to look beautiful and stay fit. She is not in a job that she gets to be in an office for 8+ hours a day sitting in front of a computer. Part of her job is to workout to stay in shape, go to salon get pampered so that she would look as if she barely did anything to herself. Also, have you heard an actress say that I've never really had to work that hard to have this body...people would say that they are arrogant. We all know that just because you get to be on camera, or interviewed and quoted, does not make you that bright...

just because you take insulin shots doesn't mean that you defy the laws of physics. In order to maintain obese level body mass you need to have a caloric surplus. The fatter you are, the more calories you need to maintain that level of body mass.

Yeah, as someone who was overweight and decided I didn't want that life anymore – and did something about it, I must say I agree with Mila in general. No, it doesn't apply to the one guy's fat wife in a wheelchair. Of course not. I think it's pretty clear she wasn't really talking about people with disabilities (although overweight people with disabilities is a whole separate and very real issue). If people commit themselves and read up about the food they're eating, they can do it. I work full time, have a family, pay my bills, volunteer, care for my lawn and home, and run marathons and lift weights. I lost weight and love my life because of it. I don't say this as a self-congratulatory thing; just as a case statement that is meant to show that if you decide to stop with the excuses and just make a change, it's all within your reach.
Look, a lot of people who are able to lose weight when they knuckle down are overweight because they made poor choices about diet or exercise or both. However, some people, such as myself, who has their doctor look at them and tell them that if they want to lose any kind of weight they'll need to go on an extreme diet consisting of no more than 700 calories a day and exercising 2 hours daily to get back down to a normal weight but that it would also take a very very very long time for the weight to come off because not only do I have PCOS (which I've had since I hit puberty), I have a non-functioning metabolism and insulin resistance. I was able to stay slender as a teenager because I exercised between 5 and 6 hours a night and when you're exercising you're not eating. I ate a healthy diet, but the minute I stopped exercising (due to injuries) the weight would steadily creep up. Essentially, there was little I could do and ultimately decided that I would rather go through life altering surgery than to continue to gain weight. I am happy to report that the medical intervention has been a success and I exercise daily, watch my food intake but am finally able to lose weight that I never could before. I will always have PCOS, and a lowered metabolism, but now I have a fighting chance to at least be at a healthy weight without devoting my entire life to my weight and weight control.
Lots of whining here, I'm guessing from a lot of fat people. The fact is that aside from a few medical conditions that very few people actually have, most of weight loss is willpower. I agree with Kunis' sentiment that if you put your mind to it, you will most likely succeed. I'm in my mid-30's (wow, when did that happen) and lost over 50lbs two years ago. I didn't go on any crazy diet or do any special program. I do cardio for 35 minutes 3 times a week and do 1 hour of weight training twice a week. I also stopped drinking soda, eating potato chips, and being mindful of daily caloric intake. I went from 202lbs, to 150lbs, then put on 12 lbs of muscle. My brother, following my exact same methods, has gone from 285lbs to 222lbs in 8 months. It really isn't that hard, you just have to be disciplined enough to make it happen.
So for those writing this off as the rantings of a 20-something, take a look in the mirror at your fat self and get motivated enough to do something about it. Or, you know, continue to say that you can't lose weight, continue to blame other people or the media for your "body image issues" and enjoy your Big Macs...fatty.

