Before I get to Thursday night's eliminations on "So You Think You Can Dance," I have to talk about all the news that Nigel Lythgoe and company had for us.
First and foremost, it was devastating to hear that Alex Wong has injured himself once again. Still keeping my fingers crossed that he will be a part of season 9!
Then, it was finally time to reveal this year's all-stars. I thought it would either be the same as last year's, or a brand new batch of them, and it turned out to be a little of both.
Aside from returning all-stars tWitch, Kathryn, Pasha, Comfort and Allison, it's great to see new all-stars Chelsie (the busiest dancer on TV?), Brandon, Robert from last season, and season 1's Melody. Can't wait to see them again!
Meanwhile, there were the special performances last night. It was great to see Melinda back again with a tap-dancing troupe, while future "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger was, um, also there.
As for the dancers in the bottom three, I was somewhat surprised to see Caitlynn and Mitchell there, but then again their hip-hop routine really didn't cut it. Unfortunately their jazz routine didn't help their cause.
But can I just say that Ricky's solo was one of the most amazing ones in the show's history? It took several weeks, but I'm finally sold on him.
Unfortunately, it wasn't terribly surprising to see Ryan and Alexander go home this week. Ryan looked positively crushed through the entire episode, with a sinking suspicion about what was coming. She didn't deserve to go home this early, but the votes just weren't there for her.
As for Alexander, he finally showed his personality this week, but it was too little too late.
On to next week, with Neil Patrick - wait for it - Harris as guest judge! And the top 10! And the all-stars! My colleague Rachel Rodriguez will be filling in for me, chronicling it all.
What did you think? Was it Ryan's time to go? Do you like the choices for all-stars? Share your view on iReport or comment below.
What I don't dig is the guest judges. They add nothing but awkward ramblings. I'm glad Ryan went home too. I was just never amazed with anything she did. I haven't seen the last 2 shows yet. I am curious to hear what Nigel say that was so horrible.
Time for new choreography for sure! The performances seem to be lackluster this season with just a few exceptions – and not because of lack of talent on the part of the dancers – but due to lack of interesting choreography! It would be great if they infused some new life into the show with different choreographers. Even Sonya, Travis, and NappyTabs seems to be running out of fresh ideas. I would love to see Wade Robson again – every peice he put on the show was memorable and unique. Or how about other show alumni – Travis can't be the only one who can choreograph a great piece!
Ryan has the technique and the skills. I couldn't see passion and joy in her dancing. Her pasted on smiles at the beginning are what my daughter learned as a 6 yr old tapper, but grew to understand how to feel the music in ballet and other styles. Ryan just left me cold compared to the other female dancers.
I thought Ryan was overrated from the beginning and I'm not surprised that she was voted off. I just want to say that I miss Mia Michaels! Her choreography eclipses anyone else. We're also not seeing enough of Tyce. I know they need a musical performance on Thursdays, but can't they do better than the ones they've been getting?
I think the dislike of Ryan on these boards is interesting. Far from being a "privileged pet" of Mia Michaels, I read that she nearly could not continue in dance because of her mom's financial situation, and working as an assistant to Mia saved her dancing. She's a 19 year-old kid who loves dance and is working hard to try to realize her dreams. Are people envious if she's gotten some breaks on t.v. or with Mia? I found her smiling to be a disconnect in her early dances, but felt she got that under control as she went on. I, too, felt Nigel turned on her when the voters didn't connect with her. It was too bad for her that she and Ricky got cha cha and broadway for their last dances. I didn't think she and Ricky had chemistry. I would have liked to see her stay one more week at least to see how she did with an all star. I think she and someone tall, like Robert, might have been a better pair. I hope she continues to realize her dreams.
Ryan just needed the exposure to continue her acting career. Mia must have negotiated and got her that. Time to move on, kiddo. I am, however, getting a little tired of the judges / choreographers lovefest. It feels like 25% of the time allotted to critiquing the dancers is given over to praise for the choreographers. I'm guessing the fans do not tune in to watch the professionals slobber all over each other. Of course they are good. They wouldn't be on SYTYCD if they weren't. Movin' on...
