While doing the rumba on last night’s “Dancing With the Stars,” Kirstie Alley and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy took a nasty tumble, but the pair didn’t let it slow them down.
As they grooved to the song “Over the Rainbow,” Chmerkovskiy seemed to lose his leg support while holding on to his partner. As he fell, the “Stars” dancer brought Alley down with him.
They both quickly recovered though, and still managed to impress the judges, earning 21 out of 30 points.
Chmerkovskiy later tried to explain that his “thigh just gave out,” apologizing and adding that “it has nothing to do with her," according to People.
The judges were sympathetic, with Bruno Tonioli telling them, "You can't keep good talent down. Once you got up it was better than ever," and Carrie Ann Inaba saying that "sometimes tragedy leads to an amazingly beautiful moment.”
Alley gave her partner credit for their quick recovery, saying, "It was him. I didn't know what to do, and he just said, 'Keep dancing, let's dance.'"
Although the fall drew gasps from the audience and Chmerkovskiy was seen wincing in pain, the dancer insisted to CNN after the show that he was going to be fine.
Said Alley's "DWTS" competition Chelsea Kane, “I think all of us are kind of like in fear of wiping out on the dance floor,” she told CNN. “We all felt for [Kirstie Alley], she handled it beautifully."
