If you think your co-workers are a handful, take a good look at the characters on your favorite shows. A recent study conducted by Global Compliance found that most people on TV are hardly politically correct, constantly violating ethics in the workplace.
The biggest offender? "30 Rock," which averages 11 violations per episode. On one show, Jack (Alec Baldwin) comments that a "chick lawyer" who handles sexual harassment presentations is "asking for it." According to Global Compliance, which is devoted to helping organizations achieve the highest degree of ethical behavior, Jack's remark violates Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace.
"Grey's Anatomy" placed second, with 7 violations per episode, including an incident in which Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) shares patient info with someone not authorized to receive it. Her crime: Policy and Process Integrity, a HIPAA violation.
Diversity and Equal Opportunity and Respect in the Workplace were issues for "CSI" and "House," which both had 6 violations per show.
On "CSI," Gilbert Gottfried tells the chief he needs foreplay before doing a task and she tells him she'll give him a rectal exam. "House" featured a similar scenario, with Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) objecting to a colonoscopy by asking House (Hugh Laurie), "How would you like to have a 6-foot hose shoved into your small intestine?" He then makes a quip about the basketball players she dated in college.
Both "The Office" and "NCIS" racked up 5 violations each. On "The Office," Packer (David Koechner) calls Michael (Steve Carell) a "queen" while others are in the room (Diversity, Equal Opportunity and Respect in the Workplace), while "NCIS" features Ducky (David McCallum) and Gibbs (Mark Harmon) sharing a drink in the morgue and commenting that women aren't equal to men (Environmental, Health and Safety; Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace).
"White Collar" had 4 violations per episode, including an FBI stakeout in which the surveillance video focuses in on a woman and a character makes a comment about her as the criminal gets away (Environmental, Health, and Safety; Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace).
"Ugly Betty" and "Glee" each had 2 violations per episode. On "Betty," Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams) forces a receptionist to reveal personal info about Claire Meade (Judith Light), then uses it to influence business decisions (Misuse or Misappropriation of Information or Assets).
And on "Glee," a principal violates Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace by referring to wheelchair-bound Artie as a "cripple" in front of the glee club teacher.
Thanks for your great information, the contents are quiet interesting.I will be waiting for your next post.

Woah this blog is wonderful i love reading your posts. Stay up the good paintings! You understand, many people are searching round for this info, you can help them greatly.
I have been browsing online more than 3 hours as of late, but I by no means found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It's pretty value enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet shall be much more useful than ever before.
Thanks for every other wonderful article. The place else could anyone get that type of information in such an ideal means of writing? I've a presentation subsequent week, and I am at the search for such information.
Wow, superb weblog format! How lengthy have you ever been blogging for? you made blogging glance easy. The full glance of your website is magnificent, as neatly as the content!

I just added this web site to my top picks. I really enjoy reading you. Thanks!
HOLY CRAP YOU GUYS STILL WATCH TV?
I'm watching a video about cats and their interactions with human beings and taking to a person in Italy about the weather.
Best thing is, the internet has no commercials if you configure it properly. Plus its cheaper than cable.
This article throws out a lot of facts without any direction. Were you pointing out what makes these shows funny? You should make this a numbered list. The more "violations," the funnier the show. 30 Rock #1.
Instead we should violate a real Civil Liberty like free speech.
Political correctness up, dumb television shows down!
The author needs a reality check. Political correctness must die! Good God we hate politics in this country. Why would anyone want to be "politically" correct? If people like Mark Marino had their way, there would be nothing funny on television.
30 Rock's only crime is that Tina Fey steals jokes from such greats as Newsradio. In one instance she bites an entire episode. It is not all that creative but entertaining. Who gives an F if it is politically correct? Political Correctness is contrary to human instinct and humor. Dumb article, waste of space.
