A week after Kelly Preston and husband John Travolta shared photos of their new addition with the world, Preston is opening up on the more intimate details of baby Benjamin’s arrival.
In her first TV interview since his birth on November 23, Preston told the “Today” show how “wonderful” it is to bring “another child into the world and to look at things through his eyes. He’s so innocent and so sweet.”
The 48-year-old “Casino Jack” star also talked about how the public's support after Benjamin's birth has been healing for the family. Travolta and Preston, who also have a daughter, 10-year-old Ella Bleu, lost their son Jett at the age of 16 in 2009.
“It’s been wonderfully healing,” Preston told “Today.” “It’s been, I think, a really nice gift for a lot of people throughout the world. We’ve gotten the most beautiful letters and the most beautiful notes of happiness. And I think - just sort of a sigh of relief, a bit. And that's been really nice to sort of share that with people."
She and Travolta, 56, had been trying to have another child for years, and the couple considers Benjamin to be their miracle baby. "I didn't [consider the risks]. I just considered that it was difficult," she said. “We tried for quite a few years. Anytime you get pregnant at this age, it is a miracle.”
"Today's" Natalie Morales pointed out that Preston and Travolta, who are Scientologists, had discussed having a silent birth.
“Silent birth is basically just no words, as much as possible. If you need to moan, if you cry out, you know all of that, of course that’s normal,” Preston explained in response to Morales' question of what exactly a "silent birth" means.
“But just bringing them in as peaceful and gentle a way as possible because L. Ron Hubbard found the single source of aberration of psychosomatic illnesses – stress, fears, worry, things like that – have to do with the reactive mind. And in that part of the mind is different words and commands that can come back and affect you later in life.”
Preston also credits the practice for giving her kids such peaceful dispositions.
“I’m blessed…my kids have always been amazing,” she told “Today.” “Very calm, very peaceful, happy…and I absolutely know that it’s very much because of that.”
