Hotshot actor Chris Hemsworth is getting a little too big for his britches — or at least his superhero costume.
The "Thor" star says he packed on so much muscle to play Marvel's hammer-wielding warrior that he couldn't fit into his crime-fighting clothes.
"I got the part and immediately started looking at the comic books, and the guy is 500 pounds or something and looks like Schwarzenegger," the Aussie actor, whose film hits theaters on May 6, tells the L.A. Times. "And I thought, 'OK, I'm not gonna get to that. But I have to get bigger.'"
And so Hemsworth began bulking up.
"[The filmmakers] kept saying 'Yeah, get as big as you can, as big as you can,'" he says. "And then I came back right before Christmas, just before we started the movie, and had a final sort of camera test and put the costume on and within a couple of minutes, my hands started going numb. And everyone was like, 'Yeah, that's not cool.' And I started getting pins and needles and you'd touch the skin and the blood wouldn't return to that area so quick. And I thought, 'OK, it doesn't fit.'"
Ultimately, Hemsworth's attire was altered for a better fit and director Kenneth Branagh also advised him to ease up on his workouts. Still, it won't be long before Hemsworth is back in the gym: He'll reprise his role as Thor for next year's superhero ensemble "The Avengers."
"I'd rather do this than sort of put on unhealthy weight," he says of his exercise regime. "I think that'd be harder to lose and probably be enjoyable putting it on, because you could eat whatever you want."
