'Idol's' Top 11 redux elimination cuts it down to 9

SPOILER ALERT – Tonight's "Idol" blog will reveal who is leaving the competition, so please don't read if you don't want to know.

We now have gone directly from our Top 11 to our Top 9.

Your thoughts on the two who have been sent home?

I have to say that I expected Naima, but Thia was a bit of a shock. It was a good run for them both though.

I liked the duets, and I think they should do more of that. What a night, and what a competition so far, yes?

Paul Stefano and Jacob need to be sent packing. Paul sounds like a bad Rod Stewart imitator on a good night, Stefano is soundy very "karoke", and Jacob just has not stage presence and I'm just not fond of his vocals. As for the girls....maybe Haley but thats a long shot. But Pia is starting to bug me. She needs to branch out and sing something rockin and stop playing it safe with the ballad bype songs. She has talent...just let us see she has depth as well. Im pretty positive James, Pia, and Casey will be in the top 5 at the end. other than that its a crap shoot.

Stephano "could be a star in Canada"???? I'd be offended if that wasn't so hiLARious. I wish people would stop comparing Stephano to David Archuleta (whose new album "The Other Side of Down" is amazing, btw) ... he might look a little bit like a cross between Archie and Joey from Friends but his vocals (& connection with the song and the audience) don't even come close. ... And I never thought I'd say this, but am missing Simon this season, lol.

The right two got ousted laste night, imo. But now it will be a tough call on who should go. They are all good in their own way. Well, maybe Jacob can go next. A prima-donna trapped in a man's body. Final two girls should be Pia & Lauren. Final two guys should be Paul & Casey. Then it's anyone's game. Oh, and here's hoping Pia lands in the pages of Playboy or Penthouse (or preferrably on the internet).

Whether these were good choices or not, I don't know. What I do know is that it's going to be tough season for eliminations. Each of these youngsters is incredibly gifted; and finding the American Idol is going to be a weekly exercise in tough calls. I've yet to experience a season with so much talent. They're all idols IMHO!

as someone else said, I have THOROUGHLY enjoyed all the comments. it's like chatting w/co-workers about last nite's AI episode. the whole "who's mike" thing was the funniest of all and the "race card" comments kept popping up at weird times. i love reading these blogs aloud to my husband using the tones i think the writer intended. try it, it's hilarious fun! but i think out of all the posts, i agree w/Chamdexor so far, except i happen to hate jacob's voice and wish he would either cough it up or swallow it. and haley puts me in mind of the annoying 7 yr old that your sister/aunt/et al forces you to listen to sing. "SomeWHERE OVA THA RAINBOOW!" (anyone remember Lil Magick off of In Living Color?!)
great fun everyone; keep up the snarky comments! and an aside, one should NEVER sing about any fattening food items when one looks as if they have consumed too many of said items! "boy, yo love is better than a plate of FAT BACK and HOG MAWS!"

OMG! Some of the people on here just don't get it. I wonder if they're actually watching the show!! Yes, A.I., is a singing contest. But, America is looking for a singer, performer and an artist combined. It's ALL about selling records afterwards. I've been watching A.I. from the 1st season. RACE???? C'mon! Get a grip!! It has NOTHING to do with it!! As others have stated, "minorities" have won several times; which completely invalidates your point. Should Thea and Naima have gone home last night? Absolutely! Should Paul have been in the bottom 3, instead of Stefano? Maybe not. But who will win? It depends on America's voters; and what genre they prefer really. So who do I "think" will be the top 4? Pia, Scotty, Casey and Lauren. But, who knows what America will do. The talent pool this year is the best ever!! Each one has their niche and will most likely be successful in the music biz; if they want to be. I agree with the posts about only allowing one vote per person though. That, to me, is the most fair way to determine who stays and who goes. Anyway, this season is exceptional. I've always been a huge fan of Steve Tyler; but I think he needs to become more critical and find a new adjective; other than "beautiful" lol.. (Sorry Steve! Love you man!!)

Paul should have gone home...I don't know who told that guy he could sing...he is a Rod Stewart wanna-be the problem is Rod Stewart could sing on key and carry a tune. This guy can't even carry a melody and sounds like one of the chipmonks from Alvin and the Chipmonks. He may be in a band outside of AI but I would be willing to wager that they are not employed much and he is not the lead singer of the group. I have to change the channel as soon as he starts to sing and leap around because he makes me nausious....the ones thinking he can sing on here have to be absolutely tone-deaf..YUK!

I've enjoyed reading all of your comments.

