Denise Richards on Sheen: It's difficult on our daughters

As her ex-husband Charlie Sheen continues to struggle with sobriety, Denise Richards says she isn’t surprised by his latest round of troubles.

"I mean, you know, this is Charlie’s lifestyle," she says on today's edition of "The View," addressing Barbara Walters' question about Sheen's substance abuse, partying with porn stars and recent tell-all radio interview. "He makes no bones about it. And it is what it is."

While Richards says she doesn't want to judge her ex, she definitely is concerned about how Sheen's problems will affect their daughters Sam, 6, and Lola, 5.

"It’s a very difficult situation in dealing with the subject," she says of trying to explain the situation to her daughters. "This has been something I have dealt with for years. This is not a new situation. There are times where his life is more colorful than others, more public than others, and as the kids get older it’s a difficult thing," she admits. "I’m learning as I go too. I have never had to deal with this and this was a subject I had hoped to talk with my children about as they got older."

The actress adds that she has been relying on books to help explain addiction to her daughters.

"There are images and pictures that a child can understand," she says. "I don’t know what they fully comprehend from these conversations...They don’t know what some of these things are. So I do the best I can and it’s not easy."

Denise shouldn't be making any comments about Charlie. She should maintain a low profile for those kids sake. She was one of those women who made the unfortunate mistake of marrying a man she loved and thought she could change. Only Charlie can change Charlie.

@Samantha – I'm just curious. Why are you tripping on punctuation on an entertainment blog? If it hurts your eyes wear some shades, or better yet don't look at all! Good grief!

  3. Loser Richards

Gotta agree 100% with jillcobb – Richards knew Charlie Sheen was a druggie/drinker/ho-chaser when she hooked up with him. I never understood why she had two kids. I guess she was looking to the future when her looks, body and career go south.

"...she definitely is concerned about how Sheen's problems will affect their daughters Sam, 6, and Lola, 5."

It's a little late to worry about that. She knew this guy was a train wreck when she met him. But instead of running in the opposite direction (like anyone with a smidge of common sense would do) she married the loser. And then she proceeded to have not one, but two, children with him. What he is doing to his children is reprehensible, but Denise, girl, you bear some responsibility for this, too. Unfortunately, it's your children who are suffering as a result of your poor judgement.

Yes, pray for them because one day your kids will need them and thank God if they are recovered and able to be there sober for their kids. My son who is now 21, his father died of an overdose when he was 13. This has really affected him and I recently had an intervention for him and now he is in rehab. Thank God he said he wanted help and was ready, he didn't have to be forced. We have to remember that sometimes this illness runs in families. So parents, love and take care of your children.

There are ALOT of us single moms/dads out here raising young ones on our own due to their spouse/ex-spouse being absent due to addiction, or the other horrible fact that they are gone because they overdosed before they could recover. The main thing that helped me and my children was to get into counseling asap! It can be found at no cost or a sliding scale for those who don't have the means for it. The responsible parent should try to keep life as normal and routine as possible. Make sure that meals are cooked, house is clean, kids get to practice, etc. Yeah it's hard so enlist the help of friends, family and neighbors when possible. Don't talk badly about the absent parent in front of the children. Make it a rule that the absent parent can not have visitation unless there is supervision by a mutual friend/relative who can be trusted. Have this specifically stated in the visitation or restraining order. Most importantly, try to remember this is a disease that people can and do recover from. Pray for them

Wow...by reading these comments you can tell how ignorant most humans are. How is this not here business when this is the father of her children? Hopefully Charlie realizes his mistakes and his children won't have to visit his grave to speak to their father.

Best thing Denise can do is to be honest and don't protect your kids from knowing the truth.

Denise Richards said: "I mean, you know, this is Charlie’s lifestyle"

    Dear Denise,

So don't whine about the position you put yourself in there, sweetcheeks. Nobody made you have kids with the guy. It's as much your fault if your kids are having a hard time as it is his. If you were that freaking concerned, you'd be teaching women not to date the 'bad guy'. Gee, now there's two more kids who'll have a tendency towards substance abuse and all the other BS Charlie Sheen does. But thanks for your life being our 'entertainment'.

Gotta love it when a woman has kids with a moron and then blames the moron for her own shortsightedness.

By all means party but know when to stop!
Unfortunately Charlie Sheen doesnt know that or doesnt care.
What a dissapointment he must be to his family. He just doesnt have the will power to sort himself out.

He had the chance for a terrific life, he threw it away. I have no sympathy for him.

As long as Charlie has people around to enable him, he won't hit bottom. Everyone needs to stop helping him, so he can see how pathetic his situation really is. Then, maybe, he'll work on saving himself.

That is the problem that addicts face. How can you possibly help yourself if you don't think you have a problem? The same goes for Lindsey Lohan.

I think you people need to look beyond the obvious fact that "The View" is essentially a cackle-fest. The point to take away from this story is if you're addicted, you're affecting ALL around you. Yeah, Charlie, good job dragging your young daughters into the middle of your "functional addiction.' Your a great example for all of us...Now pass me my crackpipe, I have a board meeting in 10 minutes!

Personally ive been on BOTH sides of addiction...ive been the addict and now im a recovering addict and i must admit its not pleasant to have to deal with the past and all that i put my children and loved ones through. Even today it still hurts...as i think about myself as an addict it was a variety of things that triggered it all...first because of depression then i noticed that people with similar problems were into drugs so it was all ok...then as the years went by it became all a problem i still suffer from pain and depression as some family members dont accept my sobriety as it really is...but i still continue to fight for what is right. THE FREEDOM I HAVE AND THE TIME I SPEND WITH MY CHILDREN IS WHAT I DESIRE...GOD HAS MADE THIS ALL POSSIBLE FOR ME!
