'Ghostbusters III' a no-go without Bill Murray

His latest movie may be called "No Strings Attached," but it seems there are quite a few hitches involved in getting director Ivan Reitman's planned "Ghostbusters" sequel off the ground.

"All of the actors but one have read [the script] and loved it," Reitman tells CNN of "Ghostbusters III." "We're waiting for one of them to read it and see where we are.”

The holdout?

“That would be the famous Bill Murray — Mr. Venkman," Reitman says of the quirky karaoke crasher/funnyman, who starred alongside Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis in "Ghostbusters" (1984) and "Ghostbusters II" (1989).

Reitman, 64, adds that he feels the latest installment is better than the previous two movies. "I'm really jazzed about it," he tells CNN.

And if Murray doesn't like it? “We have a very complicated deal," says Reitman. "Let's just put it that way."

I think Ghostbusters needs left alone. All of you commenting are probably under the age of 18 and everything always has to be sparkly and new for you. You don't come back in a whole new decade and make a sequel. It won't be as good. I don't want to see them tracking ghosts on an iPhone. Also, 3-D is so annoying. They need to stop making everything in it, they lose a lot of money since a good percent of people can't see the effects.

I would really love to see a third ghostbusters film with the original four. That being said the story should revolve around the original team but then i read reports that the script would be about introducing a new team. If thats the case then i dont care to see it, i dont care to see a new generation of ghostbusters or the passing of the torch kind of movie where the original ghostbusters make cameos that would be GOD AWFUL. If they do go that route they would just alienate and cheat the fans that are anxious to see another Ghostbusters movie. As old as the actors are i would hope they can make a story that centers the orginal ghostbusters cause even if it was a bad movie i would still enjoy it as long as they didnt do the obvious route of introducing a new team. Murray if you do read this do the movie with this in mind other wise dont! Everybody wants a third Ghostbusters movie but do we really want to see an introduction movie of a new team HELL NO!

Bill Murray you are too old to be acting up like this!! Make a decision, it has been since early 2010 already!!
    Previous Article:
According to gossip columnist Mike Walker (via the Howard Stern show, via Bloody Disgusting), Murray is making a difficult situation even more difficult in regards to GHOSTBUSTERS 3. The man is evidently a real cranky-pants (pardon the foul language); despite the fact that Venkman isn't meant to be a main character (we all know by now that he becomes a ghost), Murray isn't playing nice with others.

Here's the skinny: Dan Aykroyd called 'ol pal and Ghostbusters co-star Bill Murray and snarled 'stop acting like a jerk', " Walker reported. "Murray, despite agreeing to doing the film, has suddenly turned so cranky and mean [that] he refuses to answer phone calls."

Said a source, "Producers gave Bill script approval needed for his cooperation, but that cant even seem to get him on the phone to talk about the script. He's even told 'em that his character needs to be killed off in the opening minutes of the film."

This doesn't help the film any, as Sony and Ivan Reitman are trying to resolve their own conflict. Something tells me we won't be seeing GHOSTBUSTERS 3 move forward anytime soon.

Murray is infamous for his dislike of sequels... and frankly, I hope he kills this one. Must we taint Ghostbusters the way other franchise have already been tainted by series reboots? Does no one remember the failures of Star Wars? Indiana Jones?

What a huge bummer for us Ghostbusters fans. I thought they were already filming. I wonder if the professional rift between Murray and Ramis is still going on. Come on Bill, put your disagreements about Groundhog Day behind you and do this movie for the fans! You are Peter Venkman and Ghostbusters isn't Ghostbusters without you. Odds of Bill actually reading this post is 1 out of a quadrillion, but there's nothing else that could be said on the matter. I think Ramis, Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson (assuming he's part of the cast too), can still make the movie with another actor playing a similar role to Pete Venkman, but it definitely wouldn't be the same and have the same charm.

Bill's got oh so many fans out there that woukd LOVE to see GB III. Those who sufer through tons of Commercials to see BM in Caddy Shack over and over, not to mention GB 1 & 2 would be thrilled to see his talen adorn the silver screen again. A lot of he younger folks have only been exposed to is great comedic talent in Scrooged and Ground Hog Day (aside from his serious acting talent), would get a big charge out of GB III is its anywhere as good as the first two.