Thia had to go. She has a lovely voice, but she doesn't fill a room with emotion, and doesn't sell a song. Her gestures are the same every time she sings. I am surprised the coaches didn't teach the girl some moves.

Naima is beautiful and exotic looking, but her performances have been consistently weak. She has great presence and is exciting to watch. Maybe if Thia coached her on her singing, she could have returned the favor by teaching Thia to dance and emote. Just a thought.

Scotty has a deep rich tone and the confidence to sell a song. No doubt there is a record deal waiting for him at the end of all of this.

Jacob seems like he is trying to channel Mihalia Jackson with every performance. Technically proficient, but he over ornamentalizes every song. Pull it back dude, you've been appearing like a drag queen.

Stefano has technique, but he has a very unpleasant tone to his voice, and he has problems sustaining some notes. He did better connecting with the audience the other night, but he can't last much longer.

Lauren is cute and very confident on the stage for one so young. I didn't like her at first, but the more she pulls back and sings balads, the more I can hear that she has a great voice. As a very astute earlier poster mentioned, she needs to connect the lyrics with her facial expressions. No smiling during intense balads!

Haley has improved. She has been pitchy in the past, and lacked confidence. The other night, however, she hit her "triple axel" – she moved better, she beamed confidence and she purred and growled in the right places.

Paul has a really interesting voice, but with each performance he gets weaker. He is on his way out, I think.

Pia is beautiful and is technically proficient. Many men (and probably many women) lust for her. I think she is a bit hollow – she doesn't connect for me. She hits notes, she flaunts flourishes, she displays power, but she is boring. Gorgeous, but boring.

James can do power balads, but he seems to prefer metal. I don't like his sound, I can't imagine who his audience is, but I don't deny he has some talent.

Casey has lots of talent, but I can't imagine that he will end up in the top 2. He just doesn't fit the profile. Also, can't imagine a young audience buying his stuff.

Naima was fun but not the most talented (I like black people, unlike some folks on this blog) and Jacob is holding his own, so leave him alone. Casey... PLEASE GO HOME! When I hear him my head fills with images of the 1920's, Jimmy Durante (The Schnozz). What were the judges thinking when they used their only save on this guy?!

This will be another one of those seasons where the current front-runners fall behind in the end. In other words, right now Pia, Scotty, and Lauren are way out in front, but by the end it'll be something totally unexpected, like Stephano, Haley, and Jacob. The past 3 seasons the underdog or dark horse ended up winning, and I really think it will happen again. We just don't see it right now. An unlikely person will surge to the front of the pack in the coming weeks, mark my words.

She's absolutely at the front of the pack. Large portions of America love a blond country singer who is halfway decent. She's no Carrie Underwood, but she's good enough. And she's not one of MY favorites, but she has an enormous fan base.

    My take:

Scotty- Exit stage right please. Yes you can sing country. So please carry on your merry way so you can make your country album and country fans can buy it. But please don't make me watch another 8 weeks of you tilting your head left while the microphone tilts right and then after the chorus, tilt your head right as you shift the mike left.

Paul- Why the hate? I dig him. He's not who you'd hear 'in da club', but he's who I'd listen to in the background gabbing with my friends and drinking wine. My favorite.

Jacob- Yes you can sing. No I would never buy your album. Lighten up dude. Try not to seem as though you're about to convulse when you sing.

James- You have good tone. But I can't seem to get over the image of a white suburbanite sitting in the living room with dirty tube socks on watching WWF Saturday mornings and then going into your bedroom sticking a bandana on your head watching yourself sing into a brush pretending you're a rock star. I'm not convinced you're truly rebellious- anti-establishment and instead think you're an wanna-be rock star with a very good voice. Adam truly was alternative- no pretending.

Casey- Very talented. Not as good with the rock songs, but fantastic with the blues. And I would also listen to your album while dining with friends.

Stephano- Pretty good when he doesn't have to hit some high notes. Decent enough to make a record.

Pia- Beautiful and boring. Yes, she can sing and yes she's a Celine-Whitney-Barbara type. And no, I would never go to see her perform in Vegas either. Lighten up lady.

Lauren- She's growing on me. I like her. I prefer the songs she sings with restraint and control. I do not like when she's singing a serious song and smiling. I did not like the other week when she sang "I'm the Only One" where the lyrics are begging this person and she's smiling away. Listen to the lyrics and act accordingly. Otherwise good job.

Haley- Pretty much think she's okay. Like the growl- but don't over do it. And don't dance. Not good stage presence- more flailing than anything.

