One person not cheering recent Oscar winner Natalie Portman? Mike Huckabee.
The Fox News Channel host has criticized the "Black Swan" star for being pregnant and unmarried.
"One of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children,' and they're doing just fine,'" Huckabee told radio host Michael Medved on Monday. "But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie."
Huckabee believes Portman is presenting a distorted image with her pregnancy. "Not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses," he says. "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock."
In her best actress acceptance speech, Portman thanked fiancé Benjamin Millepied, "who choreographed the film, and has now given me my most important role of my life." Medved told Huckabee that Millepied "didn't give her the most wonderful gift, which would be a wedding ring! And it just seems to me that sending that kind of message is problematic."
Update, 2:11 p.m.: CNN has received the following statement from Huckabee in regards to his earlier comments about Natalie Portman.
"In a recent media interview about my new book, A Simple Government, I discussed the first chapter, 'The Most Important Form of Government Is a Father, Mother, and Children.' I was asked about Oscar-winner Natalie Portman's out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Natalie is an extraordinary actor, very deserving of her recent Oscar trophy and I am glad she will marry her baby's father," Huckabee said. "However, contrary to what the Hollywood media reported, I did not 'slam' or 'attack' Natalie Portman, nor did I criticize the hardworking single mothers in our country. My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death. That's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock."
Even as a republican, I completely disagree with this. Natalie Portman works hard for her "millions" and will not be a single mom. She is in love and happy and is a role model for any young woman. If she wants a baby and can afford it then who says she shouldn't have one? Huckabee, keep your mouth shut, you're coming off stupid
My mom is a single parent and not by choice. She always worked hard to provide for my sister and I with little to no outside assistance. She often went without things just so we would be provided for. She did an amazing job raising us: I'm about to graduate with a bachelor's degree and will be attending grad school in the fall and my sister is working towards her associate's degree. This jerk shouldn't lump all single mothers together and definitely not criticize a pregnant woman who has the power to squish him like the bug he is.
Well i had another comment on here but i guess the censor didnt want to put it up..being a single parent isnt easy..but neither is living with a man that comes home @ 3 am drunk after hanging out with his buddies-who he hero worships, only to have him push you baby down because hee cant see the tv to watch"alf" so yeah marriage isnt always the good thing. and i stopped after having 3 kids
Huckbee is so right. There is nothing glorifying about getting pregnant first and then getting married. It's not they way it works. Men now of days are wusses and can't do the right thing.
First off, being a single parent can be a good thing. Although I may struggle, we manage and my kids are not loved or nurtured any less because their dad is gone. In my case, i got on welfare when i was 29 wks pregnant and was put on bedrest to keep my child alive. And when i got pregnant with my 3rd 4th and 5th child, i didnt get more money, nor did i want it. I wanted my kiddos. They support you in getting educated and working. and if you dont comply you fofeit your aid. i worked into my 5 bedroom house, my car and i'm almost finished with my RN. and my tax $s helped pay back my aid. WE ALL DESERVE THE LOVE A CHILD BRINGS. WE ALL DESERVE TO MAKE SOMEONE OF OURSELVES, AND WE ALL HAVE TO WORK TO MAKE OUR DREAMS COME TRUE. SO PLS DONT JUDGE. ITS JUST NOT FAIR. AND WHY BE SO ANGRY? IT JUST MAKES U LOOK EXTREMELY IGNORANT. U HAVENT WALKED A DAY IN OUR SHOES. AND WITHOUT STRUUGLE SUCCESS DOESNT FEEL SO GOOD. DONT ALL U TOO GOOD FOR UNMARRIED PARENTS AGREE?
Btw there are plenty of married people who sleep around on thier spouses as well marriage is not a cure all.
If statistically speaking the majority of singles moms "are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care," do you really think that if these mother's had married first, they'd be less more, more educated, have a job and healthcare? These same mothers would probably be married to men who are poor, uneducated, jobless, and on government assistance of some sort and still have no healthcare. Being married does NOT solve these problems. Education you get from schools, which should lead to better jobs, more money, food on the table and still that doesn't guarantee proper healthcare.
I'm sorry but have to agree with him on this one. It is very sad that today there are a lot of children being born to unmarried parents or those that dont know their other parent (father or mother) that left out of there lives before they were even born. As far as moms being uneducated & so on and so on. I'd have to disagree on that part a little because not all single parents are that way. The bad parents are being more noticed then those who really are ok taking care of their kids on their own. As for Natalie Portman I dont know to much about her personal life nor do I care to much but she is however a good actress and from what I've read so far at least shes trying to make a better life for her child before their baby comes. Hopefully, the Dad of the child is not a loser where they get what they want and skip town. But yea, I get what Mr. Huckabees point is.
women have been getting pregnant outside of marriage for quite a while now, and i don't think Natalie Portman is going to start dictating whether they do or not. because if she does, the person getting pregnant probably isn't that smart anyway.
What did mr conservative want her to do? Have an abortion?
Mike Huckabee has been a baptist minister for years he is such a hypocrite first he lies and says our president was born in kenya now he criticizing this lady.he really needs to shut the hell up he is nothin but a liar thinking he will become president one day!never!
Ummmm.......hes not lying. Obama NEVER produced a birth certificate. If he wasnt trying to hide something, a birth certificate is something that is easily found. Obama is the lying one, and CNN et al helped him cover it up.
He has a good point, it just isn't expressed very well. single moms don't have it easy but young teenage girls see an icon get pregnant and don't know the responsibility that comes with it. they just think it's the next cool thing to do.
To be or not to be is up to her! No body's business!?!??!!!!
Get a grip Mike!!!
And where is the focus on themen that skipped out on their children, and are not paying child support, flying under the radar. Federal government should have a consistant plan for every state and regulate child support from a federal standpoint. Focus on solutions not issues.
Well..nice attempt to clean up the first statement. First single mothers are "uneducated", now we are "under-educated". I wonder why. Maybe because politicians like him stand with their foot on our necks and then look down upon us as if we are another species. They talk about our hardships like they have some concern or sympathy. If it wasn't for minorities, those dirty politicians wouldn't be able to pocket all those incentives and write offs. Bottom line is this, there are single mothers who are educated, like myself, and don't depend on welfare to feed my "starving" kid. When there is a will there is a way. Would it be possible to look over those "statistics" and find a way to motivate and not segregate? I do not appreciate being included with an ignorant stereotype. Sometimes an opinion is better left unsaid, no matter who you are. God does not like ugly. I pray for you. God BLESS.
THIS A HOLE IS CLEARLY THE UNEDUCATE ONE HERE NATALIE IS A GROWN ASS WOMAN AND SHES RICH SO HOW COULD SHE BE A POOR SINGLE MOM GET A LIFE
I disagree. If you are uneducated, and do not have a job, then don't have children. That's the problem with our country. We spend to much money on helping people who don't help themselves. It's very easy to prevent from getting pregnant. Natalie can have 10 children out of wedlock, because SHE will be supporting them, not my tax dollars.
Totally agree with everything he said.. love love love Natalie, but she's not the issue, its the message that comes from her being pregnant out of wed-lock
Single moms need to be motivated because some that are not motivated rely a .lot on their kids to make money
I know 4 girls under the age of 30 who have children 3 Are hard working women the forth is having a very hard time even thoug she has a bf who is trying go help. I can see hucks point but he chose a bad example. I also see young girls that just want to have babies to have someone to love them because they didnt get love from thier parent(S).
People should mind there dame business. she's not a Child anymore.
She's a role model? Not now, she shouldn't be.
Anyone delusional enough to use a Hollywood starlet's life as an example has never clearly grown up. Turn off your television and reconnect with yourself. You don't need talking heads to tell you how to live.
Maybe Huckabee should verbally attack Murphy Brown!
Anyone delusional enough to use a Hollywood starlet's life as an example has never clearly grown up. Turn off your television and reconnect with yourself. You don't need talking heads to tell you how to live.
Huckabee is just doing his job. Being a mule and saying the first thing that pops up in his head. Just like a four year old. "I like peas!" "No, I hate peas!"
Besides, if this is all we have on our news we are a sad country. What about someone do something about the gas prices. Oh wait, I just heard another small business crumble!
You know, it happens. A little wine, a little dinner, and presto, bun in the oven!!!
What are we blind? She can afford to be pregnant and 'out' of wedlock...oooo next you will be asking about Murphy Brown. Remember that Huckle berry?
With all the truly pressing issues the USA faces, you find Natalie Portman's family condition the "big topic". Stop pandering to your old, angry, white southern conservative supporters. You are not secular enough to be president and represent all
So, when Bristol Palin had a baby out-of-wedlock and as a teen, social conservatives couldn't stop falling over themselves praising Sarah and Todd for being so supportive. Yet when NP or others have babies out-of-wedlock (despite having the financial wherewithal to care for the child unlike BP), all they can say is what a bad example they set.
Shades of Dan Quayle criticizing Murphy Brown being pregnant ....
I guess it's not really the same since NP isn't a fictional character. Either way, both women, both fictional and real, are financially prepared to care for that child. We don't know how much Natalie Portman's SO will care for that baby – he might be a very involved dad and partner for all we know. And marriage does not guarantee good parenthood.
This is oh so familiar "Newt" talk. So sick and tired of high and mighty making blanket statements about women. Still male passive society. As if we women can produce children alone. Women are primarily single mothers because 1 in 3 are victims if domestic violence. Men are more likely to commit crimes and men are more likely to have affairs. Where does that leave a society if women who are mothers? ...statistically Huckabee? But if course it is some actress in Hollywood fault for man's failure to care for his wife and children.
I'M A REPUBLICAN...BUT I HAVE TO SAY THAT I THINK HIS NAME SHOULD BE: MIKE SCHMUCKABEE...
The absolute bottom line is that women who aren't equipped to care for a child should have any. (teenager or adult) He does have a point MAJORITY not ALL single mothers are struggling and way below poverty level, and STILL continue to have kids to CONTINUE getting government help. That is what REALLY passes me off, the government helps those stupid girls but they don't bat an eye to help an independent woman who wasn't stupid, and DID/DOES use a condom. It sucks that he did pick on Natalie and he shouldn't have, but the fact remains, that is what happens when you live in the public eye. It's sadly, part of that job description, everyone has opinions.:-/
First off, I want to start by saying that I am not a mother, but I was offended by what he said about single mothers being uneducated and poor and all that other stuff. I also have to disagree with him when he says that you should or have to be married to have children or for them to grow up properly. I don't think it really matters either way if a child grows up with married parents or in a single parent household. There can be a child growing up in a household with married parents and they teach the child right and wrong and guide them in the right direction in life and the child can still end up being a criminal. What does that show then? Absolutely nothing. I don't think being a child of a married couple means anything at all. I guess I don't see the point of why he was attacking Natalie or celebrities in a situation similar to hers. You know she is no dumb woman; she went to Harvard and got a degree and like others have stated she is 30 and is successful in her career. I just don't think it should really be that big of an issue that she is pregnant and not married. Last time I checked she is here in America where she has the ability to live her life any way she chooses.
Sometimes I just don't understand people. Who are any of we to say that Natalie Portman or any other unmarried pregnant woman should do! Marriage doesn't nearly speak to the time, commitment, dedication and love that must be given to a child. And here all of us are on his blog casting stones. While we should be worrying about the stones in our lives we left unturned. Instead of judging her for getting pregnant, let's judge her and this man tht help create this child on the way the child is raised! Not on a piece of paper. And let's not forgot most women when dreaming about their lives plans on being a single woman, poor or uneducated. A lot of people of this blog tends to forget life just happenings including Mike Huckabee!
He's right!! She should have an abortion to show responsibility!
I hate CNN NEWS! they ate biased liars only reporting half truths taking things out of context
God put before her life and death, good and evil. She chose life. He should take the plank out of his own eye before complaining about the stick in hers. May the Lord bless her.
Mike Huckabee needs to get a life. To say that single, unwed mothers are poor, uneducated, and otherwise helpless without a MAN around is so arrogant and cruel. What about married couples that are broke; should they have 10 kids? This is ridiculous. She's a beautiful, successful woman who is glowing and excited to have a child. Where does it say she is going to have nannies? He is a moron.
What does he care anyway? Apparently, the world is ending on May 21, 2011. I am sure he will be moving on like the rest of them. Good riddance, maybe the rest of us will finally know peace.
I completely agree. I was a young single mom for 6 years. I wasn't poor, but I struggled a lot & worked hard working & going to college. It's very very difficult & not something that should be glorified. I knew education & working hard was key but many people don't get that. I'm glad someone was able to put it in prospective.
Pay attention to the article, numbnuts. Huck was asked a question about Nat, and he answered it. If you paid even more attention, he wasn't bashing her at all. Everybody need to just chill the hill out and have a cold one.
Maybe Natalie was influenced by Bristol Palin, single mom glamorized on dancing with the stars
Why is Natalie Portman his only target? Why has Bristol Palin escaped his wrath, despite having no plans to wed?
There are so many married couples getting divorced creating single parent households.A piece of paper doesn't make you a better person or parent. If you can't take care of your kids (single or married) you shouldn't have any.
Mike Huckabee RULES. (or at least he will in 2012)
- this is so retarded, Nat isn't hurting anyone, and celebs can be role modles. They are examples that we can go far if we work hard enough, just like lawyers , they had to work to get there , or where they are, and Nat, she is engaged, and she's 30 , not 15, or a teen who doesn't have the means to care for a child. It is no ones place to say what she can or can not do, celebs may not have a hard knock life but they have struggles too , like anyone else. And for that, this guy Hucker or whateva can shut the hell up, and anyone who disagrees can stuff it with some cotton balls.
Where do these clowns like Huckabee come from? Did God/Goddess leave them in charge? They are the cause of most things that are happening today! Their fear, intimidation, judgments are placed on everyone. Afterall, from the beginning of time there has had to be "crowd control" which is religion, and moral standards according to what man thinks according to his way.
In today's world it appears to be an "anything goes" mentality is here! Society is in a cycle of low morals, very few values, little self respect for themselves or others, and a greed driven culture. Does this sound like Atlantis all over again
Well I am a single mother to a 10month old boy. I was engaged to the childs father and he is in the military. He decided when I was 6 months pregnant to leave us. I had quit my job and was waiting on him to send me the money to move and I just never heard from him. I just heard from him about a month ago, wanting to see his son. So lets talk about the dead beat dads that think they don't have to take responsiblity for their actions. And also, I don't fall into the category of being a single mom who is very poor, uneducated and can't get a job. I have a wonderful job with benefits and its a career job. So lets just stop with the stereotyping.
This is the kind of statements that give conservatives a bad name – "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care." Talk about a stereo type!! He sound self-righteous and judgmental. Is he suggesting that marriage secures a woman's financial future? Such a rarity in our society for a woman to be able to provide for herself? Is it such a rarity that a man might provide for a child and support the mother of his child? Marriage does not guarantee anything... marriage cannot guarantee financial security, a nurturing environment for children, or safety... Natalie Portman should be celebrated for her honesty and class – She has nothing to hide.
I don't like republicans, but i think Mr Huckabee has a point, then again Natalie is right by saying that a child is the important role in her life or matter of facts it should be the most important in any woman's life.
Huckabee has it all wrong. If he is going to criticize he needs to talk about the young teenage girls who are having babies with no education or money or women that refuse to use birth control despite their situation of being jobless & unable to care for a child. But a woman whether its Natalie Portman or just a single hard working mom who is able to provide for herself&child I really don't see why this person can't be a mother. Yes marriage is important in a child life but if a single women chooses to be a mom & has the means to love & care for a child then god bless you & your child & more power to you.
is it 1911?
Typical republican. It's not right if it isn't my way! Good lord, it's not like she's glorifying wedlock or anything. Stfu and worry about something important. Kthx.
It's intersting to see that in Arab muslim's countries people are asking for more freedom (also personal freedom) and in US it seems that religious groups are ruling the political and social debates. And by the way there are single parent and gay couples that are better educator that lot of straignt "married in church" couples.
Anzie what you think of this article
what part of "fiance" did he miss .. she is not a single parent lol and its not natalie nor hollywood's responsibility to raise your children and teach them why they should get married or have a committed partner.
Huckabee, how do sleep at night knowing that you commuted the sentence of the individual responsible for the slaying of four police officers? When Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee commuted the sentence of Maurice Clemmons. Clemmons was serving a 35-year prison term in Arkansas for armed robbery when his sentence was commuted by Huckabee. On November 29, 2009, Clemmons murdered four police officers in Parkland, Washington.
