James McAvoy: Brit filmmakers dumb down movies for AmericansThe American-made superhero flick "X-Men: First Class" may seem an unusual choice for Scottish star James McAvoy, who earned critical raves for British dramas like "The Last King of Scotland" and "Atonement"—but then again, the actor says U.K. movies just aren't what they used to be. "We make loads of movies to try and hit in America, and yet it's never the ones aimed at America that do well. We dumb our movies down because we want Americans to understand them," the BAFTA winner tells SkyNews. "Then Americans watch it and go, 'This is a really unsophisticated, dumbed-down movie. Why would we buy this? Why do we like this? We don't.' It's like we're patronizing them and short-changing ourselves," he says.
McAvoy's "X-Men" co-star Kevin Bacon advises filmmakers to continue to play it smart on screen. "I think the whole thing is to keep trying to make the best possible movie that you can, and hopefully the cream rises to the top," he says. "And sometimes, you know, you look at something like 'The King's Speech'—which is made for relatively little money compared to 'X-Men'—and it just keeps making money, making money, making money." "X-Men: First Class" arrives in theaters June 3.

Why are people surprised/angry about this? It is agreed upon common knowledge that americans are lacking in intellect. Instead of focusing on the man stating the fact why dont we try to tackle the reason it became a fact.

I appreciate this bold and honest statement from J. McAwoy because it's true. Most British films today are not like they used to be but hopefully some British producers pay attention to what he said.

In this article people read a headline and assume the worst. the article is about how the movies made by british filmmakers for americans by dumbing it down actually makes the movie do poorly and the actor is criticizing the filmmakers not the american public.

How ironic this article is. I dunno what it says about the intelligence of the Americans or British, but this story seems to have proven that not many CNN bloggers actually read the stories before they make posts about them.
He wasn't trashing Americans. He was saying that the British film industry thinks they have to dumb down films for Americans, but that Americans are actually way too smart to buy it.
There are some British films that are really very good, and then others that are just amateurish and cheesy, which really speaks more about the Brits sense of humor and intelligence level than ours. I don't think that's a dumbing down for Americans. I just think they have a weird sense of humor.

True, some Americans are some of the smartest people in the world. The problem is that about 30 to 50% of Americans are probably some of the dumbest people in the world, and the media gets dumbed down for those morons. After all, smart people can understand limited intellects. But the people with limited intellects can't understand intelligence. For example "Inception" was really not that complicated but a lot of Americans found it overly confusing. Anyway, cheers to the smart people of the world, and may the idiots all be saved in the rapture if that involves their sudden disappearance.
Britain's population is 20% that of the US while it's GDP is only 15% of the US. So despite our simplicity, we Americans are doing pretty well.
Such is simple baloney. Film makers and screen writers are getting dumber. So are the entertainers. I haven't been to many screenplays in years because it is difficult to find a movie without blood, guts, fire, car chases and fart jokes. I sort of dare major studios whether in Britian the U.S. to make cerebral films. Who cares if the high school dropout doesn't understand it? If you pander to the masses you will one day start scratching your head like INBEV-Anheuser Busch and realizing that the craft brewers are kicking you butts in growth, or like Detroit wondering where Toyota, Nissan and Honda came from during the 80s. Hollywood you are the next Detroit.

There is some truth in the statement. A significant portion of the US population can barely follow reality television programing. How can they be expected to understand UK films? I am so grateful that I have access to BBC America and PBS.
Some individuals (americans or not) when they read something and they do not fully comprehend it start to name-calling, I guess (for the sake of our country)is just very young people or super dumb ones. and this is the reason why british (and other countries) have to dumb down films, books, interviews, even comedies!

I am embarrassed to be an American at times, especially being from the deep south. This country isn't as grand as it used to be and it is only a matter of time before it collapses from such a weak infrastructure. Not only is America being dumbed down, it is becoming lazier. The country is growing without discipline and eventually it will have to deal with the consequences of the mistakes it's made.
Americans are dumb? The british are still looking down their nose at us and we have a democracy. They spend their moeny on the royal family who are living high off the hog with their money. Who's dumb? This country is run for the people by the people and bills have to be voted on if they are to pass. This guy wasn't giving a back-handed compliment. He just told the truth; movie companies think we're too stupid to enjoy serious dramas, so they "dumb them down" for American audiences. His point was actually the opposite of what some of you are thinking. He is saying that American audiences are not dumb, and that intelligent movies like "The King's Speech" can do well here.
What's funny, though, is that you guys who are so defensive and making these hateful remarks about Britain are proving the point you've wrongfully accused McAvoy of making.

Most of you who swallowed the media line on "dumbing down" movies have focussed more on the interpretation of what was said than what was actually said. I bet he never said Americans are dumb. Dumbing down a movie is about marketing to the distribution channels to get the movie shown in as many cinemas as possible, not a commentary on viewer intellect. Anyone who got down and dirty on this blog gets a C+ or D-.
With a population about 5x that of Great Britain, we're bound to have more dumb people than them. The movie makers there need to remember we were smart enough to seceded from their kingdom, win two wars against them and save their butts a few times.
I'm an American citizen but I was born overseas and I've lived in a developing country as well as Europe...so I think I can speak with some authority concerning this topic of Americans "being dumb".
I don't think Americans are any less intelligent than Brits or any other people. In Fact some of the most brilliant people I know are Americans. But the difference is that in America, they take free speech so seriously that it's not just a matter of the gov guaranteeing people the right to voice their opinions, but rather people being allowed to say just about whatever they want. As a result of this, intelligent discourse in America often gets contaminated by stupid comments and arguments b/c in large part, these people know no one will hold them accountable for their ridiculousness.
Americans aren't any less intelligent, it's just that stupid people have a voice in America, and unsurprisingly they say stupid things.

Every country has its geniuses, and every country has its 'village idiots'. As someone who has travelled around both America and the United Kingdom, I have to say America does make a fool of itself publically much more frequently than most other countries. Especially online; it was Americans who created 'IM speak', and it doesn't give other countries a good impression of us. True, the UK has its faults as well, however there's a reason why you don't often hear of them messing up.

I agree, most movies are targeted at the lower common denominator but there are some quite smart and compelling movies out there. But I have to think that McAvoy won't exactly endear himself to fans by making these remarks. Of course his target demographic will only care how he looks anyway.

It is true...ignorance is bliss. I rather like the X-Men movies, so it will be good to see this McAvoy act in this new movie. They should make a remake for the Marvel comic X-Force. It is a great addition to the X-Men story.

A backhanded compliment is when someone insults you in a way that you don't actually realize you've just been insulted. Did he deny his statement that Americans are dumb? No, he just said Brits who write movies for stupid Americans fail to make it big. He could have said, "Americans aren't stupid, and Brit director/producers need to learn this fact." Or perhaps, "Brit filmmakers dumb down movies for Americans, but this tactic fails, which leads to the conclusion that it is the British who are the idiots!"

Though I agree with you, I also believe that he was simply stating that Americans don't prefer films that are "dumbed down" for them. He was, in his own Scottish way, giving Americans somewhat of a compliment, stating "Then Americans watch it and go This is a really unsophisticated, dumbed-down movie." Sounds like a compliment to me...
