As if New York didn't have enough problems with roaches and rodents — now it's infested with Smurfs! That's the concept behind the upcoming 3-D movie starring the little blue beings, set for release this summer.
In the just-released trailer for "The Smurfs," mysterious blue lights are seen flashing in the Manhattan sky as a news anchor reports there is not yet an explanation for the phenomenon. But the answer becomes obvious when a box arrives at the home of Patrick Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris) and his wife Grace (Jayma Mays). Inside: a bunch of Smurfs!
Patrick and Grace freak out, believing that the Smurfs are evil. "Do not be fooled by their cuteness!" he warns his wife, who soon discovers that the Smurfs are a bunch of softies. "They're friendly," she tells him.
The rest of the trailer features the mischievous mythical creatures getting up to all kinds of high jinks, including falling into a toilet, getting chased by a dog and being pursued throughout the Big Apple by the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and his cat Azrael.
Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry) even has her own "Seven Year Itch"-inspired Marilyn Monroe moment, but instead of a subway grate, it's a heating vent that causes her white dress to billow up around her.
"The Smurfs," which also features the voices of Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Paul Reubens as Jokey Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf and Fred Armisen as Brainy Smurf, is set to hit theaters on August 3.