Every single episode of Archer is 22 minutes of ethics violations. and it is HILARIOUS. Sorry, but you americans are just looking for any and every excuse to get your little feelings hurt, stir pointless debates, just to seem interesting and special. Shut your pie holes already.
does anyone believe that in a world of human beings this isn't going on at least in small pockets....perhaps these shows rather than being ethics violaors put this out there to sensitize people about how ridiculous and inappropriate the comments and actions are.....or perhaps I am just Pollyanna....
A question: If, as almost everyone here states, "Who cares?", why all the replies?
It's the "ethical lapses' that make 30Rock so funny...
obviously 30 rock is meant for laughs, not to be real!!!
people know that alec baldwins character is not meant to be a role model or anything!!!
your ruining the fun for the rest of us
I've been reading a lot of the comment's; gotta love you guys for saying it straight!! I wish my country could grow a pair of balls itself and stand up for what is simply just good fun.
Global Compliance misses the point of 30 Rock.
Also, Global Compliance is a stupid name.
This is going a little too far! But then... how about the IRS Code... the NCAA rules...the 'lack of rights of the victims VS. the rights of the accused...the ACLU position on almost everything...Government spending (they can only spend what they take way from others)...
We have a long way to go America to regain our freedoms
Wait... we're not allowed to say "cripple" now? When did that one go out the window. Cripple is a factual and honest descriptor for someone with a non-working limb. That limb is crippled, and thus the person is crippled.
What's next, "Black" or "white" being labeled as offensive? No wait, probably just "black"
I actually think this is a funny story about the violations, it's just something we never noticed until it's pointed out to us :D
What a non-news story. These people, seemingly with a sense of humor about the whole thing, use fictional characters on television shows as examples of what not to do in a REAL LIFE workplace.
CNN and the blogosphere present it as "Global Compliance says 30 Rock is immoral".
Well, you stole my site hit. I hope you're happy.
I hope everyone commenting actually goes and reads the Global Compliance article before jumping to the conclusions this misleading headline implies.
It's called ironic humor.
God you people are idiots. No one is trying to "censor" tv. Stop watching FOX News. I swear those viewers get off on conspiracy theories and delusions that everyone is trying to impinge on their freedoms.
Censorship is defined as an activity by the government, by the way.
The group is simply pointing out ethical and/or legal violations in the workplace shown on tv. You should take note, by the way. Your inability to recognize these things puts your own job in jeopardy, and might just land you in jail. Personally, I think it's scarier all the dramas represented, since people are more likely to see those as real life than comedies. No one takes anything which happens on 30 Rock seriously (which is why it's so funny) it's so over the top.
hey you, get that stick out of your butt
Now we know what all the 2012 end-of-the-world-predictions were about. The end of humor, the end of free speech (even if it is offensive), the end of individuality, the end of common sense.... Between this and "we're re-writing Huck Finn to remove offensive racial slurs," I'm sick of political correctness.
Such an extreme sense of propriety is no doubt what landed Capt Honors in his current predicament. I'm sure he was trying to teach some valuable lessons (that are otherwise mind numbingly dull) with a little bit of sitcom humor, but an extremely conservative minority had their feelings hurt. I bet 99% of his crew loved those videos.
Soon the Obama left will assign a block captain on your street to take notes like this on "violations" in your neighborhood. This is all very disturbing.
Who would expect television script writers to know anything about genuine corporate culture? Or to write anything remotely realistic?
"Global Compliance" ???? I'm looking around fr Alan Funt, this has to be some sort of Candid Camera stunt.
thats the dumpest think i`ve ever read......
ps: get a life
Do the people running this study understand that the one of the points of the show is to poke fun at the television industry? That among it's shortcomings is its lack of ethics. The Producers' reaction to this study? All right! We did it! Job well done!
And it's funny.
I don't get the impression anyone is actually trying to censor this behavior, so much as present the findings of a somewhat whimsical study. Global Compliance is a firm which assists businesses in improving workplace ethics, they aren't the FCC or anything like that. They just, it seems, conducted a study in the interest of demonstrating their process. Where does it say they're trying to change anything?