I thought the same thing about Lauren when she was singing I'm the Only One – she wasn't even paying attention to the tortured lyrics while she was doing her stupid beauty pageant smile. Really annoying. This is what happens when they let 16 year olds in though, they lack the maturity to put the proper emotion in a song.

Talent hasn't matter for years in music, business the work place or anywhere. Just the color of your skin and if you can get a good lawer. I'm black so I should win. I'm black so I should get the job, Im black so you have to hire me or give me something. I hope she has a career but I don't think she fits in with the AI profile. That's probably why Adam Glambert didn't win last year – not the AI profile. But he is a huge talent and has done quite well. What's sad is that AI chooses to narrow it down to 12 boys and 12 girls, instead of just picking the best 24 people. Clearly, this is the boys' year. By forcing 12 girls in, some boys lost spots in favor of lesser talented girls. In AI's quest to be fair, they failed.

Overall I'm enjoying AI this year and think the judges have done a pretty good job. Wasn't surprised by those that have been kicked off so far, and if not now, would have gone eventually, as none of them had that "star" quality. Of those that are left, I think it will be Pia, James and Scotty, as the last three remaining. I like the other singers, but they lack that something special in order to win.

Gord, to my knowledge at least three AI winners have been people of color – Reuben, Fantasia, and Jordin. LMK if I'm forgetting anyone. Two of the judges (first Randy and Paula and now Randy and J-Lo) are ppl of color). One of the most successful idol alum of all time is Jennifer Hudson, who was way more talented than Fantasia – but losing AI was the best thing that ever happened to her. The only person this season who I believe was booted out of xenophobia is Karen. Ashthon was a tone-deaf diva, Naima was pitchy (though interesting), and Thia, well, the judges have not been fair to her at all this season, and America listened. And if you are counting the Italians as non-white then Casey, who is almost certainly of Jewish descent, is not "white" either. That leaves you with Paul, James, Haley, Jacob and Lauren. Jacob is talented but oversings like mad, and swallows his notes in the lower registers. If he can restrain himself into moderation, he stands a chance. If not, he's out. Neither Haley nor Paul will win, which leaves James or Lauren, both of whom would be legitimate winners based on their talent and marketability (though Lauren needs to step it up). If either of them won I don't think you could blame it on racism. The only person who got screwed by racism was Karen; she was never going to win, but should be on the tour and had no business going home before Stephano and Paul.

Its as if the public is voting whichever way JLo tells them to... Pia is a BORE and Casey isnt very good – at least compared to Naima and Thia

Naima is a true original , and Thia has a great voice and range (altho imho she is only 1 step up from boring us to death like Pia).

I know the result shows are always the worse to watch, and thank goodness for DVRs, but last night's show was worse than usual.
    1) what was up with that ridiculous intro? the piano plinking away with the ominous text? I Iactually replayed it on the DVR to double check if it was as dumb as I thought it was...
    2) the duet with Jacob and Naima was painful to watch. Naima can't sing and Jacob was, as usual, overly dramatic. Again, thank goodness for the DVR.
    3) and what's up with the sound of the show? The Will I Am and what's-his-name performance sounded horrible. And During Haley's performance the night before, it sounded "loungey", the band and musical arrangement didn't match what Haley was trying to do with the song – but the judges loved it? I wonder if there is a sound problem so TV viewers aren't hearing everything (all the instruments) that the in-person audience and judges hear. The sound "professionals" on that show need to step it up and listen to the TV broadcasts to figure out what's going on. Other shows have figured it out, why can't AI?

I think that Pia has got the best voice hands down.I agree that she needs to sing something up tempo.James has got the it factor. He will do well as a rock singer.Paul sounds like Rod Stewart and I like that. But he doesn't sound good on some songs.Lauren has got a great voice and could make a hit record right now. She's a little too dingy for me though.Stephano has got a good voice but he doesn't know how to use it.Jacob has a good voice also but he needs to show case it more.Haley reminds me of some night club singer.Casey has got some real talent ,especially when he plays his instruments.I think that he needs to clean himself up a bit more but that's just my opinion. Now,let's get to Naima and Thia......Naima has talent but she could use a little training with her voice.Besides James, she was the only one that showed any energy on stage.at least her performances were entertaining.Thia...she has a beautiful voice but it is too soft. And her songs were boring.I really haven't seen any talent this year that has knocked my socks off so to speak. They are really gonna have to up their game to keep me interested.Oh ,I almost forgot about Scotty. He has only got one talent and that is that he can hit the low notes. And that is getting old.I think that it is time for him to go.