I agree with you 100%. I lost 55 lbs. in 9 months and have a Thyroid condition that destroys my metabolism. I take a multivitamin and make sure to drink enough water. Get off your fat butt and do some cardio. Stop making excuses and come up with a solution to lose your weight.
I agree and disagree. Yes those people scarfing down the Big Macs can learn some self control and just say no to it. But there are also those with legitimate medical issues where it's not just a matter of willpower. I was always a skinny chick until my mid 20-s and for a couple of years after I had my child I went up to 160 lbs (I'm 5'4) which is the heaviest I've ever been. I thought back to the days when I was thin and wanted to be attractive again for my husband and for myself, and over the next couple of years went down to 115 lbs. Not doing exercise actually (so I'm not toned, but "skinny fat" lol), just eating better and snacking healthier. Now I'm creeping up to 125 lbs again and I will fully admit that I am just too darn lazy to work out at the gym, I abhor exercise, I would rather just watch what I eat. I find gyms and exercise boring as hell and have no motivation whatsoever. So, I reap what I sow. I won't be a hard body anytime soon but at least I'm no longer fat. Point is, take responsibility for what you are and yes you can change if you want to in the majority of cases, don't just "let yourself go"
I love people here saying they have pcos or other medical conditions that keep them from losing weight. Here,s how i see it:
1. Most of you are full of it, have not been diagnosed with a medical problem but are still using it as an excuse for being fat.
2. Even with a medical condition, the fat doesn't just come from thin air. You have taken in too many calories to get fat, there is no medical condition that is going to change this basic fact...fat can not be made without taking in more calories than your body needs.
Lastly, stop kidding yourself that you look fine and that people accept you for what you are. Fat people disgust us heathier people, the way you look, the amount you eat, and your stupid excuses for not getting your weight under control.
You assume that people are not eating a normal diet. I can attest that a normal diet for someone with severe PCOS and an impaired metabolism will never be able to eat anything close to normal amounts of food, with a normal sized stomach. Lets face it, if your body only burns 1100 calories at rest, then the doctor tells you that in order to lose weight, because of your condition, you have to drop your calorie count to at least 600 and increase your exercise to between 2 and 3 hours daily, most people are going to gain weight because that kind of extreme dieting with normal anatomy is torture.
That being said, if someone has these problems, there is medical intervention that one can undergo that alters the anatomy and makes weight loss possible. I did it and I am only 3 months out from my RNY but I've finally managed to lose weight that I have struggled with for years. Is it extreme? Yes it is, but I didn't just take what my body was willing to dish out to me laying down, I got proactive about it. And guess what, I'm able to exercise an hour a day and my calorie intake is around 600 calories a day and I am no longer feeling like I am being tortured.
How about you google PCOS and do some research before you accuse. PCOS made me gain 50 lbs in a year. During this whole year I was counting calories and working out FIVE days a week, wearing a bodymedia armband and I was burning more than I was consuming, and the weight kept coming on. I have been to the Dr. and I have been diagnosed. it is not an excuse. it's a fact. I sure as hell dont want to be fat. Sometimes you cant help it.
When I read the headline, all I thought of was "You f'ing *itch", but then when I read the article I knew what she was trying to say. I have struggled with my body since the second puberty kicked in. I am one of those people who always needs to eat a certain way, or else moderation actually does make me gain weight. What works as moderation for some, is RARE for me! When losing weight it would frustrate me that the average person (overweight, but not obese) loses 2-3 pounds a week and I know yeah that fluctuates. I would exercise, drink a ton of water, and eat a healthy diet, and would slowly see the scale move. Yeah I know inches, blah, blah, blah. You can lose weight, but not everyone loses it as quickly as others. To me that's why I would always yoyo. I wouldn't see the results I wanted and gave up becoming fat again.
Me again. Only have that big meal after your weight lifting workouts. You don't need a big meal after your cardio workouts.
Hi fatties. You too can look as awesome as I do. All you need to do is follow as many of the following steps as possible.
1) Drink only water and some tap water won't kill you.
2) Stop eating out if you're fat and want to lose weight.
3) Split your meals into 5 or 6 a day every three hours or so instead of three big ones.
4) Eat 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh, per day. Protein is the most important thing. You can skim on the other stuff but protein is required for muscle which burns calories even while you're just laying in bed.
5) Go to GNC and buy some Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard™ Double Rich Chocolate. Don't buy that crap "protein drink" from Wal-mart that has more fat or carb calories than protein. Use it to help you reach that 1 gram of protein per pound goal. These shakes are delicious and are great with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Less cooking!
6) Buy some HEB lean microwaveable chicken. These chicken breasts are already cooked and then froze. All they need is 2 minutes in the microwave. They are very convenient.
7) Lift weights. If you're a girl, don't think you're going to grow big bulky muscles. It is hard to get big muscles and much much harder for women who have less testosterone.
8) Do 30 to 45 minutes a cardio every other day in the morning on an empty stomach (8 hour or so fast). You can burn 300% more fat calories this way than doing cardio any other time of the day.
9) After your workout have a protein drink, preferably mixed with some dextrose or maltodextrine sugar to help your body absorb it faster and better.
10) An hour and a half later after you're drink which you had after you're workout, you'll be hungry. Make sure to eat your biggest meal after you're workout. You're muscles will need it to get stronger.
and what about those of us who have an elevated testosterone level and hormones that are completely out of whack? If you have never had to deal with a medical issue that causes you to consider suicide as a pretty tempting alternative to continued weight gain because despite watching every morsel you put into your mouth and counting your calories daily and working out at least 2 hours a day at the gym and seeing the scale go almost no where in over a year and the moment you have to stop exercising due to illness or injury the weight starts to creep back up, then you will never be able to understand what I or others in my shoes have gone through. Is my condition rare? The severity of it certainly is, but with so many women being diagnosed with PCOS we need to start looking for the root cause of the disease and then treat that and focus on a cure. And p.s. when I work out with weights, I start to bulk up so I have to be incredibly careful when I lift weights and that is because of naturally elevated testosterone levels. If you are not a doctor who specializes in endocrine disorders, you really don't know what you are talking about.

You're fat because you are lazy and lack enough discipline to stay in shape. Losing weight is incredibly easy. Losing weight while gaining muscle at the same time, now that's a bit tougher.

