Betty White can't attend Marine Corps ball

Sorry Sgt. Ray Lewis - Betty White can't accept your invitation to the Marine Corps ball!

Although Lewis' fellow Marines had luck using YouTube to land Marine Corps ball dates with celebrities, it didn't work out this time.

“I am deeply flattered and truly appreciate the invitation, as everyone knows I love a man in uniform," White says in a statement. "But unfortunately I cannot accept, as I will be taping an episode of 'Hot In Cleveland.' Love, Betty White.”

Lewis - like Sgt. Scott Moore and Cpl. Kelsey de Santis before him, who successfully asked out Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, respectively - got plenty of attention with his video invite.

The Marine (who cranks out a few sit-ups beforehand) introduces himself and says, "I figured since we have one Marine asking Mila Kunis out to the Marine Corps Ball, and we have another Marine asking out Justin Timberlake to the Marine Corps Ball, I figured, hey why not?...I would like to take Betty White."

The 89-year-old actress is Lewis' dream date because "she's funny, she's sweet, she's mature. She's the all-around perfect woman."

Holding a red rose, Lewis says he thinks he can offer White a good time. "I think I could make her laugh, I think she could make me laugh, I think we could laugh together."

Unfortunately, it looks like Lewis will now have to turn to someone else for his jokes.

betty white turn down the invitation coz she is not promoting any movies. this is just a promotional stunt by timberlake and that kunis girl. so next time you want to ask some famous actors or actress on a date, wait till they have a movie coming out.

@Joe YES...my problem is when they are not at "war" they are here in the bars and clubs acting a nut and as soon as they leave the wives are in the clubs doing god knows what. My thing is they do get paid so its not like they are volunteering and they signed up for it. Hello so earn your keep. I have a friend that think they are god and me I just look at them like anyone else. My grandpa who was a buffalo soldier fought for my freedom and those his age.

Marines are the biggest posers in the land. They rarely do anything unless it gets them in the spotlight or gives them publicity. They are the celebrity wannabes of the military. You have seen young whites dressing up like rappers. These are posers. That is what marines are to the military.

I fail to see how being Patrotic, respecting the military have to do with someone having to go on a date with a complete stranger. Everyone stop hating on betty. She is allowed to say no. Ever think she just doesnt feel comfortable meeting up with a strange man. No one knows anything about these people. My advice to mila is bring a body guard. People do not have to say yes to every single request a soldiers asks of them, nor should they.

I fail to see the connection between patriotism, respecting the military and people having to go on a date with a stranger. The two are and should be unrelated. Most people dont want to meet up with a complete stranger. So, don't be surprised when people start responding no.

See, this is exactly what I knew was going to happen. Kunis should have never accepted that first 'invitation.' It's now snowballing into ridiculous copycat invitations and bringing the wrong kind of attention to the ball. It's supposed to be about the Corps, not about how many celebrities can show up. If Kunis and Timberlake had any class, they should back out.

The military is just for loosers that cant get into college or do any better. If they could do better they would not join the marines. Once they join the military brags to them how special they are to help build up their self esteem. They are just the dregs that would end up in prison or collecting garbage if they didnt join up.

For GOSH sakes. WRITE it INTO the script. Elka drops a dollar in a service raffle. Totally unaware what she's entered or that she's won a totally unexpected Marine shows up at her door. The girls triple team her and get her ready while talking her into it. Max shows up and challenges the Marine to a duel. Then Cleveland can tape the actual ball. Punchline, back on the front porch Elka tries to make a move on the marine. Max shows up with a cannon.

I really expected Betty to say yes, I'm kind of disappointed. I am so very proud of our military and the hard work they do everyday. Anyone who is disrespectful to any member of the service should leave the U.S. to find out what it feels like to not have the freedom we do because of them. Anyone who bags on the military is certainly not "man" enough to serve and seems much more equipt to sit on the computer all day bagging on others.