The first time I saw BM was on SNL with the late Howard Cosell in the earkly '70's, and have been hooked ever since.

Come On Bill – give us some more of your famous comedic talent – we need it in these tough times!

If the plot was tweaked for a todays audience and the special effects were up to todays standards or beyond i'd watch it .wonder if Rick Moranis will be joining the cast or at least make a small walk- through , His goofball character was funny in the fist two . If Bill won't do it i will likely not watch it . He was the favorite and replacing his char or leaving him out would be horrible options. I don't want to see this movie turn into one of those remake types where you got someone like johny knoxvile ,ben stiler ..ect reinventing the roles.

I'm tired of hte sequel after sequel after sequel mentality in hollywood. They keep recycling the same stuff and same actors in similar roles with similar themes and similar effects and similar BS. Be original guys. I wouldn't mind seeing Bill Murray in something new. Seeing him in Ghostbusters 3 just would make me think about how much he's aged since then.

The old ghostbusters worked because of its unique chemistry. Every movie is unique. I loved dan akroyd the most, even to this day because he really is zany, but what made bill murray's character so interesting was that he was only in it for hte money and not really into the ghost things like the others. Any sequel is just not going to be simlar and will be unable to catch the same flavor. Put a fork in it. Put Bill Murray in a different kind of movie and no one will notice he's aged so much. Honestly.

    Be original.

I grew up with the first 2 GB movies and of course loved them, especially the zany first one. That said, I can't see a GB 3 with the original cast or a GB 3 at all. Those guys are all like 70 and corporatized now whereas when they did the first movie they were young(er), hungry improvisational comedians. GB 3 I think would be rather blah. We had this place where you could see $1 movies back in '84, and God knows how many times we saw "Ghostbusters". Hopefully Bill Murray is thinking this through...and realizing that sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone.

But, if it must be made, it must be seen, and I'm sure we can find a cache of cheap beer, Dutch Masters cigars, and a beat up Ford LTD to see it in. :-)

I thought the first was a classic and the second was pretty craptastic, so I don't know what to say about a third. Considering the trajectory of Bill Murray's career, they came up with a script for the third about 18 years too late. He's moved on to more serious (even when still comedic) roles.

Well, it says he hasn't read it yet, or is the last to read it, it doesn't say he's holding out, or refusing. C'mon people, read the article properly!!

That being said, i really hope he does this movie because the first two are classics! GB the game was fantastic throwback to the original two movies, and thanksully they used the actual actors voices. New ghosts, new special effects, and if the story is written properly, it won't feel like old guys running in jump suits with large proton packs flashing on their backs... it has the potential to be something unique and well done if written properly.

Perhaps he can read it and suggest some changes to make it better if he doesnt like it.

As much as I would LOVE to see GB3, I am sad that it has taken this long to make, if they can even make it. It will NOT work without Dr. Venkman. If Murray won't do it, it shouldn't be done. Of course, it probably shouldn't be done anyway. I am a huge fan of both the movies and would probably pay the money to go see this at the theatre, even if it "bombs". But realistically it would have to be one PERFECT movie to live up to the first two. I'm sure they are not as good as I remember them, but they were created in a magical time in my life. In my mind there is nothing better than GB/GBII.

The problem with GB2 is that like too many sequals it had too many elements put in because they were in the first movie...hey guys this time instead of having something huge try to get the GB's lets have the GB's have something huge on their side....boring. Do a GB3 if you must but it doesn't have to be a replay of the first two. Show some imagination, trust that your audience is not a mass of drooling idiots and doesn't need it to be jsut like the other 2.

Come up with a new storyline, think outside the box, it just might end up being worth seeing unlike GB2.

Yes, the new game IS GB3. It follows the events of 2 and very artistically links all the events of the game and both movies together. Weaver declined the role. They had to invent a new female counter for Venkman. Weaver wanted in at the last second but a new actress was already cast. Stupid move on her part.

bill murray hasn't read a script yet, and there are people on here calling him names and saying that he is responsible for this film not being made. this blog post doesn't say anything that should not have been obvious to anyone with a functioning brain cell.

