The holiday weekend is off to a good start for “The Hangover Part II" crew – the movie collected $31.7 million at the domestic box office on Thursday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
That total gives “Part II” the third best Thursday opening total of all time, THR reports, a title that comes on the heels of the movie having the highest midnight screening open for an R-rated film. "Hangover Part II's" midnight shows on May 26 brought in $10.4 million.
It’s not jaw-dropping in comparison to movies like “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” which, as the Los Angeles Times points out, pulled in more than $30 million from post-midnight showings, but it is strong for an R-rated movie. For example, the R-rated sequel “Sex and the City 2” earned only $3 million from midnight openings around this time last year.
All of this without a lot of critical support, with the major complaint being an obvious one: It’s more or less the same story. (Or blueprint, if you will.)
The New York Times suggests that "If you superimposed a diagram that mapped out all the narrative beats, characters and jokes in 'The Hangover Part II' over one for 'The Hangover,' the two would align almost perfectly. Banking on the studio adage that there’s no success like a previous box office hit, Mr. Phillips and company dutifully recycle the first movie to increasingly diminishing ends."
E! Online describes it as a “buzz-kill follow-up that suffers from a pervasive sense of been there, drunk that,” while Roger Ebert explains that if you’ve seen the first one, he doesn’t really have to describe the plot to you for “Part II.”
And that's not a wholly bad thing. “This is a raunch fest, yes, but not an offense against humanity,” Ebert, who gave the film two stars, says, adding that "the movie has its share of laughs.”
A lot of younger moviegoers are banking on it: According to THR, 54 percent of Thursday's audience was under 25. Taking its opening day gross into consideration, it looks like “Hangover Part II” is on track to earn between $110 and $125 million over the holiday weekend.
I just recently saw this movie, and I have to say, I was disappointed! It was so similar to the first one, but in a different location. I kept seeing things in different scenes that reminded me of the original. It wasn't one of my favorites!:-D
Terrible film, terrible acting, just awful. (Mind you the first one was just as bad) Was it meant to be funny? Because it wasn't! Downright waste of time watching.
its called an escape and i would much rather see a movie about an escape of reality than figure out why the government is spending my money as if it was thiers.....
Thanks for sharing the valuable piece of note ! ! ! HELPFUL ...
Let's see–The Hangover is the top movie, Book of Mormon is the top Broadway show, and Lady Gaga has the top CD. Yup, our entertainment culture is now officially in the sewer. The victory of obscenity and vulgarity is complete.
$31.7 million for a movie about dumba$$es...and people wonder why our country is headed down the tank.
Loved the first Hangover. Had high hopes for Part 2- I really liked it, but it doesn't match the beast that is Part 1. Can't wait for Part 3! I can't imagine a scenario for Alan's wedding!!!
I saw the movie with my friends on Thursday and we all laughed our butts off... Great comedy, and a great follow up to the first one... I am pretty tired of all these critics over analyzing movies like these – if you want to laugh, go see this movie, if you want to nit-pick a movie for its storylines, messages, etc, this is def. not for you.
yawn.........waste of time and money to think watching a group of guys getting drunk. Wow. What mentality.
The movie was GOOD. it was the same blue print so what??? STILL FUNNY AS HELL. IM GOING TO GO BACK N SEE IT AGAIN. THE CRITICS SUCK. DEFINETLY WORTH SEEING IT EVEN IF U HAVENT OR HAVE SEEN THE FIRST ONE!!!
Now I knew it followed the same blue print as the first and knew that there was going to be things that were going to show up that obviously were in the trailers, but I was still moved to tears at some points from laughing. A great hillArious movie and a good way to burn some time for a laugh and be entertained. I just don't know if it deserves a number 3.
As for someof you posters, if you don't have anything co structure to say, do t say it. I and obviously a lot of other people don't want to hear your crap. As for other people who shamelessly plug their music, wears, and services, find another outlet. People have no respect for you when you do this. It's annoying and there are better ways if getting the word out there.
Good movie Def worth watching. Not as good as the first one but they never are I still thought it was Great.
Everybody Who Commented With Criticism must Be A pecimist Its A Movie 8 Dollars And Its Funny i Watched The Original About 5 Times So What If The Story Was Similar The World Was In Love With The Lord Of The Rings 5 Hour trash Movie And They Made Three Of Those Garbage Movies If Yu Dont Like It GOOD For You shut Up And Keep Movin At The ticket Counters Dang!
