Tim Gunn on Hillary Clinton: What's with the pantsuits?

Things got a little "Mean Girls" on Tuesday's "Lopez Tonight" when “Project Runway” guru Tim Gunn expressed his exasperation over Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s sartorial choices.

“Why must she dress that way?” Gunn asked when Lopez brought up Hill’s outfits. But then came the kicker - a dig about Clinton's dressing like a dude: “I think she's confused about her gender [with] all these big, baggy menswear tailored pantsuits.”

“No, I'm really serious,” he continued, “(They're) unflattering.”

Lopez proceeded to ask how Clinton could hide “cankles,” to which Gunn replied, the issue is hemlines. "Well, if her pants didn't stop an inch above her ankle, she could hide the cankle!"

But after all the bashing, Gunn was quick to point out that even if Clinton doesn’t “make it work” with her outfits, he does admire her political achievements.

"I have great respect for her intellect and her tenacity and for what she does for our country in her governmental role," he said. "I just wish she could send a stronger message about American fashion."

FYI : Tim Gunn is a flaming fool ! He wouldnt know it but there are more important things than Fashion. I think she looks just fine for a woman of her age and stature.

Like everyone else, I think her job should be more important than what she wears. However, I would like to point out that only two women were Secretary of State before Hillary and those women are Madeline Albright and Condoleezza Rice. Rice and especially Albright had no problem getting into a skirt despite their travels so the notion that her job is too demanding for a skirt is not accurate. Furthermore, Gunn didn't say he disapproved of pants suits. He said her's were ill fitting. There's a pants suit – like the one Angelina wore at the Oscars or even the ones Nancy Pelosi wears on occasion. And then there's a pants suit a la Hillary style.

    Tim,
In her role as Sec'y of State, her pant suits are perfectly acceptable. It is impractical for a person in her position to wear dresses or skirts. She is constantly on the run. She is not running for fashion phenom and she looks exactly as she should. Love you, Tim, but you let Hilary be. She's just fine and doing a damn fine job of working for this country.

    • no names, please

I agree skirts are not practical for her position. I do not agree that she's doing a great job. Acceptable, mediocre maybe. At least she's not a complete buffoon like her husband. Hope she doesn't decide to run again.

Right on about the practicality. Tim lives in a bubble.

As I state later on the comments board, Madeline Albright and Condi Rice were Secretaries of State before Hillary and they had no problem wearing a skirt while traveling the world. So practicality has nothing to do with it. Furthermore, I think Tim Gunn has more a problem with the fit of her pants suits, not just that she wears them.

She hates freedom. She wanders the earth jabbering about internet openness, while slowly chipping away at at our rights on the web in the US at the behest of her corporate paymasters. /political rant

Back to normal marquee blog mode:
Hillary Clinton is a lesbean and should be smeared with delicious lesbean doodoo.

Seriously? Your rant is has no credibility and is ridiculous. If you want to call someone names, be sure you can spell them correctly.

@ Denise, Actually the first part of my statement has quite a bit of credibility. Do some research into COICA and PROTECT IP and other nonsense pushed by Hillary and this administration. /serious

      Marquee blog mode:
Hillary Clinton can often be found watching lesbean pron while dropping a butt weasel on the carpet of the oval office. Also she hates freedom.

I don't understand what all the hype is about here. Clinton is dressing in a professional manner. Do you see any of the lady Senators/congress(wo)men going into their jobs with a dress on? Didn't think so. Plus, if this is how she wants to dress, then leave her alone! The woman deserves (at least) that much. Respect HER, not just her politics!!

She's Secretary of State not some Hollywood actress or other celebrity. She looks respectful and dresses appropriately to her position.

I used to like Gunn . . . emphasis on the "used to" . . . isn't there enough mean spirit in America today?

Tim Gunn really??? He shops in the kid's section. As for fashion I'm not crazy about all the choices he makes and some comments should be kept to himself. Where's his fashion line? Why is this a story?

Really? "Four"? For is the correct choice. It's so sad to see such horrific grammatical errors in articles on cnn.

"....what she does four our country...." FOUR? REALLY? Doesn't anyone edit these articles. I'm continually amazed at the literacy rate in this country.

Looks like they corrected the error ("four" instead of "for") in the article. Thanks, CNN!