****Correction. I am 32 years old and have PCOS. I've lost 70 lbs with the help of Metformin. Prior to my diagnosis, I wasn't able to lose the weight. With Weight Watchers and exercising 5 times a WEEK, I am now 5'6 131 lbs.
Yup, money helps....get a trainer, etc....just wait until she hits 40 and she realizes that your body changes. I was always "slim and since my 2nd child (and a myriad of other issues), I gained 30 pounds. I've lost 18 lbs now in the past 13 weeks and let me tell you...it is tough. And yes, I'm a foodie too. She's not an inspiration to anyone- she's just plain stupid.
I have 32 years old and have PCOS. I've lost 70 lbs. with the help of Metformin. I couldn't lose an ounce before my diagnosis. I followed Weight Watchers, tracked all my meals and exercised five times a day to lose the weight. Guess what? This is a life change and doesn't come easy.

Wow. A lot of people get reeeeeally defensive on the weight issue. Look, it's simple. Take in more calories than you expend = gain weight. Expend more than you take in = lost weight. Except for rare situations, if you are fat it is your fault. I know, I'm a good 30 lbs overweight, and I've readjusted my lifestyle to rectify the situation. It all depends on your priorities and your willpower.

This is actually pretty accurate. I've dropped 25 pounds in the past 6 months. I was in a miserable relationship and I just didn't care anymore so I let myself slip. Now that I'm single I've been able to WANT to be thin and that means eating right, running, and lots of situps. Good call Mila, for those of you who are Teed at Mila examine yourself, a little introspection never made anyone gain weight!
My sympathies with all of you. I agree totally. For 25 years I looked like a whale. And yes, I love food. I still do. But I woke up one day, moved back home (altho' Thomas Wolfe wrote, "Don't do that.", etc.) And I was so bored and reclusive, I just said, "This lard is coming off." And in 6 months I lost 60 pounds. Sheer will. No commercial diets. No weight loss hype. I just shed it off. And the plateau? When you lose about 35 pounds and then nothing comes off for 6 weeks? Oy. But I got it off. Kept it off. I will never be in a place where I lug around an anvil for a stomach again.
As for Mila? If she ever thought SHE was fat? Strap the anvil to her stomach and ask her how she feels the next day.

I am American but travel frequently for my work. In no other country I have visited (some 75) are there obese people like in the US. Being overweight has become the norm, acceptable. When I was younger I could not gain weight no matter what I did. Now at 57 years of age I am probably overweight by 25 lbs and "cannot" lose it. Nonsense – I could if I set my mind to it. Just like my overweight friends who do nothing but complain about their weight but pile their plates high at every opportunity. Yes there are medical conditions, but most of us could do it – the rest of the world proves it.
But, I can't lose weight eating all the crap that I love.
Clearly Mila Kunis has never had a medical problem that prevents you from losing weight. I'll grant you that the majority of people most likely do not have them but these problems DO exist.

Well, Im pretty sure that EVERYONE that can afford a personal trainer and a chef can lose the weigh too. Im not saying it's not possible, I recently lost 60 pounds and it took a lot of work. But I would not going on generalizing on the issue. Everyone is different and sometimes the situation and the lack of resources can make it harder.

Ask anyone, taking off those last few pounds is HARD. Imagine already being thin and taking off another 20 while building muscle. That's what Kunis did. It was work... with a trainer, cook, assistant, and more sure, its a bit easier, but she did the sweating. You can't hire someone to do that for you. It IS all about how hard you want it, even if your are not young, have health problems etc. If you want to be healthier, add muscle, lose fat, bad enough YOU will find a way to get moving and eat better.
For those who think metabolism can't be a problem, the average body temperature in the US is dropping while levels of Vitamin D are also dropping. I'd suggest having your Vitamin D levels checked and get them up there. Give it a year and see what happens. I've been Vitamin D deficient my entire life, with a body temp a full degree below "normal' and trouble with weight. All of a sudden this was discovered and now, even before my vitamin levels have become normal, my body temp is 98.6 for the first time – and the soft tissues in my neck don't hurt, my fibromyalgia trigger points aren't so sore and my face is beginning to change. This won't show up on thyroid tests or some other medical tests, but my be the key for some. And it can't hurt you to try!
I'd love to see her respond to her own statements in about, oh, 20-30 years. Ok, so she is young, doesn't have medical problems, and is wealthy enough to afford a personal trainer. It'll catch up. Ask Linda Ronstadt, Elizabeth Taylor and a host of other celebs who have gained weight and remained graceful. I'm ill with lupus, in my 60's and disappointed in weight gain – but I refuse to be ugly! Now it's all about the hair, a bit of jewelry and some graceful clothing. Weight loss? Not in the picture.
How old is she? Well, I had no problem losing weight when I was in my 20s, either. I'd like to hear her repeat her opinion about weight loss – when her metabolism slows to a crawl because her thyroid stops working. Of course, it would be easier to engage in calorie-burning activities when you don't have to actually work 40 to 60 hours every week and you can get enough sleep, because other people are doing your laundry and cleaning your house.
I'm only aware of her (and her screeching voice) in the idiot TV series with the idiot Kutcher. Apparenly, she can't get any decent TV or movie roles, meaning anything I'd watch. I guess that makes me lucky.

