Sundance: Universal nabs 'WikiLeaks' doc

Universal Pictures has purchased a documentary about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney is set to direct. Gibney is known for getting the subjects of his films to actively participate in the documentaries.

Among Gibney's films are "Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room," the Jack Abramoff documentary "Casino Jack and the United States of Money," and last fall's "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer."

No word yet on whether Assange will cooperate or not. The Australian-born Assange launched the whistle-blower site in 2006, revealing classified government documents and secrets from various anonymous news sources.

Assange was arrested in London last month for an alleged sexual assault in Sweden. He's now out on bail under house arrest in England pending an extradition hearing. Assange maintains the allegations are false and politically motivated.

I seriously doubt many people will even bother watching a film about this guy. He's yesterday's news.

Like this loser doesn't have a big enough ego already. I expect liberal Hollywood will hail this megalomaniac as a hero and savior.

It's so funny to see the same people who scream about Freedom this and Freedom that, go ballistic over an act of Freedom. If you want corruption and lies, shut up complaining all the time. If you want "Free"dom, then accept and receive freedom. I'm so sick of people wanting it both ways.

I agree with The Dude. Assange is nothing more than a coward sticking his nose into places it doesn't belong. I'll be thrilled when he finally has a "tragic" car wreck. Hopefully his cowardly little cronies meet a similar fate.

You're right man. It'd be so much easier if all the death, corruption, greed, and bloodshed exposed by Wikileaks was just left under the rug where we wouldn't have to make choices about it...

Andy R, you're basically the kind of person that enabled the Nazis to gain power.

Well, if there IS going to be a movie made about this, I think Neil Patrick Harris would be the best actor for it. The physical similarity is definitely there.

Assange is just a tool. If you bust Assange he will be replaced by some other tool the next day. What needs to be done is any person who leaked info needs to take a roadtrip with a CIA kill squad.

You sound like a fascist. You would have made a great block leader in 1940's Germany. You could out all of the sympathizers to the SS.

I was wondering what was happening to Assange (along with Joran van der Sloot – news of him is at a deafening silence, too).

When is Assange's hearing? Anybody know?

Wrong! Wikileaks is credit to freedom. We should all cheer Mr Assange.

What a moronic ideal, he is not even an American. We have no freedoms in other countries and it should be visa-versa.

How can any America think that the man walks on water when he has said over and over again that he hates America and want to "bring it down". Do you really think that the US is the only country that has secrets. How come, if he is so into the truth and only the truth, he isn't publishing Australia's secrets.

Alex Gibney does great work but if he is paying Assage for his story you know that the money is going to go to support Wilileaks and thereby foster more harm to this country. Gibney might want to think about that before he writes the check

Wikileaks isn't causing harm, it's the person who leaked the info to wikileaks to begin with.

Wikileaks was instrumental in the overthrow of the tyrannical and oppressive Tunisian government. Anybody supporting freedom and opposed to oppressive totalitarian governments should be supporting Wikileaks.

The only people in this country who would be "harmed" by Wikileaks are those who saw fit to deny the truth from the public. These people don't have the public's best interest in mind. The ones scrambling to shred papers and better conceal their secrets are the ones who must be exposed.