You commenters are seriously retarded. Its a joke, idiots.
Wow. The thought police are really trying to make a name for themselves with this one.
What about Mad Men? I love watching those vintage style violations! ; )
I Think the group has good intentions, But it's totally over-reacting. The reason why people do those things on TV is to show their beliefs, creeds, or personality. Most people would never call a wheelchair-bound person a cripple. We've evolved far beyond that in this century. What's next, Not showing Neo-Nazis saying "Heil hitler!" because it's offensive?, Same thing for "Pro-Life" protesters screaming at doctors "Baby-Killers!"? And that's what comedy thrives on: People's guillibility, stupidity, greed, or dumbness.
My favorite example of 30 Rock's envelope-pushing hilarity is Tracy Morgan yelling out "Ladies of the battered women's shelter, please be quiet, a man is talking!"
The best part about that is the fact that Tina Fey wrote that bit.
So Global Compliance got themselves a little free publicity for their worthless service with what's essentially a dumb publicity stunt. I'm not sure who I'm more mad at – CNN for running it or myself for reading it.
Hey, it's comedy! It's supposed to be funny. No one is saying that this is how to conduct yourself in real-life.
Sit back, relax, have a laugh. This is probably the best sitcom on TV.
Obviously FX's Archer wasn't covered in the research.
This is the sort of article I would expect to see on April Fool's Day. The author is clueless and can't distinguish fiction from reality.
I am quite sure that these chicks at global compliance only have their panties in an uproar because they are obviously tired of being on the receiving end of some of this rear-end grabbing joshing. I'm sure those mammograms they get are for pleasure beyond what they get from sitting on the washing machine during the rinse cycle. Maybe they can role out a wheel-chair and spend their time racing a cripple to some rehab where they can try and influence Hakim to remove those panties from deep within the reach of those colonoscopys.
How many violations was that !! :)
Politcal correctness gone crazy,
Very few people ever take offence at any of these things, and its getting to the stage where breathing air will become unacceptable, due to the fact somebody who has breathing difficulties could feel that person is not providing equality
Oh good grief! It's fricking entertainment! If you don't like it or are offended – don't watch! But I'm tired of "groups" trying to sanitize everything. Funny that the shows noted are also some of the most popular on TV. *sigh* Get a clue here "Global Compliance".
to those of you naming other shows - this is about Workplace compliance so it is focusing on workplace shows. Nowhere in the article does it state that the shows should change. To those of you that don't like these shows – don't watch them. To those of you that DO watch these shows – continue.
Most people watch tv to ESCAPE from the everyday .......................
No one wants to watch everyday people doing everyday things. (not reality tv – those are screened people to provide a specific element to the show, in very differnt situations from the everyday.
Take this 'article' for what it is, soemthing written for coroparate America to include in the monthly compliance newsletter.
The shows mentioned here all have pretty high ratings. That tells me that not a lot of people are really offended by the remarks made on the shows. So....who is REALLY offended? What is the purpose of Global Compliance? In private, most people I know are not politically correct. They laugh at PC-ness. I believe most people do.
The biggest ethics violator of TV is FOX News, period!
it is called creative writing! maybe freedom of speech? what a wasted effort "global compliance" they can probably get jobs in Russia NK, China or maybe Iran I can't believe that any reasonable thinking adult would take anything that came from the Office of Global Compliance seriously.....................
Well, this certainly defines our culture – 99% of the commenters about this story trashed it. Not one reader stopped to consider the message this gives to our children who watch Dad watching The Simpsons (or any of the other trashy things on TV) and he's laughing uproariously at their ugly, rude, disrespectul, behavior and must think: well, then, I guess it's okay to be nasty. Kids don't analyze the place of "satire" in culture. They just follow the lead of their parents. Consider the source the next time a teenager next to you acts like the world owes them a living and that's it's perfectly acceptably to be rude and self-centered. No reason to censor, but a good reason to say "shame on you."