Huckabee feels very comfortable criticizing Natalie Portman, then backtracking, but he certainly DID criticize non-Hollywood single working mothers. And where on earth did he come up with the figure that 75% of all African-American births are out-of-wedlock?
He certainly didn't hop onto FOX news to slam bristol Palin or her family when she became a single mother. He wouldn't dare criticize a Republican pregnant girl – I'm sure he congratulated her for keeping the baby.
Why wasn't Portman afforded the same congrats? Hypocrite.
Let's not forget that she's cheating on Anakin Skywalker. Think of young Luke and Leia.
Oh my gosh, people! Have all of you read the entire interview? Huckabee did not single out Ms. Portman, he was asked about her. While I agree she is a wonderful actress and is very beautiful, she is a role model to young girls. It is no different than the sports stars that are role models to young boys and girls. When somebody becomes a celebrity, they can be become role models, whether they like it or not. I used to be a single mom, due to a divorce. My ex could not keep a job and child support was not high on his list of priorities. The sad part is that he lived with his widowed mother who thought I shouldn't get child support because I lived with my parents. DUH! Mr. Huckabee, as a former government official, has seen some things that the average person may not see, such as the statistics. For all you single moms that commented that you had good incomes and had no problems, good girls! However, that is not the majority. There are those like me, single due to divorce. Then there are the teen moms who are very naive about the responsibilities. I am not saying they should have abortions, go the adoption route or anything like that. Teen girls look up to movie stars and singers, wanting to be like them. Fine but the majority don't have the resources to raise children that these celebrities have. A lot of them think that their boyfriends really love them and are going to have the white picket fence life. That is not reality and neither is Hollywood. There are too many people on government assistance due to this type of belief. It can't be changed because young girls are normally gullible. No one is to blame. Fiance does not mean married, even though married may not be the ideal situation. The bottom line is Mr. Huckabee, like him or not, did not single Ms. Portman out. If you don't like the answer, don't ask the question. And teenage girls will think that if she can make it, they can, too. We wind up paying for it through public assistance. Just like the jocks out there that think they don't need educations because they will go pro. Yeah, right.
Huckabee -N-Palin 3333 oh We'Ll be dead in 3333 but they might be electable by then"
Huckabee needs to get a life and stop talking trash on a movie star and she is getting married to the babies father and she wanted the man so she got pregnant maybe not the best way but woman have been getting pregnant first and married second its called life dummy
granted she is not married, YET, but she Stole her intended from another woman who had a long-term relationship with him, to me , that's the biggest sin of all....shame on you Natalie. Let's see how long this lasts.
She didn't 'steal' him you idiot. She didn't force him into her bed and make her get pregnant. You only blame the other woman when your in denial about the fact that your man is a pos-he walked away all on his own. Has nothing to to with the woman-he would have done it with someone else if Portman wasn't there...putting blame on all the wrong people...
Being married does not magically make people great parents. And how many marriages end in divorce?? Just because Huckabee may have been accurate in his statistics, doesn't mean he still wasn't slamming her for being unwed, or being judgmental regardless of whether or not he feels bad now. And if he does feel bad it's only because he can't afford to be cast in a negative light. Perhaps Natalie was supposed to forgo the event all-together, or hide the fact that she was pregnant?? Maybe wear a paper bag over her head in shame, not show her face in public at all?? Tell me, is it better for a child to witness the break down of their parent's marriage, or live in foster care never truly belonging to anyone... rather than be adopted by a family who would truly want them? Perhaps someone should ask some adoptable kids whether they'd rather be part of an unwed or gay family dynamic, or have no family at all. Or maybe ask the kid who's witnessing one drunk parent beat the crap out of his other parent if he's glad that mom and dad stayed together for the "sake of the kids", or if mom made a good choice rushing into marriage specifically because she was suddenly pregnant. How is that morally right? And why doesn't anyone ever spout off rhetoric over those ugly statistics?? Raising kids in or out of wedlock takes the SAME amount of dedication, and perseverance, love, and WORK and simply being married does not in anyway make it any easier. And as for blaming Natalie for being a bad influence – gimme a freaking break already! Parent's really need to stop blaming everyone else for their lack of parenting abilities. If you don't want your children growing up thinking one way or another then TEACH them and guide them and stop letting modern media raise your kids for you. Just because someone is on TV or is a self-proclaimed voice of God, doesn't mean he's right or that he knows what he's talking about.
Why is it he didn't mention anything about the jerks that get all these women pregnant! Men are bailing out on families all over the place, but all we hear is criticism of the women!! Dead beat dads and cheating men are a national crises!
What huckabee isn't thinking about is all those parents out there who in fact are married and have children and still can't support they're children even then. Usually ending up in divorce. I am someone who is having a kid out of wed lock. Granted my boyfriend and I are still together and plan to stay together but no one is trying glamour up Natalie's pregnancy.... she's pregnant and she keeping the baby and as of now the father plans to stick around. What more does huckabe want, at least she didn't get an abortion.
Most of the posters here seem to have missed the point Huckabee is making. Women have freedom to make their own choices however we now have a government assistance program that has suffered budget cuts due to over use as well as economic crisis. Negligent fathers are not held accountable. There are young women who actually plan their family by the public assistance standards. Having worked in this field for years I am sad to say this is what goes on. Shows like teen mom and 16 and pregnant glamorize the teens in crisis and at times the media turns them into the headline of the week. The point Huckabee is trying to make is this is not reality. There are kids growing up on public assistance because of the very choice the parents or single mom made. The ugly truth is that most single unwed parents are not educated, not independently wealthy and have no job skills AND WE ALL feed, dress, house and provide health care for these families with our ever rising taxes while struggling to provide for our own. Huckabee is not judging anyone. He simply made a valid point.
Well, perhaps another Jewish woman (young girl) can say 'immaculate conception' - worked before.
Congratulations to Natalie Postman on her well deserved Oscar and on starting a new family. All these amazing blessings probably have left her breathless and so grateful for all the success she has. So many of us never get to live our dreams but she is. We listen to the media and their negative rederic day in and day out squeezing out our dreams and desires. They tell us how to spend our money, live our lives and that we need 'things' to make a happy home. Money only buys temporary happiness, its fleeting. We forget its a tool to make our lives easier, but we abuse it.
It's with this mind set that we fail as a nation. We want to scream about morals. Judge people who work hard for the very little they have. Now programs like Planned Parenthood have had their federal funding cut. A place were a mid to low income woman could get condoms, talk about medical care, and plan for the future.
He may not be attacking one hardworking woman but he is telling the women of our country what to do with their bodies. When will men stop trying to 'own' us like property? We vote in this country also, but when it comes to women's issues we're patted on the head and told they know what is best for me.
What is beat for me is to allow me to lake my choices. To have options so that if the inevitable happened, i.e. I became pregnant I would have some place to turn. But as it is the only way a woman with little education can get care is county or goverment help. It becomes a vicious cycle, because choosing to have no insurance or some type of insurance often is what keeps them from getting off assistance, because of the limitations the programs put on them.
So we are punished, yet again for attempting normalcy. Slapped on the wrists for wanting to better ourselves. So its go without and pray we can pay the medical or stay on assistance with little hope of getting off it.
So before a man with millions of dollars tells me about my 'moral' code I want him to consider the facts. Instead of trying to fix America's so called morality issue maybe we need to fix the reality we have now. No healthcare. Children shooting children. Bringing our Troops home! So many issues being grossed over. A true Christian would see the whole picture not just his view. Open up your perspective to see there is so much more than what one rich political figure sees. Ghandi said Be the change you want to be. It starts with us. Not a political figure.
I definitely differ with you, Mike Huckabee. When you singled out Natalie Portman when you could have chosen to approach it differently, like directing your opinions to 'people in the public eye', for example, you did "slam' and 'attack' Natalie Portman, specifically. (You are a public figure and your words are scrutinized and dissected more than those not in the public eye; I'm sure you know that.) Not at all gentlemanly for a 'family values' conservative man, much less compassionate and forgiving – most conservatives profess those are important values. What if she was your daughter, er, or granddaughter (your opinion on this seems to suggest you are from a more ancient time period). How would you feel if somebody singled her out like you did Natalie? And not to mention it was just dumb, politically, to single out an actress so beloved by so many millions. And an actress who has done so many good things in the world.
By the way, I am a single divorced Christian mother (and divorced not by my choice) and yet have enjoyed many years of not being 'poor' nor uneducated, and I know many single mothers who can say the same. My son is successful and a wonderful person. Maybe you should join the group of humanity who are humble instead of self-righteous Christians...and the 21st century.
If I could afford it financially, emotionally and mentally I would be a single mom... I wouldn't want anyone else having a say in how I raise a kid because I have different views on parenthood-but that's just me.
Natalie has many accomplishments under her belt, worked since childhood, graduated college, earned Oscar, and fell in love and made a baby. Now if all goes well married or not, she will have the biggest accomplishment undoubtedly earned as well (being a mother!). I don't see how her decision portrays an 'easy single mother life' when she's worked very hard to get to where she is. Such simplistic views from another blah 'male' politician. Whoever asked him his opinion of NP definitely baited him good.
Well..he's 100% right.
I agree with him, it is hard trying to rise children by yourself. working two jobs too make ends meet. the father is no where around, and you don't have a million dollars in the bank. when the movie stars have babys out of wed lock it is so cute, and everyone have nice things to say, when we do it, they say bad things about us. it's not right.
The whole problem is that he is equating money with marriage and kids. There are poor married couples that choose to have children even though they certainly cannot afford them. He is so sure of this but perhaps he doesn't see the horrid stories in the news of husbands and wives killing childrena and vice versa. He has absolutely no statistical data to back it up.
As Huckabee back peddles regarding his comments regarding Portman and her child, he chimes in with he's worried about single mothers. Well, why are many mothers single? They were dumped by frightened boyfriends, dumped by fiances who changed their minds about being a father, or dumped by husbands who turn into weekend dads at best and then sometimes remarry later and have another family. Why isn't the Huck talking about men's roles in single mother issues?
May his book tour fail. May he tumble from the Republican bandstand. And may he please keep his right wing Christian mouth shut!
Too many right wing Christians. Not enough lions!
Mike Huckabee is mad at Natalie Portman for glamorizing single mothers. I look forward to reading his statements criticizing Bristol Palin
If he has any brains he will leave her alone. The demos have a full time job bashing the Palins because they all are so afraid of her.
Huck probably figured she was a democrat so he wasn't worried about losing her vote for the upcoming presidential election.
Dan Quayle... Murphy Brown... enough said.
Huckabee is a clown! He thinks it's okay to release someone from prison, who ends up shooting 4 cops and yet he tries to play the religious card on someone who doesn't deserve his spite. If he ever makes it to the White House, you can expect most of his chosen staff will be felons he thinks he can rehabilitate.
If the american people can't tell the difference between celebrity lives and reality we have bigger problems than unwed mothers. If your children are getting their morals from tv, there is no hope for us. Besides who cares what huckabee says anyway, his sense of reality is so warped it should be a crime.
If Miss Portman had a miscarriage in Georgia she would be in jail for murder according to their new law.
In Virginia if Miss Portman went to a clinic and was the six patient of the day.....she would be denied her legal right to an abortion….because of another dumb law passed by white men.
If Miss Portman had an abortion the GOPs would be calling her a murder.
Miss Portman is having her baby and is single......and still you are not happy.
Oh, by the way Mickey not all single mothers are ignorant and poor. Many of us have college degrees, professional jobs and take care of our kids without government assistance. Those single mothers who do struggle......what are you and your rich corporate buddies doing for them? Nothing, except paying them minimum wage and no healthcare benefits. The GOP helps no one except the rich. They refuse to give these hard working women educational services…so they can get a better job; healthcare and food.
The illegal wetbacks in VA get more assistance than an honest working, struggling Mother of two.....fighting to keep alive.
Mickey....I want you and your kind to do me a favor – don’t run for office and keep your mouth shut!!!!
Women of the United States of America…….we have to seek out, run and win elections at the local, state and federal levels. Our lives and the lives of our children will not improve until we have an equal vote and say in our government!!!!!!
It is the only way to rid ourselves of the Mickey’s of this country.
Natalie Portman is a 29-year-old woman with a Harvard education and a successful career. Regardless of what field that career is in, I support her right to live her life as she chooses. Marriage doesn't work in this country. Most marriages end in divorce, and that's not good for kids either. Women are no longer property. We can do as we choose with our lives and our bodies. If she had gotten pregnant by insemination, I would be saying the same thing. Mike Huckabee seems to think that bullying people into getting married will solve our nations problems, when the truth is that education is what we need. We cut off funding to already over-crowded family planning clinics, and wonder why the poor and uneducated can't seem to make birth control work. We refuse to tell our children what to do if their desires overwhelm them, then wonder why teenagers have babies. Birth control of any form only works if you can afford it and know how to use it. A ring and a piece of paper won't alter the problem at all.
Mike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Leave the Middle ages..It will refresh you..
What does he have to say about "Bristol Palin"?
Not to mention the lunacy of some politicians' expectations of celebrities to raise people's kids.
Nothing to do with Natalie Portman here and everything to do with the lunacy of politicians overlooking proper parenting and citizens taking accountability for their actions. It's amazing the time wasted by some politicians' finger-pointing could actually be used, um, spending time doing their job & being productive?
So... his rationale is that – because there are a lot of single moms who can't afford to be single moms that Portman shouldn't be???
I'm a moderate republican but Mike Huckabee should mind his own business. He sayys some pretty bizarre things and thats why his chances of getting the republican nomination for president are zero.
I think it's hilarious he didn't even realize she was engaged until after he was criticized for the comments so I guess it does mean she plans on being husband and wife for the child. It's not his opinion which depressed me (although it can be that, too). It's the fact that political figures try to quickly find a scapegoat to glorify their opinions and/or agenda without doing any homework on the person. Regardless, many people realize these days that they don't need a piece of paper to have/create families and live happily ever after (does Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell ring any bells?)
Where are Dan Quayle and Murphy Brown when you need them?....I like that story better since he was condemning a fictional character that was unwed and pregnant on tv.
I think what he said is crappy. Each and every child is a gift. I think I read somewhere she is thrilled and her dad is a fertility doctor so she knows how precious if a thing it is to conceive. Wish her well and so should huckaby
Absolute garbage, I am a single mother who is well educated, who does have a job, who does provide amply for my child, who is not starving, and I have NEVER relied on anything from the government, and Iam the statistic, I had a baby out of wedlock at 20 so its easy for u to criticize Natalie for being out of wedlock. Its not the 1800s anymore folks, have we not heard of the alternative lifestyle.
Wow, Hikcabee, you will never make it in office thinking like that. You should give up running for president and go work for faux news instead!! Your judgement day is coming soon Hikcabee!!
i think hes just upset because hes not the one who knocked her up. i know i am haha
ha ha ha!
Seems to me there is always an underlying anti-jewish theme. Maybe this guy should ask That idiot that was fired from Dior to be his running mate. How dare this guy even mention her name. Politicians we aware....we will not support this
Huck Finn is going to run on the "shot gun wedding" platform.
Really who gives a rats butt what mike huckabee thinks. If youre single and can afford a child then have one.
SHUT UP -> Ashleigh at No. 7, the statement yu made OBVIOUSLY SHOW HOW MUCH YU ARE A DAM IGNORANT IDIOTT/FOOL!!!
I KNOW WHY. Portman got his absolute favorite NAZI fired...Christian Dior designer John Galliano
"... the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death. That’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock.". <-AGREED, no argument about that
I don't think there's anything wrong with having children out of wedlock provided both parents are involved and committed to raising the child or children together. Marriage isn't for everyone and plenty of people choose to live in committed relationships instead of marrying. Conservatives put so much emphasis on marriage and wedding rings and so forth when, really, that's not what family's truly about.
Yes, it's soooo much better to be like Newt, who screws everyone else wife but leaves his "barren."
And what was Bristol Palin..... RIPE?
Due to her having lots of money, she can hire and pay all the people she needs to help her raise her child. And she could "stay home" and raise her child all by herself while supporting them both very well due to her having lots of money. Money makes it very different from those who don't have it.
