Looks like Johnny Depp is moving back to "21 Jump Street"—the actor is set to make a cameo in the big-screen adaptation of his popular '80s TV series.
As Marquee previously reported, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will headline the movie about cops who go undercover as high school students. According to Entertainment Weekly, Depp—who starred on the Fox series with Holly Robinson Peete, Peter DeLuise and Dustin Nguyen—will also play a small role in the film.
Hill, who co-wrote the script, has long said he wanted Depp to be a part of the movie. "Hopefully, he does it," he said back in November. "It would be awesome if he did it."
Though details of Depp's cameo have yet to be revealed, the actor jokingly came up with a scenario for his character, telling EW last year, “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.”
The "21 Jump Street" movie is set to begin shooting in New Orleans this month.
Remakes are not inherently bad or wrong. Jimmy Stewart's version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much," Charlton Heston's version of "The Ten Commandments," Boris Karloff's version of "Frankenstein," and Steve McQueen's "The Magnificent Seven" are all classics - and all remakes of earlier films. Problems develop when a remake is miscast, unfaithful to the original and/or a faded Xerox.
He should have Tim Burton's hair and make-up people do him up right for the cameo.
The only reason anyone will buy a ticket to this remake is to see JD hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in his underpants.
F New Orleans!!!!!!
how are ppl going to believe this is set in Washington st. without the mountains/ocean???
get this movie shot in Vancouver.
Its not jump street without the skytrain, Granville St., Gas Town, the mountains, beaches & ocean.
btw Where the hell is Blowfish!!!!! in the cast????
GD Americans who cant come up with original ideas!!!!
always messing up good shows.
Ok I heard he takes a big dump on a guy's face during the bathroom scene.
This is great news I think johnny is a great actor! I hope he takes the part.
Im so looking forward to the gay love seen with myself and Peter DeLuise.
I wonder what Whawhawhat is drinking at Milky D(ick)s to make him so grumpy?
21 Jumpstreet (the show) was cheesy (and wonderful) for its time. Not sure how it's tested over the years, but anybody who grew up watching it has to at least give this remake a shot.
Mattk and Really? said it best: the old show wasn't Shakespeare, and it's formula was really a simple one, so there's no reason to judge this remake before it's given its due.
That said, I too would LOVE to see cameos from the old cast members. What else have they got goin on?!
The only reason that Depp got this role is because ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER turned it down.
His cameo better be him being chased by the cops, yelling "I've got a jar of dirt!"
YES! The best line of his whole career. With the exception of every other line from 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.'
The 80's are over. Worry about something substantial in 2011.......
Huh, did you cry when they remade Miami Vice?
I elect whawhawhat for President of the kiss my ass club!
James the idiots disagreeing with you are a prime example of the sheep that support the crap that Hollywood loops out. Jumping on the band wagon with no clue.
To the one that depp wouldnt be able to play a high school student, ohhhh but he dam sure could still be in the school as the janitor, teacher, couch,or hell even the princiable right!!!!! now stfu.its something to,besides do drugs like little miss whats her face lohan lmao
Why not make a Greatest American Hero movie next? Hollywood is becoming washed up with originality. Look at TV nowadays, CSI Miami, CSI Vegas, CSI New York, the many faces of Law & Order, the countless rip offs they feed us daily. It was just a matter of time that movies would become the same. I say bring back Growing Pains with both Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio reprising their roles....we know Hollywood has already thought about it.
I would watch a Greatest American Hero movie just to see an updated version of the dude crash-landing.
remakes make me sick hollywood has gone down hill
Youre a moron. It's good that your opinion means absolutely nothing
Totally agree. Thes guys are tools and the movie will be crap. I hope they lose their shirts making this. Whawhawhat is also a tool and I hope wastes his money watching it.
Someone in Hollywood is likely planning a remake of '80s hit "Purple Rain" starring Justin Bieber as The Kid, the cast of iCarly as the Revolution, Miley Cyrus as Apollonia, and the Jonas Brothers as Morris Day and the Time. Yippee! :-(
Too bad he won't be the Riddler.
I love Party Monster! Check out Gummo next.
If Depp didn't I guess they could of used robert downey jr.
Once again, nothing original from Hollywood!
i can see johnny depp has much in store for summer. please be easy on him. thanks gary
he is a good actor but nota fan of him!!!
It's a whole lot easier to sit back and criticize others than to actually have the talent to create or revamp anything. Movie makers put out what people will pay for. Period. U want higher quality work, find more people who are interested in it. And yes read a freakin book! On a lighter note, J. Depp still looks so dam good doesnt he? (sigh)
Has everyone forgotten the Captain? Steven Williams. He's done Bernic Mac and Criminal Minds. Don't he deserve an honorable mention if not a cameo too
All you people suck. The reason you don't make movies is because you suck. Do your job and finish wiping my pubes off the toilet seat at milky ds
I prefer dumpster juice
Whoo hoo! I'm gonna watch that MOVIE!
