She was a pro at delivering "Saturday Night Live's" "Weekend Update," but can Amy Poehler handle speaking at Harvard? The 2011 graduating class is about to find out.
On May 25, the Massachusetts native will address the students, their families and guests at Senior Class Day in Harvard Yard's Tercentenary Theatre, reports the Harvard Gazette.
Besides Poehler, the ceremony - held the day before graduation - will include a speech by the school's dean, as well as an evening concert featuring the Radcliffe Choral Society, the Harvard Glee Club and the Harvard University Band.
“The speakers in the past two years have been serious newscasters,” says Senior Class Marshal Toby Stein. “Amy did ‘Weekend Update' on 'SNL,' so she's a different kind of newscaster. We're hoping that experience will put a different spin on current events, and give seniors a look at the world we're living in from a different angle.”
More importantly, the students are hoping she will make them laugh.
“We wanted someone people would recognize, who could give a funny and engaging speech,” Stein says of the "Parks & Recreation" star. “During her time on 'SNL,' Amy was a part of our growing up, and there's no doubt that she's pretty hilarious.
"'Mean Girls' is an icon of our generation,” he adds. “We're really excited to have Amy speak on Class Day.”