Yes, people are glamorizing the so called celebrities who are having babies out of wetlock,or they are stories of women becoming famous for nothing, except perhaps for having a certain kind of appearance such as the Kardashian sisters, Natalie Portman, etc. Just because they have money doesn’t mean they can ignore the social morals. , being a celebrity does not give anyone exclusive rights to do whatever they want in society, whether it is bad or good. I would prefer to turn my TV off , rather than watching some over-hyped "reality" show with spoiled, non-talented women, or 'movie stars' with no morals
We need to stop glamorizing the pretty-but-useless types and give credit to the real women in the world who are worth admiring. This has nothing to do with politics nor religion but rather family values. Period
Natalie Portman has a degree in Psychology from Harvard. And has won an Oscar. I work at Intel and read on the company home page that she placed high in a science fair put on by Intel when she was in HS.
What have you done?
Without over thinking this, I have only two words for Huckabee...
Huckabee's tone-deafness and paleo-misogyny aside, I was dismayed my CNN's repition of Huckabee's demeaning choice of the word "starlet" (in Don Lemon's on-air copy on the story today). I won't unpack my associations with that word; it's not profane in any way, but it's certainly not appropriate to apply it to an artist of Natalie Portman's caliber and achievement. Huckabee's use of it reveals something about him; I would expect CNN's copy editors to take more care.
Is that what Minister Huckabee had to say about his friend Sarah P's daughter? Oh, right, Bristol then came out lecturing abstenance. I suppose that makes it alright. And her stint on Dancing with the Starts didn't hurt either.
I understand and agree with the point he is trying to make, however, since the vast majority of Hollywood marriages end in divorce; is it possible that Ms. Portman is being prudent? I'm not a fan of criticizing others, especially the most popular actress in America. This could back fire on him. There are way more dire and pressing things to discuss instead of focusing on planet Hollywood.
Come on, did you expect anything else out of this Jesus freak?
Maybe instead of bad mouthing single Mothers he should talk about dumb governors who let people out of prison so they can go and kill 4 Police Officers doing their jobs!!! Oh my bad that would have been talking about himself!!
He's getting what he wants by pandering to his birthers and religious right and getting free press and his name in the news as a result. And once his comments satisfy his base but raises eyebrows outside his base, he claims he "misspoke" or issues additional comments to "clarify" his earlier comments.
Looks like he drank a little too much of the Kool-Aid over at Fox. What a loser.
It's not a good thing that people feel its okay to get pregnant before being married. She shouldn't have been doing the deed before being married. She obviously doesn't have the moral values she should. It doesn't matter how much money she makes or who she is. Its a wrong situation and she shouldn't be gloating about it.
Are you serious???
If so, you are a rare breed. An endangered species.
I agree with you and you aren't a rare breed. There are plenty Americans out there that feel this way, they are just not speaking on this board because they have better things to do rather than attack a politician based solely on party lines. Those that are opposed to us are the ones that are destroying the morals and foundation of this country. What's "endangered" is the future of this country. It makes me not want to bring children into this world at all because of how corrupt our society has become.
maybe he's just taking a cue from dan quayle's stellar political career. oh, wait...
Mr. Huckabee with all due respect I am a 19 year old African American student I am also the proud mother of 1 year old twins. I just currently was laid off of my job but all in all I don't get any government assistance at all and I still make sure that my children are well taken care of and they are not by your standards starving to death so for you to say that single mothers are as you put it dirt poor un educated and living off the government is straight bull. some of us are making something of ourselves so we can contribute to this beautiful country and not as you try to put it scheming the government by having so many kids so my best advice to you would be to start thinking before you speak cause if you stay on this road 2012 will be more of a show down between mitt romney and the gov. Of Mississippi(sorry for not knowing your name) and I'm a democrat by the way
Why didn't he say anything about Bristol Palin? She was only pregnant out of wedlock but she was a teenager.
Do you idiots not understand that Huckabee is speaking about generalities. Statistics don't lie. We all know some single moms who have successfully parented their children without governmental assistance, but the majority need help. That is a fact. I am proud that Huckabee is using facts. There is no arguing a fact.
Gee, Huckabee's son grew up with 2 parents & went on to torture & kill a puppy for fun! Yeah, you are a stellar parent & should be giving parenting advise!!!
How about this moron being a bad role model for people who are trying to lose weight? Not many out there are having cadillac health care coverage...
go blow smoke and worry about more important things than some celebrities child out of wedlock. She's not the first and certainly won't be the last...so just get over it and worry about your own life and stop criticizing others.
If you replace "Natalie Portman" with "NANCY REAGAN", you'd still have a wealthy actress who got pregnant before getting married.
Care to criticize Nancy and Ron, Mike?
So she is having a baby and not married hmmm whats better having a baby and not being married or having a baby when you are married and partially through the childs life mom or dad has an affair and rips the family apart???? I wonder......WWW.CHEATERVILLE.COM will put an end to casual affairs. Post about a cheater ANONYMOUSLY and for FREE you can even post their picture!! 7 out of 10 partners cheat; dont worry yours isnt one of them.....CHEATERVILLE
It seems to me that we are all forgetting one thing. Jesus taught us to love one another, not to condemn. Whether a woman is a single mom or married or divorced, we should do our best to support her and her child with love because having been there myself, you can't judge someone until you've "walked a mile in their mocassins." I would rather be known for how much I loved an unwed mother or any sinner for that matterthan how I condemned them. The stick in my eye makes it hard to see somebody else's failures.
So Mike, its the media's fault again? Better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Typical republican comments...get a life.
He's not even comparing apples to apples. Natalie Portman is 29 year old, Ivy League educated woman, obviously making a great amount of money where she can certainly afford to care for a child. The fact of the matter is she is happy about being pregnant and is going to care for her child without financial assistance. What difference does this make in the life and politics of Mike Huckabee? She's taking responsibility for her own life – isn't that he wants from the public? He would be chatising her if she decided not to have the baby.
I would much rather have a single mom with one baby then a a pair of so called "god fearing chirstians" who have like 10 babies.
Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.
Right on, Huck! Don't even get me started on that Murphy Brown. And what's with all these kids wearing their hats backward and listening to the rap music?
It baffles me that, no matter what crazy statement one of the conservative politicians or pundits make, many of the average Republicans out there simply accept an apology or lame explanation from the offender. Ask your self how many times per year do you (hopefully a mature adult) has to apologize for saying something untrue or hurtful. Pretty rarely I bet. Yet the talking heads of America seem to be contantly having to explain that they "misspoke", they "did not mean to offend Jewish people", that they "really aren't racist", that they "really don't believe that Obama is a Muslim", that "rifle scope cross-hairs don't signify anything". Time to stand-up and grow-up folks ...or be the joke political party in the US.
You mean like the WI governor that was called a Nazi and was in the cross hairs by the union thugs?? Double standard my progressive friend!!
Time to grow up, just because we don't like NObama, we are not racists. Obama is an idiot!! Oh I do believe NObama is a muzzie!! I stand on what I say. Time to grow up and become an adult!
Oh Dread one... I didn't imply that you were a racist. Only that serveral conservatives have had to issue a follow-up press release declaring that they are not racists after making an unfortunate public statement. Again... how many normal Americans have had to apologize in the last year for saying something (privately or in public) that sounded racist.
I'm sorry to inform you, however, that even though you might not be a racist, you are in fact a bigot. The use of the word "Muzzie" makes this clear to all.
If your daughter gets pregnant before she's safely out of your house, granted it's a bummer. But don't go trying to blame Natalie Portman, you should have taught your own kid that having chidlren will suck all of the fun out of their life, and they ought to stay child-free as long as possible. How ANYONE could reach the age when the human reproductive cycle begins and NOT have learned that lesson somehow from either parent or the many signs that exist in our world, is a mystery. It's not Natalie Portman's pregancy that is eroding the moral fabric of our society. It's idjits like Mike Huckabee with their self-serving over-simplistic rhetoric esposing conservative family themes, that he tries to pass off as having statistical legitimacy.
Children grow up and become very aware of the stigma of being illegitimate, and they become adults who judge their parents. My own father was illegitimate, and believe me, it was considered a shameful thing.
Well, there's another potential candidate for President who I can cross off of my list.
Here's an idea, get married, have children!! The old fashioned way. ever wonder why the why "baby Momma" thing is a complete failure??
I thought Liberals were open to anything, even marriage prior to giving birth. Guess not. Liberals love to hear different ideas, as long as it's that same as theirs. Gosh David F. As long as it's your terms, right? The old double standard is alive and well. Republicans generally stand on their beliefs. It's not a secret.
Here's an idea. People have the right to choose. Forcing people to get married would be fascism. Are you a fascist?
I thought Republicans were for freedom. Gosh, I guess that's freedom, so long as it's on their terms.
Huck Finn and the great crusade, LOL.
Thanks for the update-revision Huck Finn.
How about this: Natalie Portmans plans for her child, and whether or not she gets married are her choice. This IS America, isn't it? Home of the brave, land of the free?
he's an idiot. i understand what he's trying to say, but criticizing america's current sweetheart and suggesting that she should demonstrate a little more shame at her current situation is just moronic.
You liberals are all idiots! You celebrate single parenthood, because that's all you know. Kids want two parents, not nannies and babysitters. Get a clue morons!!
Tossing labels around a bit, aren't we?
My folks were married before having me, my brother and sister. My dad is a lawyer, mom a teacher. Both hard core Republicans. They divorced when I was 12. I'm an Independant. So we're not ALL liberals on this blog. Maybe you should think before you post.
I have several friends of single mom's, and they turned out well. How about freedom of choice should reign, mr pirate?
No one "celebrates" single motherhood. You think all those single moms WANT to be single moms? The vast majority would greatly prefer to be married, but they've either divorced their husbands, or the father failed to commit, or just plain disappeared, or is a dangerous influence to the child and mother, or just isn't marriage material.
Marriage of the parents isn't always in the child's best interest. Although children of married parents generally to better than single parents, children of single parents do better than children of married parents who hate each other.
In addition to the strong points made by many, Huckabee insults young woman by implying they don't understand the difference between what an award-winning Hollywood actress and an urban teen can afford – but I suspect his intended audience isn't those women because they don't usually vote in large numbers. Nor is his audience the fathers of those unwed mothers. It should be, but he may realize the reasonable thing to say – gratify yourself or use a contraceptive – would alienate the conservatives whose only answer is "abstinence". It's really too bad, because some of his ideas (like moving toward a VAT) are worth discussing.
Way to go lets compare a great actress to a single mother that has nothing? if you are soooo concerned why dont you ask to marry her. wow just when you thought Rhiannas situation was bashed now people have to pick on a grown beautiful talented actress that just quit Dior cause of another idoit. what is this world coming to? let people life there life freely and deal with ur own!!!!
"Idoit". LOL ,I know what your saying.I can't spell too good nohow.
Who really cares what Huck thinks.Next we'll hear some high standard from Palin . I hope her baby is healthy & happy.
She's paying for it.
Wow, this is so fun! On one hand, he never said a word about a single mother who turned her single motherhood and out of wedlock status into a career. She even copyrighted her name. Same single mother was heralded and lauded amongst right wing conservatives and a "Hero" and a "Role Model". She goes to schools and gives speeches on abstinence. Not one word from 'Ol Huck. Let's remember that up until this particular single mother, most out of wedlock mothers were stereotyped as fat, black, ghetto women on welfare smoking crack with no family values whatsoever. Then this Alaskan girl does it and it's ok? Now this Jewish actress has the nerve to become pregnant while she's engaged? Oh no! The Huck can't stand for that! Come on people, the handwriting is on the wall here and it's coming from FoKKKs News "Fair and Balanced"! (Oh, for those of you who did not get the hints, I was calling out Bristol Palin)
She's a hero because she admitted she made a mistake and is now telling teens to not take the path she did. That takes courage. She never said it was okay. So basically you are saying that you want teens to get pregnant and not abstain judging by your critical remarks of bristol for her speaking engagements? Are u kidding me? I'm guessing you are a democrat just wanting to sink your teeth into anything republican. And p.s. maybe it wasn't huckabee, but there was plenty of talk from both sides when bristol was pregnant.
I can think of worse individuals for people to emulate. Ms. Portman is a Multi-millionaire, Harvard graduate, such a poor role model. Governor Huckabee is not making a very impressive show of himself this week.
And this is why the GOP should NOT run Mikey for President. He's too polarizing. If the GOP wants to stay second fiddle, then, by all means, run Mikey. You'll just cause many in the GOP to either not vote or place an "against" vote. Either way, we'll lose.
What about all the mothers who are widows now, who are taking care of their children with out the help of aid from anyone, stop picking on pregnant woman.
Huckabee is an idiot. Who cares who has a baby out of wedlock. And we aren't dumb Mike, we are aware we don't make millions, and we also don't care that you think someone who does is painting a bad picture for those of us who do have children and aren't married. Its our choice.
Who cares if Natalie is or isn't engaged. She can more the provide for her child. We aren't in the 50s anymore. I agree that if he wanted to single out someone, it should be MTV with their 16 and pregnant show, or maybe bristol. Getting married just because of pregnancy is no reason to get married. Just because a childs parents are married doesn't mean anything.
I like how conservatives act like they care about babies BEFORE they are born, but once they're born – it's "good luck, you're on your own!"
*sigh* Focus, Huck. We've got a whole lot of bigger problems than you getting your self-righteous on.
Typical republican. He knew exactly what he was doing when he made those statements. That's how they con dumb white trash into voting for them (i'm white by the way). They talk about religion, socialism, taking your guns away, and people believe all that @#$% and vote them based on it. Then when they're elected they gut the middle class and the poor and worship their corporate overlords. When are you going to learn people ! If we keep electing them, they will eventually destroy the country just for their own profit and power.
Where was this criticism from Huck when Bristol Palin was pregnant? Huckabee praised her for choosing life and gave no criticism of her but attacks a "Hollywood type" for doing the same thing. Mike, why are you and hypocrite and have a double standard? Seems pathetic that a pastor would pick and choose morality stances based political affiliation and Fox News ratings. Way to play to your base.
Mike Huckabee doesn't have much to give so he scores points by being negative. Portman's baby is an abomination while Bristol's pregnancy is a sign of maturation. He doesn't know where Obama grew up. A dog always returns to where he threw up. A baptist minister is supposed to inspire your soul. This one turned out to be an a**hole. Buck Huckafee!
Huckabee can suck-a-me!
Her awesome body is now forever ruined. So much for Natalie Portman ever being considered hot.
Politician's are so out of touch with reality...
any oppinion expressed on fox news is poisen to the week minded. fox news channel is a cancer to this countr. it is sad on how many believe or follow there unfair unbalanced fabricated news, or controlling oppinions. btw not married does not equal singlecparent.
For f#%@ sake. SPELLING!
OOOhhhh Jesus. huckabee is a joke, and so is organized religion.
Why would anyone even listen to this idiot blowhard. Every time he opens his mouth nothing but stupid comes out.;
Who cares? Natalie Portman is se*y
Natalie Portman is not a single mom. She & and the baby's father might have had the baby out of wedlock, but she is engaged to the baby's father. Engaged to be married. Plus, she's not going around bragging about being a single mom. She's happy to be with child and soon start a family. So, it wasn't in the traditional time line: meet, marry and baby. She very much takes every chance to mention her future husband in a postive light. I think she is a classy young lady who is radiant and excited about her future and she should be considered a role model.
He has a point about the majority of single moms. However, to blame natalie portman for other women getting knocked up out of wedlock is silly. If those women aren't smart enough to figure out that they aren't in the same financial situation as natalie, how is that natalie portman's fault?
The blame is on Natalie portman and countless others as a collective whole that influences the American public and glamorize getting pregnant without a father figure ie being married. As yes, there are plenty of women out there who don't think about the facts before they sleep with someone.
Some of you are so stuck on protecting Ms. Portman's celebrity that you are clearly missing the point. The point is that many people glamorize single motherhood. (Yes I know that she is engaged so she really isn't a single mother.) Portman was used to add shock value and to get people talking. She was only used because her name is hot right now due to winning an Oscar. Stop being tools of the media! This problem is not new for people to get all bent out of shape over it. There is nothing glamorous about a child being raised without a father. Too many children are born into this world by people without the resources in place to provide for them. This was not an attack on ALL single mothers so all of you with the exceptions need to really get over yourselves. You are part of a bigger group that unfortunately represents you poorly.
BTW, I am not a Mike Huckabee supporter.
Huckleberry is an idiot. Ms. Postman is in a committed relationship and is engaged to be married! I consider myself pretty conservative but bozos like this huckleberry are idiots!!!!!