Ah yes, the children. The usual argument.
Here's the deal. We don't need the censorship, nor do we even need the FCC. All we need is parents like mine with at least a half a brain between the two of them, who did not allow us to watch shows like the Simpsons, South Park, or anything even remotely inappropriate.
There's a secret to this whole thing. You don't like it? TURN IT OFF, MORON. 30 Rock is hilarious, but NBC is not forcing you to watch it. Just like your credit card issuer did not force people who make 25k a year to charge up 10 grand for their over-extended Christmas this year.
Wouldn't it be nice to live in a society where people understand that some things are just jokes and quips and not get offended on behalf of themselves or other people? Tired of all this ultra-sensitivity. And hypocrisy. "I'm ok, you're ok...just as long as you don't say anything that someone might get offended or get their feelings hurt over."
PC must die or free speech will.
who the hell cares????????????
So...the list is compiled fore the sole purpose of acknowledging that fictional characters in fictional situations are behaving differently than one would be expected to in reality? I honestly don't get the point of performing such a study, let alone CNN writing a report on it.
If they think they're pointing out some flaw in society wherein viewers somehow agree with the things that are being said, they're wrong. In a lot of these cases, the action elicits a negative response from other characters or the action is used as evidence to deepen the understanding of the character's fundamental flaws.
And beside all that, it's comedy. We're laughing at these characters because they are saying or doing things we know they shouldn't; their unreal behavior allows us to distance ourselves from the scenario and thereby be a casual, entertained observer.
Why not also audit world events when they, too, are not politically correct?
Tell me that someone is actually payed to monitor this politically correct drivel? I mean if we all got paid for such B.S. then America would never have gone into a recession
And that is why 30 Rock is the best show on TV.
I think the biggest thing we need to take away from this article is that "The Office" and apparently "Family Guy" need to step things up a little bit. They should be going for 15+ range! I mean seriously...only 5 violations (and i use that term loosely) per episode? Michael and Dwight are so much better than that
And yes...That's what she said.
OMG have you ever heard of SARCASM? That's all 30 Rock is!
WHO GIVES A DAMM WHAT THESE IDIOTS THINK. THAT IS WHAT MAKES THE SHOWS FUNNY. IF YOU CAN'T TAKE A JOKE.... WELL YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO.
But women are weak. Blacks are lazy. Mexicans are hard working Catholics. White men are chauvinistic. Followers of Islam are potentially dangerous. Chinese are over-worked. Black people are more talented athletically than anyone else. To paraphrase Up in the Air: "...that's racist. No, I'm like my mother. I stereotype, it's much quicker." Hahahahahaahahahahahahahahaha.
I fückin love Global Compliance! Those guys are a fückin riot! Fück.
30 Rock is typically very funny – because of this kind of humor. It's amusing though that the ultra liberal Tine Fey's show get the worst marks. Had it been the work of a conservatiive I'm pretty sure the reactions here would have been entirely different and the humor would be described as mean and insensitive.
*WHOOSH* That's the sound of comedy flying over your head.
I bet some chick wrote this article.
Haha. Or some Jewish man from New Jersey who is a vegan and weighs 105 lbs. and talks with a high nasally voice. Hahaha.
You can expect this trend to increase. As people feel more social pressure to be politically correct, the networks will continue to tap into viewer's resentment for political correctness, writing in more such "violations." The vicarious thrill of watching a character acting unethically can be as cathartic as performing the act one's self without suffering negative consequences.
Very good insight.
As Dennis Miller once said, "There's the real world, and the joke world. The joke world is rough. Wear a cup." As our education level has dropped, Americans have lost our sense of humor.
For shows like 30 Rock and The Office, isn't the absurdity of some of these 'ethics' violations part of the joke/satire? I'm pretty sure the idea behind House and Hugh Laurie's character is that he doesn't care about the rules if he thinks it will get results.
