After ABC announced on Thursday that it will cancel its long-running soap operas “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” people have reacted with varying degrees of sadness, disappointment and outrage.
The fans are plotting boycotts, former stars are stunned and script writers are feeling a little slighted.
The Writer’s Guild East, which represents movie, TV and news writers, issued a statement expressing "deep disappointment" that “AMC” and “OLTL” are on the way out.
"These groundbreaking shows have provided entertainment and enlightenment to millions of viewers, and have provided good employment to dozens of talented, dedicated writers,” the statement reads. “We urge the company to reconsider."
Kelly Ripa, now co-host of “Live! With Regis and Kelly” (which is going through its own changes), starred as Hayley on “All My Children” for years, along with her now-husband Mark Consuelos.
"This is like losing a member of your family,” Ripa says in a statement. “‘All My Children’ was more than a job.– it was my family. It was there that I met my husband; it was there when my first two children were born; it was there where I met many of my life-long friends. It was the greatest training ground ever. I feel heart sick."
Meanwhile, former “One Life to Live” actor Nathan Fillion tweeted, "A moment of silence for a disappearing genre. OLTL & AMC, we'll miss your hard work and talent."
Although there were whispers that “AMC” was going to get the axe, fan favorite Susan Lucci still sounded hopeful over the past few weeks.
"We'll see," the Daytime Emmy winner said on “Good Morning America” of the speculation. "As long as we have these loyal, passionate fans in our corner - including Oprah [Winfrey], who had us on just a few weeks ago for her final season."
But it looks like not even the devotion of fans (or Oprah) could save Erica Kane.
“It saddens me that ‘All My Children is canceled,’” Lucci tweeted. “I've loved playing Erica Kane and working with Agnes Nixon & the incredible people at AMC.”