So let's see these kids would be starving to death and not have health care or a houes over their head if it weren't for governmnet assistance, but Huckabee wants to eliminate these programs. Sounds like he's REALLY for taking care of Americans, at least the ones that can survive in his America. Republican is a nother term for rich facist hypocrite.
Huckabee has bigger problems to worry about, like his double chin!
So, is it some kind of wierd jealousy that makes the Pillsbury Doughboy's identical twin roll down this path?
And where was this hypocrite when Bristol Palin got knocked up and had a baby out of wedlock?
Ask Dan Quayle how it went for him trying to turn a television character into a national conversation. Can Huckabee spell potato? Republicans need to quit wasting our time all this silly talk and conspiracy theories and be adults.
How is it being glorified? They're engaged. They're getting married. She won't be a "single mom." If anyone is guilty of presenting a distorted image of anything to poor, uneducated people, it's a Baptist preacher. I've known and observed enough of them to know what I'm talking about.
Huckabee, mind your own business and stop beliving goofy religious parables are literally true.
Believe in good not god.
Dan Quayle vs. Murphy Brown – Take two.
Has anyone realized that maybe Natalie made the decision to have this child because she knew she had a stable home and could afford to have a child. You are under and demeaning all teenage girls when you say they blindly follow idols when having children are concerned. It is a pretty common fact that having a child is the hardest job there is! TO Woman who are single moms and rocked it Power to you, to those who have it tough I am sorry. But there are plenty of people who are poor and married to cut everyone some slack someone somewhere is going to have it tough whether they have two parents or one.
Dear Mr Huckabee, the last time I looked America is a free country and not a dictatorship. Also everyone should be responsible for their own actions. It is the lack of responsibility that is ruining this country. Miss Portman is not the problem, it is those who knowingly bring a child into this world when they are not in a financial position to take care of him/her that are the problem. Then what happens is that those who go to work, pay their taxes and wait until being financially stable before having children are punished by the burdens of paying for those who are not responsible. You also seem to forget that many single mothers are in that position by being abandoned by their husbands/boyfriends and not by choice. May be an idea to focus on big business that is ruining this country in pursuit of the mighty dollar.
I didn't choose 2 b single my husband loved cocaine more than his wife & kids. After 10yrs of marrige we had nothing 2 show 4 it I worked & went 2 community college got my pharm tech degree.kids need love 1st. When there's love then everything else follows like food medical etc. Lots of married people end up divorced especially in hollywood. There are different types of role models. Whoever this guy is that's attacking natalie needs 2 worry about his own problems/life & keep his nose out of hers/others business. I dnt know if natalie has ever said she considered herself a role model. Humans were born with god given free will. We can teach our kids right/wrong instill values but in the end they're gonna do what their gonna do. Natalie isn't the only single mom. & yes their are people out their that should stop having kids if they can't support them. & those kids that can't b supported (well its not their fault -the kids) I know that their are a lot of other huge concerns on earth than natalie portman being pregnant & unwed. If this guy has chance 2 speak & b heard by a lot of people maybe he should voice other concerns about things that can b changed for the good & not things that can't like natalie being pregant! To him & others focus on your own family & if you wanna change or help others think about what's happening in other parts of the world africa for 1. There's much ore horrible things happening than a movie star being unwed and pregant.
Huckabee doesn't like her because she is Jewish. God help us if this nut gets to the White House.
What a moron! You are a member of the GOP and you just confirmed every durogatory stereotype for your people. Did you wake up braindead or was this a gradual thing?
Huckabee, money is power and control. Natalie could raise 20 kids if she wants to. I am afraid you don't get how Hollywood and the world works and are therefore not fit for office.
you do not have to be a Republican nor a religious person to be offended by the Hollywood 'movie stars' who think they can behave immorally , drug addicts, having children out of wedlock, etc. What kind of message do they for instance send out to the young ones who pay so much attention to what movie stars do?. I have no respect for 'movie stars' that use their status quo to just act bad in the eyes of the public. All the celebrity scandals are nothing but a menace to society. A 'movie star' who thinks doing bad things is a disgrace to our world. By the way am not a Republican neither a religios person, but I do care very much about this country.
This coming from a arkansa white trash bigot.he must wear blinders has he not paid attension to his on
P oeople.all this and he wants to run for what agin.he's another one of those opressed white people.
Why criticize publicly now? Where was this criticism when Bristol Palin was pregnant? From the man who recently stated that Obama was raised in Kenya with his Kenyan father. NOT TRUE... Just another misinformed wannabe president Republican hypocrite.
I am finding it hard to believe in the year 2011we are still discussing the down side of being a single parent. Not all single parents are living off the "system". Some of us work everyday, take our children to school, Girl Scouts, swim lessons.....I am not sure why this person would think he could be someone's judge. I am a single Mother with an amazing daughter. She has never gone with out. I do not have a college education, but I am blessed with an amazing job. I have taught my daugter not to judge anyone.......we leave that to God. Maybe this uninformed person should do the same thing.
But it was OK when Palin's daughter did it? Who was much younger? Give me a break.
Each response is a bit correct; because times have changed since society shunned unmarried pregnant women and abortion was not an option. The advent of the "pill" and Roe vs Wade should not have changed society's perception but it did – in a big way. The problem I find with this situation is to assume that just because someone has enough dollars means they will/are a good or even competent parent. Those poorer income mother's may be just squeeking by but their kids may become more well-adjusted. As is always the case – time will tell.
I understand what he's saying about how most single mothers can't afford to hire a nanny or make all this money. However, not all single mothers are poor or uneducated. I'm a single mother and I have a good job and I'm educated with my Master's degree which I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees before I was 27. No I'm not rich and it's very hard being a single mother but my kids are not starving and I'm not on food stamps or Medicaid. My kids and I have Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance. So yes I see what he's saying but he really just needs to shut up cause if you're going to paint a picture paint the whole picture not half of what you "think" you know about single mothers. If he wants to target someone he should target MTV's I'm 16 & Pregnant, that's what sending out the wrong message about having children out of wedlock not Natalie Portman. Some people love to jump on their high horse when they think they have a point but really he doesn't have a point and he makes no sense! It's 2011 I think having kids unmarried is pretty normal now, and he just proved why he would never be president of NOTHING!
Bottom line: they're not married, they're having children, they're doing fine. All the rest is pious finger-pointing that should stop. Mr. Huckabee, you're not setting a good example for our children, finding fault with people who achieve and live happy, successful lives.
Boy, old Mike's been on a roll lately! Next thing you know he'll be accusing her of raising her child in Kenya. Or is it Indonesia?
I don't think its Huckabee's business. So what if she's unmarried and is pregnant? Its common! Famous people are no different than the rest of society. They just have loads of money. People shouldn't be nosy and pry into other people's lives. The man needs to shut his mouth.
Huckabee should know that not all single moms are on welfare. I have a bachlor's degree in Accounting and a job I've been at for 10 years. I made the mistake of falling for the wrong guy who left when his daughter was 3 weeks old. I say, he loss. And he really did lose out. Would I have liked to have been married? Sure, to the right person. But it doesn't make me a bad person. No I don't have a nanny and we struggle but I wouldn't trade her for the world. And my parents, who I'm sure wish I had met a nice man, got marriend and then had kids, lover her more than words can say. Huckabee go find something else to focus on – there are many other issues in the world that you can "try" to solve.
Who cares marriage is a religious thing anyway. And religion is stupid. Just take care of the kid if you're gonna have it.
Mr. Huckabee is a fool. Natalie Portman is a very well educated woman. Despite her financial success and stardom I'm fairly positive that with her Harvard degree she would be fully capable of getting a well paying job. Perhaps most unmarried mothers are poor, I understand that. This is irrelevant, unlike the majority of people, people such as Natalie and "Mr" Huckabee don't have to worry about such trivial things as money. So why then criticize another financially successful person? Because he is an over opinionated dick.
Hum...If he thinks Miss Portman is so horrible...I wonder what he has to say about that serial adulter, divorcer, and ethics violator Newt Gingrich? Reminds me of that idiot Dan Quayle. Republicans are so good at preaching morals to everyone else...too bad they don't think they should walk thier own talk....how typically Repulsive.
Did I somehow miss his condemning Bristol Palin's unwed pregnancy? Where is his troubled concern for how that TEENAGE pregnancy will affect US youth? Where was his concern about that UNEMPLOYED single mother's flaunting morals and decency with her baby bump???
But he probably can't see a difference between an employed college grad who is an adult and a jobless teen high school drop out. What about all those so called family values they're always patting themselves on the back for?
Why would anybody even care what this jerk has to say?!? Natalie Portman is Harvard educated beautiful talented woman! More power to her!
Will this nonsense ever end?
On TV, Natalie introduced Millepied to the world as her "fiance'", not "boyfriend". They plan to wed probably after the child is born. Does Mr Huckabee have better things to do?
Give me a break. She is engaged to the father of her child. She did not abort the child. Mike Hukabee needs to have restraight and stop judging. Is he perfect? I applaud Natalie Portman. I believe she is a role model. She is not getting in trouble with the law unlike some other young woman – neeed not name – they are obvious. She is now an academy award winning actress who works very hard. She is actually a role model in work ethic and graciousness. Okay, she is not married to her baby's father yet, but will be when they decide. Mike Hukabee mind your own business.
If these sanctimonious judgmental mean spirited right wingers ever get complete control of our culture and society, they'll be every bit as bad as the Taliban.
Little brown ring
Huckabee is politicking. He is playing to his base. This may help him in the primaries, but will it in the general election?
What a hypocrite! I bet he won’t say the same about Bristol Palin; she became famous due to being a single mother. Not every single mother is unemployed or taking government assistance. He needs to be more in touch with reality.
Ugh, here come the Republicans drumming up the same old, tired "family values" schtick. It would be nice if they spent their time and energy trying to solve real problems as opposed to demagoguing. Leave Portman (and all other unwed mothers) alone Huckabee! The fact that you are pulling this old trick out of the Republican hat only goes to show that you have no ideas and no solutions to address the numerous problems facing our nation.
The point is that Natalie Portman unfortunately is a bad example for the young women in this country, first of all she is not a good actress, I do not care for any of her movies, besides that these women think that being pregnant is cool; she should be ashamed of herself. I am sick and tired of all this so called 'movie stars' in Hollywood who are in the public eyes to have no moral values This woman, Natalie Portman is the same one who supported Roman Polanski, the child rapist. Shame on her.
Shut up idiot! Judge not lest ye be judged. Ms. Portman can live her life however she sees fit.
You want to talk about role models... How many teens; or anyone else for that matter, is being force fed every detail of Teen Mom's lives and loves every time we go to a check-out counter at a super market. Teen Moms are consistently on the covers of Us, Star, People etc. etc. Which is going to be a bigger influence on teens... Natalie Portman or Teen Mom.
Mike Huckabee should shut his big trap and not judge other people. Who the heck does he think he is? Judge others and you shall be judged.
Just again another politician pushing his/her religion onto us. Just about had all I can take
I couldn't agree more!
If he wanted to give her the most wonderful gift he would have given her a wedding ring?? Newsflash: He did give her a wedding ring and they are getting married, morons.
But if you can't be bothered to know where the President grew up and just casually say he was raised in a country he had never been to during his childhood, I guess you can't be expected to know if the Hollywood actress you are criticizing is married, single, engaged, divorced or anything else.
Ummm – it's her fiance? Duh! What's the argument exactly? Many unwed pregnant woman get engaged. Get over yourself and try focusing on real issues for once.
How about the male football, basketball, or baseball atheletes with a brood of children? One football player has a wife who was expecting his first child while her husband had twelve kids with other women (including four three year olds). Where's the shame in that?
I agree 100% it is time to take America back where we were with our morals (1960's). People are out of control and they don't have the values that should have been instilled in them by their parents.
Like blatant racism, discrimination against women, and corporate polluting. The 60s were awesome.
I see a lot of comments stating, in a nutshell, "Huckabee is stupid, because Natalie Portman can support her child." I don't believe Mike Huckabee was criticizing Natalie Portman for not being able to support her child as a single mother. As a matter of fact, he identifies Portman as one who is perfectly able to support a child out of wedlock. He then criticized Hollywood for glorifying single parenthood and out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
I don't think Portman is a good example of how Hollywood is glamorizing single parenthood, though. It's my understanding that she announced her engagement at the same time as her pregnancy.
Another common thing I see in the comments is one along the lines of "I'm a single parent and I do fine, so Huckabee is totally wrong." Once again, I don't believe Huckabee said that every single parent in the United States is poor. So, if you are a single parent who is doing well, financially, that doesn't necessarily disprove Huckabee's statements about many single parents in the US having to survive below the poverty line and being unable to afford the time or money to go to college.
It seems like this article could be twisting Huckabee's statement into an attack on Portman and all women who get pregnant at a young age, or out of wedlock. I know that he is a Christian with strong convictions about these things, but I would still like to see the whole interview. I'm curious about that parts that were left out.
Having said all of that, I'm inclined to agree that Natalie Portman's pregnancy is not like a typical out-of-wedlock pregnancy situation.
Typo: I'm curious about *the parts that were left out.
I don't begrudge Ms. Portman and fiancee on their upcoming parenthood; congrats to them. However, Mr. Huckabee has a point. I work in social/medical care: Many unmarried/out of wedlock pregnancies do not work out well in the long-run. Single motherhood has been wrongly *glamorized.* It's not glamorous for most women and their families; statistics bear this out. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either being politically correct or is ignorant.
I don't see Huckabee coming out against the Westboro church and it's disgraceful demonstrations and protests during military funerals.
Ok I usually don't comment, but this one really ticks me off. First of all I was that "Single Mother" however I was married but he left when times got hard and he couldn’t handle the pressure. However we still stayed legally married for 10 years. I live with my boyfriend now and we don’t share any biological children together but we both have kids from our prior relationships and I don’t call myself a single mother simply because we don’t have that paper or I his last name. We’ve been a blended family for 9 years am I a poor example to my children because I am not married to him. I don’t believe that. I don’t see what difference it makes or how much better it is simply because two people share a single piece of paper. How many couples (unmarried) with children live together? How many couples (unmarried) with children work for a living? Where are the numbers on that? I have a college education a job and I take care of my own as I have done since I had my first child at 18, so Mr. Huckabee what’s your take on that? Many people with no children live this way and mind you all single mothers don’t collect welfare, and all children of single mothers don't live in poverty or starve. Simply because you marry doesn’t grantee you will not become a single parent at some point. You will be a divorced single parent.
This issue here is not whether you are married, single, etc. The issue is can you provide well for your kids. Some married people can provide well for them and others cannot. Likewise, some single people can and others cannot. Having said that - Natalie P can provide well for her children and no one should criticize her.
He makes it sound like you should not be a single mom - which is BS. However - as a single mom – you should be a good provider.
funny how huckabee never puts any blame on the single father, who more often than not is completely MIA. but just blame the mother, women are stupid and incompetent, right huckabee?...typical male republican.
it's such a shame that women get the brunt of the scrutiny when it takes 2 to tango!
correct me if im wrong but didnt this "genious" pardon the guy that killed the four police officers in washington state? maybe he should be chastised.
Seen on Facebook:
“Yes, girls of America. Please, be more like Natalie Portman. Work hard at something you love for your whole life, earn a degree at a top ranked university, excel in science, & when you are independently wealthy, educated, & at the top of your craft, go ahead and have a kid. Though, you can’t expect the Huckabees of the world to judge you by the breadth of your accomplishments, but the content of your womb.”
does anyone remember dan quayle vs. murphy brown? at least this joker is targeting a flesh and blood person. nonetheless, it's all political grandstanding as hucky prepares to run for prez. ahhhh....the insanity has begun.
Did ge really say "out of children wedlock"?!?? Heh.
I think that she can afford to raise her child the way she wants. Maybe they have wedding plans. Maybe she doesn't want to get married. It's none of Mike Huckaby's business, and why does she have to be a role model anyway? I think MH needs to back the f off!
Shut the Huckabee up.
I think this useless pundit needs a nice steaming mug of Shut the Huck Up.
Anyone who thinks Huckabee, Gingrich or Palin have any place in public office need to have their heads examined.
Pretending to actually care about human beings.
