Donald Trump’s "birther" claims don’t seem to be winning the mogul a lot of supporters in Hollywood: Robert De Niro is the latest star to speak out against Trump’s frequent questioning of President Obama’s citizenship.
De Niro was speaking with NBC News' Brian Williams at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, the issue arose when the topic of politics came up.
“Certain people in the news the last couple of weeks, just, what are they doing? It’s crazy," De Niro said. "They’re making statements about people that they don’t even back up. Go get the facts before you start saying things about people.”
Although at first De Niro didn’t want to mention any names, after Williams asked if the person the actor was referring to has “a show on my network on Sunday night," De Niro admitted that he was talking about Trump, who's been making the rounds talking about a potential presidential run.
“It’s like a big hustle; it’s like being a car salesman,” De Niro went on. “Don’t go out there and say things unless you can back them up. How dare you? That’s awful to do. To just go out and speak and say these terrible things? Unless you just wanna get over and get the job. It’s crazy.”
De Niro's statements come on the heels of Jerry Seinfeld's own denouncement of Trump's remarks. The comedian said last week that he canceled on a benefit hosted by the Eric Trump Foundation because he'd grown "increasingly uncomfortable" with the statements the "Celebrity Apprentice" host has been making about the President, and "feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse."
As he did with Seinfeld, Trump has lobbed a retort back at De Niro.
While on a call to "Fox & Friends," Trump said of the actor, "He's not the brightest bulb on the planet. I've been watching him over the years, and I like his acting, but you know - in terms of when I watch him doing interviews and various other things - we're not dealing with Albert Einstein."