Scotty will end up being the biggest success of them all, selling more cd's than any of the others regardless if he wins or not. Country fans are more loyal to their favs and stick by them for years. I am sure they are already writing songs for his first release and producers can't wait til the tour is over to get his career started. He will be on the charts for decades.

Agreed. And I'm not country fan. If/when he gets voted off, I'm sure there are producers and writers already waiting for him in Nashville. Add a few more years of maturity and he'll have a huge following.

First, I loved the use of duets and small groups singing last night. It pits one against the other and allows their voice to really compare against the other contestants. Lauren surprisingly won big time last night over Scotty. Naima and Jacob were a toss up where both deservingly should be tossed out(well one down, one to go). Pia definately outshown her 2 compadres and James was the standout of the "Band on the Run" (which didn't work at all... too much diversity in the style of their voices).
    @John.... 11 go on tour
And why was Chris Allen not singing instead of Fantasia (she was so good on her season but has only put out 1 somewhat decent song since).

I agree with Viking (at the very top) – they got the bottom three right. And Finally, Thia and Naima go home! Paul and Jacob need to be next:
Naima: "I'm Still Standing" – Ugh! That was AWFUL. She didn't sing it well and making that song a reggae song was just wrong. At least JLo and Randy gave some honest feedback, but Steven, once again, was just a cheerleader- and a useless judge. And then the producers totally sabotaged her when they show Jimmy Lovine telling her she should dedicate the song to all who are struggling – so it looked completely insincere and fake when she did it on stage – if I was her, I would be wondering What The Heck??

Paul: "Rocket Man" – this is one of my favorite all time songs. And Paul blew the chorus! The chorus needs to be strong with that song, and Paul did his soft whispery voice and "faded" in spots and was pitchy. Paul has the wrong voice to do this song – it was bad.

Thia: "Daniel" – ENUNCIATE! She never sang the consonants at the end of the verses (which is also a cheat when they fall behind the band). AND it was boring and she always sounds like she's singing in a pageant – no soul or zing. The "dedication" to her brother was totally fake and garbage.

Jacob: "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" – bleh. And same as Thia – ENUNCIATE! Was he auditioning for a Broadway play?? He was WAY too dramatic and looked like he was going to cry during the song – way over the top (the song is supposed to be melancholy and introspective – not sad and sappy like its the end of the world). Jimmy Lovine said he worried about Jacob being too dramatic with the song – and he was right. I have to force myself to watch this guy perform now. His stage acting/mannerisms are now completely negating his good vocals. He'll be a good background singer someday.

Essentially you are trying to play down the point that person was making with your sarcastic tone correct?
I am sure that you know what it is like to have racism put in your face daily whether you like it or not. This is why you are able to understand the ridiculousness of making the statement that race could have played a part in Americans decision. I am sure that's the case.

I'm not entirely sure why people are upset about Thia going home. America got two of the bottom three right last night... they should have traded Paul for Stefano. Paul may not be the best, but Stefano sounds like he's singing into a box fan on high. His voice isn't pleasant, and I don't understand how he keeps lucking through!

Thia may have had a nice voice, but America wants to see charisma and she's too young for that. Her version of "Daniel" may have been alright, but she doesnt have the life experience to really sing any song from her soul. Lauren either, but Lauren's voice is strong enough to make up for that... Thia's wasnt.

My guess for the top five are: Scotty, James, Pia, Jacob, and Casey. I think Stefano will go home next (fingers crossed!) followed by, Haley, then Paul then Lauren.

I dont know who will be in the finally yet, but something is telling me Scotty and James.... its too early to be confident about that, though!