They worship the almighty-dollar and thier corporate masters..and that is all. They could care less about human beings, Americans, or America.
natalie portman is not a single mom. she's engaged to the father of the baby. she's financially secure and intends to keep and raise the child. how is that a bad example? she's not jamie lynn spears
To paraphrase Stephen Sondheim "Gee Officer Huckabee...HUCK YOU!" This guy is obviously rallying the conservative base and trying to out Palin all the others with his simplistic version of the world. From questioning Obama's "Americanism" to this bit of nonsense, it's all about getting Mikey the 2012 nomination by staying in the headlines. Sadly this is just a taste of what our country will be enduring over the next year. But the "others" are finally starting to wake up and realize it's time to fight back against all of these so called populists who are really more elite than the people they so happily criticize. People have the power...the power to dream, to rule, to wrestle the world from fools (Patti Smith).
Does she want a wedding ring? Marriage is a choice, not an obligation.
Isn't it sad that we've all decided it's in our best interests to judge one another? Does any of this really solve problems? Does Mike Huckabee ranting about Natalie Portman, or the rebuttal remarks about Bristol Palin, serve any purpose other than to rampantly spew negativity?
I wish we could all learn to accept each other for our differences, respect those who have different beliefs, embrace tolerance and love for our human brother & sisters. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes, then you might feel a bit differently about harshly critiquing them. We all have pain, we all have made mistakes. Let's support each other instead of tearing each other down.
Now that's what I call WINNING! Heeheeeeee :)
Emily you are a scholar and saint. Thank you
what an ugly minded man.
Why doesn't Huckabee use Bristol Palin as an example? She's an unmarried mom raising her baby, who is also in the public eye. Has he forgotten her dancing with the stars debut? Wouldn't young girls also be poorly influenced by this Republican daughter, giving them them the same false iimpression of a glamorized single mother life as Natalie Portman supposedly is creating?? Oh wait.... I forgot, the Palins don't count. Really, the hypocrisy is too much.
This guy is a car accident.....you don't want to stop and look, but sometimes you can't help yourself....
Huckabee should show more concern over his terrible choices to let felons out of prison only to see them commit crimes again. He's a buffoon who should be euthanized. Hypocrite.
First of all, my mother was a single mother. she has an education and a job (actually 2 jobs while i was growing up.) we weren't "poor" because she was ignorant, jobless and living off of the government (actually the government never once helped, even when they were asked) however we were poor because my father didn't pay child support. my father didn't want to take care of the responsibility of his actions. Huckabee needs to learn that what others do in their personal lives is NONE of his business first off and second he should realize that by generalizing about certain parts of the population he leaves himself open to sounding extremely crass and unsympathetic to a situation that may not be caused by someone's lack of intellect or employment but rather by another human being's complete lack of responsibility and disrespect. GET OFF IT HUCKABEE, YOU ARE NOT PERFECT! JUDGE NOT, LEST YE SHALL BE JUDGED!
I'm a single mom, graduated and educated, have a job, have health insurance and my child has plenty of food to eat! I am a single mom because my husband passed away 2 yrs ago when my daughter was 16 mthd old. Stop stero typing single moms!!!
Huckabee is concerned about this child being raised by a single mother who has given birth out of wedlock, yet his state has the second highest divorce rate in the country which creates far more fragmented families than out of wed lock births ever could. Is this Hollywood’s fault too? I would suggest that he look closer to home. the religious establishments acceptance of divorce is the real culprit.
Ever since I read that Huckeberry Hound's teenage son was charged with torturing an animal to death, I feel differently about him. What kind of person raises that kind of child? Religious people think they have cornered the morality market.
My main problem with this is actually Huckabee promoting the idea that movie stars should be idolized. The notion that we as a society should idolize our movie stars and athletes is dumb.
GO MIKE HUCKABEE! How refreshing to have a politician who stands for God in a difficult place.
Yeah because your imaginary creator of the universe requires ants to stand up for him. Like what kind of god is so useless that it needs Mike freaking Huckabee to defend it.
Joel, you can see for yourself what kind of God he is when you meet Him.
Did your mother have any children that lived?
MYOB Huckabee. Why is it that christians always feel like they must push their religion on everyone else? News flash, godbots: fewer and fewer people care about your opinions.
Well said Mr. Gumby sir.
Mary (the mother of Jesus) was an unwed mother.
MARY WAS A VIRGIN. big difference!! natalie portman or whoever is NOT.
OMFG! Really? Welcome to the 21st Century ya hick!
She is a grown woman who made a grown up decision. She is not to blame for what other unwed mothers and teenage girls do. If you want to blame someone, then blame the parents of the other women. They make their choices, not by what celebrities do, but by their own thought processes. Politicians need to worry about correcting what the Republicans did during the Bush Administration and not what Natalie Portman did with her fiance'.
I completely agree!
For every single mother, somewhere out there is a single father. Got any words of wisdom for them, Mike, you bozo?
HA!!! What a schmuckabee!
Does anybody remember Dan Quayle? Didn't think so.
Yeah, I remember quayle. Wasn't he the politician who thought that there was a place in politics for his silly ultra conservative religious beliefs? Wasn't he another person who thought that he had some right to tell other people how to live based on what he believes? Or is the huckabee? Or limbaugh? Aren't they all the same person, really?
Oh yeah...Dan Quayle....he made such a big fuss out of fictional tv character Murphy Brown being a single mom & couldn't spell "potato" or something like that....hilarious.
Has Huckabee also attacked Bristol Palin for having a child out of wedlock, or is she off-limits because she's Sarah Palin's kid? And if Portman had decided to have an abortion, wouldn't Huckabee attack her for that, too?
Does Huckabee want her to abort the baby??? Bristol Palin had nothing to do with this. Leave her out of it.
I'm a single mom through divorce and I'm not offended at all by what Huckabee said. Having raised a child by myself I can honestly say IT WASN'T EASY! Would I have liked help? Yes. Would I have preferred to stay married? Yes. But it didn't happen that way and I ended up doing it alone. Whatever Huckabee is the issue he spoke about IS THE TRUTH and you all calling him an "idiot" or "in his own world" clearly haven't raised or not raising kids on your own. There will be many milestones in a child's life that at times you will wish you had the other parent there to share it with. But like a trooper you suppress how you really feel, move forward and don't let it affect your everyday duties. If I could choose a two parent home that would be my first choice, but you make the best out of your situation and try and raise healthy happy well adjusted children ALONE
Yes, but Natalie Portman is not a "single mother". She is not married, but she is not only still very much with the baby's father, they are planning to be married. So that point is moot.
Movie stars like Portman are humans and their lives includes challenging twists like everyone else. No one said that because Portman is famous she needs to live by a "code" to protect any one who follows her from ever making a bad decision. Let's grow up and stop pointing the finger and start working on real problems. I'd like to see Huckabee be more critical about his peers, in both parties, because then maybe some relevant changes could be made.
Apparently some of us are still stuck in the stone ages; women have been having children without being married for a very long time. It's not about "marriage" its about a child being wanted and having loving parents. What Natalie Portman does is none of Mike Huckabees business, maybe he should worry about doing his own job. I also agree with someone who posted abut MTV, they glorify teen pregnancy and idiotic behavior, maybe someone should critize them.
As the child of a single unwed mother I must say...
Mike Huckabee is a &(^^*&% stupid piece of *&^* *^&% sucking hypocrite
So your saying everyday of your single motherhood has been easy breezy? What are you people reading? You’re not understanding what he wrote. Did he put down single motherhood! No he said it is hard being a single mother for most of the undereducated everyday people out there! I'm a single mom too, with a six figure income and money wasn't the problem, having an extra person there to bare the burdens that was the problem. I'm not a superwoman doing it all myself was not easy. You guys want to sugar coat single motherhood, but woman need to know the raw gritty truth ITS NOT EASY! Sure you will make it, you have no choice, but the road down single motherhood is a bumpy one.
I will take this opportunity to praise all single mothers who are doing the toughest job out there. How dare someone like Huckabee and others condescend to people (single mothers) who have more integrity in their little finger than he does in his entire being?!?! And here's a newsflash–Barack Obama was raised by a single mother and guess what? He is President and I am sure you never will be!!! At least I will not be voting for you and I am sure that many, many others will not vote for you either!
What are you offended about and who are you offended for? I'm a single mother and his statement didn't offend me in the least because what he said is truth. ITS HARD DOING IT ALL ON YOUR OWN! Sure we single moms do it all and don’t speak a word of complaint to anyone not even the kids, but late at night when we're running through our long list of "to dos", we feel the burden of responsibility and we fight back the feeling of being overwhelmed. That's the truth of single motherhood and anyone who says different either has a GREAT family support system or are just lying to herself.
Huckabee's drinking his own Foxbrew Coolaid, expousing rareified air for pregnancy while telling lies about Obama.
Real presidential material!
There is a HUGE difference between being an unmarried couple having a baby and a single mother raising her child without a father. The latter being significantly more difficult. Natalie Portman's baby will presumably have both parents, and whether they are married at the time of conception is no one elses business.
Huckabee should lay off! As a politician, I'm sure he's no saint, so why is he judging others?
Huckabee is a joke. How can anyone come across as moral and righteous, with all their 'values', and at the same time have no values when it comes to people's healthcare being provided and protected...to value capitalism and big corporate profits, but de-value a persons right to jobs, education, etc. How can someone like him live with himself and justify going to church learning how to live a good life, being giving to others, look out for thy neighbor, and then minutes later argue against the common good when it comes to healthcare, education, jobs, etc.?
marriage first...they should try it. I've been married 22 years and then had two boys. The reason why this is the preferred method is because this is the way it works best. No regrets waiting until marriage for kids.
It was Mike Huckabee's son that killed a dog for fun, and was fired as a result. So, really Mike, you want to pick on Natalie? Really?
Huckabee and Medved–a couple of ignorant self-righteous wackjobs. Search their histories and you'll find illegitimate children, slave ownership, and white sheets, along with closeted ancestors typical of these neandrethals.
How dare he. My Mom was a single mother raising 5 children, she was not poor, uneducated or living on welfare. How dare you lump all people in the same category. Women who have lost their husbands in this war that the Fox News is so proud of are now single Mom's so I guess they are also, uneducated, poor and living on welfare. Mr. Huckabee you are an uneducated, uncaring, unsympathetic jerk who only sees the dollar amount in his own checkbook.
Thanks for the vote of confidence for all single Mom's you just makes us feel so warm inside...
Huck – it's none of your business dude. There are several young couples out there that are married and are STILL broke and starving. Stop being a preacher...... she's engaged to be married. Mind your own business.
Hukabee is trying to get buplicity, last week he talked about president obama and now is natelie portman.
Natalie Portman is a very talented actress. She was born in Israel and supports the Democratic Party. She's a graduate of Harvard and speaks several languages. She's supports animal rights and she has also supported antipoverty activities. She has traveled to Uganda, Guatemala, and Ecuador as the Ambassador of Hope for FINCA International, an organization that promotes micro-lending to help finance women-owned businesses in developing countries.
Of course Mike Huckabee doesn't find Natalie Portman to be a good role model. Who would want their child to graduate from Harvard. Oh did I mention she's an Oscar winner.
If a economically challenged woman gets pregnant out of wedlock, that's her own choice/mistake... why should NP have to live her life with that in mind. We all have free will.
Judge not lest ye be judged. Mathew 7:1. Oh wait Huckabee has never read the bible. Just a low rent bigot pretending to be a Christian.
I'm no fan of Huckabee, but that verse is actualy saying that you will be judged according to the same standard you judge others with. It's essentially saying "practice what you preach." So it's not applicable here unless Huckabee impregnated someone out of wedlock. Which I have no idea if he did, and don't really care, ha!
I think you are wrong about whether Mike Huckabee has read the Bible or not, the fact that you don't understand the Bible is what is concerning me. You insisting on misinterpreting what Mike Huckabee says is also bothersome. You people just get on a roll and feed off each other, then the truth doesn't matter.
I agree with you marky. Amen. Nearly everyone responding here to huckabees comments are totally off topic and out of context. Truth of the matter is that people DO idolize movie stars, and since countless stars have now got pregnant out of wedlock its gotten to the point where it is glamorized and idealized by people. I also find it ironic that Christians are attacked if they say anything that upsets "popularity" and labeled as "judgmental" when 85% of you on this comment board have been 3x more hateful and judgmental than anything that huckabee said – and it passes as totally justified. What is so horrific about having morals?? What is so awful about being married first?? It is what works the best for the sake of every member in the family. I think everyone knows this deep in their hearts, but pride and guilt doesn't allow us to admit it. So what if he singled out Natalie Portman? He could have said anyone's name. I also am happy to inform everyone that bristol palin tours the country advising girls to abstain and not make the decisions she did. Yall are greatly missing the point.
Didn't we already go through this nonsense with Dan Quayke v Murphy Brown?
Huckabee is a moron and he has no right to tell people that they are obligated to be married to have children. Republicans claim they want less government and yet they constantly invade people's private lives and criticize them.
I agree with him...Being a famous person carries some responsibility about their actions because it happens to be that a lot of people, including millions of teenagers that admire them and look up to them. Natalie was well respected and I was disappointed when I heard the news about her pregnancy with someone she just met and was dating less than 1 year. Because other people do it, it doesn't make it right and parents have to educate their kids about this and teach them better principles than what is out there reigning as the most popular.
Edith, it is apparent that you are schmuckabee's target audience. He is going to count on you to vote for him. Unfortunately there are many more people like you who would vote for an idiot like this because he espouses his christian values because he knows you won't see thru his charade and realize that he does and says these things because he believes it will help him will an election. Or, he might actually believe his rhetoric which actually makes him an even worse choice for a public service office. By the way, there Isn't actually anything wrong with Natalie Portman being pregnant and not being married yet.
Seems like someone is having a Dan Quayle moment! Guess it's ok for Bristol Palin who thrust herself into the limelight with the help of her "fame seeking" parents. What makes her any different Huck? And she's been flaunting it longer than Natalie. Just one question – do you think that the way that Sarah and the clan raise their children is the role model for America? Oh, but I can't say anything about ANY right wingers because they might get angry and start spouting their sanctimoneous hate filled rhetoric because someone had the NERVE to criticize them. Well, I just hope they all take their ball and go home!
His remark is ignorant at best. I am a single, unwed mother and I do it entirely alone. I don't receive state aid and I am far from uneducated, the indication that "most" single mothers are experiencing these issues is like saying that "most" tv hosts are hypocritcal idiots who need to get their facts straight and quit making outlandish remarks in an attempt to bring attention to yourself.
Congrats on your new family Natalie Portman!
Maybe Huckabee would prefer this "Hollywood" example then – Elton John waiting to have a child until he was married to David Furnish
A tired argument from the 80s. He sounds like 25 years ago.
Is Natalie Portman supposed to be ashamed of being pregnant? Is she supposed to try to hide it? Isn't it better to be unwed and love a child you are responsible for bringing into the world rather than be married and perhaps not fulfill those responsibilities? (which is far too prevalent in today's society). Too bad politicians don't try to do more about all the abused children out there – I haven't heard a single one make a crusade out of that issue!
He's an idiot.
I have voted Democrat my whole life... After this last election it is my belief that THEY ALL SUCK and are connected to BIG BUSINESS!
Natalie is a grown woman with more than enough financial security than anyone would ever need. The child will be raised well and go to the best schools. Natalie being a Harvard grad, I wouldn't expect anything less. Huck is just a political hack who is looking for a target. Instead of focusing on the real issue (young, jobless, uneducated people having children) he feels the need to attack a well respected woman in Portman. What a moron.
I really don't get why so many people have a problem with this situation. I MIGHT have agreed with Huckabee, for the fact that at first the article states that Portman is pregnant, and not married. Sure, it may send a wrong message to impressionable women. Majority of single mothers have a hard time supporting themselves and a kid, but the whole message here was that he's criticizing her for being pregnant and unwed... uh... Huckabee... did you miss something? SHE'S ENGAGED. To the FATHER of that child... so all of a sudden it's a huge moral problem that she's not officially married yet? She's not a single mother. She's 30 years old and taking care of herself and her family. I can't even believe people have something wrong to say about this situation.
Huckabbe is a complete tool. Moron.
It's a shame we can't all live the lives the Conservatives think we should! I'll take the argument of government intrusion and over reach with a grain of salt going forward I guess..... since apparently it's okay as a public figure and presidential candidate to openly criticize people about whether they should or should not get married, and when.
Sorry, but Mike is correct. Anyone saying that he is against keeping the child is either stupid or dishonest - he is speaking up for the children, who not only have the right to be born, but deserve to have their parents act like grownups and commit to marriage so the child has a family he can count on. Marriage is for the protection of the family - once you have children, it should become about them first, and self-centered adults make terrible parents.
Humm...Bristol Palin ???
Bristol Palin anyone?
