As promised, Pia Toscano's single "This Time" has arrived.
It's the former "Idol" contestant's first single from an upcoming album that's expected to drop later this year, now that she's signed with "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine's Interscope.
The track, which Toscano performed last week on the "American Idol Live" tour, premiered on Ryan Seacrest's radio show yesterday, and it's all about a woman who's decided that this time will be the last time for a no-good lover.
"This time I'm gonna do it my way/This time I'm finding out the hard way/This time I'm going back to the girl I was when you found me," she sings on the hook. The song was written by Ester Dean, who's penned hits like Rihanna's "S&M" and "Rude Boy."
Billboard notes that "lyrically, Toscano finds her strength - from what sounds to be an emotionally or even physically abusive relationship - on the midtempo pop ballad," while Entertainment Weekly is calling it the "kind of song we expect to hear Rachel Berry singing the next time Finn screws up: Sad, relatable, and a touch awe-inspiring."
The Wrap adds that while "Toscano sings the hell" out of the song, it's nonetheless "a compendium of comeback cliches," and may not be the song to track her potential success with.