I don't really have any problem with people serving in the military, I just have issues with what I percieve to be excessive pampering of the military these days. While ANY war ir dangerous, let's be frank here: Iraq and Afghanistan aren't exactly being fought by equal enemies. The world's only superpower vs. rag tag 3rd world rag heads hardly qualifies as "bravery". This isn't WWII or even Vietnam. My main point actually is just because someone is a Marine does NOT make them worthy of praise or a good, honorable person. They DO get paid you know, and have some of hte best benefits around. Can you name ONE guaranteed job that pays more right out of high school? On a personal level though, my opinion of Marines have been marred by one "Marine" reservists whom I know, who is probably one of the laziest, whiniest, most obnoxious person I've ever known. He has avoided arrest like THREE times for beating his ex wife, his mother, and his current wife simply because he played the "I'm a Marine" card to the cops, and you know how cops can be with service people. I'm talking women with bruised, bloodied faces here. This is just one of the deplorable things he does on a daily basis, trust me there is much much more. But all I have to say to those that do listen is: don't assume someone is a great person based on thier jobs alone, there is a lot more to everyone that meets the eye.

Thanks for reading, hope I didn't offend. In defense ot his Marine in the video though, at least he did it with humor and some levity unlike the first two did.

It got out of hand when a Marine asked Oprah to the ball via Youtube at the end of last week. I think she will probably say, "no" too. I mean the only reason Mila said, "Yes" is b/c Justin pushed her to (obviously for publicity for their film) and the only reason Justin said, "Yes" was because he "backed [himself] into a corner" esp since they have a movie (a great one that would need no publicity if their stars were as big as they'll be Saturday morning) coming out Friday. Oprah is in love with Stedman. Plus Oprah needs ABSOLUTELY NO publicity because she is Oprah the woman known by one vowel, "O". Here's the video of the Marine asking Oprah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw1aVHlFLbQ

AF wife's take – We don't attend the annual ball though I have friends who enjoy it. While it all seemed a bit cute with the first invitation, I can see how these events could end up unpleasant with the celebrity thing. When a celebrity is brought on base, everything gets turned on its ear. The "higher ups" all start preening obnoxiously and very little gets done. My guess is that with the exception of the military dates and the top brass at these balls, it's going to be pretty lame for the rest of the attendees with the focus on looking good for the media rather than having fun.

This is getting ridiculous. Are marines that hard up for dates? Seriously. They certainly deserve our respect and admiration for what they give to this country, but that shouldn't afford them carte blanche to harass Hollywood movie stars. Yes, I said "harass." Do you really think Justin Timberlake or Mila Kunis really want to go to some stupid marine ball. Of course, not. And why should they? Yet, could you imagine the media backlash if they said no? I think these marines are taking advantage of their positions and online media to score dates that they don't deserve. And I guess I'm blaming the media, too, for making a story out of this. What a waste of time.

If they decided to go against their orders and fail to show the recieve consequences. U have every right to be an idiot and release your thin though to every one. But leave the service members out of it. Blame the goverment or politicians or whoever. But the service members are doing there job they swore to do. Give them applause for getting their legs blown off or killed or just for going. You don't have the American heart to do it. Marines are mostly stupid. They show it by their actions. Blindly killing others because someone in an authority position told you to is dumb. If you really believe you were protecting our rights while you were over there killing people it shows how brainwashed you really are. The military even admits this. The want young impressionable kids with a slightly lower than normal IQ so they can turn them into killing machines. They also seek out kids with low self esteem and poorer economic backgrounds. This is just a fact. If you dont believe me ask an honest military recruiter, if you can find one.