1) Please tell me no one got PAID to compile this steaming pile of drivel.
2) It is precisely BECAUSE there are agencies like "Global Compliance" that people tune into shows like this so that they can live vicariously through these "offensive" characters – the way they DREAM about conducting themselves in real life. Ergo, if there were no agencies like "Global Compliance" et al, people would be more free to live REAL fullfilling lives and they wouldn't need to watch so much TV. Heck, maybe we'd all even lose some weight.
3) I hate, hate, hate you Political Correctness.
30 Rock is so awesome.
Nothing reported in this story discusses whether, in each of the individual "violations", the behavior was depicted in a positive or negative way. Also, I see nothing in this story about how Global Compliance interprets the study data, or what they intend to do about it, other than counsel their clients that what is seen on TV is not a good model from which employees can learn "compliant" behavior. I presume this story simply isn't about those things. It's about a study having been done, and some raw data having been collected. Not quite as controversial as it is being made to sound. Be sure to wake me when Global Compliance starts slamming the shows with lots of violations, or lobbying against them in Congress.
I wonder if the study data included the positive or negative depiction of the violations.
I thought House - one of my favorite shows - would have had more violations.
This article is gay ;-)
TV shows are for entertainment only. Most times they poke fun at real life situations. If an employee did these things in real life, they would get fired in 30 seconds. If a senior level person did those things, they would invite a very expensive lawsuit.
This is what the lawyers and their "sue anybody for any reason at no cost to you" contingency lawsuits have done to our society. We have to live like robots in the workplace, where the slightest statement can be misinterpreted as an insult. Then you get BS lawsuits or settlements. People have to go to to "sensitivity training", "anger management", or some other PC nonsense. All because we live in a sue-happy society.
Is Global Compliance the stupidest bunch of losers ever or what!!?
has the whole nation gone soft? this article is ludicrous.
It is called a sitcom for a reason. If you are watching 30 Rock for a lesson on morals or equality, you are an idiot.
This article is stupid. I award you zero points and may god have mercy on your soul.
This was a waste of an article....this is television, not real life!
Um, I think we're missing something here. 30 Rock is satirizing the behavior, whereas the numbskulls who write Grey's and the other pap on this list are too lazy or too stupid to know better. They leave this crap in because they think it makes it "interesting," but it really just makes smart people turn it off.
30 Rock violates ethical standards ironically. The audience knows the behavior is totally unacceptable and laughs at the characters being exactly wrong. By not noticing the irony, these people actually become part of the joke.
don't we have enough entertainment cops out there? I think whoever wrote this took the bait of the show writers...fools. did you want to march to Washington, DC & protest satire on primetime tv?
"30 Rock" is satire. I'm trying to figure out if perhaps this article is also intended as satire? Unfortunately, I don't think so. How sad.
11 violations in 22 minutes is disappointing, we will try harder. Perhaps Mark Marino "Special to CNN" wants everyone to watch Tele-tubbies on their mini-van tv screens while enroute to a good ole Puritan witch burning. Most of us would probably have our panties in a bunch if we worked for CNN and then had to come home to watch Glee for "research" on an upcoming article.
I enjoyed this tongue-in-cheek article. That's why we watch TV, because our real workplace is boring and we need some subversive humor before turning in at night (to get 6 hours sleep and do it all again the next day),
I was trying to read it as tongue-in-cheek but then I went to the Global Compliance website. Sadly, I think this is not intended to make us laugh.
Now this shows you just how screwed up everything is.
Thank God they didn't analyze All in the Family or South Park... :-)
The people over at Global Compliance realize that these characters and workplaces aren't real, right?
It's Television people!!.....I have to live in the real world on a daily basis. If I put the TV on, I want something different than what I live in each day. Lighten up people. It's just the boob tube.
30 Rock? Try an old show like Sanford and Son. There was nothing PC about that show. These a55hats are looking to create a society similar to the movie 'demolition man'.
Good point...TV is so watered down today. How about All in the Family?
