Sandra Bullock's adopted school reaches milestone

A New Orleans high school that Sandra Bullock "adopted" back in 2007 is celebrating a major achievement.

In a history-making moment on Tuesday, every single student in Warren Easton Charter High School's 220-member senior class graduated, according to a statement from Bullock’s rep.

Even better than the 100 percent graduation rate? Those seniors have been offered a total of $4,625,100 in scholarship money from 15 different colleges and universities.

Bullock got involved with the institution - the oldest public high school in Louisiana - following the devastating Hurricane Katrina and has contributed “hundreds of thousands of dollars” for a new on-campus health clinic, college scholarships, band uniforms and the renovation of the auditorium, her rep says in the statement.

Bullock herself responded to the news saying, "I cannot express how proud I am of the 2011 graduating class at Warren Easton. To achieve a 100% graduation rate just goes to show that the recipe for success lies under that roof. People who believe, people who love and support, and people who don't take no for an answer.”

The Oscar winner, whose adopted son Louis is also from New Orleans, added, “how lucky am I to be a very small part of this great school!"

What a wonderful person Ms. Bullock is. Can you believe this? She is amazing. She could, after all, just watch TV all day and relax. I certainly would. But no, she gets off her duff and DOES things. Things for people. Things to teach us goodness. When I think of the work that Ms. Bullock has done, it gives me hope that the human race does, in fact, have a future. We DO matter.

A conservative will help out people with their own money, and a liberal will help out someone with someone else's money. Think about it. It will help you clear up your mind about how and when to help out others. If all you ever do is use other peoples money to help someone out, you have defined yourself as a liberal.

To J: It said $4,625,100 has been given in scholarships from FIFTEEN colleges/universities. To me, this means given to those who have already applied and been awarded scholarships. Does NOT mean that money will be divided by 220 students graduating. As more students apply and get scholarships, that already huge number will increase. Divide by number of colleges and universities offering scholarships (4,625,100/15 equals an average of $308,340 per university/college). Mighty impressive in my book!!Remember, it is 100% graduation rate. Good chance some won't be going on to college for reasons only they need to know.

I live in New Orleans and know the state of our school system. This is a HUGE achievement. Sandra Bullock's commitment to Warren Easton should be a shining example of what can be accomplished. Every overpaid celebrity should take note–want to give back to the world and your community? Find out what Sandra Bullock and this school did and use it as a blueprint. THIS is where the change MUST occur - in our schools. Without functioning schools and education our society is doomed and poverty, hopelessness and crime will prevail. Congratulations Warren Easton, graduates and Sandra Bullock!

Stop being negative when Sandra Bullock is contributing to the positive in New Orleans!!! Big Thanks to Sandra Bullock!

On a lesser note I am so disappointed that so many comments are racist, hateful & just plain vulgar. These type of comments should not even be allowed to be posted, time for CNN to make sure comments posted are appropriate. Shame on those who speak in such a manner, keep your garbage to yourself.

I think a bigger kudos needs to go out to the school administrators and staff, who obviously took Ms. Bullock's contributions and made a difference in their student's lives. A 100% graduation rate isn't just because of funding, it's because someone paid attention to these kids and made sure that they wanted to graduate and become something more.

It's not clear how any of those would improve academic performance, other than the health clinic giving babymommas-to-be a nice quiet place to hit the books.

You should educate yourself then. Studies have shown that just by improving an environment, children will succeed. Why? A sense of pride and knowing that someone believes in them. Moreover, knowing that there are funds for college gives children hope and something to work for, and this too actually gives children motivation. Malcolm Gladwell sites a number of these studies in his books, and illustrates how, these simple environmental factors CAN make a difference in education. (He even shows that cleaning up graffitti will lower crime– that's right, pride can make a direct change). While I am sure there is much more to the story than this article, you Sir, have it all wrong.

@Roy: you don't have any educational credentials to speak of or for boasting. The crassness of your inexcusable, intangible intuitive leaps was evident in the "baby mama" comment. One would think that you were a product of such a union. Fortunately, NO ONE is taking you seriously.

I, and many others, are proud in which the students of the school took a firmer hold of their education (as well as their personal development) -be it through the assistance in helping to level the playing field (new equipment, bettering the school's physical environment, finding a tutoring program -do I need to go on, Roy?) and finding the inner drive to excel.

did you not go to school, Roy or did you drop out. Research shows that when people are provided the basic needs such as safety, security, esteem, a sense of belonging, that a person can achieve many things and bring out the best in him/her self. Sandra provided these

@Roy: It's not clear *to you*, but that's only a statment about you. You people are just sad, so afraid of reality that you'll just make stuff up to avoid dealing with it.

Roy, please educate yourself so you can make a comment that in someway makes sense, you not Sandra are a threat to this country with your ignorance!

So sad, you are likely jealous that those kids got some education, clearly you never did.

Hate to tell you this, but Ms. Bullock's support to Warren Easton is UNDER-REPRESENTED in this article. Her support for the school is in the seven-figure range and includes much more than is mentioned in this story. As for the impact of a clinic, in a city where the public hospital system and private hospitals are strained to serve even insured patients, having an on-site health clinic allows kids to get doctor's slips to participate in school activities and get illnesses and injuries checked out that they might not be able to do given that their parents would have to take an unpaid day off from work in order to take them to the doctor.

That's pretty amazing, I can't think of the last time I saw that a class that size had a 100% grad rate. Those kids should be very proud of themselves, especially considering all the hardships their families and their city have faced.
Sandra seems like a very nice, kind, and generous woman, and I'm sure everyone at the school is appreciate of the help she's given them. She's been involved with the school for a long time now, long before it was ever made public.

Obviously Ian, you need to read up on the news. As Peace pointed out, it was her ex husband who committed adultery. Before making a statement, make sure you know your facts. You SHOULD care because she's supporting our future and considering that the US has one of the lowest standings in education in the world, it's encouraging to see our students progressing in their scholastic programs and not failing or dropping out.

No, Snakey and I are just partners in "hate."

In the eyes of nature, Sandy is a pitiful loser, as she not only has no blood children, but has chosen to devote herself to a child from a group as alien to her as can be. All for Hollywood brownie points.

That dirty dog Jesse, OTOH, is doing just fine. His genes will see the future. Way to go, bro'.

Are you REALLY that stupid? Really? Or is your ignorance just a ploy and you're actually a highly educated, wonderful person? No? Yeah, I didn't think so! Your ignorance is glaring! Good luck with your loser life!

Sandra Bullock is a wonderful person who understands the real value of education. Congrats to the kids and to Sandra for caring.

Why do people get baited by comments by Roy and Snakey Z? They're not serious, just yanking your chain! Keep cheering for all the hard work the students did and smile twice. Once for the kids and the second for Sandra Bullock.
