'Harry Potter' knocks over 'Star Wars' to become top grossing franchiseIf there was an Olympics of box office records, surely the wizards of Hogwarts would have more than a few medals by now. In the latest update on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2's" box office domination comes news that the "Potter" movies have collectively pushed past the "Star Wars" films to become the top grossing franchise in the history of the domestic box office. As of Friday morning, the eight "Harry Potter" films grossed $2.234 billion domestically overall, according to a rep from Warner Bros. "Star Wars," meanwhile, pulled in $2.218 billion domestically, although this record does not reflect an adjustment for price inflation. When it comes to "Potter's" global appeal, the franchise has held on to the top spot as the highest earning franchise since 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." The series of films, with the release of the last one, crossed the $7 billion mark in global box office returns this week, Warner Bros. announced Thursday. |

Although I do love Harry Potter, but the original Star Wars movies are just classics.
Why don't you guys adjust for inflation then. How about some effort.
Not fair. It's like comparing 'vaporator mushrooms to gilley weed. Not to mention inflation; it only cost me 3 dollars to see the first Star Wars.
8 movies BARELY beat 6 (or 7 if you count clone wars)
no comment about the fact that there are EIGHT HP movies compared to SIX SW movies(3 of which came out in the 70s). Methinks this really isn't a fair comparision
And that will all likely change when the Star Wars movies are rereleased in Theaters in 3D starting in 2013.
yup hp has more movies in the franchise and its barely now passing star wars. fail cnn, just..fail..
I have to side with Star Wars. They are both really good but they are targeted at 2 different fan bases and I like Star Wars better.
Whats up with the brown nuggets at the bottom of the cup?
HP needed 8 films to top SW 6 films. Also those number are not adjusted for current ticket prices
HARRY POTTER DESERVES IT OVER THAT FILTH THAT IS KNOWN AS STAR WARTS
