She won an Oscar for "Chicago" and now Catherine Zeta-Jones is tuning up for another movie musical. The actress has just been cast as a villain in the upcoming film adaptation of Broadway's "Rock of Ages."
Zeta-Jones will play the Los Angeles mayor's wife, a conservative woman who wants to rid the world of rock and roll, Deadline reports. The character does not appear in the stage version of "Rock of Ages" and was created specifically for the movie.
"There are so many plotlines in the piece, we thought it would be fun to create a villain, and a cultural discussion point," director Adam Shankman told Deadline. "She's the moral majority person, kind of like if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child in that era. To have a great actress who won an [Oscar] in this genre with 'Chicago' is wonderful."
Despite playing an uptight character, Zeta-Jones will rock such hits as Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," in the '80s-era musical.
"Rock of Ages" tells the story of small-town girl Sherrie (Julianne Hough), who moves to Hollywood to be an actress. She takes a job at the Bourbon Room, owned by Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin), and catches the eye of Drew (Diego Gonzalez Boneta).
Drew gets Sherrie fired after she has an affair with Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), and she takes a job as a stripper at a gentleman's club owned by Justice (Mary J. Blige). Sherrie eventually gives up exotic dancing to find true love.
"Rock of Ages" is set to begin filming in May.