Bristol Palin is not the one running her mouth. Huckabee is the one shooting off his mouth.
I think that Mr. Huckabee should be ashamed of himself. Even though I think people should wait till they are married to have kids but her situation does not make her a bad person. That is the problem with socity these days we should not be worshipping actors, models, or sports prayers. She is human just like everyone else and has a right to live her life so how she chooses. I do take offense to his comments when he says "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and would not get healthcare." I am a single mother and I am not poor nor uneducated. I don't live on public assistance and my child is not starving. I am a working class american trying to survive when the times are really tough at the moment. I think it is funny when you have politicians especially Republicans talking bad about people who don't fit there mold. It's easy to judge people both democrat and republican when you make so much money doing nothing to better our country while normal joe's struggle everyday. It makes me really made when I vote for officals and they don't do there jobs but they do not have to worry about money nor healthcare because working for goverment you are all set. It is not fair and I am truly sick of it.
Why wasnt he speaking out when his Fox co-worker and failed VP candidate Sarah Palin's daughter was pregnant, un-wed and not even out of high school ?
Typical....GOP/Tea Bagger hypocrisy !!
Huckabee.....chickapee. Hey Mike, please go back to that single-wide in the ultra rural hills of Arkansas, and take a nap or something. Leave responsible politics to the "intelligent" people in this country.
Huckabee is thinking about running for President, good thing he's tackling the important issues like.....Natalie Portman?
Wow. I can't wait for the day when people like this are laughed at everywhere they go. What a buffoon.
Why is this man, wasting his time on this matter. Why is he targeting Natalie Portman, when Kate Hudson is also pregnant and unmarried, not to mention Kourtney Kardashian, Halle Berry and numerous other celebrities that have had babies out of wedlock. I think people are so quick to jump on a soapbox. It is not a grown woman's responsibility to live her life according to what some one else thinks. Parents are the ones that should be the role model for their own children, but then you have so many parents themselves that had their kids out of wedlock. What is a society to do? Stop criticizing and stick to something you know about.
Mike Huckabee is your typical Southern politician who waves the flag, eats apple pie and rants and raves about being a Christian. In reality, he is your typical redneck used car salesman. He is ignorant and anyone besides his mother who takes him seriously is totally deluded. He is Sarah Palin ligh and she is an idiot, also.
I don't mind the flag-waving part but you're right, he is atypical of his older demographic. They just see things as so simplistic it's ridiculous.
Despite our liberal-minded environment, Huckabee is very right, if not specifically for moral traditions. Financially, wedlock LOWERS your taxes. Wedlock also forces a lot of young parents to become the one thing that our last few generations have consistently pampered them against doing: growing up and learning to cooperate (note how I avoided the term "compromise." I've seen young unmarried parents split apart because one is simply unwilling to overlook small problems or misgivings from their partner, and the fallout stays in place because pride (mistakening interpreted as "dignity") overshadows reason and keeps the resulting single parent locked in a lifetime of poverty. Let's not forget the harm that living without two parents does to children...let's just accept realities. Very few children from single parents will become that superstar that goes to an Ivy League or become some big time entrepreneur – they are much more likely to go jail. As backwards sounding as Huckabee seems, he has some words of wisdom for this generation.
I have 2 wonderful children, out of wedlock, and they are loved and healthy and perfectly normal. And guess what? I'm not a celebrity. Huckabee, why don't you go do something constructive with your time such as keeping the bigots at Westboro Baptist Church locked in their compounds. Leave Natalie Portman alone.
Saw this earlier today and it says it all – Huckabee and his cronies have no consistent message whatsoever, and really just don't want women to think for themselves...
I don't understand why this man is criticizing Natalie Portman. There are plenty of people, women AND men, who are single parents. Just because Natalie Portman is a single woman does not mean she's not going to be a good mother. I feel that she is showing the world that a woman can have the career of her dream and be a good parent. Huckabee needs to live her alone and worry about more important things.
Huckabee is correct. Most young, single Mothers can't afford to raise kids and it's the babie's Grandparents who get stuck with raising the kid and footing the bills.
Hollywood (including the Palin's) shouldn't act like an unwed, teen Mother is such a wonderfull life. Most young Mother's can't afford nannys and constant care for the kids ... the Grandparents get stuck with these kids and the expense involved.
You're right–the women of Hollywood should make sure they are wed to one of the many reliable men there are to choose from in Hollywood (all known for their lasting marriages)–in fact I think Charlie Sheen is available!
Anyone who bases major life decisions on what a wealthy Hollywood celebrity does needs his/her head examined.
By your logic, celebrities shouldn't spend their money on mansions, expensive cars, and designer clothes because 'regular people' may go into debt maxing out their umpteen credit cards trying to live a similar lifestyle.
NATALIE PORTMAN IS 30 YEARS OLD. You people (including Huckabee) criticizing her and people like her just paint this illusion that all unwed mothers are teenage HS dropouts with no future.
*cough cough Bristol Palin cough*
Come on Mike. Don't you remember Dan Q & Murphy Brown?
"Huckabee believes Portman is presenting a distorted image with her pregnancy."
Hollywood presenting a distorted image....really....duh!
The economy's in rough shape, unemployment is high, we're being bled dry by two wars that seem to have no end in sight, and this is what he chooses to get upset about? Nice to know where his priorities are!
Last I checked, she was still with her fiancee. How does that make her a single mom?
Who in the he!! is he to publicly single out Natalie Portman, who is a grown woman, quite successful, and living in a free country that her personal choices are bad examples? Never mind that she is engaged to be married, is he saying that if her fiance wasn't in the picture and she chose to have the baby on her own, that is a bad example? Does he honestly think that women everywhere see Hollywood "starlets" having babies without being married and that somehow we will frivolously decide that having a baby out of wedlock is, like, a cool thing to do? He has no respect for the women of this country. He thinks that we do not have brains, should not be in charge of our bodies, and that yes, Eve spoiled it for every one. What a moron.
why didnt he ever say anything about his friend palins kid?
HELLO, it took 2 people to make this baby. Why criticize the mom but not the dad? Our society expects the female to be the one to say no, that's why. That, and the fact that she's the one that carries the baby. If you want to criticize, Mr. Huckabee, that's your business, but remember her fiance was not only equally responsible for the pregnancy, but may have been cheating on his live-in girlfriend if Natalie is as far preggo as she looks. Why don't we acknowledge men's responsibility for preventing pregnancy?
Yeah–thanks for prrotecting all the women out there Mike Hucakabee because we're so simple-minded we need a great mind like yours to think for us.
Thank you for pointing this out. Every time a conservative goes on a rant about abortion or single parenting, they ALWAYS target the woman, laying all the blame or responsibility on her. They never talk about the man's role or responsibility. Love, relationships, marriage and pregnancy are much more complicated than conservatives like to paint it with their black and white views.
I believe in marriage. But quite frankly it their business. May I add that if he is gonna cast the first stone he should really careful it doesn't hit him back. People who do this usually do see their own short comings.
he is a hypocrite and liar; he is holier than thou when criticizing natalie portman; last week, huckabee was repeatedly publicly stating president obama was raised in kenya when he knew flat that wasn't true; in other words, how does he come off criticizing anyone?
i bet he likes to get stabbed where he farts...
Why doesn't Mike Huckabee blame the men? If these men are so great why aren't the women married to them? Probably in many cases because they don't want to be, probably because these men showed their true colors and the women actually felt they and their children would be BETTER off without the father around all the time. It must be nice for someone like Mike Huckabee to have such a simplistic view of the situation of single mothers. Another man spouting off about what is best for women. Keep judging people–that really makes a great leader. I will not vote for you!
Marriage isn't sacred...no one follows any rules any more and you have a 50% chance of ending up divorced... then you have to pay for a divorce and your more broke then you started off with... every child has 2 parents. just so happens some parents choose to leave.. make it simple and dont get married, waste of money. a relationship is built out of love and respect and if you have that good luck!
His opinion doesn't jive with his arguement. His arguement is saying that poor people shouldn't have children not unmarried people.
Huckabee is out of touch with the 21st century. He's an idiot.
If mr Huckbee is using natalie portman as a platform, he's a bigger idiot than i thought. The slate of gop's for 2012 is the worst lineup i've ever seen. And please pass a law that palin cant leave alaska for the rest of her lifetime. I not partisan, i vote for whoever can do the best job, and folks, they're going to have to come up with something else, that at least sounds intelligible.
I agree with Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Medved. It is problematic. "It is unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of having children wedlock."
No one is "glamorizing teenage pregancy" you idiot. If anyone should be ciriticized, it should be Bristol Palin or the girls on 16 and pregnant or whatever that show's name was. Natalie Portman and Benjamin are GETTING MARRIED, she's also got a good job and she's got an education. she is NOT a 'single mother' You ignorant idiot. What's Bristol Palin? A 16 year old, high school DROP OUT (did bristol go to harvard? no, she did not. Natalie did) and pregnant at whatever age she was pregnant at,who lives with her momma still and has no job except for being on dancing with the stars. Kty.
You huff dink.
Interesting that Mr. Huckabee sounds like he is defending GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS that help single Moms. Sounds like something a Democrat would say~
Sheesh...people have always had "children out of wedlock" long long before it became the thing for Hollywood stars to do. Besides being married doesn't guarantee anything, my husband left me when my child was less than a yr old and I had to raise her myself w/no support from him or anyone else he didn't even give her emotional support; and we both (daughter and I) turned into successful responsible adults. Marriage is way over-rated.
You both might be successful and responsible, but there are deep rooted issues psychologically that result from being a single parent or the child of a single parent whether its from never getting married, the father leaves, the mother leaves, or divorce or death happens.we ask ourselves why our society has so many problems – the answer lies in the destruction of the family unit. Psychological repercussions are not comparable to how successful or responsible a person is or becomes. and yes, I grew up in a divorced single parent home and struggle with psychological repercussions from that. I'm sorry, but your blinders are on if you're saying there are no problems or issues with being a single parent. Not being married only teaches our children to have commitment problems and just to go around and sleep with whomever you want and have kids and that can be your "family." Sorry but that's not okay.
Gitmo is still open, troups are still dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, and administration is sabre-rattling over invading Libya, and he's sticking his nose in Natalie Portman's personal life. All of these guys need to be voted out of office. It's disgusting.
Oh my lord, Seriously? He was asked by the interviewer about what he thought about the topic!
Once upon a time a piece of paper wasnt needed (or invented) for two ppl to be in a committed relationship. That is mans invention. Also...didnt his son torture and kill an innocent dog? And that was hushed up? Teach morals in ur own household before u point fingers at other ppls. Oh yeah and heres a thought...concerned about single mothers on welfare? Make the dads help!
Does he not have anything better to do with his time and his own pubic position?
If that was a typo, yoshi, it was certainly the most accurate and hilarious typo I've seen in a long time. Kudos.
Really? Natalie Portman is who he wants to criticize? A clear example of how he is out of touch with identifying the real problems in America. I can certainly guarantee you it's NOT the weathly unwed mature adult women of American that is the problem.
"Out of children wedlock"???!!! C'mon Huckabee! Grammar FIRST!!!!
Where is his criticism of Bristol Palin? She's hardly a typical teen mom in the US yet, more than Natalie Portman, seems to make herself a spokesperson.
Loren: You have never heard anything about her in the papers her life has always been private and she won't complain about the paparazzi following her because she is not a news worthy celebrity her life in fact is pretty normal. I have followed this womens career since day one and there's not much to talk about. In fact i have met her father on many occasions and they live a fairly quiet simple life.
Why ain't he complainin' about Charlie Sheen and his fine behavior? Wacky!
Will all women planning on becoming pregnant because Natalie Portman is please raise your hand!
Huckabee huffs dink.
Most commentators here are missing his point. His point is simply that NP is a very successful but unfortunately unrealistic portrayal of a situation that leaves many women struggling to make ends meet. This isn't an attack on single mothers. He's not saying that you can't be a single mother and successfully raise your children. He is simply saying that if you choose to go this route, expect it to be more difficult than glamorous (and are there REALLY any single parents out there who would refute the reality of this??).
No his point is to make another publicity stunt statement. He has no business – NO BUSINESS – commenting on Ms. Portman's personal life. She is not a poor single mother and the fact that she is pregnant should be celebrated and congratulated, not scorned. He wouldn't comment if she were a man. Consider this – how many Hollywood men who have impregnated women does he point a finger at for having children out of wedlock? How many Hollywood men, or men in general, come under his attack for being a "bad example" to other men out there when they help conceive a child? He is a hypocrite and poorly informed.
This isn't an attack on single mothers? Huckabee says
"Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care." Most, not some, not just a few... most. The worst kind of steroetyping.
My son's father walked out on us, so my choice was to make the best of it and raise my son as best I can. Life is about choices. If you want to be happy – do so! If you want to be the best parent (single or married) do so! If you choose to be the "product" of a single parent household, that is a choice you are making. My son does see his dad every other weekend – and he does have both of us. It is a choice that I am making to help him be well rounded, make good decisons, and live happy – all choices we make.
Portman is 30 and capable of supporting herself very comfortably. Sounds like a model mother to me.
Didn't Dan Quayle say the same thing about Murphy Brown in the 80s?
Consider the source (a Fox News host). Don't Republicans hate everyone, anyway?
Natalie Portman....pregnant.......she is very hot indeed.....
Let huck a nut rant. He doesnt have a chance in hell of becoming the next POTUS. Its about jobs atm not about social issues. Repuclicans need to quit changing the subject.
Not everyone believes in marriage first and then children but either way you look at it she is a grown woman and can make her own decisions and she isn't going to have any financial trouble raising a child I'm sure. I can see the concern if she were a teenager but she's an adult.
Benjamin DID give her a wedding ring!
Huckabee is a moron. What about little miss Palin????? Where was the outcry?? He is such a hypocrite, but then, hypocrisy is the Republican mantra.
Careful Mike, not your place, not your fight. Stick to the important topics, the media is looking for anything they can to discredit you in any way they can, you know the drill. Anyone with common sense, morals and values, knows 'right from wrong'. People choose their paths, unfortunately innocents get caught in the middle, it's been going on since the beginning of time, this is nothing new, people are just more 'open' about it now. Celebrities are America's royalty, funny how that happened and how 'we' all allowed that to happen. Pray, stay on task. Let this one go.
What an offensive piece of garbage. Mike Huckabee should find something else to preach about.
I guess Mike Huckabee doesn't need to look at the US Census Bureau data before issuing a misogynistic rant about motherhood in the United States. But what would I expect from the right? Oh, and Mike, she's not a starlet, she's an Oscar winner. She's an artist. And it's entirely possible that she will love her child as much every other single and married and divorced mother currently residing in the United States. Heaven forbid she actually serve as a role model for responsible behavior for having successfully navigated teen stardom, Harvard University, and her career. No, let's instead label her irresponsible and a blight upon our civilization. Nice touch, Mike.
Oh, and Mike, the US census bureau lists the percentage of children receiving medicaid at 22% and food stamps at 23%. This would seem to indicate that MOST of the single mothers are doing fine for their children. But the truth is seldom convenient to the right, now, is it?
Where were his comments when Bristol Palin was knocked up? What an idiot.
This is funny, out of all the things that can be said, its none of his business, and needs to look at himself,
this is not something earth moving, do you job, and stop telling and preaching to the world, what makes
you perfect....first of all your in polictics...and today thats a bad thing. to all of us never heard...in the end
we are going to hell, for one reason or another...
I'm tired of people bashing other people(celebs) "for sending the wrong message for young people". Anyone in the media should not be the role model for children – THE PARENTS ARE!! if you have a child that looks at Miley Cyrus or Natalie Portman as an example on how to live their lives then their parents FAILED! Charles Barkley said this years ago, "I am not a role model for your children." and he's right. The bashing of people smoking on TV or in movies, the crap they put on MTV or anything on TV or film is for entertainment purposes only – not to teach your children to make good choices in life – that's YOUR job as a parent. Children should be looking at the life of their parents as an example of good behavior and if that parent happens to be a single parent then so be it. it should be a lesson on how to handle life when it doesn't go according to plan. If someone CHOOSES to be a single parent then it's their job to teach that child that you can still live a good life and be a good, decent person and be a single parent. If they became a single parent due to a poor decision (no protection) then it's your job to teach your child how to turn that poor decision into having the best life and how to overcome and persevere when life doesn't go exactly how you planned. That's YOUR job – not a celebrity.
