Fans of “The Daily Show” and the short lived HBO series “Flight of the Conchords” are likely to recognize Kristen Schaal for her bizarre antics on both series, but she also stars as the voice of Louise, the weirdest child in the extremely weird family at the center of “Bob’s Burgers” (recently renewed for a second season).
So, what convinced Schaal to take on this role? “When they asked me. I wasn't sure if the show was real or not for a while because there were lots of workshops to test it out. So when it did get picked up, I was really surprised.”
Schaal told reporters this past week that her favorite part of the job is “to yell a lot and being encouraged to continue yelling. That's unusual for a job, so that’s one of my favorite aspects.”
This was not her first time in the sound booth, however; she was also in “Toy Story 3.”
“I'm immortal now,” Schaal said. “Those are films that are going to be classics. They're timeless. They're perfect. And they’re something I know in 40 years I'll be watching with other kids, or whatever I have, kids or aliens. I don't know. Hopefully, it's not an alien baby. But you can't be sure.”
And for those of you out there who wish that “Flight of the Conchords” could have continued beyond its two seasons, in some form, Schaal feels the same. “I think there's more songs to sing and more stories to tell,” she said. “I just got drunk around Jemaine [Clement] a few weeks ago one night and was like, ‘When's the movie?’ I got the guts to just throw it out there. But I got no response. So, I'll continue to get him drunk, and see if I can lure him to write the script.”
In the meantime, she’s excited to play Louise for at least a while longer, practicing what she describes as the formula for good comedy: “Tragedy, and time and yelling.”
“Bob’s Burgers” is back after “The Simpsons” Sunday night at 8:30 ET/PT on Fox.