Prediction: We are soon to discover that Seacrest can sing! He's going to do a duet with Pia at the end of the season finale. Then shock America by kissing her. The producers are gonna go to commercial real fast. When we come back from commercial the theater will be empty except for the judges who will close out the season with a special message. Then he's gonna quit his radio show and we'll see photos of Seacrest and Pia on a yacht off the coast of Cannes. But they won't last. J-Lo is the only one offering somewhat legit critiques but she goes soft too often (like most women). Steven Taylor (as Stevie Wonder called him) is a bit too spaced out to offer real critism but at least he's funny at times. Casey has become laughable at best. The country singer gets worse and worse and more irritading each week. And that stupid, flowered suit wearing, Rod Stewart/Lady Antebellum wannabe beanpole couldn't get a gig singing at a Best Westen lounge in the sticks if his life depended on it. So glad rasta mama wannabe from Wisconsin is gone...(yeah, lots of Caribbean influence there!) She needs to get back home and smoke some doobs with her rastaman boyfriend. Dreadlocks mon! Or maybe she can do a duet with Jason Castro snging "The harder they come". And Pia , mama mia! Girl fine but so OLD sounding for this show. Maybe she should sing "Evergreen" or "Where the boys are". Well what can i say...Idol is NOT really a singing contest...it just plays one on TV. My case in point is why networks have now came up with a show called The Voice where you don't even see the singer you just listen as if you were hearing them on the radio or on a CD. Idol judges and American voters are influenced too much by appearences. If they want a total package as an "artist" (voice, looks, stage presence etc.) then how could Kris Allen ever have won?
Now about last night...finally we got rid of Naima and poor Theia (was just too young too hang with this years crop) and sadly we'll have another week to listen to weakling Paul whisper/sing and the way over due to go home Stefano.
Then we can send James home screaming with a copy of Adam Lamberts Cd as a parting gift to hear how it's really done and of course we'll have to endure Scotty country-ize another pop song as he freaks us out with those weird facial looks into the camera. PIa is already the winner with Jacob as a close second and both have record deals waiting. PIA is the best singer IF this were a singing contest with Jacob on her heels.
BUT the big topic for me was the untalented guest last night!!! Oh my God Fantasia sqeaking Collards n Cornbread and looked as though she'd been having way too many but worse was Jamie Foxx (whom i've never heard sing well ever!) hooked up with another talentless so called singer Will I Am??? Awful is not a bad enough word to describe how off key and weak they were. This is why real talent cannot be heard these days because it has been taken over by popular celebrities who cannot carry a tune and must rely on vocal enhancers with a built in key controller to even make thier voices passable (and still not even close to good). Very, very, SAD!

I believe the main difference in what the judges tell Pia vs Scotty is that Pia almost always sings ballads, or "pagent type" songs. While Scotty may always sing country style, the tempos change. The style of performance is different than the song type. I enjoy Scotty's performances, and I am definately not a country music fan. I appreciate the quality of his voice. I am not terribly impressed with Casey, but the judges seem to like him. I really don't enjoy Jacob's performances, his voice sounds forced and harsh. I have found myself smiling when Paul performs, as there is a raw quality to it. I know many will disagree with me, but that is why we all get to vote. James' songs are entertaining, as are some of Hailey's. Don't know who should win, but what a lovely group of distinct voices and entertainers we are watching. Good luck to all of them.

Naima was the least polished. It's clear she's never had vocal lessons. She has a nice sound, but no controll. At first I thought she looked strange. As the show went on, I noticed with some polish she was very attractive and could have a future. Because she is the least trained, her upside is huge. I don't get the judges with Pia. She could be another Katherine McPhee: looks great, sounds ok, but boring and will not sell records.

Scotty is going to make money no matter what. He is the only one on that show right now that could cut a hit record. All the folks cheering for Pia wouldn't even download her record.

Naima is the least talented and least polished AI had on the show this season, and needed not to have been one of the judges 3 wild cards. She flubbed from the get go, and each time the judges saved her or America saved her she continued to get worst and some one else paid the price, thank God no one did last night. As for Scotty, that kid can sing only one note and that's low, he'll have his 15 minutes of fame over soon, once he's finished touring with AI he'll do his talk shows and his glory days will be behind or he'll be someone's opening act and then poof, he'll be a has been at the ripe old age of what 17 or 18?

Well Pork and Beans, it obvious you know little about music if you think Scotty can sing just one note. The guys has great range and control. The fact that he is only 17 means he will get much better. His voice is still developing. He could also get taller too. Naima has more talent than she has ability right now. She would benefit from a vocal coach. Folks like Pia and Thia have been coached for some time. It's boring. You can tell the way Pia holds her head back that she's been in some beauty pageant. Problem with Pia is she's starting to believe the hype and is becoming a little diva like. Folks will turn on her. I predict she will not win and could go out before top three.

Missy, Scotty has not done a performance where he has not ended with that lame low note, he has always done country and we all know that the style of country he's chosen has been "old school" and that's been with a slow drawl, he's NOT ONCE hit a high note, has never sounded "pitchy" b/c how can you if you sing the same slow drawl, doesn't sing and move around like the rest of the contestants in order to have to worry about sounding winded or off key the list goes on and on. The kid has only one talent, he can sing slow country drawl in a low baratone note, he has one schtick and will always be remembered for "baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low".

Jacob sings well, but you've gotta look comfortable while you do it.

Casey is the most talented musician in the group if he would just have fun with it he'll impress anyone. (Bring out the melodica!)
Haley, sorry you can't growl EVERY NOTE. It gets old very fast. Judges please stop encouraging it, it gets worse every week.

