Look! It's 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

Don't call it the Spider-Man reboot — the upcoming 3-D spectacle starring the web-slinging superhero now has an official new name: "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Sony announced the film's title yesterday, reports Entertainment Weekly, and the studio also unveiled the photo of actor Andrew Garfield in full costume — mask and all.

"I feel like a kid in my pajamas," Garfield has said of donning the Spidey suit. "I can only say how it feels and it feels pretty special. It feels like a dream realized and a fantasy realized. I don't take it lightly and I feel incredibly lucky that I get to wear spandex for the next few months."

Tobey Maguire, who played Spider-Man in three earlier films, is also a fan of the scalier, edgier outfit. "I think they did a great job with the design of it," he has said, "and I'm excited to see it in action."

He'll get his wish when "The Amazing Spider-Man" soars into theaters in July 2012.

What happens if Spidey needs to take a leak or take a dump while wearing the spidey suit. Can his super human strength hold it in until after subduing the bad guys?

Quit overthinking this stuff; it's fantasy. It's based on a comic book, which is open to interpretation by each creative team. A "reboot" is perfectly acceptable; most comic books change creative teams every couple of years, so this reinterpretation is standard procedure, in a sense. Moreover, Tobey Maguire and co. are all TOO OLD! Spiderman, like other superheroes, does not age–he must be either a teenager, or a guy in his twenties in order for the character to make sense; this "reboot" is necessary for that reason alone. This costume actually looks like its derived somewhat from Todd MacFarlene's artwork in the 1990's run of the comic book, which is very cool! I think this movie will be good. I hear that they are going to feature The Lizard, one of my favorite Spiderman villians!

The raised webbing looked ok, but the more I saw it I felt like, man that kid really put a lot of money and effort into that costume. The Raimi costume looked like too much imo, and looked too expensive for peter parker to afford since he was basically broke for all 3 films. To me it doesn't matter if it's a reboot. That's meaningless. Batman Begins is a reboot and I don't think anybody would tell me that it wasn't hugely successful.

Well the 3rd one had problems with the studio and the director wanting different things. But in any case, I do like this new costume. I think the color template for it is way better than the old one. This one looks ... I dunno.. grittier I wanna say?

When someone uses "gritty" as a positive description, I advise them to put a handful of sand into a bowl of ice cream and see if there is an improvement...

Regardless of what they want to call it, a reboot is exactly what it is, and for a hugely successful series of excellent films (minus the disappointing third) that are not even 10 years old yet, a reboot seems painfully unnecessary. The redesign of the suit, of which the original is an unmatched classic, is also kind of silly-looking. The suit from Raimi's films added texture and raised webbing but left the pattern of the suit alone, and it looked perfect. This suit looks decidedly "meh", but the comic book nerd in me is vehemently shaking his head "no"...

I agree. The first two were good but the third was the stinker... I wouldn't call that cursed, either.
