It's official: I love this season!
The talent we've seen so far on "So You Think You Can Dance" has been stronger and more unique than I can ever remember seeing in the show's history. Thursday night's Los Angeles auditions were no exception.
It all kicked off with Jordan Casanova, and I think Nigel Lythgoe said it all when he said it would be difficult to critique her routine without sounding like a dirty old man. You might remember that last year's winner Lauren auditioned with a similarly scorching routine, so we'll see if Jordan has the same level of versatility at the Las Vegas callbacks.
Then there was expectant father "D.C." Chapman, who had one of the most original routines ever put to a Frank Sinatra song. Here's another guy who will certainly be able to get votes (and here's hoping his girlfriend won't go into labor during one of the live shows, assuming he gets that far).
The best routine of the night, I thought, was from Arielle Coker. She has grown in leaps and bounds since we first saw her auditioning with Phillip Chbeeb. I'm really hoping that the fourth time is the charm for her.
But seriously, let's hear it for the female popper/lockers! Japanese export Hero McRae and Berkeley graduate/style consultant Patty Anne Miller pulled off some otherworldly moves. At least one of these two has to make it to the top 20.
There were lots of familiar faces from seasons past in the audience at these auditions (hello, most of our favorites from season four!), but season five winner Jeanie Mason (sitting next to season four winner, Joshua Allen) was there for a special reason, cheering on her sister Alexis. She got through to Vegas, but I have a feeling that this is not her year just yet. She has a little more work to do.
Lastly, we saw an extraordinary routine from sisters Sasha and Natalia Mallory, but I saw that Natalia seemed to be struggling in the choreography round. Both were sent to Vegas, but I can see it coming down between the two of them to see which one gets to the top 20, one week from now (and I think that will be Sasha). Then there was that promo for next week...
Speaking of next week, bring on Vegas! Are you as excited as I am by the talent this season? How will they ever narrow down 160 dancers to 20? Post your hopes for who will make it on iReport or in the comments below.