I know Thia is only 16, but the girl can't make eye contact and without that, her performances were empty and boring. I agree with an earlier post – Jacob is kind of creepy. I don't get his appeal AT ALL. All that screeching and giving us those weird 'come hither' looks – makes me shudder. I'd really like to see Casey get rid of more beard – maybe do the goatee or similar thing. And take the wardrobe up a notch from corduroys and a hoodie – a leather jacket, maybe. I think Paul is quirky and I kind of like him. Why was Stefano chosen over some of the others – like, Kendra? Pia is all polish, and when you start out that way, it's hard to show real progress – she needs to expand her music selections (maybe she can help Casey with some polish?). Lauren is young, but I think she'll develop nicely and do alright – if Kelly Pickler can be successful, then Lauren can too – think Lauren's got more upstairs. Scotty stays true to himself, and good for him. As so many have already said, he's got a country contract coming and if you like country, you'll like him. James has grown on me. Didn't really like him much at first, but he's willing to take some risks (Pia, are you paying attention?). And I think you need to do that (think Adam Lambert) to do well in the music business. Haley has some spunk and once she gets free of Idol, she should get some vocal coaching and use her spunk to create a fun career for herself.

So where was Sir Elton John ?
This week's song choice was his songs but no appearance – why was that ? (and before people start stating he was already booked with SNL – where talking about Idol – the number one show on TV).
So who did they have – Jamie Foxx and Will-I-Am singing something about Rio and Fantasi – can't stand her singing, really can't stand her singing......

I get it if you don't like Fantasia's style. Not everybody likes country or rock. But Fantasia has one of the best voices to ever come out of Idol. She is still Simon's favorite. I'm not into country, but I recognized the beauty in Scotty's voice. I could tell Carrie Underwood could sing. Fantasia gets more respect from her peers (other musicians) than any other Idol. She was invited to sing for Sir Elton at the Kennedy Center Honors. Girl has mad talent. I don't like the look she was sporting, but the voice – awesome.

@Missy big deal Fantasia was invited to sing for Sir Elton, but she was not invited to sing for HER idol was she? Fantasia is what us white southerners would call other white ppl poor white trailer trash, only she won AI and got millions of dollars, and just b/c she won those millions don't mean you can't take the trash out of her. (and yes I know she's black) Her voice is horrendous, her style is horrendous, and her life is atrocious. If Simon messed up on anything with American Idol and his choices it would be Fantasia. Jennifer Hudson beat her out in Dream Girls, and is probably more recognizable and notable than she is, and I'd be willing to bet that Simon is regretting backing and pushing Fantasia.

Naima was no surprise. She's beautiful but played the black vote too much. The majority of the voters I think are the granny voters: white, middle class, stay-at-homes. Scotty is good but no range, Lauren has more range but needs more stage presence. Paul is BORING. Jacob, incredible talent and a bright future but needs to come out of the gospel singer box and cross over into the main stream. Casey, definitely out of the box but won't sell records. I love him but another Hicks who I also loved. Stefano, couple weeks at best. James the rocker is another Jacob, stuck in the box. Won't win AI but will sell records ... a bunch. The final 2: Pia & Haley. Pia is the odds on favorite right now with all the right tools with a stunning stage presence. Haley will become the Most Improved. What is missing? Who is selling the most downloads on iTunes? So far I've bought the whole album the last 2 weeks because the talent is that good this year. Last year I bought mostly Crystal Bowersox and she didn't win. I forget who did. There should be a concession for most downloads each week.

    • Missy

Actually Niami didn't play the black vote. She did very little R&B. She played the "Island vote" which is so niche that most people watching just couldn't get into. I am confused about the judges comparing Pia to Whitney, Mariah, Celine Dion? I don't hear it at all. That girl is boring and better show she can move and do something else. It's mostly pre-teen and teen white girls voting on Idol. The middle-aged white women vote on Dancing With the Stars. That is why young white guys like Stefano last longer than they should, even if they are horrible. And also why we end up with that boring guy who won over Adam Lambert. Who won last year?

Even some of the stuff the judges come up with are totally ridiculous (they must be tone deaf or something is going on in that milieu that we can not hear)..........much less you idiots.

Here's whats really telling........I believe without exception.......all the "strong vocal" AI contestants are the ones selling records and making money. The "unique".......the "raspy".......the "performer".......the "always screaming rocker".....the wanna be "Motown Crooner"........the yodel singer that wants to be country but has no voice..........all that stuff the judges are always begging for.........THEY DON"T SELL RECORDS or make money!

