Mel Gibson's 'Beaver' disappoints at box office

Mel Gibson has said that friends like Whoopi Goldberg and Jodie Foster have stood by him through tough times, but will moviegoers?

Gibson’s film “The Beaver,” which co-starred and was directed by Foster, opened in limited release this weekend to poor box office returns. After a bow in 22 theaters, “Beaver” only pulled in $104,000, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The movie, released a little less than a year after the controversy surrounding Gibson and his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva made headlines, tells the story of a deeply depressed toy company CEO (Gibson) who relies on a beaver puppet to help turn his life back around.

As the Hollywood Reporter points out, “The Beaver” had plenty of pre-release publicity, what with Gibson’s personal struggles and Foster’s ardent support of him during press stops. (And who can forget a movie title like that?)

Some critics also appreciated the film and Gibson’s performance, with Rolling Stone saying “[this] flawed but heartfelt movie has the power to sneak up and floor you,” and Roger Ebert saying the movie shows “another of Mel Gibson’s fine performances, a reminder that he is after all a superb actor.”

And yet, while the movie’s studio Summit Entertainment was hoping for a per-screen average of $15,000 to $18,000, in actuality that average was $4,745, reports THR.

Summit Entertainment president of domestic distribution Richie Fay tells the Los Angeles Times that while some may pinpoint Gibson’s public perception as the root of the problem, he believes it has more to do with the movie itself.

“I don’t think this is as much a repudiation of Mel and his personal life as it is about a film with difficult subject matter,” Fay said. “As it turns out, I think the film is more of an art-house specialty kind of movie than a broader commercial film….even though it’s got a commercial actor in it like Mel Gibson.”

“The Beaver” will expand to 30 theaters next weekend and was expected to go wide on May 20, but the L.A. Times reports that it will likely stay limited to an “art-house run.”

I finally saw Braveheart after people telling me for 15 years how incredible it was & now that I've seen it, I've gotta' say...ehhhh, it wasn't anything special. & Charlie Sheen's insanity is overrated as well. Give me Hunter S. Thompson any day, well, any day when he was still alive that is.

Saw it this weekend. People who said they didn't like it, probably didn't see it. It was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. A very heart felt film. Mel hating has become somewhat of a sport. A sport with no winners except for the people who actually go to see his films.

Was the movie even advertised??? Sometimes it has to do with how much the public is exposed to an upcoming film and I haven't heard a word about this movie. PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE!!!!!!!!!

I'm suprised that these hollywood white people couldn't feel the public about Mel Gibson. I for one don't wan't to see anything he is in, much less feature films. I know now that Mel won't get another feature film or other wouldn't want to loose money for him or a project.

Mel made his mark in early Aussie cult films like Mad Max. But just for kicks and a good dose of relativity, go back and try to seriously watch the original Lethal Weapon (which I loved at the time of release). I tried sitting through it recently and was overcome by cringing and twitching and finally had to turn it off. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover turn in some of the worst acting and dialogue I have ever witnessed in what is now considered to be a blockbuster film. Mel scored in Braveheart because of the sweeping historical drama, battle scenes, and scenery. He scored again with Passion of the Christ because every Catholic in the world went to see it. The man is completely overrated as an actor, no matter what his personal life consists of.

And, did anybody actually make it to the ending scene of Signs? I did on the the third try while laid up with a knee injury and nothing else on in the afternoon. Has there ever been a movie with more hype that had no idea what to do with a script that had no idea how to wrap up meaningless loose ends?

The presale form opening inlimited theaters shwo a very good sale.
Thor made 66 Millions doalrs in 4 days in USA all 5000 theaters but in those 66 Milion are inculded all europeans theaters in whihc thor has opened since april!!
So no, Thor didnt made that much for a blockbuster and comparativly, The Beaver did better!!
104.000 doalrs in 21 theaters in 3 days thats 5000 doalrs by theater by day, multiplicated by 5000 theaters form May 20, thats 25 million dolars by day, form thrusday to sunday, multiplicate by 4, thats 100 Million dolars by weekend for the USA alone, x4 fro 4 weeks, thats 400 Million Dollars in 4 weks for the US alone.. Multiplicate that by 2, for the european and international relase stating on june 1st, and oyu have about 800 Million dolars for the Beaver for this suimmer alone!!
Now if the movie is shown ofr more than 4 weeks, and it wil be in most theaters in Europe, and if it works wel in USA as well, and oyu have a movie that wil gross 1 billion dolalrs in 5 to 6 weeks!!
Since that movie costed only 21 milloon dolars to make, who were aready paid by foresale of the movie to foreign countries, it means that all money made is money in the pocket of Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson!!
It alos mean that The Beaver will be much more finacialy profitable that blockbuster like Spiderman did in 2002, as it made 400 M dolars worldwide but costed almsot as much to make... and than Avatar who grossed almost 2 Billion dolars worldwide but costed 3 Bilion dolars to make!!!...

I have always enjoyed Mel Gibson movies, and the rants that were recorded and edited for that scheming girlfriend were out of control and out of context. He was driven to madness, and it was caught on tape. Blame the demon alcohol, or call him trash if you must. I just don't equate what he said to his career and his abilities. Actors get paid to act, and he as been paid well and has been successful because he has that gift. I will give him the same audience I gave him before his infamous escapade, because I enjoy his work. I am not electing him Mayor, or asking him to speak at a Church group, I have no interest in either one. I like movies, and have enjoyed his in the past, including "The Edge of Darkness" which premiered after his driving tirade. For all you that have sworn off his movies forever ... thanks for saving me a seat in the theater by not showing up there yourself!

