Happy April Fools' Day! Love, The InternetApril Fools' Day is celebrated with great relish online, with entertainment websites and social media being no exception. The U.K.'s Guardian has certainly received a lot of attention today for a fake blog update about the royal wedding: "According to several Tweeters in the King's Cross area, members of the Coldstream Guards in bearskin hats are storming towards the Guardian headquarters," the unfinished update says. "Indeed, right now, we can hear what seems to be numerous people running upstairs towards the newsroom here." But of course, they're not the only ones playing pranks.
The popular TV and movie streaming site Hulu traveled back in time to give us a glimpse of what their site might have looked like in 1996, complete with full episodes of beloved '90s series "The X-Files," "NewsRadio" and "Sliders," not to mention a 15-year-old segment about ATM surcharges from "Good Morning America." (When you watch a video, it even makes the old "dial-up" sound while loading). Last year, Joel McHale "hacked" into his E! "arch-nemesis" Ryan Seacrest's website, so what does one do for an encore? A "hacking" by the "Bronx Zoo Cobra," of course. Stories on the site include "Britney Spears' Albino Python: Where Is He Now?" and "My 5 Favorite Snakes to Play Me in a Movie." Twitter can be a dangerous place on April Fools' Day as well, with fake announcements being made throughout the day. Tom Green went all out, tweeting "news" about himself, such as, "I'm getting back together with my ex wife Cameron Diaz"; "I'm getting my spinal cord removed, attaching four new limbs, and becoming an Octopus. Meeting with Plastic Surgeons today"; and "Justin Bieber is my son." Later, Green disavowed the tweet about Bieber as an April Fools' Day joke, but said that all of the rest were "true." Not to be outdone, ABC announced a "new" lineup of shows including "Mr. Sunsheen," "White Castle," "Grey's Private Anatomy Practice," and "Snookie Blue." @joel clearly you are an idiot.
I loved what was done at the movie news site Film School Rejects. They dedicated their entire homepage to a celebration of Michael Bay's 1998 film Armageddon. It's silly, but a great prank. Most of the Internet news outlets seem to just want to run fake news.
But this is great: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com