Naima was exciting and original–not qualities appreciated in shows like this. Paul has to go. Poor thing, he is good looking, but simply cannot sing. I was glad to see Naima go tonight. She's sweet n'stuff but gah..she can't hold her notes at all. As for Paul>..wow...ok so Rod Stewart-like he may be, and I see the similarity..what bothers me about him is he seems to always stay in a small range of notes, and wisps them out....I don't think the guy can really carry a tune, and I think if you put him on the spot and asked him to sing the notes of an octave, he couldn't do it and hold the notes. I think he's there on a smile and looks, but usually that gets salted out in the end. The remaining 8 have some true talent, so it'll be interesting to see who America votes for in the end. Hard to choose at this point (not counting Paul).

Agreed – race comment was silly. Was going to respond to them, but decided to be positive and agree with you instead. The show has represented minorities rather heavily throughout – Even two black winners over 10 seasons is 20% rate and African Americans make up 13% of the population at this time. Much of the minority talent is so good that they go straight to recording and bypass Idol altogether. Judges: half way to a rainbow

i don't exactly agree with the race card THIS TIME, either...but calling on jennifer hudson as an example would more so prove her point, not yours......When Jennifer was eliminated, it was said to spark racial questions, even by Elton John who called the show "racist". She wasn't a winner...although that season Fantasia did win. All in all, the top 3 that yr should've been 3 black females, but two of them were elimanated early and somehow (maybe because of the sob rags to riches story) Fantasia made it through and beat out 2nd best...

Jacob – too much mouth distortion while singing – will find his niche in cd, but not a winner
Naima – expressive, but not powerful enough, sometimes off key, fake jamake? gone
Thia – sweet, soft voice, too soft – listen to her though – very mature voice – gone but will be famous – gone
Paul – raspy, raspy, can only really sing about 6 different notes with any clarity – soon adios
James – a bit exaggerative for a rocker, if that's possible, but actually hits the notes and performs- top 2 or 3
Haley – growler and prowler – she is on her way out, but will have a cd – toothpaste commercial with paul
Scotty – milking the low tone – little diversity otherwise, even in country – will have cd, but soon gone
Casey – servives because of halo effect, people drinking cool aid – he is smoke and mirrors – should have been gone
Lauren – naive, innocent, fragile – if she comes out of shell she will blow pipes to top 3
Stefano – sweet kid – would be a star in Canada – good to mediocre vocals – broadway – soon gone
Pia – hands down the best singer on the show. Already Pro! Makes rest look like little girls and boys – WINNER!

If you listen to the studio version of all the artists you can hear a difference in the live vs. studio voices. If a contestant can't produce a good studio version I don't see how they can continue through the live shows without being voted off? That being said, I am thinking of Jacob. His studio versions are not great but he seems to be liked by the judges and getting through on what I think are mediocre vocals. I am by no means a good singer and definately couldn't do better. But I know a good voice when I hear one. I think he is next to go. And I think Pia is in danger too – she is the best singer at th emomnet, but th others are improving week-on-week and showing versatility, she doesn't seem to be 'progressing' – like Melinda Dolitle (name?) who was hte best in her season but got knoked out in hte final 5 (I think from memeory).I'd like to see Scotty win, even though he is very one deminsional as well – he wil go a long way with the right writers and producers, and I am sure the country world is lining up to work with him

I agree! Naima and Thia needed to go. Both are talented but not as talented as the others. Same with Paul. We've watched for years and love the show. This year I think there is a lot more talent than last year, especially the guys.

why is everyone on naima, at least she's not cookie cutter and boring. i'm an idol fan but the contestants this year are so boring i still don't remember their names. the country guy and lauren need to go, they're just country music tokens he's boring and she's so generic. the rest are ok to look at but will soon fade into oblivion. (except pia, she's a star!) casey needs to go. there will be another casey next year.

Yes, derek, he is good at what he does–country music. That's what he sings and all he wants to sing. When his career takes off, he will not have to sing Motown or Elton John, etc.; he will sing country. That doesn't make him a one trick pony–it makes him a dedicated country music singer.

A.I. talent winners are chosen from vocal talent. Naimi, maybe had good stage presence but poor vocals (probably could not sing a ballad to save her life). She is very happy just to make the traveling show tour (earn about $250k). Thia very young at 16yrs old. Has talent but not good range in the various categories of music. Very little if any stage prresence or "magic". I would not go pay to hear her sing invidually (good Kareoke vocals) . I believe the winner will have both stage presence, personality and "mad vocals" that actually can "move" an audience. -- I'll keep voting until the last day. Remember, "it is what it is...." If they are truely talented then they will be successful ala' Adam Lambert, Cooke and Aiken...... Peace!

