Seth MacFarlane to reboot the 'Flintstones'

Yabba-dabba... Giggity?

After announcing its new fall season, and teasing the new seasons of hits like "Glee," Fox had one more surprise up its sleeve at Monday's upfront presentation for advertisers.

Seth MacFarlane, creator of Fox animated series "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show," told attendees that he was working on another show for 2013: a re-imagining of the first-ever primetime animated sitcom, "The Flintstones."

“The very first cartoon character I drew at age two was Fred Flintstone,” said MacFarlane in a press release. “So it’s appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who’s too good for him.”

The network promised a "modern day" take on the stone age family, who celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

Deadline reports that this announcement followed "complicated negotiations" between 20th Century Fox TV and Warner Bros. Television (owned by Time Warner, which also owns CNN).

This new take on classic characters is sure to be one of the most talked-about series in the next couple of years, not unlike the 1994 live-action movie, which starred John Goodman.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to MacFarlane's version of "The Flintstones?" Let us know with an iReport or in the comments below.

i actually think they should bring back looney tunes and merie melodies the way they used to be back in the golden age, ya know, little 7 minute shorts that they showed in the cinema before a movie, and that the only person that could pull it off is seth macfarlane. The only thin that would need changed to make it modern would be the cultural references and the era brought up to date, but just keep the formula the sam, example, elmer hunts rabbit, rabbit plays tricks on elmer, hilarity ensues. The way that the jokes are done in familys cutaways remind me so much of looney tunes golden age humour, that to me seth could give these once great animations the return they desreve in the way that they used to be. so forget about the flintstones seth, do looney tunes instead dude!

What is the record for most concurrent shows belonging to one guy on TV at the same time? I foresee a day, a bit like the deal with all restaurants being Taco Bell's in Demolition Man, that all Fox shows will be Seth MacFarlane's. He'll even have cartoon characters doing Fox News. (That, by the way, is the only way it could POSSIBLY be more of a joke than it is now...)

I feel like all of you that are worried about this guy ruining The Flintstones must never have seen it to begin with. As a few others have pointed out it was not only a terrible, asinine show, but it was an animated copy of another incredibly stupid show. I'm the last person to defend most modern television, but please stop acting like The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and basically anything else on television, well..basically ever hasnt been complete garbage. Sitcoms, animated or otherwise, are, at best, cliche and mind numbing. Let this guy have his shot, it'd be hard for him to do worse than the original.

Every Flintstones gag ever done on Family Guy has been hilarious and spot on.

Seth is brilliant at what he does, and that's why his animated comedy empire is so huge and why they give him so much power and so much money. The guy has some incredible talent. Way too many haters. Lighten up.

If this was the same Seth McFarlene that made the first two seasons of Family Guy, then I'd give this a chance. Be as it may now, though... eh. Let a mediocre cartoon lay to rest. Seth just doesn't have the same steam as before, and even then, one could argue that he never had it, considering he was taking a lot of inspiration from the Simpsons and Flintstones to begin with. Just let it be. Hopefully it'll have a short run and it can be done with soon.

The Flintstones sucked! Even when I was a little kid I knew that this was the worst, most derivative and laziest form of cartooning imaginable. Seth's even mocked the series on Family Guy before. I am amazed he would want to do his own take on it. To those who don't think his work is genius I offer that Family Guy, in particular, and American Dad and The Cleveland Show are a mix of roughly 50% brilliant humor on top of 50% immature fart jokes. The problem is that if you aren't smart enough to get the smart jokes in them, you only get the base ones and think there is only 50% as much humor as there actually is in the shows and that all of it is asinine. MacFarlain does not "steal" his humor from anywhere. It is unique and brilliant but not for everyone.

I don't know if it will work or not, but there's nothing wrong with giving it a try (the new Looney Tunes show on Cartoon Network is pretty good).

That being said, Seth is spreading himself out pretty thin - Family Guy has suffered as he expanded to American Dad and The Cleveland Show.

I'll tell you Seth is a smart guy, Family Guy can be clever in some occasions and crude and vulgar in other cases. It's a hugely succesful show with funny characters etc. This is similar to me responding on another forum a couple weeks ago to a guy who said shows like Family Guy, American Dad, South Park etc are nothing but rude offensive sickening shows just trying to gain the easy laugh, to him I responded South Park puts forward intresting takes on relligion, society and racism. If you are doubting this watch episodes 200 and 201 and you will see what I mean, I believe this goes the same for Family Guy. Seth's a clever guy and I think you are not showing him the respect he really deserves, you may not personally like him but that doesnt mean you should hate on him just because he's doing something you disagree with. In my opinion I don't think The Flintstones should be remade, but I'm not going to start hating on it before I've even seen it, so just wait and see. You never know Seth could suprise you ;)

Yep, that's why I seldom watch TV anymore. Infomercials are more orignal than the regular programming.

