"X Factor" and "American Idol" producer Simon Cowell is betting on success with his upcoming game show "Red or Black."
The series, which will air on Britain's ITV1 over seven nights this fall, will begin with 7,000 contestants competing in a series of chance-based challenges, according to the Hollywood Reporter. That number will eventually be pared down to just a handful of competitors, who will face a giant roulette wheel and bet on red or black for the chance to win one million pounds (approximately $1.65 million U.S.).
"A lot of TV shows I see are quite boring. I like the fact that we are doing something that is high-concept," says Cowell. "Every single night someone is going to have to make that decision [red or black—to win a million pounds]. That isn't something we have seen more than a few times on television. Thank goodness ITV gives us the budget to do something big."
The series, which will be taped at Wembley Arena, will be hosted by British TV personalities Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donelly. Donelly believes "Red or Black" differs from other game shows in that contestants don't require special skills or knowledge.
"No talent is involved," he said. "If your luck holds out 10 times in a row you will win a million."
