Henry Cavill to star as Superman

"The Tudors" star Henry Cavill's career is about to soar to new heights: The Brit actor has officially landed the coveted role as the Man of Steel in the upcoming Superman movie reboot.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” the movie's director, Zack Snyder, says of Cavill. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 27-year-old Cavill beat out fellow Brit Matthew Goode, "White Collar" star Matthew Bomer, "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello and "The Social Network's" Armie Hammer for the part of Clark Kent's alter ego.

But this isn't the first time Cavill has attempted to play superhero. He previously tried out for 2006's "Superman Returns" but lost the role to Brandon Routh and was beat out by Christian Bale for 2005's "Batman Begins."

The new Superman movie is expected to fly into theaters in December 2012.

What do you think of Cavill's casting?

I say that now that a Brit is playing Superman, all bets are off! An American can now play 007! Screw it! Let's have James Bond be a midget! Oh, I forgot it's "little person" now. And let's see what the reaction would be if an actor born and raised in the United States was suddenly cast as the 12th Doctor.

Tom Welling has played Clark Kent for the past ten years. Smallville is the longest running Sci-Fi show in history. Evidently he has done something right. For those that say Smallville is far fetched and claim to be true fans, then they would know that the show lines up almost identical to the Superboy comics of the 50's. Tom Welling has come fullcircle as an actor and he could easily pull the part off and he should. I think WB is slapping all Smallville and superman fans in the face by not choosing Tom Welling. Regardless if you like his red leather jacket or not, Chris Reeves and Tom Welling will always be Superman.

Just because Tom Welling has been playing Clark Kent for ten years does not mean he should graduate to the big screen.

His Superman/Clark Kent is very different from what has been protrayed on the comic books and movies, so I'm not sure he'd be an instant hit if he was cast.

This Cavill fellow looks like he can do the part justice. I say let the man give it a shot and then cast your judgments.

Even if Tom never played the part in Smallville, and both Cavil,Welling are actor from another TV series , you could see that Mr. Welling has the looks and is better suited to play the part.Yes will see what he can do ,cause we now have no choice. No matter how this movie does financially and critically with Tom it would have been better. In my opinion it will not be a success.

Im a huge Flash fan and rumors on his film are that the crew from the Green Lantern film is doing him. A CGI suit???... talk about s***! But with the new Superman you got the Batman and Dark Knight guys helping out so it should be good.

I'm disappointed that Brandon Routh wasn't hired again as he was in my opinion a great Superman, though the script he was dealing with didn't do him any favors. As far as Mr. Cavill goes, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and wait and see. By the way, as to who the "real" persona is, despite his vast power and alien heritage, Superman ultimately sees himself as a midwestern farm boy who's values come from being raised in an honest, loving, and straight-forward manner by his adoptive parents. This is how most writers portray him.

for all those claiming superman has to be America...you are missing the point. siegal and shuster were actually both Jewish and used the character as a metaphor for the immigrant experience. superman, is the ultimate immigrant who comes to love respect and even fight for his adopted land (first America and then earth)..in fact some of the best superman stories I remember are when the writers stress that he is an alien and use that to add depth to the character. remember superman (ka-el) is his real self and Clark Kent is his alter..so hopefully this non American actor can bring this depth to the character

I think this is a good choice. Brandon Routh was not good as Superman, and Superman Returns was an atrocious film and a blemish to the Superman legacy, so I'm glad they're rebooting it. Everything from the plot to the treatment of the characters to the lack of a real villain (ANOTHER land grab scheme by Lex Luthor?? That alerady happened in Superman I) made that movie terrible. I'm looking forward to Cavill with oversight by Christopher Nolan.

Ugh! No offense to Mr. Cavill , I'm sure he's a fine actor, but another brit? Seriously? There weren't any American actors qualified for the part? Yes, it is true that Superman is an alien, however he was raised as an American and fought for American values. Although he may have been drawn by a Canadian he is an American hero. He should be played by an American.

Well, I guess you will forever be super disappointed, because many great leaders were not American. Superman was, as you have remarkably figured out, is alien. He would have no ties to any Earth races, speak with no dialect or accent, and very well could speak various languages. Plus, many actors have and do pull off the "American image" and "dialect" and yet not be of this country. The whole persona of acting and film making is the concept of making make-believe, real and entertaining.

Well I guess you forgot that Superman was raised in the USA (although ficticious American town of Smallville). And as I recall fights for "Truth, Justice, and the American way". Of course that is no longer PC. As for the dialect, I imagine having spent his youth in Smallvile, it would be American english. Regardless of whether he could speak other languages too. An American character created, at the time, for an American audience. Yes, many great historical figure in American history were not American. Seems an irrelevant point.

But we're not going to put up with any more Brits playing American Superheroes. And I'm gonna guess the new numbers are about to reflect that. Tom Welling should be considered. Smallville was a great series. He would do the role justice on the big screen. Smallville already had the Justice League elements in it. I would preffer to see a story about the JL and all of the characters then just another Superman reboot movie.

And knowing the Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captn America, etc) of Marvel Comics fame is coming maybe DC Comics (in typical Hollywood fashion) will do their own Justice League. I would rather see Tom Welling in that as Superman.