I'd love to know what an ultra hypocritical conservative like Huckabee thought about HS drop-out Bristol Palin's pregnancy out-of-wedlock with her boyfriend Jordache or Dockers, or whatever the heck you want to call him. Natalie Portman is a 30 year old adult with a good head on her soldiers with a focus on life. She doesn't need to "Dance with the Stars" or to publish a book to gain notoriety.
I will tell you what I think.
Bristol Palin graduated with her HS classmates as a teenage mom. It was not easy but she did it with the help of her family. The father of her son is a dead beat dad. Bristol Palin is raising her son on her own and doing a good job. She is providing for her son and is blessed for the opportunities that are out there becasue of her famous mom. The girl has paid a price though because she has been trashed inside/out by everybody.
So for now, Bristol does not need Huckabee looking her way.
OK Huck...you just lost me forever with this idiotic comment. So much generalizing, no hard facts. This sounds like a new variation of the classic right wing rant about "those immoral sodomites of Hollywood" whose example is sending us all down the path to the flames of hell!
You know what hell really is? Being trapped in endless self-righteous judgement like 'ol Huck seems to live in. Leave the wonderful young responsible actress alone and clean up your own judgemental mind. Nuff said!
Brain you raise a good point. Popeople do not want the unwed mother (who ever she is ) to have an abortion so other than abstance what is the alturnative – Adoption!!!!
Mr Huckabee...what about Bristol Palin?!
What an idiot.
Huckabee is correct.
Are you stupid? LOL. He should be talking about Bristol Palin, she's some UNMARRIED teenager who has gotten alot of publicity for nothing. Sorry, but the republicans are retards.
You are ABSOLUTELY right~Debulator.
#1 I am not going to be paying for NAtalie Portman's baby so i do not have a right to complain.
#2 Shows like 16 and pregnant where kids are getting pregnant just to be on the show are much more influencial than some "old" actress having a child with her FUTURE HSUBAND.
#3 Which brings me to the fact they are going to get married.
#4 This from a man who think s that the President was born in Kenya.
Obama still has NEVER produced his birth certificate. If he didn't have something to hide, a birth certificate is something that is EASILY found.
How does being married make you a better parent?? Good parents single or married are still good parents. As long as people are in a committed relationship with each other and are good parents to their children what does it matter if they have a piece of paper from a state saying they are married?? Perfect example of how the older generations do not have a grasp on what life is currenly like now...its not 1950 anymore Mike!
Geez folks, he used her b/c right now she is everywhere. She just won and Oscar and before that all anyone was talking about was how she would dress for the awards and stuff. He said Natilie Portman and others like her. We all know what he meant. And sorry but statics show that single parents do have a more difficult time. As the old saying goes "first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a baby carriage" I understand that she is engaged, but most of hollywood gets engaged while pregnant then never go thru w/ the wedding. While under people know these hollywood folks should not be role models younger ones may see it differently and if they dont have parents that teach them, then they are left to make up their own mind. Huck was just stating truths.....
Let me say this once and for all to ALL the single mothers out there STOP trying to justify being a single mother. I grew up in a single parent home and let me tell you IT IS NOT EASY my mom had money and was a hardworking business woman BUT there is nothing I mean nothing that can replace the FATHER figure in a childs life. I still love my dad after all said and done and I wish I spent more time with him . I'm 30 now but I still remember when he left like yesterday. I think its very ignorant to go about stating how your kids are fine let me tell you now, they are not fine. A girls need her father and boy needs his father even if its once a month. So do everything in your power to make that happen and STOP trying to be both parents.
Most women who end up being single mothers don't choose to be that way. Most times, either a mutual separation happens or the man just flat out leaves-which is what you said happened to your family. Then you have a mother who loves her child and does everything she can to fill that gap. Shame on you for not praising your mother for being the parent who stayed by your side. Why is the focus on the mothers who stay and raise their families and not on the men who are not there?
So this is one of the problems that I have with what you said. While it is clear that you still have pain over your father not being around as much as you would have liked please understand that no woman who lives a normal life chooses to be a single mom. It is not something most of us wanted for our children. So don't just assume that we want to play both roles. To assume that a woman hasn't done everything in her power to keep her family together is absurd. Perhaps the father is physically, verbally or emotionally abusive. Maybe he is an alcoholic or addicted to drugs. For me these things didn't even show up until after the baby got here and the pressure was too much for him. Most women are single moms because the dad has nothing positive to bring to the table. So I would rather my children be mad at me than abused by a man who helped create them. Period
My son's father passed away when he was four-months-old. I guess he is just doomed and I should just give up trying to be "both" parents now. Thanks!
Meg......having the memory of a father that is dead and was present in your life probably wont give you the same insecurity of knowing your father is alive and not in your life.....you deal with two different scenarios and can not compare the two , none of which is worse or better. but the insecurity that comes with the latter is what i am talking about.
those saying single mothers can't help it or don't choose i do understand but when you go around BOASTING like some ppl on this thread and stating how your kids are FINE because you have the money and education and so that should be enough is WHAT concerns me. i have seen mothers who for this particular reason either 1) don't tell the father of the children 2)fight with the father so the kids don't see him forgetting completely about the kids . 3) bad mouth the father.
and then go around claiming they are WONDER WOMEN when the kids suffer in silence
If you had a dead beat dad, I'm sorry for you. However, my mother and father divorced when I was very little and he was and still is very much a part of my life. His financial situation is one where he couldn't really contribute much in terms of child support, but the love was still there. My sisters and I turned out much better being raised by my single mother than we would have if our parents stayed together, fighting all the time. Not all single parents fit the same mold, and in this day and age, most children will end up being raised by single parents or unwed parents. This does not mean that both parents don't love them, they are just no longer in love with each other.
Charlie Sheen children was in a married two parent household??????? Enough said!
Not everyone gets married in this day and age. Look at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, why isn't he criticizing them? And really with the track record that a lot of celebrities have, why should they get married?
Anyone who looks to celebrities as the perfect example of parenting or marriage is just stupid anyway.
This is exactly what huckabee is referring to. So many celebrities have had (and are having) children outside of marriage that it has become normalized. Your comment proves that 100%. Morality is lost whenever a person "does whatever THEY think is okay" because of a selfish desire for pleasure and not thinking of anyone but themselves. And just because someone is successful and makes millions doesn't give them a hall pass to be idolized for their immoral decisions. Everyone is born with a moral compass – its just a matter of who will listen and who will ignore.
And do you really think he had enough time in his FIVE minute interview to list the countless celebs who have had kids without getting married? Hopefully you exercise more logical thinking in your own personal life than what your comment displays.
I am a single mom, worked all my life and my 2 daughters went and graduated from college earning their BA's in their respective programs. ALL SINGLE moms and their children are not undeducated and poor. Do something productive instead of judging everyone else, or better yet keep your mouth shut ! ! ! .
You don't have to be married to have kids, just like you don't have to have kids just because you're married.
There is nothing wrong with having a child and not being married, life doesn't have guidlines only surprises and pain. Natalie Portman isn't the only female to be pregnant and not married and she won't be the last. Mr. Huckabee... use your time more effectively and try to resist the urge to voice your thoughts.
The degree of ignorance on here is astounding. Once again a quote has been taken out of context and utilized as a tool for furthering partisan objectives. I am neither a Huckabee supporter or detractor but if one reads the interview, he was asked a question specifically about Natalie Portman and gave his opinion on the topic; this was not an attempt to single out/attack Natalie Portman specifically. I was the product of a single-parent home and my mother was wonderful, but I definitely suffered the effects of not having a male role model in my life.
I agre .is She having baby at Walmart?
Do children not starve if they are born in a marriage?
Mike, please understand one thing, she is making millions on movies. Of course she will hire these people. How about you go after the Palin clan, casue they are the example everyone wants to follow. After all there are not many moms going on Dancing with the Stars. Thanks MOM! O and lest we forget the money she makes from speaking engagments. But yes criticize Ms. Portman for haivng a baby and not being married but engaged. then again what do i know!
Hello, lots of women on "dancing w/ the stars" are moms. If you were a mom and had a mouth to feed and they offered you a spot on the showing paying an outragous amount I am sure you would take it too...Mike said "and others like her" you only single one contestant out....
So Huckabee runs his fat mouth and you want to blame Bristol Palin. Why is the woman always the one getting blamed?
Let's hear what you have to say about Huckabee a former preacher that condems a woman that is pregnant and can take care of her child but Huckaee had not problem forgiving a convited felon and making him eligible for parole. Nine years later the convicted violent felon that was out of jail because of Huckabee killed four people in Oakland, CA.
Where was his ranting and raving when Bristol Palin was preggers?? Very biased and hypocritical... There are plenty of unfit mothers out there, married and all. Just because she is not married does not make her an awful person or an unfit mother in any way. And she's 30, not 16. She has every right to decide if and when she wants to have a child. And she's NOT flaunting it or glorifying it at all. I think she's a perfectly fine young woman to look up to, and it's completely unfair to single her out.
Um....there was TON of ranting and ravings about Bristol getting pregnant. He didnt say Natalie was a bad person he just stated that people in hollywood like natalie shouldnt be role models and they should get married....
I couldn't find a single article which talked about Huckabee's negative reaction to Bristol Palin's pregnancy. Of course it was controversial, but you really think the Republicans themselves would want to rub salt in the wound by degrading the daughter of the 2008 Vice Presidential Nominee?
I guess my point is that it's not right to single out certain people for the choices they make. He needed to address the topic on a more broad basis, not to name names. The only reason Natalie is being ridiculed is because she's not married, or maybe also because she's wealthy. It's very judgmental to base someone's parenting skills on whether they're married or not.
Stay focus, this story has nothing to do with Bristol Palin. Huckabee is the one running his mouth, not Bristol Palin.
REALLY HUCKABEE.... go find a rock to hide under. She is a beautiful talented woman, and ENGAGED to the father of her child. Not some dumb 16 year old who only wants a BABY DADDY to pay child support so she can sit on the couch and eat chips!
I am a single mother. I am very educated, I have a career that I love, and I am on public aid because my company doesn't offer insurance and I can't afford it. But that doesn't meant that I'm dirt poor. I know my child is taken care of. I'd rather be broke by spending money on her than throwing it away on junk. I am very offended by Huckabee's views of single mothers.
What Mr. Huckabee and many others forget to realize is Celebrities of any caliber are not meant to be role models for anyone of any age. They are people just like anyone else. Role models should be Parents, siblings, family members teachers all the people in your lives who should be setting the good examples. He states: "Not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses," he says. "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.
Well my response to that is....then don't get pregnant! It's pretty simple use birth control you can get it free at any clinic. I am so tired of hearing of these single mothers with 5 kids 5 baby daddies and we are paying the bills for them. Believe me my heart goes out to all the Single mothers everywhere who have had their husband or boyfriends either pass away or have an unfortunate accident or a valid hardship those situations I have complete support and sympathy for but some of these women who just don't know how to say NO or don't SIMPLY protect themselves from pregnancy I say enough is enough already if you have 1 child that the state is already paying for and you go and have another then you should have to assume the resposibilty. My parents had 5 children and both worked hard to take care of us no one gave them anything people are getting to used to hand outs in this country not that I would ever want a child to do without food or medical care but there has to be a line drawn some where so the people that do the right thing and work hard aren't always paying for other peoples irresponsibilities. Ok I will get off my soap box for today.
While celebrities are not menat to b role models, they end up in the role because society takes its cues from what's happening in the world. The more visible the activity, the more likely it is to be emulated. And while that showshow stupid people can be, people can be stupid. Natalie Portman should understand that if she wants to keep her private life private, she needs to shut up about it. I can't wait to hear her complain about papparazzi following her around to take pictures of her child.
"People" are getting used to handouts in this country, corporations are used to handouts in this country. Eliminating ALL corporate taxes in Ohio and then stripping workers of their rights to make up the budget difference is un-American!
LOREN: Why does Natalie Portman have to shut up about her home life? All she said was that she was pregnant and engaged. This dude is complaining about her and people like her. As far as I know, she hasn't said anything in response to him complaining about this or that. As far as I know, she couldn't care less what he says or thinks. She might not even have heard anything about it. So why is she the wrong one here? Huckabee is just trying to get his name in the news. He'll never be president.
Yeah, why don't they just go to Planned Parenthood already??
Oh, wait . . . . .
Natalie Portman got engaged after finding out she was pregnant. She is the wrong person to be singling out for this complaint. She and her fiance are doing the responsible thing.
Funny...I didn't hear him criticize Bristol Pailin or the fantastic parenting job Sarah Palin did with her!
Totally agree. Funny how the Republicans and/or Tea Party members can dish it out to everyone but their own.
Thank you! I was thinking the same thing.
I agree. Portman is a nearly 30-year-old woman that is well educated, has an income, seems very thoughtful, and is in a committed relationship. Bristol Pailin was a teenager dependent on her parents and seemed to choose a boy that would most upset her parents.
I agree!! Why was there no mention of Bristol Palin? And he can't use the excuse that Sarah and her husband were there to help out, he does not know if Nat's parents or her fiancee's parents are helping or not – it's their own business anyway.
Totally agree! Huckabee should criticize the teen mom Bristol and her fame-hungry mother. Bristol doesn't even measure up to 1/100th of Natalie's intelligence and achievement. Bristol is totally a FAKE as a youth activist preaching against teen pregnancy when she herself was one.
Natalie is a well educated (BA from Harvard and graduate work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), multi-lingual, young lady who is not your typical Hollywood Star. Everything points to her being a great and caring parent. Mazal Tov, Natalie.
Navarre- I am pretty sure that no matter which side of the political field you are in, that hypocrisy. Democrats too! A dem/liberal would be way more willing to condemn someone on the other side than one of their own.
Really, I agree with him that marriage is the most desirable way to bring a child into this world. But, stuff happens and every baby is a blessing. I don't think it is his place to criticize her. Nor do I think it is our job to uphold her on any sort of pedestal. She's just a person living life. Let it be!
This story has nothing to do with Bristol Palin. It has to do with Huckabee running his big mouth where it does not belong. Natalie Portman is a grown woman and can take care of herself and her child. Huckabee needs to shut-up.
Sarah Palin raised her daughter to take responsibility for her own action and she did. The girl is raising her son on her own and providing for most of the Childs’s need except for some child support from the dead beat dad.
I don’t see Bristol collecting welfare checks or food stamps or asking for others to provide for her care and the baby’s care.
She has owned up to being a teenage mother and doesn’t recommend it to other teens. She recommends that you don’t get pregnant period until you are ready and can afford to take care of your children yourself.
Agreed! I really wish they had asked him the difference between the two so we could watch him stammer. This is the same man who, when asked about his opposition to gay marriage cited the "Yuck factor" as a reason. Real presidential material.
I agree totally with him. What's the point of having kids but not married. Having kids are for married couples only..
Nat Portman is dumb..!!!
Either your 12 or have failed the GED test. Please don't procreate Einstein. *sigh*
T'ch, she's not dumb. People like you are dumb.
Hard to believe you said that... one can consider marraige is a social configuration or a religious tenet.. either way it is an aritifical contruct. Having children is normal and a biological necessity. Having kids is not just for married couples...
I wish she would have my baby
Ashleigh, I don't agree with Huckabee, there is nothing that says you need to be married to have kids. does that mean that if you live with an alchoholic, abusive spouse you must keep your child(ren) in that environment – I think not! Look at Goldie Hawn, she's been with Kurt Russel 25 years! and they have a wonderful family unit. It's not about the piece of paper, it's about the love & repesct you have for one another and the child(ren). If Mr. Huckabee is so worried about the poverty of unwed mothers, he should take some of his fortune and pay-it-forward to help them out – it comes bakc ten-fold. BTW my mother was single (until I was older) and we didn't lack for a thing, I had everything I needed. I am a Christian who believes God loves everyone!
That's her personal choice and a good one, too. She's engaged in case you don't know it and she's a very intelligent person (unlike you?). Huckabee just wants attention to himself. Natalie is not preaching to people to not get married and get pregnant; she's just proud of her unborn baby and her fiance, which is great. Where was he when Julia Roberts stole a very married man from his pregnant wife and small children? Isn't adultery worse than getting pregrant by the batchelo one is engaged to?
Ignorant, ignorant man. I am a single parent making more money than some two parent households. My child is probably more well rounded and happy, as well, than children in many two parent households that hate each other and are always fighting.