Brickell – Thank God someone else gets it! What's even worse is that these elitists are funding both sides of the war, (a trick as old as war itself), so no matter who loses they always end up winning and stuffing their pockets and then funding the same media that propagandizes the public into supporting this lunacy. I highly doubt that any real citizens of this planet Earth really want to fight and kill each other without extreme brain-washing going on, it's our so-called 'leaders' that we blindly look up to and follow that are on the payroll of these elitists that lead our kids to war and death like a pied-piper. If it wasn't for these war pigs and their crimes we could all live peaceably on this planet, but greed and ignorance take precedence over the lives of fellow human beings in the sick and twisted minds of these 'leaders'. And then the morons like several of the people posting here follow them just because some talking heads in an idiot box told them to. Let our leaders fight each other if they're so keen on it, the rest of us want to live in peace. We should take all the government officials and rich elitists who support war and put them on an island for a deathmatch with each other Battle Royale-style = Problem Solved.

From then on, though, it becomes foolish. As Jeremy pointed out above, the Ball is about celebrating the Marines, not turning it into a circus. I only hope that any of the actors and actresses that attend at least do some research into the history and traditions of the Corp.

It's just tough for the average American to respect military personnel because those who enter the armed forces are mostly students who struggled academically in high school. Even the academic requirements to enter West Point, the Harvard of all military schools, isn't very high compared to a top-30 university in the nation.

I check out the CNN Web site every day to see how "the opposition" is thinking. Comments consist mostly of people insulting one another, while doing very little to critique the garbage that passes as "journalism" in most articles. So a marine asks Betty White to a ball; is that ANY reason to trash the USMC? A seemingly innocuous article merely serves as a forum for more hate toward each other – and this country. How pathetic! The Internet – and electronic medium in general – has the potential for facilitating intelligent discussion; instead, it serves to illustrate the negative impact declining education standards have had on our population. That's why so many people have fallen for the empty promises of Democrats (and a few RINOs) – it's time for a big change people. THINK! Open your eyes and look at the mess you've created. The rest of us are banding together to make sure the vote is out next year to get REAL Americans in office.

I could wish for a world without need for a military, but that's just wishing. Conservatives are not the only people who support the troops, and by the way, Democrats and RINOs are not the only problem in DC. This article is about a young Marine asking a lady for a date. This is not the place for your personal political rant.

The reason I disagree, having been a Marine myself, is they're trying to make the Ball all about THEM. The Birthday Ball is about the camaraderie and esprit de corps of the Marines. A time for oldest to youngest, PFC to Generals to celebrate their shared pride in a PRIVATE ceremony for Marines and close family/friends. It is NOT a stage to grandstand and pose for paparazzi. It is NOT an event to try and out-do your fellow Marine.

Gee you guys must not know many people in the Marines then. I for one think it is great that they are finding ways to reach out to people they admire. So, what if the only reason they are able to go with these stars is because they are Marines. I believe that they should be in the same catagory as other celebrities as should any branch of the military because they do a hell of a lot more for our country than most Hollywood celebrities do. There are USMC balls all over the place. Our armed forces don't get an opinion, they follow orders whether they agree or disagree with wars. Right or wrong they were the ones willing to sign up for the military & do the job most weren't willing to do. You don't have to agree with war to have respect for our Marines & other Armed Forces.

The majority of our armed forces either didn't have any other prospects or needed college money. Oh and you know what you get to do most of the time you're in active duty? It's funny that you people who are supporting war and war-mongerers and war-pawns are the same people who are trying to pass yourselves off as 'forward-thinking'. You want to talk about antiquated notions? WAR is an antiquated notion, especially non-defensive wars, especially propaganda-driven wars, especially when you try to hide behind the idea that us taking offensives in other foreign countries somehow 'guarantees our freedoms'. The military was set-up as a means to defend our own shores and that was the sole purpose behind it except in extreme situations (defensive or retaliatory, not offensive) where Congress OK's the use of the military abroad, not for the President to decide without Congress' authorization to wage an endless propagandized and so-called "War on Terror" with no real set enemy or end objective. This is abuse of American principles and pure idiocy, anyone who begs to differ clearly does not understand what the purpose of America is/was.