Ehh, I don't know about Ghost Busters 3 anymore.. I played the Ghost Busters videogame on Xbox awhile back and thought it was great, but the ending really didn't give me the closure to Ghost Busters that I was seeking. I think Ghost Busters 3 will be released, but it will be garbage. Bill is going to agree to it, but only because of the money that's going to be involved. If you were in his shoes it would make more sense to just cash in on it while you can because he's getting old and the oppertunity won't come around again. He knows this. Watch, he's going to hold out for as much money as he can, do the movie with minimal screen-time and after he's paid and the movie bombs he's going to act like GB3 never happened. Either that or he's going to say how he knew along that GB3 was bad idea and should not have been made.

Loved the GB1. GB2 was just something to pass the time. GB3 would suck major ass. The only way they could make it "work" would be such an extensive revamping and modernization of the whole damn thing that ya really wouldn't recognize any of it anymore. And you're not gonna find any "kid" actor out there that has the same kinda lounge-singer swagger that (Dr!) Venkman's character had. And the reason we appreciated this attribute of him was because the other "Busters" were all very poler opposite in their demeanor. And after reading these comments... if they are stupid enough to make any kinda reference to 9/11 souls... (just stops, hangs his head down and slowly shakes it side-to-side in a quiet "No-No-No" fashion.) And that's another thing... W-T-F ever happened to original movie ideas? I keep seeing a bunch of dredged-up re-engineering of old TV shows or movies from the 60's, 70's and 80's hastily done for no other reason than to make a quick buck. Don't be a Byter... ya gotsta Show-and-Prove with your own Stilo!

What's with all the hatred for Zombieland? His cameo in that film was hilarious. However, that being said, I have to agree with Tim about Murray being a pompous ass. If one can find it, check out his guest appearance on American Chopper when they made the Caddyshack tribute bike. Throughout the episode he was sarcastic and not the funny sarcastic either. He seemed like he didn't want anything to with the Teutuls and came across as a complete jerk. The only time he seemed anywhere near friendly was at the end when they unveiled the bike in front of an audience.

The interesting thing here, regarding the actors age, is look at Tron Legacy. Same issue. So are we going to see CGI gb's running around? I hope not. Then again, it might be the gb's tracking down all the early bird specials.

The first movie is my favorite. I remember how creepy it was in the beginning of the movie, the unknown librarian ghost, the music...but the great "3" stooges kept it lite and that is what made it such a great film.

The second film was ok. But the first is the best. If they can recapture the spirit of the first film coupled with a great story line, itll
rock. Or, it'll be Matrix 3.....

I think, forgive my assumption, if you pay $7, or $9 or even $12 for a single 3D movie.....the thought is perhaps you are not going alone and that would double or triple, say if you have a few people (students or kids) with you, even an 'economy hour' show, with whatever snacks you may elect to purchase, put the movie experience, in the theater, hick town, small town or big ol city, at $25+ for you and the members of the group accompanying you. Such passionate responses, could that be directed in a positive way????

Trust me I understand, when my wife and I go it is like $30.00 to go to the movies, but I have to say that if it is the wright movie I will pay to see it in 3D and in IMAX 3D. I went to see Avatar in IMAX 3D and it was no cheap, but I would never see it any other way. Now I am not a dummy by any means, but it was worth the price. I would not go see every movie in 3D, just ones that you know would be better in 3D.

      January 12, 2011 at 12:54 pm | Report abuse |
  118. lancon454

Okay here we go with the price thing. I live on the east coast and things are a little higher only because the pay is a little higher than the reset of the US other than California. We are not all d-bags and you may pay less because you live in another part of the US. This does not mean that you are a hick or less then us on the East Coast, you just pay less than we do that is all.

    3D movie Adult = $14.50 3D IMAX Adult = $16.50
    Senior = $13.50 Senior = $15.50
    Child = $11.50 Child = 13.50

Now if you do not know what IMAX is, it is the screen that ist 72 X 52.8 Feet, this is why it is higher in prince and also it is in 3D. you can also go to IMAX 2D movies that are a little less.