I understand that SOME people have illnesses that prevent them from being active, but MOST overweight people do not. Nearly half of the US population is not suffering from PCOS or low thyroid or injuries or whatever!
I am a 49 year old single parent with two kids, a house and yard to keep up – I do my own laundry, yard work, house cleaning, I work a full-time job and I help my dad who's ill. I eat healthy food, exercise when I can and I weigh 126 pounds. It's possible. I don't watch tv – i go for a walk, bike ride or to the gym.
I just ate a full lunch – pasta with tomatoes, olives, spinach and white beans, some broccoli, hummus and carrots and cantiloupe. (Small servings of each, but I like variety!) I cook all my own food including bringing lunch to work, AND I sleep. I even find time to read books! It can be done, it all depends on the choices you make.

I am offended by her comments (and alot of other peoples). I am not obese, however, am also not super skinny. I am a size 10 that used to be a size 6. In the past I have had enough self discipline to lose weight if I wanted. I used to think exactly what she said. However, my situation has changed. I now have two illnesses that cause me to go on steroid treatments frequently (a side effect is weight gain). I also juggle like many others a family and a full time job. Not to mention I am only awake 12 hours out of the day (i have to take medication every four hours just to stay awake). I eat very healthy, however, cannot exercise. I am not making excuses, i am following my doctors orders. I think I used to be nieve and think she is too. I don't think she meant to offend people but she did.

I hate wishing bad things upon people... but I sort of hope she has PCOS, thyroid issues or a vitamin D deficiency down the road so she can really understand it's not always clear-cut.
I am on 100mcg of Synthroid/day (fairly high dose)for Hypothyroidism, I was diagnosed with both Arthritis and Fibromyalgia, and have had multiple surgeries because of the Arthritis, and it gives me no excuse whatsoever to be overweight, nor does extra weight help any of those conditions. I also had Vitamin D deficiency, which is easily treated with oral Vitaming D. Why do you wish illness on anyone? And especially because you're not willing to work to stay healthy.
So how exactly can Mila Kunis, who as far as I know has never had a weight problem (or a self-image problem, I'm guessing), empathize with people that struggle with their weight? Of course people lose weight if they eat less & exercise more. That doesn't make it easy. She might as well have said that gay people must not want to be straight.

Excuses, excuses...I'm 41 and lost over 50 lbs. My wife has lost over 120 lbs, and she's 37. Slow metabolism? Another excuse. Of course there are some exceptions, but mostly, it's a bunch of lazy, sloth-like creatures who want to cry about "acceptance" rather than changing themselves. Do you want mobility problems in your old age? Do you want Diabetes, Hypertension? Stop eating fast food and junk food and THINK about what you're putting in your body. I'm an American and I'll tell you right now, Americans are fat, lazy and take accountability for NOTHING. Look in the mirror and see who's to blame.

Ah, silly stars who think they're career trials equate to real life trials. Ask someone fighting a weight problem on medications that actually make losing weight extremely difficult, like an asthmatic person on a steroid inhaler, someone with sever diabetes or thyroid disease. Not everyone on this planet can afford a personal trainer, sweetheart.
It's an increasingly accepted notion; Diabetes, Thyroid Issues, and yes, Asthma are worsened (if not brought on) depending directly upon the diet we eat. There are places in the world called Blue Zones, where the people commonly live to 90, 100 years of age, and they live well. To everyone who says they don't have time to lose weight because they have a full time job, I was a full time student and lost 50lbs while cooking in two restaurants(bbq and pizza). Stop lying to yourself.

first of all, she is 18, so she has no idea of what time, stress, babies, injuries and so forth can do to your body – not to mention illness.
i was an athletic 130 lbs until i was involved in an on duty accident that blew out both my knees requiring surgery, taking (from time of injury to surgery and recovery) approxiately 9 mo's and then a year later sustained a serious neck injury which has left me limited in my abilities. i am no longer 130, but a hefty 165 and while i would rather be thin, it is definitely a back seat wish over being able to do things that i once could. i'd give anything to be able to go to the gym, play ball with my daughter or even do my housework in a frenzy so i can relax the rest of the day. just not happening. i hope nothing ever happens to this girl, but perhaps her time will come when she sees that being overweight doesn't mean you are lazy or don't have the drive. i'm a marine. trust me, i know motivation.
Thank you, Traci. You speak for many thousands of us who are overweight because of disability, not disabled due to obesity. The public needs to know the difference, and this includes physicians!
Eating a plant based diet while laid up for months on end, whether while healing or simply being a lazy beast, doesn't leave folks obese and unable to get going once they're feeling better, finally bored, or finished lamenting over PPD, etc. How many of us (ranting) place determined focus on not poisoning ourselves with animal protein. 1) Most celebrities get a lot of help, so I don't credit their opinions heavily.
2) That said, she actually does have a point. I have a $10/month membership to Planet Fitness. They're open 24 hours on weekdays, so the timing is no excuse. I've been doing for a little over a week, dropped a pound so far.
3) Either be fat and happy, or lose weight.

