Jim Carrey's on his way to 'The Office'

Expect the season finale of "The Office" to end on a truly funny note now that Jim Carrey has signed on to appear in the hourlong episode.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Carrey will join fellow guest stars Ricky Gervais, Will Arnett, James Spader, Ray Romano and Catherine Tate as candidates who want to take over the job vacated by former Dunder Mifflin office manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

Though Will Ferrell, who plays Deangelo Vickers, seems to have a lock on the job at the moment, Spader and "Doctor Who" alum Tate are likely to be the most serious contenders to take over for Carell, since all of the other actors are committed to other projects.

The season 7 finale of "The Office" airs May 19.

Which actor would you like to see manage "The Office"?

Jim Carrey is the only actor that is as awesome as Steve Carell, in my eyes. I really really really really hope he gets picked. I will cry tears of joy! I love Steve Carell but I've accepted that he's leaving and if anyone can come the closest to filling his shoes, it's Jim Carrey!

I'm fine with Jim Cary as long as he doesn't use the forum to proselytize the fabricated attack on vaccinations as a primary cause of autism. I have yet to hear a retraction or apology to any families who followed Cary's advise and withheld vaccinations and eventually contracted the disease that the vaccinations were intended to protect against.

I can totally see James Spader in the show. He is a wonderful actor who is great at dry humor. I think he could create a character that would allow all the cast members to shine without being so over the top as to make ensemble work impossible; heck he held his own with William Shatner without resorting to chewing all the scenery...no easy task! Both Will Ferrell (as he has already demonstrated) and Jim Carey are so over the top that they would tend to unbalance the show. Spader definitely gets my vote. I doubt this will come to pass because he signed to do a movie the week before The Office announcement, so he too could be out of the running.

A lot of these ideas are alright.

WIll Ferell seems like a great candidate. While I thought his comedy was good initially (Ex: Step Brothers, Anchorman, ect.), I didn't think he'd be able to fit the spot. Then I saw him in The Other Guys, in which he filled a totally different role and it worked out great. I think Ferell could pull it off.

I like Jim Carrey, but as others have said, I think he's too big of a movie star. Plus, he seems more like a physical comedian, which is too energetic for the role.

Some others I'd like to see try and fill the role would be: Vince Vaughn, Simon Pegg, Kevin James, or even Stephen Colbert/Jon Stewart. The last two are highly unlikely, but I think they can mend that comedic genius to fill the role.

i think it is gonna be todd packer. they sent him to sabre headquarters in tallahassee a few episodes ago and in the last episode they talked about Micheal Scott giving recommendations for him replacement. Who better for him to recommend then his best friend Todd Packer? it just all fits together. I dont think its gonna be a good idea to bring him on as the manager but i could see it happening. He definitely has the Scranton personality.

Simon Pegg-yes. Ricky Gervais and Russel Bland-no. Zach Braff-yes. Packer-yes. Dwight K. Schrute-yes. The Temp-yes. Basically, anyone from the office would be good. Jim Carrey-no. Will Ferrett-no. Spader-yes. Romano, Arnett, Tate-no. Final answer!

Ray Romano? Are you kidding me? The Office was created because of TV being dominated by painfully unfunny shows like Everybody Love Raymond. If they put Romano on The Office, it will be a death blow to the show.

With that being said...hasn't The Office run it's course? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the show, but just feel like some sitcoms are worn out (I'll skip naming a few others). Steve Carell gets it, so it would seem the rest of the cast should take their cue as well.

$1000 says they make Pam boss, they have already given her more responsibility around the office as well as a more dominant authoritative roll. My guess is they end up adding a character but in a different position. I don't know how I would like that though, i also feel the Pam and Jim story line to be lame and it would end up focusing on them far too much.

When I saw Carrey and thought Drew and not Jim. Truthfully, they should put an ensamble actor or a Character actor in the slot. Think Carrell before the office. What they will do is put someone in thats descpicable, but someone who can make you feel sorry for him, like Carrell, and Gervais before him. John C. Reilly would be a great fit. Better than who has been mentioned. Paul Rudd is a good choice, I think the best choice would be Bruce Campbell though.

I think they blew it completely. Bringing in big names to replace Steve Carell was a terrible idea. I love Will Ferrell but I think he's a bad fit for The Office. I personally think they should have written Jim to be the new manager. He already has a dynamic with the corporate people and the pranks that he has pulled over the years are way more epic than anything that Michael Scott would have done. I think that they are just trying to nail the coffin shut on a big positive note on this one. RIP The Office, we loved you while you were great!

I am responsible for getting a lot of people hooked on the office...(Taking a bow...lol)...I did panic a little when I heard Steve Carrell was leaving, but there are a couple of people who just might pull it off...I think John Lithgow or William Shatner would have been a dream come true, you know, someone with that back and forth good guy-bad guy in a split second acting, but I do like the idea of his counter-part, Spader. Portia de Rossi would also be a good contender (very good character in Better Off Ted). While I do still love Carrey and Ferell, I think they are better suited for "movie" characters. Which ever direction they go, it has to be someone that can actually keep up with the entire cast. Those guys are naturals. Everyone in those characters seem as though thats exactly who they are for real....Love em'!