I would rather see a reunion of the original cast or at least bring back all of the original actors for cameos. Been watching the old show on Netflix instant view. Pretty fun and cheesy 80s nostalgia for me.
i would rather see you lick my balls. How is a 50 year old johnny depp gonna play a highschooler genius.
@ James: have you seen Cyrus? That was a great movie! I don't think another actor would have worked in that role as well as Jonah Hill did. Definitely not "garbage juice”. Chill the F out, and maybe read a book or something.
Pointless and a waste of time.
Greico for president 2012 !!!!
Agreed. President of the Ceptic Tank Cleaners Union.
oops, dudes! landed in the wrong place again. phucking phone booth time machine! c ya !
I swear! Hasnt Hollywood heard of the saying 'If it isnt broken, dont fix it'? I agree no remake. An up to date version would be alot better. Otherwise theyll run a good thing into the ground. And why not habe all the stars make a cameo appearence if possible, instead of just Depp? I also agree, its time for Hollywood to come up w/some original work for a change. Well I liked the original show and watched just about every episode. So Ill check out the new version. Keep your fingers crossed!
Maybe you should write some movies instead of whining....or are you one of the choosen few who gets to point out what others should do but never amount to anything more than a fast food employee her whole life?
Depp treats objects like women.
I think Depp should play the role of the Captain. and instead of a remake should just make it an up to date version. Deluise could be the retired deli owner and Robinson could be a D.A. or something.
Loved 21 Jump Street, was sorry when Depp left, never liked the Grieco replacement. Have enjoyed most of Depp's movies and am glad to see him doing a cameo here. He seems to be a nice person, was very pleased to see him accept his award from the Kid's Choice in person, he was about the only recipient I knew off – my tweens made me watch. Would like to see Holly Robinson and DeLuise too.
Maybe Richard Grieco could do a cameo as the school janitor.
Oh he wasn't a janitor in the original?
The TV series were awesome. I wonder how they are going to make a great movie out of it. It's too bad that Stephen J Canell couldn't be around to see this. Also too bad they won't be filming it in Vancouver – where the original TV series were shot. I hope each character makes a cameo, sort of where are they now.
Don't think I would have picked Jonah and Channing for 21 Jump Street movie. There has to be a better choice for the leads.
Maybe you should move to Hollywood and become a casting director
Yea, you put the 'grunt' in disgruntled, poopy pants! Somebody liked the show enough to write an adaptation for the big screen, secure funds and talent for its production, and ask your sorry a$$ to watch it. what a crime...
hopefully they won't mess with the theme song. and while i am at it....why is no one making a "greatest american hero" movie.......best show ever
I'm so happy there making a 21 jump street film that was my TV series of all tine and depp is my favorite actor looking forward to seeing it
I had to catch my breath after reading that.
I'm a fan of Jonah Hill but every remake over the past 5 years has sucked hairy balls. This will come out, have a mild opening weekend then crash.. Miami Vice anyone?
need i say more than....STARSKY and HUTCH....quite possibly one of the worst remakes.....EVER
Depp has had a tremendous Career.
Depp is a real superstar.
johnny depp should play a crackhead hanson informant.
Hmmm...I was thinking more along the lines of Tom Sizemore or Marion Berry.
@James – Bitter much, dude? Have you read the script? Do you know the plot of the movie? I am not one to go all gangbusters on remakes, but I at least have the respect to give it a shot after watching the previews if they look good. And nothing against Jonah Hill, but the series had one Romeo and one SideKick.. Depp was the chick magnet and DeLuise was the comic relief. Same would be here with Tatum as the chick magnet and Hill as the comic relief.
His boyfriend would clean the rim off last night.....he doesn't like the feel of toilet paper
Someone sounds disgruntled.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum? So, it's a parody? Doesn't anyone have respect for other peoples work anymore? Someone already had this idea, back in the 80's. I wish I knew what it was like to be totally comfortable taking credit for only being mildly creative. "Well, I took a show that already existed, with a plot line that already existed, and then I threw in a few jokes and called it my own". Superbad was the last Jonah Hill film worth watching. Absolutely everything since then has just been a giant cup of garbage juice. There has never been a Channing Tatum film worth watching, so no point searching his IMDB.
Maybe you should drink less coffee and more garbage juice.
Its a good thing nobody cares what you have to say. Youre cabbage. I bet your favorite movie is party monster
Agree 100% with you Dave!!!! Now look at all the unimaginative SHEEP out there criticize you for making a great point!!! As long as there are morons who were either not born when original things were made (hence, they have no sentimental or nostalgic ties) or are just idiots for the sake of being idiots, non-creativity and untalented hacks will prosper in "hollywood".

I have your back James I grew up in the 80s when talent and original ideas mattered. Only someone born waaaaayyy after the fact or a moron OR both which seems to be the case here would disagree.
LOL! You act as if the show had been the 80's answer for Shakespeare. It was a crappy show which will have a crappy remake. As it should be. Let it go!
I agree. Seems like all remakes these days are just campy parodies of how shows are remembered, not how they actually were. Not all original shows consisted of camp comedy, so why make campy remakes? Oh yeah, because the writers have no original ideas so they have to rely on contrived humor. Yawn.
