Ron Howard: My daughter is a great director

Ron Howard says fans shouldn't be surprised that his actress daughter Bryce Dallas Howard can direct films.

"She's already directed some," Howard said. "She made a great little short a few years ago and also [directed] plays all through college. This is something she hasn't been very outspoken about pursuing, but she is great with stories, she works wonderfully with writers and is developing projects through her own company, Nine Muses."

The father-daughter team have joined forces with Canon U.S.A. for “Project Imagin8ion,”  a photo contest in which the winning eight entrants will serve as the foundation for a short film to be directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, an actress who has appeared in several films including "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

Photographers can submit photos at the contest's YouTube channel through June 14. The shots must be based on a series of movie themes: character, goal, mood, obstacle, relationship, setting, time and the unknown. A film will then be shot based on the winning entries.

"It struck me as a really creative exercise," he said. "A couple of decades ago I began to use still photographs in thinking about scenes to try and prod my own imagination and push it towards a more visual approach to scenes and stories because having grown up as an actor, my instinct is to always think first of the performance."

The Academy Award winning director said finding stories "that feel original and yet still allow audiences to connect and feel entertained" is the biggest challenge he sees facing today's directors.

Technology is helping to increase that ability to tell a good story, he said.

"I think people are discovering their creativity all of the time and the Internet has facilitated and accelerated that," Howard said.

Howard said he looks forward to mentoring his daughter in directing though "her aesthetic is a little different from mine." His little girl has some serious behind the camera talent that most fans are unaware of, he said.

"She found a project that we made at Imagine [Entertainment, a production company  which Howard co-chairs with Brian Grazer] and she;s one of the producers on 'Restless' that Gus Van Sant directed," the proud father said.  "She's been working behind the scenes for the last three or four years and is developing features to direct."

And films may not be all his daughter is working on Howard said.

"Bryce was pregnant when she directed her last film," Howard said, laughing. "That's what she does. So far her pattern is act in movies, work on scripts, do all the publicity, get pregnant and then become a director."

Wow, what a blast from the past. Being an avid Andy fan (yes, I've even attended Mayberry Days in Andy Griffith's hotmeown of Mount Airy, North Carolina) it's great to see Ron and Andy in those roles again. Wonder what it feels like to them, having played so many other roles in between. Thanks for linking that!

I personally find ron howard to be a superb director. I would not mind seeing what his daughter has to offer in that aspect. She has shown talent in front of the camera, and may do well behind it. As to her looks, she is a lovely lady, but the color of her eyes creeps me out. Not just her, but that eye color on anyone. No idea why, though. Strange...

I always wanted him to follow in his dads footsteps and be either a sheriff or run a hardware store. He was a good sport when he kept Cunningham Hardware open and missed the rock and roll concert when his dad was sick.

You're forgetting Ron's own dad is Rance Howard, who is also a distinguished actor. Those of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s will be very familiar.