By and large, if you look at the lifestyles of overweight people, they are often not living lifestyles conducive to weight loss. Big surprise. I'm with Mila on this one.
i know a lot of fit and healthy people in their 30s and older with full tme jobs and families. kids and work is a lame excuse. and i don't think i know anyone with a medical condition that effects their weight. they all just eat like crap. i know medical conditions exist but they're A LOT less common then poor eating habits and laziness.
Look, Mila may not have sugar-coated her points but she's right. The truth is that most people put more effort into making excuses than they do into making a difference. It doesn't take a personal trainer and all day in the gym, in fact most will tell you that diet and nutrition is 80% of changing your physique. The gym is just a supplement to aid you.

Ali, I'm with you. I don't have PCOS, but I do have other medical issues (including inherited cardiac problems) that have on some pretty interesting medications. It takes everything I've to to not gain more weight, much less lose it. And yes, I am working with my doctor on this.

Jessica, I am not 20 years old anymore, and I've had an eating disorder for years (I never think of it as cured), but the truth is, if I don't keep my weight where it's supposed to be, it is not because I can't, it's because I DON'T. I also have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, but there again, I take Synthroid daily, and I have to stay vigilant about my weight. Yes, weight loss may be harder, but I assure you, I have no personal trainer, no personal chef, and I have to do the job, even though I have severe Fibromyalgia, and Arthritis. My exercises have to be different, and I have to put that fork down when I've eaten what my body needs, not what I want. No excuses, girl, no excuses.... Mila is right; you just don't want to hear the truth.
I was obese and tried for years to lose weight and never succeeded. It was not because I couldn't, but because I was not trying hard enough. Mila is right, if you want to lose it bad enough you will. I work 8+ hours a day, don't have a personal chef or a trainer. What I have is determination – I have lost 75 pounds and counting.

Please, I am there, late thirties, decreased metabolism, two kids and a full time job. It may take more effort than 10 years ago, but I still find time to exercise (by getting up early) and eat healthy food (by planning ahead).

There's something wrong in a society that says drive yourself into the ground by losing sleep to fit in everything everyone else thinks you ought to be doing. It's a little harder than it was 15 years ago, but I had two babies in my 30s and lost all of the baby weight both times even then. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. I don't have a trainer or a chef, but I DO go to the gym and stay active daily. I don't exercise for 8 hours a day or completely deprive myself, but I do eat sensible meals and lots of fruits and veg. And I don't watch much television – get off the butt and into the sneakers!

Seriously, Amber, what's with all these people talking about needing to join a gym and have a personal chef? I eat healthy at home. I do Pilates tapes at home. I go for daily walks. Losing weight is not easy but it's doable. I'm sure you get that! I didn't join a gym or have my own cook when I lost 25 pounds. I worked hard and I did it on my own.
Most folks I know that struggle with weight also have had either an auto-immune disease, a problem with Candida or parasites, food allergies, or some other sort of serious health related issue in their life. Just goes to show, you probably shouldn't judge a person based on appearance (i.e. overweight is judged as lazy or undisciplined)... because you probably don't know the whole story.
Not everyone has the financial resources or expendable time that she has. Nor do they have personal trainers, chefs, and/or other supports that allow someone in her position live so well.
Sounds like you're making excuses to me. And that's exactly Mila's point. If you want something enough, you will find a way to do it. You will choose a salad rather than a burger from a fast food joint. You will drink water instead of soda or coffee. You will find the extra 1-2 hours a week to go to the gym. You can do these things if you choose to do them. It all starts with your choices.

Anna, you are going to be in for a long, long wait. Mila is very grounded and down to earth and has a very good head on her shoulders. She is a refreshing change from many in the industry. It is a shame a very reasonable "general" statement has been blown up....how dare she suggest if somebody puts their mind to it, and shows discipline and consistent effort they can achieve a goal.

I work a full time job and have two small kids, I found time to exercise by getting up half an hour earlier and going for a run or doing an exercise DVD, the only thing it cost me was a pair of running shoes and a dvd. Saying you don't have time is basically just a bad excuse. Now, if you worked two jobs I might buy it.....
We do our priorities. If maintaining your weight is important, then you will do it. That is the bottom line. Most people have to work full time and many people stay healthy without a trainer or chef. Hollywood types are often underweight or on the thin side of healthy and that is why they have to spend so much time in a gym. My height has a 35 pound window for healthy weight. I'm usually in the middle to upper end, but I don't let myself go outside of my window. You can do it.
It's amazing how many people would be upset/offended by Mila's statements. It's true...there are people in wheel chairs, or people with thyroid problems. But, most overweight people either eat too much or exercise too little or both. Those are the people she is speaking about. Her statement is totally true.

