ABC leans on fantasy with its new scheduleSpinning off the success that has been "Modern Family," "Dancing with the Stars" and "Grey's Anatomy," ABC on Tuesday announced its slate of new primetime shows for 2011-12. The network is hoping fantasy, superheroes and fairy tales go over big with audiences, and has cleared the slate with several cancellations to make room for their new offerings. "The real power of ABC is our storytelling," said ABC's new entertainment president, Paul Lee, during Tuesday's upfronts presentation. "ABC always leads with emotion and with character. Our shows are smart and they have a huge amount of heart. I think our brand of uplifting entertainment could not be more relevant for this time." 'Glee' star on new album, rooftop rendezvousWe had a chance to chat with Matthew Morrison - Will Schuester himself - Monday night at "Starburst Presents: VH1 Save The Music Foundation's Songwriter Music Series" at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square. Morrison talked about his self-titled debut solo album, telling CNN, "I got to work with some really great people: Sting, Elton John, Gwyneth Paltrow... and it was such a tough thing to do because I have a heavy schedule with 'Glee.' It was such a labor of love, but I'm really excited and it turned out great." Morrison played the ukelele during the acoustic set he performed at the event. One of the singles Morrison performed was "Summer Rain," which is the first song he wrote for the album. Lisa Edelstein exiting 'House'Fans of the relationship between Dr. Gregory House and Lisa Cuddy on Fox's popular series "House" will be in mourning today. Lisa Edelstein, a.k.a. "Cuddy," announced on Tuesday that she will not be returning for the show's eighth season. The actress released a statement (confirmed by the show's producer Greg Yaitanes) to Deadline saying, "After much consideration, I am moving onward with a combination of disappointment at leaving behind a character I have loved playing for seven years and excitement of the new opportunities in acting and producing that lie ahead." Once a 'Bitch,' now a 'Belle' on ABCABC is swapping out one "B" word for another. The network just announced its fall TV line-up and lo and behold, the title of the upcoming series "Good Christian Bitches" has been changed. New title: "Good Christian Belles." The Parents Television Council had declared the original title "offensive" and urged its members to bombard ABC with complaints. The CW to pick up reality show about celeb hatersWe’ve seen celebrities attack each other before on reality shows, and now The CW is offering non-celebs a chance to get up close and personal with stars they can’t stand. According to Deadline, the network is expected to announce that it's picking up a reality show called “H8R” on Thursday. Hosted and executive produced by “Extra’s” Mario Lopez, the reality show gives a celebrity the chance to confront his or her biggest “hater” so the star can try and convince the regular Joe that all that vitriol is misdirected. A pilot episode featuring Snooki and Kim Kardashian facing off against their haters has reportedly been well-received. (We gotta ask: If you were to get the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with the celeb you find most detestable, who would it be?) In addition to "H8R," the network is also expected to announce that it's picked up the Sarah Michelle Gellar series "Ringer," which marks Gellar's return to the small screen as a troubled young woman on the run from the mob. Johnny Depp and Queen Elizabeth are cousins?Johnny Depp might be upset about being left off the royal wedding guest list now that it's been revealed that he and Queen Elizabeth are reportedly distant cousins. According to the Daily Mail, the "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" star and the British monarch both share the same bloodline. One branch of Depp's ancestors are descended from 15th-century aristocrats Sir William Gascoigne and his wife Margaret Percy, who hailed from Yorkshire, England. Margaret was the daughter of the third Earl of Northumberland and also a direct descendent of King Edward III. Queen Elizabeth is Edward III's great-granddaughter, 17 times removed, and Depp's cousin, 20 times removed. Life’s a witch on the fourth season of ‘True Blood’With little more than a month to go before the season four premiere of HBO’s "True Blood," fans are taking every opportunity to read the tea leaves whenever the network releases a new trailer.
So, what can we expect this season? Bon Temps’ cornucopia of supes will be joined by a coven of witches, and Marnie, the Head Witch in Charge, is none other than the terrific Fiona Shaw of "Harry Potter" fame. Of course it wouldn’t be the show we all know and love without the copious amount of sex, sweat and Lafayette. Perhaps the best part of this trailer – there’s nary a fairy to be seen. A girl can dream, right? HBO’s "True Blood" premieres Sunday, June 26 at 9 p.m.ET/8 p.m. CT. January Jones: Distance caused split from 'SNL' starDating in the spotlight has become something of a catch-22 for “Mad Men" star January Jones. The mom-to-be, who confirmed her pregnancy in April, tells Allure magazine’s June issue, “When you date someone else who’s in the industry, someone has to make the sacrifices. And if no one’s willing to, then you just have to be friends.” But on the other hand, she says, how will a guy who’s not in the industry take it when she says, “'I’m sorry, I need to go away for three months and kiss other men while you stay here’”? Future challenges on 'How I Met Your Mother'This season of "How I Met Your Mother" has certainly seen its ups and downs. One of my least favorite story arcs, Ted's relationship with Zoey, came to an end on Monday night's season finale. Barney and Robin were successful in stopping Ted from getting back together with her (and considering that Jennifer Morrison has a new show on ABC, we knew how that was going to go, anyway). Instead, Ted's flowers ended up going to a woman sitting at another table in the restaurant where Zoey was waiting for him. At that point, Older Ted said, "And kids, that's how I met your mother. Psych! It was just some chick." Sandra Bullock's adopted school reaches milestoneA New Orleans high school that Sandra Bullock "adopted" back in 2007 is celebrating a major achievement. In a history-making moment on Tuesday, every single student in Warren Easton Charter High School's 220-member senior class graduated, according to a statement from Bullock’s rep. Even better than the 100 percent graduation rate? Those seniors have been offered a total of $4,625,100 in scholarship money from 15 different colleges and universities. |