I agree. I liked Superman Returns and I liked Brandon Routh in the role. They should've let Bryan Singer make the second movie since it was going to be a different story than Luthor's tired real estate plots. The problem is that, even when it made over $200 million in the US and another $200 or $300 million overseas, Warner Brothers spent so much money trying to relaunch the franchise over the years, that they pretty much broke out close to even, and they were expecting Superman Returns to be as profitable as Lord of the Rings, or Spider-Man. Plus, all the backlash from moviegoers made them reboot the franchise.

Christian Bale is a brit. I don't see any of you whining about that. I thought Brandon Routh did a great job, and is a shame he won't get to go further with the role, but I like Cavill in The Tudors, and look forward to seeing what Snyder, Nolan, and Cavill can bring to Supes. We NEED a great Superman movie.

Christian Bale was the worst Batman cast for the role. OK, maybe tied with Val Killer. What's with that ridiculous voice he used when he was Batman. The Dark Knight had great writers, that made it a great movie. Not Bale. He only an average actor.

No disrespect to this actor, but this has become a tiring trend in "comic book" movies. When one doesn't do well, reboot the franchise. Come on Hollywood, show some backbone! Either stick with the people you have and make a good sequel, or retire the franchise for AT LEAST 10 years before trying again.

Actually, I could care less if the actor's British, American, or Kenyan, as long as they play the character as American. But this should cut all ways. Traditional Brits and Belgians shouldn't get in an uproar if James Bond or Tintin is played by an American.

I agree with your post, YOUBRO, but lose the caps because it makes you look like you're insane and shouting from a rooftop. I live in Hollywood where you can throw a rock and hit an unknown actor, so what is it with every new show casting a Brit or an Aussie as a pretend American? There ARE many many very talented American actors here (no, I'm not an actor). This is almost as offensive as getting a white guy to where blackface and play a black man. I don't think the "but he's a good actor" flies in either case.

I think tom welling won't do it because, when smallville first came out, there was an agreement between welling and the producers of the show that there would be a no tights/no flying rule, because welling didn't want to be forever associated with the traditional superman. In smallville, he doesn't really fly. He leaps long distances. He can't fly yet, as Jor-el hasn't told him how to. And in season 9, we catch a glimpse of the red and blue super tights, but he never wears them. I adore Tom Welling and wish he WOULD someday consider playing superman. I don't agree that british actor should play an American super hero. It would not have been fitting to have an American play Harry Potter or any of those guys. :)

Thank god they hired an ACTOR this time, and not a Reeve-lookalike. For those "not in the know", not only was Cavill the second choice (behind Bale) to play Batman, he was also the second choice to play James Bond, but lost to Daniel Craig because they felt Cavill was too young for the part at the time. I still have worries about the quality of the movie, but if it fails, it certainly shouldn't be due to Cavill, who is a heck of a good young actor.

Not a good choice. The choices for Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern, they all suck. Nobody likes Hensworth he might be o.k. though. Chris Evans was already a superhero, and he provides comedic relief, which sucks, superhero's aren't funny. The green lanern, Ryan Reynolds? Oh and he's Deadpool, great, what's with casting people as two superheros. I know their actors, but it's fake if Flame On from Fantastic Four is now all of a sudden Captain America. Anne Hathaway as the new Catwomen, what's with all of the horrible casting?

Deadpool won't be seen again so Reynolds is okay to play a superhero that might have a franchise like Iron man. And the heroes aren't robots, they can have sense of humours lol Tom Welling didn't want to be a Film Superman b/c it may have ruined the Smallville image of superman, BUT now that Smallville is over I am surprised he didn't throw his hat in the ring. Hathaway as Cat woman.. not sure about that one either. Michelle Pfifier? was the bomb.

Because Tom Welling isn't a good enough actor for one, second he would be too associated with Smallville which is an "elseworlds" superman story at best, so far fetched from the Superman Mythos that serious, lifelong Superman fans like myself can not even stomach it during the last season. Did you see the rediculous Michael Jackon leather jacket he's wearing these days, and you want him to play Superman in a movie????!! C'mon please. Cavill IS Superman, I have been hoping this guy would land the role since 2004. He looks like Superman, has natural blue eyes, square chisled jawline, he has a deep commanding voice and he can act!! He is the best choice since Chris Reeve. I'm glad he didn't get Superman Returns because that movie was an insult to the chraracter. He will be much better used with this creative team behind him of Nolan, Snyder and Goyer. Can not wait!!

There was one about 3 years ago that went nowhere and now another new reboot. There is not an original idea in Hollywood. My prediction is this one will go nowhere either. Why not get a clue and wait another 20 years and then bring it out again. We have another Spiderman coming up when the Toby McQuire one is still fresh in everyones mind. Another person playing the Hulk I mean come on.

John, the studios only have limited rights to the characters. Sony has to crank out another Spider-Man or it can't make one (Marvel gets the rights back). Same with WB and Superman. 2013 is the deadline before the rights revert back to DC to sell to the highest bidder. As always, business will force the studios hand, and likely result in a lack of focus on the final product. However there is hope here. Chris Nolan (of Inception and Batman) is overseeing the new Superman project with Zach Snyder (300 and Watchmen) directing and David Goyer (Batman movies) scripting. This team is much better than the Superman Returns team led by Bryan Singer.