Come on guys!! Seth is a genius, he may have perverted our minds with shows like American Dad and Family Guy, but that doesn't mean he will ruin the Flintstones. He is a genius to try and want to reboot a classic. You guys don't complain when people have went on and ruined classic movies with reboots. And those movies turn out being horrible. Or even turning Comic Books into movies and they end up sucking. MacFarlane isn't going to ruin a classic show, he can only make it better. You all are mad because he is making more money than you, and your mad you didn't come up with the idea and pitch it. If WB is willing sign the rights away to give him a chance to do it, than let him. Don't judge him till you have seen the finished product. You all need to lighten up on the guy, at least he makes entertaining tv and doesn't care who he offends because he is doing what he loves. So give him a chance!!!!

Family Guy is awesome, but do we really need a 4th show from MacFarlane?

I mean how much input does he actually have on American Dad and The Cleveland Show (neither of which I watch).

At some point people just spread themselves too thin and that results in a watered down product (See CSI x3 or Law & Order x3).

"Reboot" is like the new "it" word in Hollywood and TV land. I mean they're no referring to Pirates of the Caribbean latest as a "REBOOT".

Nice marketing term. That way its not a "sequal"... bad, bad word, don't call it a "sequal" or a threqual! Call it a ...'reboot'. Sound more "app" like, more tech-y.

Silliness. But the masses swallow it hook line, its pretty hilarious to watch.

Oh lord this is a terrible idea. But to be clear, McFarlane is very intelligent. He has taken a show that is not very funny, and tricked people into thinking it is funny. I actually have more fun watching people watch family guy because you can see them laughing simply because they think they should. When a character repeats an action or phrase over and over again, that is not funny. But people get it in their head, especially when watching in groups, that this must be funny so they laugh at it. When you ask them to explain why it is funny, they can't. That's not to say Family Guy is not sometimes funny, it certainly can be at times, especially the earlier episodes. The Star Wars parodies are great too, but there in lies the problem, MacFarlane only succeeds when doing parodies, paying homage, or flat our ripping off other shows. American Dad and the Cleveland Show are pure garbage though, not even my friends who swear by family guy like that drivel.

I think that this is a great idea. Seth will put a whole new spin on The Flintstones and make it as funny as ever! BTW for those of you who are afraid that he is going to "pervert" your childhood memories there are a few things that you should know about cartoons this old school. They were originally intended for adult audiences (The Flintstones and even Looney Tunes), they were meant to entertain adults while making jokes and obscure comments about the state that our country was in at the time; not unlike Family Guy, American Dad, or The Cleveland Show. I was watching the episode of The Flintstones in which Fred falls asleep for years and wakes up to a changed Bedrock the other day and I saw several pictures of naked women on the walls of Barney's mansion. If you don't believe me then watch the episode for yourself! A good majority of the cartoons that we all grew up with as kids were originally broadcast to adult audiences in the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. So to say that Seth is going to ruin a show made for adults by adults, when he is one of the few doing that with cartoons already, is just absurd and utterly ridiculous!

      Krazy Kimmy,
I think that was well put after reading a lot of crap on this page. I agree with you and think this could be a good thing. I have been a fan of Macfarlane since I first found out about family guy after it went off the first time. I started watching the frist three seasons on dvd and became a big fan! Since, he has made other shows that I have been pretty into as well and to see him bring back something I enjoyed so much as a kid, I think its pretty kool. If it doesn't end up turning out so great, well hey! Thats television. It happens. But lets all give him a chance here. And like several others have said, If you don't like the idea, don't watch it!

Well said. Seth will seem tame in retrospect. Social commentary and belly laughs...it's been working for over 50 years. I don't get that people aren't liking American Dad. The writing is superior to Family Guy in every way. Actual story lines.Excellent background musical choices. No cutaways to entire music videos (as funny as they may be) The family characters are far more real (therefore funnier) and they are balanced with the wide open palette that is Roger. Roger is "pee my pants" funny. Period.
It will be interesting to see how The Flintstones are treated by Seth. He could pull it off. The Flintstones were formulated and I think it would be relatively simple to bring it up to date. It might be fun. And if you don;t like it...

"The version I heard was," the reason there were "complicated negotiations" was, the rights owners wanted a guarantee from MacFarlane that it would be pretty much a "straight remake" and not "Family Guy 2,000,000 BC" (especially as Fred and Barney have made cameos on Family Guy, so we have some idea what that would be like).

Good lord, someone stop this man! Family guy died after the first two seasons, and the other two shows never achieved much beyond filling a gap in Fox's lineup.