I was so so happy to see Ryan go!!! She has been way overrated this whole season. She is nothing but a little pet of Mia Michaels. And came across as a stuck up snob in all of her vignettes.
@Happytam..lol. You do know you don't get a price :) .
I have not been impressed with the choreography this season. It is so obvious that anything that Travis and Sonia put on the floor is hailed as "the greatest". So if you are lucky to have either of them as your choreographers you can guarantee that the judges will give you their highest approval. NOT FAIR AT ALL!!! This show seems to be mostly about luck of the draw–choreographer and dance style. The negative criticisms almost always deal with poor choreography and not poor dance ability. I have many ideas about revising the entire format of the show–please contact me.
I agree with you, Richard. The choreography has been especially weak this season–with Sonya and Travis's work being the exceptions. Then the dancers are criticized for poor dancing when the real problem is the poor choreography. Often the choreography makes no sense, does not tell a story and has no ending. For example, the piece about the boy soldiers (or abductees as Nigel called them) was poorly choreographed, but the dancers were criticized for not doing more with it. What in blazes could they have done with such a confusing blueprint to follow?
I am so happy that Clarice will not have to dance with her tiny partner. He's very good–but, way too short for those long beautiful dance legs. Clarice's technical ability will continue to shine. Her extension, flexibility, and beautiful control are second to none. Mark my words – she's the one to watch!!!
I am thoroughly disgusted with Nigel Lythgoe's vicious comments last night on SYTYCD. Ryan was crushed because Nigel crushed her. Perhaps it was her time to leave, but he went out of his way to smack her like a bug. I hope you are reading this, Nigel. What has gotten into you? Why have you become so obnoxious? Because you think it makes good television? You knew that Ryan was leaving and yet you beat her up anyway, just to make sure she never danced again and to wring all joy out of her performing. You also know she will not be back because she has reached the age limit of the show. Now you've made sure. Shame on you! I've noticed over the past few weeks that you have become more aggressive and angry at the dancers. You've already destroyed American Idol for me by allowing each teenybopper to vote 50 times. Of course, they ignore you and now vote thousands of times for their talentless cute boys. Now you've destroyed SYTYCD for me. I feel nothing but anger and bitterness about what you've done. This isn't show biz. This is cruelty. Time to change the channel.
Roscoe: I agree with you! It was not necessary for Nigel to atempt to destroy Ryan's spirit. She was truly a lady at all times. Why kick a person when she's down? I was not a huge fan of Ryan–but, I would never think to say such harsh things to her or about her. She is a very good dancer who did not deserve to be treated like a talentless dancer. Nigel is always nicer to the males on the show. WHY?
1) Ryan has NOT reached the age limit of the show – she's not even close! The limit is 30. She's 19.
2) She won't return because she can't (unless she was to be invited as an all star). Once you make the top 20 you can't audition again.
3) There are systems in place to limit votes. Each number can only be used 50 times. Any after that do not count. There are quite a few programs that run that way.
I suppose the teenboppers who vote will be very surprised when it comes time for them to vote for politicians. You can only vote once! OMG!
what did he say?
goodness, that lady on the right is not wearing a blouse
I completely agreed with the results. Nicole was pretty much a waste of time. However I was happy to hear of Cat's sucess and her modesty is very becoming of her. I hope she wins, she is a very earnst person which si hard to find in hosts (lookin at you Seacrest). Glad to see both Louis and Chelsie back to their roots. All we need now is Dmitri and Lacey back and we have a DWTS/SYTYCD mashup!
Gotta disagree about Lacey. Never liked her at all. I find her to be very arrogant and unlikable. She should never come back. I was very disappointed when she found her way to Dancing With The Stars.
I do agree about Cat and Louis. She is well deserved of an Emmy nomination. I would love to see her win. Louis is a wonderful choreographer. His routines are very intricate and detailed and smooth at the same time. I don't know if I like him better as a choreographer on SYTYCD or as a dancer on DWTS. Either way, it's great to see him as part of a successful program.
I am SO glad Ryan went home. She was waaaaay overrated. Those remaining are simply fab and it is going to be really difficult to keep making cuts. I am happy with this final 10 bunch.
OMG! First! I finally did it!
