Growing up in the 1970s, actor and comedian Cedric the Entertainer knew he always wanted to be a game show host.
"That was the golden age of game shows. I grew up watching 'Match Game' and 'Let's Make a Deal,' and I always wanted to be a host or panelist on one of those shows."
Now he's getting the chance: Cedric has been tapped to host "It's Worth What?", a new NBC game show scheduled to premiere on July 19.
On the show, teams of two determine the prices of unusual items for a chance to win one million dollars. It sounds a little like "The Price is Right," but Cedric says "It's Worth What?" focuses on collectibles and antiques.
"The items in play are the hidden gems that we hope to find when we clean out Grandma's attic," Cedric notes. "We mix that in with modern items, like sports cars. It piques our curiosity of cost and value."
Cedric, who also serves as one of the executive producers of the show, says you should expect the unexpected when it comes to the collectibles that appear on stage. An Elvis Presley jumpsuit, a dress worn by Princess Diana and a live tiger will all appear on stage this season.
"Yes, we brought out a tiger. However, he was in a cage and was kind."
One element of the game has contestants guessing how much someone paid for a celebrity collectible at auction. Among the items featured: John Lennon's toilet and William Shatner's kidney stone.
"We had $50 million in merchandise in the back of the studio when we taped," Cedric says. "I don't get the answers ahead of time, so I'm usually finding out the right price at the same time as the contestants. It feels like I'm playing with the contestants, and that's fun."
So has "It's Worth What?" made Cedric interested in antiques?
"Before I can do my own yard sale, my cousins show up and take my stuff," he jokes. "If I have anything of value, my relatives probably have it."