Gibson's drunken, racist rant doesn't mean much to me. I'm sure he feels as most prejudiced Americans do, and with a few drinks, he said what was on his mind. I don't approve, and I think it makes him a jerk, but it does not affect whether I'll watch his movies or not. In this case, the movie looked horrible, so I won't go see it. I really don't think the low showing at the box-office has anything to do with Gibson at all but the movie itself. I have a feeling they will see much better ratings when it hits cable/DVD. It seems these days people who actually pay to go to the theater go for an escape, either to be scared, laugh, or watch non-stop action...it's an escape. People don't seem to be as into paying the high-prices at theaters to watch movies that deal with tough subject matter like this one.

I would probably pay to go see it myself if I had the time to do so...instead I'm forced to wait for it to hit rental where I can have it sent to me from Netflix or watch it on cable.

As for those of you who believes he's an abuser...wow, you take the word of ONE woman who is known for doing this to men (claiming they are abusers...Mel is NOT the first one she's done this to.) She's even turned on a dime and dropped her domestic abuse case against him. I don't take domestic abuse lightly but this is her go-to strategy with men, all you have to do is do your research on her.

I don't understand when people try to ignore such criminal behavior (physical abuse is criminal behavior) by saying "nobody is perfect". Being imperfect and being an abuser are way different, and the latter behavior should not be tolerated. Enough women have been killed as a result of domestic abuse. Gibson is an abuser. I could care less that people are upset with Mel's personal issues, none of my business to begin with, the fact remains the man is a hell of an actor, always has been and I think one of the few that could take a film like this and do its character justice.

Ok I also need to change the subject – some of you more popular actors that are doing these weird flicks that are bombing possibly because you think you are above performing in films that are popular right now, marvel (by the way who is going to do "Wonder Woman") scripts dealing with magic, dragons, vampires, get the HE## over it, its whats popular and wanted right now! You are the only ones losing out by not doing them.

Mel Gibson is an idiot with some really stupid religious beliefs but I skipped this movie because of the stupid premise.

Your beliefs (or non-beliefs) are just as stupid as Gibson's. We are all destined for the same sticky end, therefore, nothing really matters.

Everyone I know that has seen this movie said that Mel Gibson deserves an Oscar nomination – he's THAT good. Hollywood hates him because he is conservative, Catholic, and has admitted he was wrong and done something about it. Not like Charlie Sheen, who's ranting and raving is much more obnoxious and foul than anything Gibson ever said. But Sheen is a good liberal, so he'll be given a get-out-of-jail-free-card by the liberal Hollywood elite. Gibson is an excellent actor, director and is a human being with faults and problems just like every other person in this crazy world. At least he's trying to straighten up and fly right. Once it comes to my town, I'll be there to see it.

To be fair I think that a film starring ANY actor and with this story line – guy communicates via a hand puppet with a mockney accent – would have an uphill battle to become a critical and box-office success. The fact that MG is perceived to have gone off the deep end real life in various ways and this is apparently "come-back vehicle" for him doesn't exactly help the general public embrace it! Personally this definitely does NOT appeal, on subject or on the star.

You are so right about Charlie Sheen!!! And, he's made out to be some sort of phenomenal hero to worship and follow, has a huge following for his live shows, etc. So, tell me.......how is what MG has said worse that things that have come out of Charlie's mouth...or his actions? Definite hypocricy at play here. You are also right on target with everything you said in your post........in my opinion. And, I thank you for that!!!!!

@ JustMe: Wow! I'm surprised that so few people have brought politics into this discussion, so congratulations. You call him a catholic and a conservative, I call him a drunk driver, racist and a wife beater. I agree that he is a talented actor and has been in some great films, but honestly, considering he keeps making the same mistakes over and over, I don't think he's trying to turn over a new leaf. If the reason he isn't getting good roles now was because he is conservative and catholic, he would never have been a great movie star in the 80s and 90s, now would he? As for Charlie Sheen, I don't think getting fired from one of the most popular television shows there is right now is a get-out-of-jail free card. I respect your right to your opinions. Personally I wouldn't want to see any more Gibson films or any more Charlie Sheen TV shows simply because they are both jerks. Politics have nothing to do with it for me. Oh, and if you must know, I am one of those elitist liberals.

I like Mel Gibson movies in general, but I don't like heartfelt dramas. I liked "Signs", and the ones he directed: "Passion of the Christ", and "Apocalypto"– and let's not forget "Braveheart" all a lot.

So, my passing on this movie has nothing to do with him but more the material. I like Jodie Foster, too.

You are finished in the movie industry Mel. Too bad you had to drag Jodie Foster who is a talented actress and director down with you on this film. You had a good run old man. You have fabulous wealth. Now that you made a fool of yourself with you're rants, retire and go do something productive with your life like volunteering with some charitible organazation. No one wants to see your dried up old man face anymore.

You do realize that this was Jodie Foster's movie? That Ms. Foster approached Mel Gibson to be a part and to star in it? Mel Gibson is a fabulous actor and an accomplished director and I will never tire of seeing him on screen. And frankly, I could care less about his personal beliefs; this is America and we have the right to free speach, thought and will. And by Hollywood's standards MG's issues are tame. Next time check your facts before you open your mouth and let all that junk out.

One of these days you will also be old and used up, and maybe nobody will want to see your dried up old face anymore, either. Have and show a little respect for those older than you. And, there is little doubt that you've opened your mouth and spewed froth that you later regretted (even though you probably meant it). Know the old adage about "People that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones?" Jodie Foster chose Mel Gibson for this film, and has put her reputation and career on the line to do so and be his friend. Friends like that are rare and priceless. Both are extremely talented actors and deserve our consideration for their craft, regardless of their personal lives or personalities. You don't want to look at MG's face in a film, FINE, but don't denegrade his acting talent because of your own personal beliefs and feelings. Most reviews of the film are great. Give credit due where credit is due. Spouting your own hatred really makes you no better than MG.