Gotta agree with the sentiments of most of these replies. We all know satire and the politically uncorrect "mistakes" these characters make. If we all can't laugh at ourselves for our humanness, what's left? We don't need a global watchdog to point them out.
These are tv shows..they are not real...lets complain about the homeless on the streets or something.. not ethics violations..come on
Ethics differentiates facts from fiction. Observational humor is based on the illusion of facts enhanced by absurdity. Politics, theater, and art are also illusions of facts. In every instance, the illusion of facts has been used to entertain and engage us for eons. When reality transcends illusion, ethics becomes a meaningful consideration. It's the object of the illusion that is often misinterpreted and consequently becomes tort actionable. In my opinion, Tina Fay is pure genius and someone who greatly enriches my life. Her intent is to show the absurdity of the characters she has developed and I get it. Her work is profoundly funny.
You guys are all tools this article isn't serious, it's in the Marquee section, it's filler to be read when you are bored.
Come on! I think many people are completely missing the point. Global Compliance is not suggesting that these shows become more politically correct, it is just pointing out some real world violations that are depicted in TV shows. I would hope that we all understand that TV shows are not real life (even those billed as reality shows). On these shows they get away will all sorts of over the top/unrealistic behavior. Global Compliance is just pointing out some of those behaviors.
You can't have ethics without morals and where are morals taught today.
Dude, morals have ALWAYS been taught by the family unit. Those who have strong families have strong morals and ethics, and vice versa. Society sets the standards but the teachers have the responsibility of interpreting and enforcing them.
How can I get a Job at this "Global Compliance"? Talk about Your Money for Nothing.
So...now we're supposed to be THIS touchy-feely in our society? It's gone so far that someone's actually suggesting that tv shows (which are interesting b/c they're NOT real life) must comply with ethics and political correctness? Please. The author lives in their own dream world where we all hold hands and sing non-offensive, gender-neutral peace songs (unless that would offend another nation, that is...at which point we would all sign an apology).
This is the most moronic blog post I have ever read. The author must be plugging a buddies site or something. Who cares.. its TV
I cannot believe I wasted two minutes reading this article. I thinik they used the good rep of 30 Rock as a teaser for a pathetic attempt at moralizing....to quote Louis CK "you non-contributing zero"
Move to North Korea...leave us Americans alone
This is what you get when you vote in Progressives. Nannystateism run wild.
a) This is NOT a government organization. They would exist regardless administration.
b) The show is produced by...and starring...(now listen) LEADING SHOW BIZ 'PROGRESSIVES"!
See, not so easy to pigeon hole people, eh?
The pussification of America is almost complete...oops I just offended all cats
What in the world are we wasting our time on this topic for. It's TV; satire; perfect examples of how such behavior is wrong but also what makes it so funny. Alec Baldwin's comment about "chick lawyers" was funny in the context of the show but most people would be offended or uncomfortable if someone said that around them in real life. I think most people know the difference.
This one of the dumbest and most useless articles I've read.
Wow. Normally I don't have a problem with some of these fluff pieces, but clearly, no one has anything better to do than to sit around and determine whether fictional TV characters comply with ethics or not?
It's TV, get over it. BTW, they say what most people think and want to say, but can't. Our country is walking on eggshells and has nothing to do with respect (people are just scared to get sues or fired now for BS reasons).
What a bunch of crap. This is not a comedic, intelligent, or male dominated group.....huh?
That's Entertainment ! Not the show, the list of complainers !
"Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Respect in the Workplace"- Is that a law or something?
Are you freaking KIDDING me? We watch these shows to escape the insane PC that is forced upon us in our own workplaces. How many "violations" in YOUR workplace, Mark? Get a real job.