Given that Carrey has probably contributed to the deaths of countless children due to preventable disease as a result of his anti-vaccination campaign, it would be truly irresponsible for The Office to even consider putting him on the show.

With that being said, I can't WAIT to see Jim Carrey on "The Office". I've loved Jim's work for over 20yrs, ever since "In Living Color" was on the air. He, Gervais & Arnett are hilarious & will definitely make the season finale a memorable one. And all of you morons saying "The Office" isn't funny need to STFU & maybe actually WATCH the show before criticizing it. This season has been pretty much perfect. That sounds like a great line-up for a finale, but it needs to be a SERIES finale. This show already jumped the shark when Pam & Jim finally got together. And just to be more relevant to the topic on hand, these last few episodes, the scenes that Will Farell appears in are awkward at best, forced more often. Carrey would be even worse. Carell sometimes hogs the camera too much but has a pathos and sense of everyman that makes his inappropriate behavior somehow come off okay and sometimes brilliantly. Carrey and Farell are WAY too used to mugging their way through to pull that off. I could see Spader. Some of the other suggestions like Kevin Nealon (really?) or Chris Rock are just ludicrous. Was there ever a less funny stand up comedian than Chris Rock? The Office hinges on Carell and Rainn Wilson providing a gateway from mundane reality to absurdist fantasy. WIlson is unhinged, but Carell's replacement MUST be able to smoothly move between worlds to continue to make this work.

"NO..............not at all. There's Cheers, Mash, Three's Company, and Seinfeld."

And all of them, without exception, dramatically dropped off in quality after the first few seasons. Just go back and watch them in chronological order on DVD or Tivo or whatever format you prefer, and its obvious. In the past, without the technology to view episodes in fairly short intervals, you might not notice, just like you don't notice someone growing old if you see them everyday. Just a "for instance", I LOVED M*A*S*H growing up. But as I watch reruns, I notice things like they stopped "filming" shows and started taping them. It lost it's poignancy and became more like a play. Same thing happened to Happy Days". It was based in large part on the film "American Graffiti" but in the third or fourth year they started taping it, and to me watching in retrospect, it completely changes the tone.

    Dream List of possible candidates:

    John Cusack
    Ryan Reynolds
    Chris Tucker
    Rob Lowe
    Shia Laboeuf
    James Spader

(Of course it doesn't hurt that all of the above are easy on the eyes) ;-)

    Maybe:
    Jon Cryer
    Jonathan Silverman

    Hell No:
    Will Farrell
    Charlie Sheen

Ray Romano would bring in a good crowd if yer lookin for the 80 to 100 year old demographic. Just think of all the adult diaper commercials they could get? Spader can play it anyway they want and still pull it off. Anyone that thinks Jim Carrey isn't funny doesn't know comedy. He has had some bad movies but he didn't write the screen plays which no one can fix after it hits the deadlines. It is physical comedy that he does folks not cerebral . On a side note, since people don't read up the best, Gervais doesn't want a retread of the UK Office, so he is out as the replacement. Will Ferrell is awful to begin with. I don't know much of Spader's work. I would like to see Tate take over.

Carey will bring his (mellowed out) goofiness to the role. His best work was Dumb and Dumberer and then down hill after that.
Will Ferrelll will say alot of nonsense and remind us of how bad he was in Taledega Nights.

this used to be my favorite comedy, and now it is just flat out of steam. i think it is hard for comedies to make it past 5 seasons. it's been downhill since Jan left, because there has been no way to grab that uncomfortable, dark comedy that set the show apart. like Archie Bunker in All in the Family, the writers felt compelled to make Michael more sympathetic, and then the show got less interesting. the dinner party was the peak.

I'd love to see Will Arnett step into the role. He was amazing in Arrested Development, and I think the character he played in that show George Oscar Bluth could be a flawless transition across sitcom medium. I'd love to see Jim Carrey take it over, but I'm sure he'd take too much of the spotlight off the other characters in the show. I do not want Will Ferrell...loved him on SNL, but just not enough substance or versatility to cover the spectrum of the show.

Yes, give Will Arnett the "GOB" he would be amazing on that show, although he might be a bit too much like Andy.

Definitely John Lithgow would be the best replacement if they want the show to run a few more seasons. If they just want to end it after next season, perhaps either David Spade or Ted McGinley!

Actually the show that could completely pull off the mcginley switch is Community. I could totally see mcginley replacing chevy chase for an episode.

All of the choices except Catherine Tate would be safe choices, and would be disastrous for the show. Anyone who have seen The Catherine Tate Show on BBCA would tell you that she would be perfect to take the show in whatever direction it needs to go to get beyond Steve Carrell's leaving. It is always difficult when such a pivotal cast member leaves and trying to replace that person in a similar way has always failed. I hope the producers get it, and hire Catherine Tate because then I'd have a reason to tune in every week.