How can anyone, a mother, so blindly sacrifice her children for a rich man's war is beyond me! But thankfully, a lot of people lack the capacity to think and they follow the imaginary rank right into the land mine. All because some propaganda filled their head. But hey, a lot of us are wealthier because they died. So thank you, thank you for sacrificing your children. May God protect them, because you sure didn't.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself. As a former service member, nothing makes me more angry than ignorant people who don't understand how the military works or how critically important our military is our survival as a free nation. Without men and women in our military risking their lives every day, there is no way we would have the freedom and opportunities we all enjoy today. Furthermore, in the military rank is actually earned. No one in the military wakes up a commanding officer. Everyone up to the highest ranking general has worked their way there. And the most important thing to everyone in the military? Their fellow service members. We watch out for each other and make sure no one is taken advantage or abused. No one blindly follows. It might be news to you, but everyone in the military is given enormous opportunity to excel into leadership positions and get higher education. For free. I have my bachelor's degree and master's degree courtesy of the U.S. military. I'm proud of my country and what it meant to serve, even if that means protecting the freedom of speech of ignorant, ungrateful individuals like you. And – news flash – NO ONE likes war or wants to go to war. Believe it or not, our military is seeking peace around the world NOT further bloodshed. While we are a peace seeking nation, others out there seek to do us harm. We have a military to ensure those who intend to do us harm don’t get the chance to act on it. Again, if you knew anything about the military you would understand that. Please do us all a favor and don't have children. People who think like you scare me to death.

WOW so the Marines were the only ones their I guess lol..Not the 101st who first landed on ground their or the Rangers (ARMY) or the 4, 400,000 other army forces that were fighting in wwII. NOOO only Marines LOL. Do your studies..The Army ruled WWII everyone else was back up..The Marines were noted as the "infantry of the navy" during those times.. Marines are waaay to glorified in everything they do for giving the exact same thing that all others from every branch of the military has given..you guys need to get over yourselves seriously. If it wasn't for everyone coming together and fighting their a55es off and Hitler making mistakes we would have lost the war..Remember that..

Uh, the army kicked butt in Europe, but the Marines took the Pacific island by island. Maybe we wouldn't have lost, but it would've been a lot longer.

...of course.... none might recall that the Germans had placed a massive network of underwater obstacles to prevent WWII "Mike" boats from getting inland from sea in order to land the Army/Marines. Those obstacles were cleared by ... yes, you can imagine, US Navy swimmers. Under cover of dark and working real hard to set charges to clear well defined paths through the surf, not a single craft was caught in the German array.

The USMC had 6 combat divisions in the Pacific Theater, and not all 6 saw combat. The US Army had 14 combat divisions there. The USMC was vital due to their expertise in amphibious assaults, but when it is all said and done... we all work for the same guy. None of the combat troops would have done anything without the US Navy to get them their and the US Army Air Force softened up the islands prior to the landings with bombing. Joint Operations.

The US Navy has provided much more than mere transportation.

Jeremy...you do not have to explain yourself to some low-life who doesn't have a clue as to what it means to be a Marine! You are one of The Few, The Proud, A Marine. You have accomplished what so few other people could ever say. I tell my children all of the time to look around them and respect our military members, including their daddy. They are witnessing history every day that they encounter a Marine because there are so few of you in the world compared to the population. Anyone can be someone, but it takes a special breed to become a Marine. My husband retires soon and I will miss the wonderful life that the Marine Corps has given us. Enjoy your time in and keep your head held high. My husband is one of the smartest people that I know, and to civilians he may just be a grease-monkey in Motor T, but to me and my children he is just awe-inspiring. He could have been an officer, but chose enlisted. A truly gifted man with so much that he could have done (gone to Art School, become a computer engineer, etc) but chose to serve in our beloved Corps. You also took that initiative. Semper Fi!!!!!!