Ugh, I can't believe Thia is gone! She has a nice tone to her voice but I must admit, she just chose the wrong song! She had so much potential...oh well. As for everyone loving Pia, I don't get her at all. She always seems like she's struggling for air when hits those high notes. I have been "listening" to these contestants (yes, I purposely close my eyes when they're singing) and I must say, Pia is nowhere close to what everyone is saying. She's not that great.

I agree! Close your eyes and listen to all of them. It makes a big difference. Pia is completely overrated. Her voice is thin on top; she is barely holding on to the notes. She does not have a unique song, but she would be well suited for cruise ships, and this is not a slam to cruise ship singers. She does not charm. She could not do Broadway. Did you notice how she was out of breath during her up-tempo trio last night? She's a one-trick pony.

Figure they would put Lauren in to boost Scotty up with the vocals. Anyone NOT see Naima going had to be blind as a bat and or deaf as Helen Keller, or a family member. As for Thia, she was going to go either tonight or next week, too many people saw her as boring, although vocally she was one of the, if not the best last night. Why oh why are y'all keeping Scotty, you know he's got a record deal once he steps off the AI stage. I am surprised that Haley wasn't in the bottom 3 instead of Paul though, just based on the what I've read in the past blogs in here.

As for Naima, she got booted off because she is just "too African", come on, admit it, this country still is hung up on RACE, god forbid a black person win 'American' Idol, right? Yeah, America we'll show them. What a friggin' JOKE this country is. And what a stupid show AI has become. @ Jules, last time I checked AI was a show for all races, and everybody is allowed to vote. Naima tried to hide the fact that she couldn't cut the mustard vocally by dancing around like she sat on a thumbtack, plus she looked like the female Gremlin from "Gremlins 2". Just because your favorite got sent home, the whole country sucks and everybody is racist. What a shallow minded fool. Well, get on the boat and go somewhere that suits you.

I think AI is wrong in bringing down the age limit to 15. If anyone hasn't seen Thia's performances (pre-idol) in Youtube (America's Got Talent and David Foster's concerts), it is very far from her AI performances. I think she lost confidence and got overwhelmed by all the pressure.

Are you kidding me? Race has nothing to do with it! Niama was lucky to be in the top 11 when you look at who she was with on that stage. If you would have put her on last season then she could have had a chance, and I am white and I vote for Jacob every week, because that Big Queen is great! It's so funny that every time someone black goes home someone pulls out the race card! I for one do not think that people that vote for AI think about race when they make there choice, it has to do with the voice, look and how they work the stage and yes also just because they like a person. Niama was all over the place with her roots in Africa, or sorry Jamaica, or what I am confused now! She did not know who she was, and she did not have the chops to be there and this is why she is home now.

It is called "AMERICAN IDOL" a singing contest yes, but the winner needs the whole package. Singing and the ability to bring the audience into their performance. Naima can do that but she is not a great singer, Thia is a great singer, but she has not stage presence – Boring to watch. Pia also has a great voice but she continue to perform like she is in the Miss America Pageant, she really needs to start performing for the audience or people are going to get bored with her. Stephano, needs to go, he is just another David Archuleta -and what has he done lately? I would like to see Scotty win, I think he would be very successful.

The only problem I have with this show is that it's more a popularity contest than a real talent contest. I've said from the start that the judges should pick who leaves the show up until there are 5 left. This way you're pretty much guaranteed a "reputable" star/winner to the show. Prime example was on tonights elimination. I don't know who told Mike he could sing....omg, this guy sounds like he's inhaled helium-he sounds like a girl. This reminds me of a few years ago with Sanjaya and the show doesn't need that to happen again. Anyways, Naima was far superior to Mike and so was Thia. America once again is proving that Idol isn't a talent show...it's a popularity contest. All you have to do is look at past winners and who of them you hear about in the press/media. Carrie and Kelly are well known in the industry but everyone else is hardly ever heard from/about. I commend Idol on the great changes they've made this year but now it's time for the American public to "get with it". As for the "mansion"....call Ghost Hunters....Jay and Grant can take care of that little problem. :)

Naima is great in the studio but just below average live; Thia is boring; Ashton was horrible; Karyn was better during auditions and the sneaker guy had already peeked during auditions...he strains just to sing a normal song...what happens when he's given a power ballad...his voice is thin and he's more of a choir or group singer than solo....

Haley should have been in the bottom 3 with the other 2 before Paul. He sounds like Rod Stewart and the others just don't have it going on at all.