I agree ... I joined a weight loss program in January, my goal was to lose 20 pounds. Their program was easy: I was given a number of points to eat each day (most foods/bevs have a point value, other than fruits and veg), I had to exercise (exercise has a certain number of points too). I lost it in 4 months. I'm maintaining my weight now and have lost a total of 35 pounds. I don't deny myself ANYTHING (I'm actually chewing on a Special K bar at the moment), I just don't eat as much of the "fun stuff" as I used to and exercise more (30 mins of cardio 4x a week). A couple of weeks ago I made some chocolate/toffee bars and was sooooo tempted - then I looked at a photo of myself from Christmas (eek!) and the next morning I brought the bars for my co-workers. I learned I can't keep stuff like that in the house, but if I have to spend $2.50 on ONE such bar at the bakery (instead of making my own TRAY for about $5.00), so be it. You need to find out your weak areas and then push them out of your way. If you want to lose weight YOU CAN. You just have to make up your mind to do it. Like Yoda said, "Do or do not –there is no try." If I can lose the weight, anybody can.
In the weekly meetings I attend, MANY of the people there have been there before me and have not lost any or very little weight. When you ask them if they are exercising or tracking what they eat, they are either doing it half-heartedly or not at all. I had a friend join the program (she also needs to lose about 20 pounds) and she was not tracking what she ate. She wanted to drop out because she could not lose the weight. I told her to do exactly what I did for one week - track and the same amount of exercise. She did and that week she lost 4 pounds.
Losing the weight and keeping it off gave a stronger backbone in everything else in my life too and life goals that I thought I was too weak to achieve - well, now I feel empowered and think "I did not think I could lose so much weight and be resolved in staying committed either; who knows what else I can do when I set my mind to it?"
im really upset im not living up to her expectations. i mean who am i to not drop everything and hire a personal trainer, a private chef and spend 8 hours a day @ the gym! but i live in the real world and as long as i do my job my boss doesnt care that im a person of size (to be pc since saying im fat upsets everyone) and am losing it my way. and my 4 year old niece hugs me and tells me "youre not fat youre fluffy!". so hurl away trollers and shame on you MK for presuming you know what you are talking about!
Alecia. Stop making excuses. You don't need a personal trainer or need to work out 8 hours a a day to stay thin. I'm in great shape, and do it by going to the gym on average 2.6 times a week and eating right. Read a couple of books about bodybuilding nutrition. High protein (not high fat) diets are the key.

There ARE conditions in which a person CANNOT lose weight and a person who has never had a weight problem in their life *hint*hint* SHOULD NOT be saying the above sentence UNLESS she/he has either a a)medical degree (and I'm talking a PhD) or b)Nutriontist Degree.
And you're assuming that Mila wasn't speaking speaking specifically to the reporter when she said "you" why? It would be pretty ignorant to assume she meant 100% of the overweight population when she made that statement but don't let that get in the way of convincing yourself you can't lose weight.
This is for a magazine article. Who reads magazines? People read them. So if someone says "I hate when people drive like idiots" or "People say they can't lose weight..." What is more broad than that? I'm sure she understand that a small percentage of people have a medical reason for being overweight.
I bet if you didn't feed her she would lose weight. To get anger at a statement like this shows how obtuse you really are.
I can't believe people argue with her statement. Everything she said is true. The thing that I think people are missing is what "want to" means. You have to really want to. If you skip exercising or decide to eat more today and get back on it tomorrow you are showing that you don't "really want to". To stay motivated and to do what it takes you have to want it and stick to it, otherwise the road to losing weight will be tougher or impossible. It doesn't matter who you are. If you are a conscious non-paralyzed person you can control your weight. It may be easier for some then for others, but you can do it. I am overweight and the reason I still am is because I still must not "really want to" lose weight. I can come up with all kinds of excuses to short circuit my weight loss. I can accept that, and not call Mila stupid for being bluntly factual.

You Misses MD, DO, etc. But you are right that a huge amount of diet and medical information is being spouted by actors. Apparently the idea is that because they are good at acting/singing, they are experts in another.

I think MONEY is a great motivator and I'm quite sure Mila got PAID to get in that kind of shape. She's never had a weight problem so for her to even have an opinion on this subject just ticks me off.
Yeah well I did and I literally worked my a$$ down 6 sizes to a healthy weight. Non-processed food, reduced sugar, and increased exercise. Take that fad diets. I also allowed myself treats every once in awhile, and refused to count calories or obsess over the scale. I was not paid to do it and I don't have all day to work out because I work full time and go to school. If you really want to put in the work you will. I disagree that EVERYONE can do this, most people are too lazy and there are diseases that make weight loss hard like PCOS or thyroid issues, but note I said hard not impossible. Many people also fail because they are deluded into thinking that they can be a size 2 and when it doesn't happen they give up far too easily, news flash...focus on a healthy weight and not the clothing size, not everyone should be a size 2
Agreed, I find it pretentious and gauling when skinny people who have never had a weight or 'ugly' problem and have never needed to 'work at it', try to coach others. Talk to me when you've got 80lbs of pork to slough off, relate to me only when you have to live at the gym and eat nothing but apples, lettuce and chicken breasts every goddam day.!