Don't get me wrong, I'll give credit where credit is due: the first two seasons of family guy were brilliant. Accusations of plagiarism aside, I can't think of any other prime time show that struck such an artful balance between humor, character development, plot, pop culture trivia, and awesome vulgarity.

MacFarlane is a funny guy, but the shows have become stale, self referential, and increasingly reliant on obnoxiousness for the sake of obnoxiousness.

If only there was a talented writer/director who could be recruited to steer Mr. MacFarlane in the right direction; someone with an uncanny ability to blend sleaze, stupidity, and pop culture into art that's both meaningful and entertaining...

Oh wait, there is... and his name is JOHN WATERS.

Fox, for the sake of your fans, please bring in Mr. Waters to co-produce this project. Seth has had his fun, but he could use a lesson from daddy on how to turn such an iconic piece of kitsch into a masterpiece of camp.

First off, if you are complaining about Seth ruining your childhood by revamping the Finstones, you are old and not in the demographic he is targeting. Also, I've seen your beloved Finstones, and it is a rip off of the honeymooners. If you think Seth is too vulgar or crude for this task, then you probably saw nothing wrong in how Fred and Barney treated their women, the 1950's cookie cutter world you cling to. 150. It can't be 'family-guy'-ized

McFarlane can't logically turn the Flintstones into his brand of adult humor. and why is that? because if you take a fat guy with a woman that is too good for him, give him a blue collar job, put a 'sidekick' neighbor next to him, and give him a baby that is precocious and acts older than his/her age and try to make it more 'adult' then what you have is 'Family Guy' which is already on the air! Nope. won't happen. He's already done parodies of the Flintstones themselves in Family Guy (and Roadrunner/Wiley, the smurfs, etc. etc.) so that out of the way. I think he'll respect the legacy while bringing it to more modern times (as much as you can with a stoneage setting. Think of Fred carrying an iStone instead of an iPhone for example)

I like Seth's shows – Family Guy, American Dad and Cleveland Show. They may be a bit low brow but are amusing when taken as what they are. I also love the original Flintstones shows. Much like Seth's current shows, The Flintstones poked fun at modern family life and featured pop culture references.

However, I think a reboot is a very bad idea. The Flintstones is great the way it is. Making changes and updating the pop culture references (Hey look, it's Charlie Shale from Two and a Half Cavemen) will not work. Seth should just leave The Flintstones alone and concentrate on keeping his current shows from slipping away.

I CAN'T WAIT!!! McFarlane is a GENIUS. I can't wait to see what he does with The Flintstones. "Family Guy" is one of the most hilarious shows on television. Of course, it's not hilarious to uptight buttheads who think the world should babysit their children for them, but for lighthearted fare with a good dose of irreverance and risque...which are some things badly needed in this messed up world...Family Guy is tops. GO SETH!

Family Guy was great at first, but then it became a crappy succession of, "Remember that one time..." jokes. Now American Dad is pretty good, but it's just what Family Guy was at the beginning. I've never seen The Cleveland Show, so I can't really say anything about it. The point is, I feel like Seth MacFarlane has too many shows. Fox is determined to make everyone a fan of him, when it's simply not possible. Plus, what's wrong with the original Flintstones? Why does there need to be a new one?

That being said, there will never be an animated show better than The Simpsons (though South Park comes close).

The Flintstones were pretty adult during their run. They did respect the sensibilities of the times and so there wasn't any of the vulgarity, graphic violence, toilet bowl humor, etc. that are currently the norm for today's animated toons like Family Guy and American Dad.

There is an outside chance that Seth will properly respect the material and sensibilities of the original. Unfortunately, his track record shows that his is (to date) incapable of writing a show from an innocent age. I'll check it out, but with 3 for 3 experience, expect a massive failure.

I love Family Guy. I do. But he's over reaching already. Cleveland show isn't funny at all and American Dad and Family Guy are running out of steam (maybe because he's got 3 shows to work on). I think he should leave the Flintstones alone. Remakes and Reboots are writers taking someones idea and pretending like it's their own. I refuse to go see remakes in the movies- because despite better graphics today- they're never as good as the original.

I won't have to turn the channel – I simply won't turn it on to begin with. Some things are classics and it is dissapointing that Warner-Bros. agreed to this. Also, play4free Dino rocked. Period.

Seth MacFarlane is a genius. Creating real characters true to our times (who doesn't know a drunk liberal like Brian or a womanizer like Quagmire) isn't the work of an idiot. And to understand and weave in pop culture, stupid jokes, and celebrities with ridiculous commentary on social issues isn't ripping other people off, it's being brilliant. And HILARIOUS!

  195. Bible Clown

I already looked at that. It's stupid. You have cut off that chicken's head on every comment board on CNN. Give it a rest. Try going back in time and learning to write better.
