Jane's Addiction immortalized on Guitar Center RockWalkWith a battery of photographers snapping pictures, the three members of Jane's Addiction pressed both hands into wet cement as part of their induction into Guitar Center RockWalk in West Hollywood, California. Later, guitarist Dave Navarro remarked to CNN, "I first became aware of hands in cement on 'I Love Lucy,' if you remember that episode where they steal John Wayne's footprints." Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello introduced the iconic rock band in a Wednesday ceremony, revealing that he used to sneak into Jane's rehearsals in 1986, "sitting on some nasty carpet in the corner with wide-eyed wonder." Although many people say Nirvana was the first alternative group to break out of the hair metal '80s, Morello begs to differ. "That's just not true. It was Jane's Addiction," he stated, as a handful of people in the crowd nodded in agreement. Of course, it seems their personal lives have always generated as many headlines as their music. Sex, drugs, break-ups and make-ups...it's all part of their dramatic 25-year history. Frontman Perry Farrell explains it like this: "We're a little bit crazy, so even though we wanted to be this great group, we still couldn't help our emotions and our feelings. And we would punch each other, and we would get into these terrible fights - 'I'm going to kick your ass' and everything else - but in the end, I think we've matured to the point where we really appreciate each other." Jane's Addiction is currently in the studio, working on "The Great Escape Artist," their first album in eight years. They released their last record, "Strays," in 2003 - promptly breaking up one year later. It might have been their third break-up – but even the band members aren’t quite sure how many times they’ve split. Drummer Stephen Perkins says the new disc should be finished next month. "Hopefully by the Fourth of July," he speculates. "We'll get it out in September - unless we break up again, and wait another decade!" |