Incredibly naive? No. Incredible stupid? Yes. For some not trying hard is true, but there are many reasons one cannot lose weight. It's just plain ignorance on some people's part to assume that EVERYONE only need to put their mind to it. These are the people who have never had the issue, or who see the fat person scarfing the big-mac. Who have never smoked or who were able to quit cold turkey, therefor, everyone can. Who can drink in moderation, again, everyone can. Addicts, just put down that syringe or pipe, better yet, be an invisible kid like me, and just say no. Some people just don't want to learn, or hear.
Jojo, she's an ignorant little 20-something. She has no idea what can happen with hormone issues PCOS, anything else that might make losing weight difficult. Plus, I"m sure she's got a $200 an hour personal trainer access, which most people do not, and most likely a dietician and/or personal chef. Poor thing. Once she hit's her mid-thirties, it'll change. That said, it IS possible to lose weight with those medical issues. It just takes a heck of a lot longer to do it. It can be frustrating, exhausting and extremely difficult to do, but it's possible. It just really takes a desire to do it, because there are lots of ups and downs, and it sucks when only a few ounces comes off in a week, another week a few ounces comes back on... But it is doable. Her flippancy about it is annoying, though.
When you are able to make excuses for when you can't lose weight, you stay heavy. At the end of the day a calorie is a calorie. 3,500 calories = 1lb of fat. Nothing in the entire world will change that.
I agree with her 100%! I have danced the 'dieting dance' for many years and it's simple: You work hard, eat right and the weight comes off. I've had miserable days when I felt that I had done my best but when I look back, I really did just enough to make me get by, but as soon as I hit the ground running, put down the mountains of junk food and was focused on living instead of existing, the fat literally melted off my body! Love this chick! thanks for telling it like it is Mila!

I agree with her, but her natural weight is already good. If I had to lose 80 pounds and keep it off itd be a different story...and why does she say to keep a positive outlook or you go to a dark place. Is she hiding something from herself?

A calorie is a calorie, but metabolisms vary. One of the first scientific studies of obesity started with the idea of measuring incredibly fit men, then making them gain weight. The problem? It was incredibly hard to get the men to gain the weight. Obviously there are many more variables to weight loss, but to assume that all people will gain the same amount of weight when fed the same diet is ignorant.
If you're fat, its because you eat too much and do too little. That's a fact. Everything else is BS. If you're fat, its because you deserve to be fat. Fix that.......
It's true. The human body is a simple system of calories in and calories out. What goes into your mouth and the amount of exercise you do is completely up to you. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Eat broccoli instead of a bag of chips. Stop drinking starbucks coffee flavored milk and sugar and have some water. It's not rocket science. What do you think would happen if you fed your houseplants starbucks instead of water? There is no medical condition or syndrome that will make you fat if you exercise and eat healthy food. Stop making excuses, or stop complaining about your weight problems and accept yourself for the way you are.
@sandy people's metabolisms are different, yes. Proper eating and exercise will change even the slowest metabolism in as short as 3 weeks to a much better rate. The body follows patterns. It's no different than waking up at the same time as your alarm clock when you don't set the alarm. As someone who weighed 360 lbs, and now at 230 I have some experience with this. No personal trainers, no private chef, no get thin quick scheme from late night television, no dangerous diet pills or illegal drugs. Just smart eating and exercise. Everything else is an excuse.
Hey at all these people saying there is no Medical Condition that can cause you to gain weight cough JOE cough. I suggest that you read up on Hypothyroidism, that is just one of many that can cause weight gain. Of course there are people that are fat just because they eat too much, but wow, some of the statements on here, I am starting to wonder what the heck they teach in school anymore, in fact I think I am going to pull my kids out of public school right now.
Fit men have a higher percentage of muscle mass to total body weight. % Muscle composition is a primary driver of metabolism. That's why they resist weight gain vs a fat slob...
People reveal their ignorance (or misconceptions) of what they know (or rather don't know) about human physiology more than any other subject.
The bottomline: You can lose weight if you must but you have to understand how the body works...and, that explains why less than 1 in 50 are able to sustain long term weight loss (> than 5 years). It's not as simple as eat 1200 calories and have your thyroid checked!
Odds are, more than half of the people responding here are obese or very overweight, as are most Americans. Most Americans are fat. Period. But it wasn't always this way. Think about it...
Medical conditions aside, many of which mentioned here are either caused or worsened by being overweight, Mila is exactly correct. Eat less, move more. Period. No, you may not turn into a super model, but you'll look and feel a whole lot better. And be healthier overall.
I watch the way "normal" (aka: fat) Americans eat, and it's no secret why they are fat. Everything they eat is either white, brown or beige (which means, no vibrant, healthy veggies and fruits). They drive instead of walk, consider regular exercisers to be crazy or fanatical or magical in some way, and consider you a health freak if you eat properly, aka: mostly veggies, fruit, whole grains and lean proteins. II've worked with an obese woman for 5 years now, and have never seen her eat a vegetable outside of iceberg lettuce. It's all nutrionally void bready, pizza crust type foods, fatty cheeses, candy, chips, processed carbs, gravies, meat....you get the picture. Yet she had gastric bypass surgery and wonders why the weight doesn't come off.
Overly processed, white, nutritionally devoid fried and breaded foods are NOT a 'normal' healthy way to eat. Sitting on your behind ALL DAY LONG FROM SUN UP TO SUN DOWN is not 'normal.' Result? Fat. Plain and simple.
Mila is correct and it's unfortunate that over half of the citizens of this country are too immature and self-centered to 'get' it.
Okay....for all of you below who state that if you fat your fat, the rest is BS, or that people are lazy and whatever....have you ever heard of a little condition called Hypothyroidism, or Cushing's Syndrome, or Kidney, Heart or Liver Disease? I could go on, but seriously those people ignorant to belive that EVERYONE who is overweight is due to the fact that they eat too many big mac's. There is probably an overwhelming percentage of people who are as you say "lazy" and are fat because they over eat crap food and do nothing about it, but DON'T categorize everyone the same, because that makes you no different then the celebraty your making fun of
A tiny minority of people are hypothyroid. An even tinier number of people have Cushing's disease or other conditions that cause metabolic problems. The rest of us are eating things that make us fatter: too many calories, too much sugar or artificial sweeteners that shut down the metabolism, and not nearly enough nutritional value.