I hope its not in 3D. Ill be glad when that fad is over. I cant stand the 3D stuff. They tried it in the 60's and it didnt work then either. 3D TV sales were way lower than they thought, and some poll I seen was something like 81% of the people polled said they wouldnt buy one.

  167. The real scoop

I think the Murray knows he is a different kind of actor now. His humor doesn't translate to a modern audience as well. And perhaps, he isn't as funny as he used to be. So to do this movie, would mess with his image, cause he knows he can't live up to expectation. And instead of people remembering how funny he was, they'll say, man – he shouldn't have done that. I Absolutely love Harrison Ford – but man – I'm not sure about another Indy movie. You can't improve on perfection. You can only muck it up. All that said, I'd pay double to see this flick and in the end, that's all anyone in Tinsel town cares about. :)

Bill Murray can pick and choose his movie roles now, or never star in them again, if he so chooses. It's never a good idea (to me, anyway) to resurrect a sequel 25 years later...the movie-going bunch nowadays don't really care and it's not worth it to make a movie that goes straight-to-video. The people I talked to about this would rather wait for the video anymore, so I think it wouldn't be worth the expense of making GB3. And it will be expensive; imagine the FX costs 25 years later!

    But it would be cool!!!

Bill Murray will not do this movie, ever. He has said time and time again in various interviews that he felt the first two should be left in the past. He is afraid GB3 will be bad and put a bad light on the first two. For him it's not worse the risk of shining a bad light on something that is looked at as very good meaning the first two movies. This will not happen, ever. He will stick to his guns and he is fine with not doing this movie. He knows it will be bad.

The reason he won't do it is because he has become too big. He's too big a name for GB3 now. Never mind that he's still the same un-talented hack he was his entre career. Anyone who knows comedy knows that the driving talent on SNL and in the first 2 GB's was Dan Aykroyd. Murray is a hack.

      January 12, 2011 at 1:35 pm | Report abuse |
    • Hunter

@Jim-Okay, whether you perfer Aykroyd over Murray, that's just opinion. But to call Murray a hack? That's like saying Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters 1+2, Meatballs, Tootsie, Scooged, What about Bob?, Little Shop of Horrors, Kingpin, Life Aquatic, Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Ed Wood were just happenstance. Face it, the guy has earned out respect over the years time and time again. He is lightning in a bottle even in smaller roles such as Zombieland and Get Smart. Great in kids stuff too i.e. Space Jam, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Osmosis Jones. It's no coincedence that he is still one of the most respected comedic actors after all these years.
Aykroyd on the other hand, has given us gems such as The Great Outdoors, Spies Like Us, Trading Places and Blues Brothers, but other than that has been hit or miss over the years. Unless you count Coneheads, Dragnet, and Blues Brothers 2000 as "successes". Oh, he was pretty good as Mack Sennett in Chaplin and as Grocer in Grosse Pointe Blank.

And that is why so many sequals are so thoroughly horrible.....people go see them even if they are bad just because they are a sequal to something they liked. How about this, instead of encouraging them to not even worry about having to try and make a good movie, we instead say "I will go see GB3, if it looks like they put in an effort and at least make it look like it might be good." I mean we can't say we will only see it if it is good, because we don't know until we see it, but if it looks like it will be horrible, then I am not wasting my time or money.

My dad's the same way, and while my mother can see the 3-D effects, she's never terribly impressed with them. When they come out with a movie we want to see that's in 3-D, we either wait for the movie to come out on DVD or see it in a theater that doesn't have 3-D... Everyone responding to Cheefsfury...you are in the company of royalty!!
Ok, perhaps not, but seriously, this guy is on here every day...TYPING IN CAPS ALL THE TIME...unable to spell, use correct grammar, etc. It's becoming tiresome watching the same old routine from him, and could be a bit entertaining except that he always loses it and insults everyone who dares to point one of those issues to him. He cannot respond back any other way.

Since he is someone who can only communicate thru these types of events, then hopefully he understands that we all wish he'd d.i.a.f.

Going back to home school??? Time to hit the books??? I would say that you need to lose the internet and hit the English books harder. Your spelling and grammar are horrible.