"The Catherine Tate Show" is fantastic. Catherine Tate is everything that Tracey Ullman was and could never be.

However, I disagree with you. Bringing Chachi in on Happy Days to pal around with the lifelong bachelor Fonzie, shook things up a bit. Bobby Ewing's death season on "Dallas" turning out to be a dream, shook things up a bit. Catherine Tate on "The Office" would only shake things up in a Shaken Baby Syndrome sort of way and end what we know and love as, "The Office". It wouldn't work.

As much as I love Spader, all I can see when I try to picture him is Alan Shore or his character from Secretary (Basically Alan Shore x 10). I just can't see his dark+weird humor on The Office. He's just too subtle and perverse. Maybe he can pull it off, but I think he's just too typecast to be a good fit.

Anyone who saw and was a fan of Spader on Boston Legal should be a fan of him going to The Office. He has the perfect dry comedy talents for that role and clearly can be a solid cog in an ensemble cast based on that show. If not for Shatner's performance in Boston Legal, Spader would have been the star of that show, and that is essentially what Steve Carell had become.

      Dear Hjs,

A couple of quick points. "In Living Color" was about 20 years ago. JC's career has evolved just a little bit since then. I assumed we were all familiar with his history. Before "I.L.C." he was in a short lived sitcom called "The Duck Factory". It was really too short lived and too early in his career to judge his talents back then.

One thing is for sure though. That little "wait for it" bit that you threw in there... Man, that was genius. Comedy gold my friend. I'm not sure which I like better. It's a three way tie between how clever it was, how witty it was and how original it was. It's a tough call but I must say – Well done, my man. Well done! I know when I've been jabbed. "Ouch!"

Forever wanting to be as clever as Hjs,

      The Man
You are obviously more intelligent than I anticipated. I never expected you to pick up on my comedy gold.

While you "assumed we were all familiar with his history", you also said " Jim Carrey is a "spotlight" lead actor. He's not an ensemble cast actor. He would not gel with the rest of the cast as a whole."

These two statements are clearly in disagreement with one another. I understand that my cleverness caught you off guard and you perhaps missed your own contradiction.

Carey is a genius "spotlight" actor and comedian. He was also a genius member of an ensemble cast. I bring up that show, because the previous one you mentioned was not a success, was not what gave him his big break, and not what he is remembered for. You can see pieces of that show in virtually all of his comedy roles. It's his more serious roles (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, Man on the Moon) that demonstrate to me why he should not take this role. Not because he could not, which is preposterous, but that he should not. He is simply better than the role. Carell is leaving because he is better than the role. Candidates like Will Ferrel, while funny, are not better than the role. If Will Arnett gets the role, I will have no choice but to no longer watch the show, as his failed TV show is pretty much the extent of his talent already.

I am officially unclear of what point you’re trying to get across anymore. What I think I can piece together though is that we’re kind of on the same page, however you’re fighting it for some reason. I think, I’m not positive, but I think the reason is that you’re on a quest to “out-do” me here. That’s cool and all but let it be known, you’re in a race all by yourself on this one.

"Jim Carrey is a "spotlight" lead actor. He's not an ensemble cast actor. He would not gel with the rest of the cast as a whole." – How do these statements disagree with one another? They’re pointing out the same thing.

Let me try to dislodge whatever it is that’s jamming up your gears. My basic point is this: Now, in 2011, Jim Carrey of “In Living Color” fame has achieved many accomplishments over his 20+ year career. In that time he has made his undeniable mark in comedy both on screen and television. Whether it was physical comedy or dramatic comedy, he has honed his comedic skills and is truly a great comedic artist. As his career evolved, he has also made a name for himself as a dramatic actor, albeit he sometimes can be lesser known for this work. Regarding his comedy work though, Jim Carrey has, in my opinion, what I would describe as an “all-eyes-on-me” style. It would also be my opinion that this larger than life persona may just be too big for something like “The Office” and it would just not be a good fit.

Forever speaking as slowly and clearly as possible as so I am not misunderstood by some,

      @HJS & The Man
Can there ever be an argument about what Jim Carrey can or cannot do? The only thing he can't do, in my opinion, is win an oscar. He's done everything else. Supervillains, everymen, meek, obnoxius, psychotic, and mostly endearing. I don't think he's required to prove anything. The problem might be is that he's being asked to replace a beloved character. But didn't Carell and Carrey already face off in "Bruce Almighty"? He didn't outshine Carell enough to keep Carell from becoming the star of the sequel. The sequel wasn't as succesful and, surely, replacing the most beloved aspect of the American version of "The Office" will also be unlikely to generate the same affection. I mean, regardless of how succesful and loved Ricky Gervais was, even he probably wouldn't get the same response as Carell in America.