While there are probably some hormonal explanations for why obese people find it hard to stay on a diet (google 'ghrelin' and 'leptin') this does not explain the obesity and diabetes epidemic in this country. The real problem is that people load up on too much sugar in the form of twinkies, frappacinos, juice (including 'energy drinks') and coke/pepsi/mountain dew.

I work in medical, therefore, I work with a lot of fat people. I find that a lot of them are fat b/c they are lazy. Some of the things that I need them to do for my job are not strenuous, but they sure act like they are.
Before you jump down my throat, I want you to ask yourself a question: Is what I'm about to say an excuse for fat people? If the answer is yes, then you are an enabler, and therefore part of the problem and not the solution.
First let me say I am all of 120 pounds and speak completely free of emotion on the subject. With that preface I say yes to her being naive and she admitted it. I think she is light hearted and would hate to upset any with this statement. With that said, I could see being upset when reading, as I noticed this statement right away because she neglects noting that many have medical conditions that prevent weight loss. But on her end I could also see being upset that every thing she says is posted and analyzed but us "judgementals" on a CNN Marquee blog and every other website in the online world. Now that would truly suck.
In some ways I agree with her, in some other ways, I do not.
She is still in her 20's and has not gone through the "shift" you feel when you hit around your 30's and your metabolism changes. She has not had any children so does not know what it's like to gain those 25-30lbs or more per child. Or what it takes to lose those last few lbs afterwards. She like many others, probably has her own personal trainer to help her keep in shape while the rest of us have to do it own her own. She as of yet (that we know of) does not have any medical reasons for weight gain and there are some believe me. Give her time, as she will discover that keeping in shape in your 20's is a lot easier than it is in our 40's where I am.
Now the other side of the fence. I am 43, have 2 children and have through increasing my exercise and maintaining a portion control program and have lost 24lbs. I would be happier with the last remaining 10lbs to get down to 116 – 117 on a 5'1" frame. It's now going to take a lot more work for those last 10 lbs, but if eating healthy and cutting out the junk and doing more weight bearing exercise can do it, I'm all in! I also know I am not in the majority or people. I have always enjoyed eating healthy, but with a desk job and too much of a good thing, it can still pack on the pounds.
Give her time, her tune will change with age.

TALK TO US AGAIN about weight loss Mila–when you are 45, your fat saving hormones kick in–an no matter how easily you shed weight before or was skinny into your 40s with no problems–you are gaining about 10 lbs or more a year and then some–and when you try to cut back or lose weight you either cannot lose even if you FAST for a week or it goes off really slowly but comes back really fast that 10 plus a few more–talk to us then–because a 20 anything who thinks they know about weight loss is like a backwoods, slewfooted pygmy who thinks he knows quantum physics .

Army19, thank you. I have an overactive thyroid and chronic fatigue syndrome, and you can GAIN weight from it. I am a teenager and over the past four years, I went from a healthy 115 pounds to 180 POUNDS. That's terrible. It's because with thyroid problems and CFS, your energy drops dramatically and your metabolism slows down. It's not because you're lazy or eat to much. I don't think Mila was making trying to say people with medical problems CAN lose weight they just choose not to. I think she's speaking about general public... couch potatoes... who complain about their weight but don't do anything to improve it. Mila's not one to talk since she hasn't had weight problem, but at least she's kept herself in shape.