Saw it last night and when I arrived home the HO1 was starting on HBO or some cable channel. I watched it and felt a sense of letdown. The second movie is actually better than the first. It is more mysterious. Bangkok is the unknown element. Even if you have never been to Vegas it is still the US. Thailand however is a different animal altogether. By going there they took off the limits of what was possible. Even if you have lived there (and I did for two years) there is still this element that there is no bottom to where you could end up... Go out to a bar, end up in some hotel with...who knows who...
What happen after "The HO" ? all in The Sensational book at www TheDimensionMachine DOT com
The first one suked, why would anyone go see this mess? And hangover 3 will be in Europe. Blah, blah, blah. -Art
Beter den d 1 on
I never saw part 1 of the hangover. So, watching part two was hilarious considering I had nothing to compare it to. The Hangover II is a MUST watch movie during this Memorial Weekend!
@ Countryboy: Dude, Like I posted earlier, what an annyoing way to promote your music! I would offer to manage you, but by the way you think your pimping your music it gives me the impression that you're A: desperate and B: your music must suck! WRONG WAY TO PROMOTE!
Man this movie was stupid funny! I wanna see it again! and for u cheap people have sum 1 take u on a date like i did! (if ur not 2 ugly lol) but again great movie! if u luv 2 laugh u will def. enjoy this sequel.....
So, did your date get any?
BTW AWESOME MOVIE
CRITICS SUCK. THIS MOVIE WAS.AWESOME YES IT FOLLOWED THE SAME BLUE PRINT HAVE YOU STUPID CRITICS EVER THOUGHT THAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO?????
People, I bring you, in full regalia, the predominant logic of the TYPICAL AMERICAN MOVIEGOER.
Don't expect better, just settle for more (see STAR WARS, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, THE MATRIX). You will buy anything.
Just goes to show you the sad state our country is in......if people really pay money to see this kind of movie...it is really sad.
It may be a sad state we are in, but us "sad people" are having fun AND loving it! Why don't you just go sit in the corner being sad???
Can i get 1 million? http://WWW.CDBABY.COM/ALL/NUMONE bye now!
Hollywood has been making the same movies over and over for years/decades. Who cares, make me laugh, show some action, a little T/A, and I will be there.
I can only assume this one was twice as boring as the first...which convicted rapist/felon did they glorify in this yawnfest btw?
Just because the second movie has the characters blacking out again doesn't mean it can't make you laugh. i'll see it eventually. might wait till it's at the dollar theater though. hate paying $10 to watch a movie once..
should the folks go that have seen the first one and liked it? yes or no?
yes.....its entertaining and worth the trip.....not the greatest movie of all time but still very
Moom jkoiu momma bye bye
I haven't seen the first one yet.
Funny movie. Don't hit the juice much but ny bachelor party wouldn't be much different but it'd be breakfast brunch and blunt before it went down.
Because you're the coolest, hippest mofo around.
EXACTLY..there has to be a hangover of some sort and then stuff happens...or it wouldn't be THE HANGOVER. They could have played more on some stuff that happened in the camera shots that weren't necessarily explained in the 1st movie. Like their shananigans from the 1st movie, caused more crap to happen after the wedding.
Ofcourse it needs the hang over and the blackout! thats the whole point of the story and i was already expecting that to happen... the rest is just funny s*** that happens along the way
Well, would it really be The Hangover II without the hangover and blackout part?
It's like complaining that Weekend at Bernie's II involved dragging the same dead guy around all movie long. What the hell else is it supposed to be about?????
Terrible sequel. Save ya cash.
Terrible Review...save people the read...
In your opinion, is it worth it to watch then? I was gonna pirate it.
Why make the same movie twice?? BECAUSE THE SHEEPLE WILL PAY TO SEE IT!! (dummies..)
Why comment on a movie you have no interest in seeing?? BECAUSE IT'S A CRY FOR ATTENTION FOR YOUR PATHETIC LIFE!! (loser..)
thanks marcus, that needed to be said.
The Hangover deserved to made twice. It was that funny! Now if they had a sequel to "The Beaver", I could see your point.
mellow out man, your posting-board roots are showing, "sheeple"? Where'd u learn that word dork?
Close third! =P haha
2nd ! LOL
Lame.....the first Hangover sucked.....why do all you cattle herd to see more Hollywood drivel?