You are the exception, Michelle. I know of several single parents who manage just fine. But I also see the dark side of poverty, broken homes, and single parents. I deal with many people from single parent homes, and they become part of a vicious cycle where they don't feel good enough about themselves to try and better their home life. I encourage you to get involved in your community to look for these kind of people who need encouragement. Trust me . . . they are there. I used to think homeless people and unimagineable poverty people were not living in my rural community. I was gravely mistaken.
I agree. Really? "Most" single moms are poor? Statistics, please, Mike Huckabee.
Same here! I make a good salary, have a good education and provide well for my child. Does he think I should have stayed with my abusive husband instead?
Look it up. Here's one sentence as proof. Fro an actual survey.
"The ranks of poor single mothers have grown since the 1996 welfare overhaul that weakened their safety net, and 30 percent now live with neither job income nor public assistance. http://www.womensenews.org/images/Welfare-3657.gif"
Here's another line from a different article and same results. Again look it up.
"Nevertheless, more than one-third of families led by single mothers still live below the poverty level, census data show. Many who left welfare rolls in the 1990s simply nudged themselves up to "working poor" status and are particularly vulnerable to the economic slowdown since then, said William O'Hare of the Annie E.Casey Foundation, a child advocacy group"
Your an Ignorant Ignorant woman. No cares how much you make. It's not about you. It's about all those teenage girls seeing their idols having kids out of wedlock and thinking it is OK for them to do it too. Get over yourself
Amen sister! My parents got divorced when I was 6. She raised 3 girls mostly on her own and we're all well-adjusted, successful, happy women. My dad always had and always will have a relationship with us, he just makes less than what I do 1 year out of college! My mom makes more than my fiance and I combined... times two. Huckabee seems to forget that many single parents in this country were at one time married to the father/mother of their children. Teenage mothers are one thing, hardworking single parents are a completely different story.
Right On Michelle good to know Im not alone!
What part of "fiancee" is difficult for this idiot to understand? This Huckabee git makes it sound like being a single parent is the equivalent of a death sentence......I know plenty of single parents who are more than capable of providing a good life for their children, and I know just as many married parents who have no business raising children, or instances where one parent is all but non-existent anyway. According to him, you're not qualified to be a parent if you are unmarried or make more than 100K a year.
He probably understands every part of "fiance", just as the rest of us do. It still only means "we are screwing" and we might get hitched. How many "fiances" have never become husbands?
Here is a better question that your post should have asked. Once he found out that she was pregnant, why not just go ahead and get married? Why the delay? If you are "going to" why not just "do"? That is a much better question than the one you asked
I have absoluetly no love, or even like, for Huckabee, but he is right. All of this glorification of unwed Hollywood women, and I am not only talking about Natalie, but what about the others who make it the "fad" to have babies out of wedlock (including Sarah Palin's daughter), is counter-productive. The danger is that we are normalizing that behaviour by maiking it seem okay and a totally acceptable thing to do. And the teen pregenancy show and the MTV programs are just absolutely totally irresponsible and wreckless.
What about all the women in Hollywood who DO get married and DO have children within wedlock and their husbands treat them like crap, cheat on them, etc.? Why doesn't Mike Huckabee address that instead of singling out Natalie
Portman or any other unmarried mother?
That is an entirely different issue. I agree with you that husband abuse is something that should be addressed. There are also other examples of behavior that Hollywood plays up that should be addressed too, such as glorifying jerks like Charlie Sheen, who are nothing but rebelious kids who were never disciplined by his parents, glorifying women who steal husbands, like Angelina Jolie. But you have to take each bad example one at a time.
The fact is that Natalie, Sarah Palin's daughter, Nicole Richie, Halle Berry, etc are all seiinng bad examples
@George Smith – No one should feel rushed into getting married. There wouldn't even be such a thing as "fiance" or "engaged" if there wasn't a period in between. Every relationship is different, and people do what works best for them, no matter what the reasons may be. So many people feel like they have to get married, especially when they're pregnant, and a lot of times it ends in divorce. Marriage is a HUGE commitment, and when the time is right than so be it, but it's not always the second you fall in love. I actually applaud Natalie and her fiance for waiting. Here's a question for you: What's the point in rushing it??
Please, spare me the defense of Huckabee. He is picking on a young woman for political gain.
Will his unabiding support for marriage lead him to attack Newt "sorry about your cancer honey but I want to divorce you and marry my intern" Gingrich? Nah.
Will he cravenly suck up to Rush Limbaugh who treats marriage like a rental agreement? Of course he will.
This gutless excuse for a candidate could have attacked Bristol Palin for appearing on not one but two reality shows and for writing book all because she is a famous single mom but he doesn't do that because he is afraid of angering Sarah Palin's followers.
He is just taking a cheap shot at a woman who, after finding out she was pregnant, is marrying the baby's father which Republicans like him used to want to encourage via tax breaks.
Nothing but a bully pure and simple. Like the masses who go mental everytime Bristol Palin gets criticized but will be strangely silent this time around.
"Fiancee" is always the Hollywood word for boyfriend. Especially when the girlfriend is pregnant.
Most of them never get married.
Maybe she should be married but she seems to be in a committed relationship or at least committed by Hollywood standards. Does that make it easier and set a better example, sure. But why single her out? Should Huckabee live in a smaller house and drive a more modest car so he sets a better example in these tough economic times? No, he has worked hard and put himself in the position to afford such thing. What happened to the party of personal responsibility?
Hollywood is the movies, it's not real life, Mike. And neither are the starlets boobs or teeth, or even their name. Is this an example of how he would be as president, picking a fight with a pregnant woman who can clearly provide for her child? Maybe he needs to go back to his backwater town and preach, where that kind of thinking is still welcomed.
If Natalie Portman's boobs are not real she should get her money back.
BeerBrewerDan, you just made my day buddy. Good stuff
Agree totally! No 1 gets married today. They just have kids and don't care about What is best for the kids.
Kids don't care about a piece of paper! All they care about is having two parents who love them and will care for them unconditionally.
We're taking parenting advise from someone to lazy to write out the word "one" eh?
People DO marry these days, but unfortunately a lot feel it's not necessary, and it's just easier to get a girl pregnant. Or in the words of the father of my two grandchildren; "Marriage is old-fashioned". Which is one of the reasons why I am SOOOO glad they did not marry, and are no longer together. Unfortunately, though, my daughter does not have the means that Ms. Portman and others have. Natalie Portman is just one of the many celebrities that have chosen this route, and have it appear acceptable to many.
And by the way, it's "No ONE", not "No 1". People are also very lazy at spelling.
I like Huckabee. Keep saying things like this that make no sense, I probably won't vote for him after all.
Marriage has nothing to with whether you're a fit parent. Just because some single parents are unfit doesn't make everyone unfit. That's completely ignorant...
Does this mean since us gay folk can't get married, we simply must forego raising a family?
So what you're saying is that someone should get married if they are pregnant, even if the person they are having a child with is abusive, or they can't stand to be in the same room together or they are fighting all of the time? How exactly is that best for the kid? What's best for the child is stability – in whatever form works for everyone- and to have parents who love them. Not necessarily parents who are married. My parents didnt believe in divorce, yet I wish they had – they fought constantly and my brother and I were caught in the middle. Get your head out of your a&& and realize that marriage isnt the magic answer!!
BAHhahaha! Good point.
Two men or two women, cannot give birth to children without third party intervention every single time. So, marriage isn't necessary for gays. Yes, a few chose artificial insemination and other options but those are outliers and don't much contribute to replacement taxpayers.
A more reasonable target for Huckabee would be MTV, which has made celebs out of teenage pregnant girls who do not have the means for raising a child. At least Natalie's baby will be sufficiently cared for.
First they are against abortion, now it's keeping the child. I wish they would make up thier minds!!!
Huchabee lives on his own world. No president is going to change today's woman's behaviour. Mr. Huchabee might get some votes for his presidential bit but I am willing to take bets that he will not get the republican primary nomination.
Just keep writing books sir, do your Fox gig and enjoy the Florida weather, in your mansion.
These guys are superb con artists. They keep the Regular Joe Repubs stirred up over god, welfare, abortion, immigration while they really work for the corporate interests who care nothing for their family values.
But that's his point. These girls on MTV take their cues from what they see like Portman being a single mom and don't realize that they will never be able to care for the child as they should because they don't make millions and they probably won't finish high school
it's hollywood, he's lucky if she doesn't have the baby while in rehab, then sell it for drugs
As a single parent who's not poor, has an MBA, has a job, has well-fed kids, and isn't on government assistance, Mike Huckabee's arrogantly closed mind has kiss my @**. The idea of Mike Huckabee preaching to ANYONE about morals and ethics is laughable. I guess I should find a trophy wife to cheat on and teach my kids to defraud their State government and exploit their elected office for personal gain. Then Huckabee might approve of me.
Unlike, most of the single women in this county, she actually has MONEY.. ha ha ha.. She can easily afford this.. There is no comparison with real people. Besides she could hire probably the nicest guy in the world as a role model someday too. It's doesn't matter when you have this much money.
mostly @A – To single out Natalie Portman as being one of the sole reasons why teen or wedlock pregnancy is being glorified is ridiculous, and THAT'S what he's saying. If he were making a general statement about this topic as a WHOLE and not calling out specific people, then I can understand it, but you can't single out one person, who I feel has nothing to do with teen pregnancy and is in no way flaunting or glorifying this. And Natalie is 30, not 16. She has every right to decide when and if she has a child. And Matt's right, I think she's a great example of a mother, regardless of if she's married or not. There are plenty of unfit parents out there who ARE married.
I think Matt's point is instead of focusing on one irrelevant person, maybe he should go out to speak to high schools and voice his concerns in a more constructive and productive way.
Just what we need in the White House. A Baptist minister. Gawd help us!
Who's Mike Huckabee?
I agree with Huckabee. That is what is wrong with the country now we don't have morals anymore. If we had the morals that our ancestors had, the country would be a lot better. People can smooth it over by every excuse they can find, but the bottom line is we have got to bring good morals back into the country.
Huckabee is so right! Fox is so right to air his opinion! Hooray for judgemental conservatives! Having a child out of wedlock should be wholeheartedly condemned, not celebrated! I am sure Huckabee and Fox have the same message for Bristol Palin....cricket, cricket....
Huckabee's soscial value is nothing compared to Portman's.
Last time I checked she was engaged to be married....I don't think she qualifies as a single parent.
My first response was to say what a jerk Huckabee is. But then again, Hollywood talks all the time about politicians. Hmm, that's a good one...
Perhaps you should stop worrying about other people and worry about yourself. Natalie probably has no significance in your life what so ever. So calm down, no one is hurting you. And get real, a normal woman is not going to decide to get pregnant without being married because natalie portman did it. If you are in love and chose to have a child, It shouldn't matter if you are married or not.
Has Huckabee ever critisized Sarah Palin's daughter for being unwed and having a baby? Of course not. She is a fellow Rebublican. At least Natalie Portman is engaged and even if she wasn't, makes enough money to provide very well for her baby. Fair and balanced. Yeah right.
@A the girls on teen mom got pregnant to be on TV long before portman got pregnant. Teen Mom has been around muhc longer than 7ish months. so you can't blame Portman for the girls on Teen Mom.
People...he did not single her out, he was asked specifically about her and commented accordingly. you may not agree with him but it's not like he's on a Natalie portman bashing crusade. He answered a freaking question. READ THE STORY...the problem these days are not repubs or dems it's the public in general either not giving the whole story or reading & not paying attention to the whole story.
Don't blame this stupid remark on Bristol Palin. She is not the one that said it. Huckabee is the one with the big stupid mouth.
We should never let anybody near the WH that was a minister.
@A The problem with your extremely flawed anaology is that Ms. Portman is already engaged. And they will likely be married before or soon after the birth of her child. SO she will likely never, or only for a short time be "a single mother".
Natalie Portman lives in the spotlight, and it's not like she has a reputation of having flings. When she did become pregnant she became engaged to the father of the baby. How about wishing her some happiness insetead of trying to condemn her.
I read some of these replies and I have to ask, "Did you even read this article before you posted?" Mike Huckabee answered a specific question during an interview, did not insult Natalie Portman, or anyone else, and gets blasted because you don't like Republicans, period. I have a daughter who had a child while unmarried, and truthfully, none of my Christian friends turned on her, treated her badly, or have treated the child badly in any way. That doesn't change the fact he wishes every day he had a father, nor does it change how difficult it's been to meet his needs with only us to help. No one seems to recognize what effect our decisions have on the child–the child seems to be the least important person in all of your equations. That's what Mike Huckabee is saying..... He didn't criticize Natalie or any other person. It's also getting old to hear you say no Republican says anything about Bristol Palin; they've said plenty, but you don't listen to the truth, just your own opinion. How about you pay attention to the facts instead of blindly complaining just because another lib did?
Thank you, it doesnt matter if shes out of wedlock. Shes old enough to have a family whether or not she is married. MTV is glorifying have babies when these kids are babies themselves.
What about your grandson's father? He had a choice in staying around as well?
Even if Huckabee wasn't slamming Natalie Portman, he WAS criticizing single mothers in general. Yes, single moms are often poor and rarely in a position to actually raise their children, but what about the fathers? Why must we always harp on young women who get pregnant and the not the men who helped put them in that situation? Trust me, very few people who get pregnant out of wedlock when they're poor and can barely afford to feed themselves do it on purpose. Would you rather they abort? Give up their children for adoption (unless you're white, the chances of your baby being adopted are slim to nill)?
Vintage Lydia, the fact is that she got pregnant using 2 kinds of BC, and he walked straight out the door when he found out she was pregnant. Guys don't always stay around the way we hope they will, and without marriage, the courts can't make them and society doesn't either.
While everyone is singing and dancing about the heroic single moms and how the dads can be around all they want; what about Halle Berry and how she's dragging her baby's father through court just because he wants regular visitation and to be on the birth certificate. I see that all the time; once the baby gets here, Mom thinks it's all hers and every decision is, too. Once again, court would decide, if there was a marriage.
Hey I love Natalie Portman !! No matter what i loved her as Padme. She can Act, she deserved that Oscar for Black Swan. It was a great movie. Whether the public likes it or not she got Pregnant !!!! It happens it's a fact of life. Sometimes u don't expect it. Sometimes life just happens and Sometimes Mr Huck. Even if u are Married your Husband Leaves or Dies that's Life. It Shouldn't matter if u have one parent or 2. Reguardless people get all wrapped up in that "Perfect Family" Setting. When In Reality if u Have 1 Good Parent Thats all u need.
This guy is a complete moron. The child has loving parents that have the means to provide. Who cares if they are married or not married. Since half of marriages fail what exactly is his point? 50% success rate is ok? What he should be preaching is planned parenting. Parenting when you have the means financiAlly and emotionally to deal with raising a child. Marriage has nothing to do with this. False logic.
Here's reality, so his words are truth: Single mothers were twice as likely as their married counterparts to be in financial hardship, despite being twice as likely to be in full-time employment. Both of these factors were independently associated with onset in single mothers. The link between them and onset was via their association with humiliating or entrapping severe life events. Single parents were at a much raised risk of experiencing these events. Onset was also more likely to follow such an event when women had poor self-esteem and lack of support, both of which were more common among single mothers. These risk factors were more frequently found among those in financial hardship. Financial hardship was also related to risk of having a chronic episode (lasting at least a year), of which single parents were also at greater risk. The majority of chronic episodes among single mothers had their origins in prior marital difficulties or widowhood and rates of chronicity reduced with length of time spent in single parenthood. to begin with, since huckabee is a babtist minister, I believe it is a violation of seperation of church and state that he
even run for public office. He has NO business commenting on someone elses life but his own, BUT since he has,
he is now fair game. I'm sure that his "opinion" has something to do with no one wanting to "DO" his own children, I mean look at those obese, ugly prodginy.
Mind your own business mr. huckabee
A baby is always a gift, in or out of marriage.

Separation of church and state means that the government can never dictate what religion/denomination you are to practice. To word differently, there will never be one government dictated denomination that all US citizens are forced to practice. It does not mean that God cannot be included in politics, its quite the opposite. This has been taken out of context by the (most often liberal) media to pursue their own agenda. Please reference where the term "wall of separation between church and state" originated from: Thomas Jeffersons letter in response to the Danbury Baptists. The reason why we came to America in the firstplace was to escape religious oppression in England. Not everyone wanted to be a part of the Church of England and Jefferson was assuring the danbury Baptists that this oppression would not happen over here in America. Know your history, because media loves to distort and brainwash. Google me, I'm a history buff and I know I'm correct.
