Happy Valen-birth-iversary on 'Modern Family'

"What were we even fighting about?"

Unfortunately for Phil Dunphy, that question was quite literal on Wednesday night's "Modern Family."

When Claire asked him if he understood why she was upset, he said, "I do..." followed by "not" in his confessional. At one point he wished her a "Happy Valen...birth...iversary!" to cover all the bases.

(So, what did Phil do wrong? Take your pick. As Gloria said, "You don't do one thing wrong, you do everything wrong!" Turns out it had to do with a wedge salad, of all things.)

He also wanted to avoid Claire's "little... habit at the mall" as much as possible, so he asked for Gloria to cut his hair, while Jay took Claire to the mall.

As for that little habit, it seemed that Claire really, really enjoyed getting massages at the mall. As Jay put it, "You sound like a Tijuana prostitute."

Jay wanted to get away from Gloria as well, because he immediately regretted giving her a karaoke set. Quite frankly, her singing was atrocious, and once again, Sofia Vergara gets the MVP for being such a good sport at making herself look foolish for a great joke.

At the same time, Phil was not the only one with a listening problem. Mitchell forgot to mail Cam's invitations for a benefit he was throwing.

When Cam found out, he called and named the guest list: "So far it's anger, betrayal, anger and sadness. Congratulations, you packed the house!"

Luke was helping out Cam, which didn't work out too well. (Alex would have been a better choice, and in some ways, a better plot.)

However, one of the funnier plot lines in a packed episode was Haley pretending to work at a restaurant, and Alex being the only family member to figure it out. Claire and Phil's fight ended up "getting her fired," naturally.

Loved the ending too, with Manny putting a stop to Gloria's karaoke, calling Jay a "coward!"

Like I said, there was a lot going on here, so it was somewhat hit-or-miss... though, as you know, when "Modern Family" hits, it's as good as it gets.

This is such a great show! The writing is very witty! I have followed this show for the longest time and was shocked to hear them talk about combining the holidays... funny concept. I immediately thought about birthiversary.com that i'm a member of. I was laughing so hard because people really do forget the holidays, birthdays, etc. I wonder if the writers for Modern Family got their idea for this from http://www.birthiversary.com ???

    Anyways, great show!!

I agree with Sean. I laughed everytime the hair cut scene was on. That and Luke trying to dial Mitchell for Cam. This show is great.

Must agree with Sean...the whole haircut scene was hysterical. Phil is twitchy when he's around Gloria to begin with, but when's he's sitting there, trying to explain his not knowing what the fight with Claire was about, and Gloria has her left breast in his face or the scissors to his throat... I just couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Each time I watch Modern Family, there are always one or two moments during the show that I laugh out loud. Last night's episode was so hilarious that the laughter was non-stop. Can we please skip the nominations and just give Ty an Emmy already? The haircut scene with him and Gloria, Clair and the massage chair, Haley at the resteraunt, Luke and Cam...all FANTASTIC!! This show just gets better and better 🙂