OMG reality hits the scripts! Of course none of which is PC is funny. Why would anyone want to watch a show with the most boring and no life people looking over your shoulder at your scripts? FUNNY is the name of the game and off color is what makes shows stay on the air with ratings. Does anyone remember a TV station attempt to only broadcast
positive news? I think it was TBS ages ago who tried it and it failed big time. People want to see flaws in the world because they are real and teaches people how to identify and deal with those situations. PC is soooooo phoney its sickning. What people say and what people are really thinking have nothing in common so if you can't take reality in your TV scripts you need to put on a helmet and body armor and see what the real world is saying and doing.......
we've become the United States of the Offended. a TV has both a channel selector and an off button, don't like a show or its message, change channels or shut it off – same with radio. time for people to understand they are responsible for what they watch/listen to, not the other way around.
I just farted on this article. Is that an ethics violation?
That just made me spit my coffee all over the moniter, thanks for the laugh
how would you like " to do" what these knuckleheads "do for a living". Ethics in TV. 30 Rock. Don't they watch "Faux News"? (lmao)
Global compliance can kiss my politically and unethical @ss.... have they ever heard of humor?
I like how the evil list of horrible mind-rotting shows is practically a top 10 list of best shows on TV. Sorry, the last thing I care about or want in my television shows is ethics.
Really? And here I was thinking that stuff on TV was entertainment and fictional for the most part. I can't believe these shows don't properly follow HIPPA procedures....shame on Grey's anatomy. These GC folks have too much time on their hands and brains are turning into mush from watching so much TV.
I agree with everyone on it's just a TV show, but out of all those people how many, not intentionally, let their kids watch those shows. Doesn't seem too bad until the kid starts to think its okay to talk that way. Hey they saw mom and dad laugh at it, must be okay then right. I think thats what the problem is, its those people that can't seperate the shows as entertainment compared to how to act in real life. So maybe if people were more mindful of what their kids are learning then maybe as they go older they would be able to seperate fantasy from reality. Although then you have all those fat ass nerds who can't get laid that just sit around and play World of Warcraft all day or something like that. F ing losers.
this is kind of cool ... Tina Fey practically exploding when told to tone down the un-ethical humor: http://littledebbieoatmealcookie.wordpress.com/explosion/
Man, these GC people have way, way too much time on their hands...
Hey Global Compliance, $u(K my di(K.
The name of the organization (Global Compliance) is a dead give away, and more disturbing than the (human) behavior that they are hand-wringing about.
You don't comply with ethics. You have ethics. They are your own, and you know when and if you have fallen short of them. These folks have ethics confused with laws and regulations. By capitalizing their codes, i.e. Respect in the Workplace, they are trying to take the place of religion. Basically, they are defining sins.
If you find these shows funny, it just goes to show that you have not started worshiping the Gods of Commerce just yet. You don't need to consume as much as you think you do. Getting "ahead" may not be where you want to go at all. The cost just might be more than you are willing to pay.
"Censorship is unamerican" – Rock the Vota, 1989
My how the times have changed...Don't like what you see? Change the fricken channel...that's what the libs told the Moral Majority, right?
It's amazing how we take freedom of speech so serious as to allow people to say hateful things but...hey be careful what you say, you might offend someone....
Isn't that what satire is about? 30 Rock cannot be the most questionable if they are making fun of being questionable?!?!
@Ciscoheat no it's not , and yes you will
arguments $ 2.00 each
Really? I'm so glad this is making your headlines CNN but it took you months to follow up to the 9/11 health care bill. This is total garbage...its not even entertaining. Its useless...and I'll never get back the 2 minutes I took out to read this article and write this message!
How many CNN Entertainment reporters does it take to write a story about a politically incorrect television comedy series? One. And that's not funny.
AMP, the fact there is an advertisement on CNN for a group raising awareness for political correctness is the problem. You know what kind of people make a living off preaching political correctness? White, privilieged adults who need something to complain about to fulfill their lives because they still are bitter about their parents raising them with discipline and rules. Anybody who has experience a real life with real experiences with real tolerance realizes raising awareness for "political correctness" is absurd and comical. Those kinds of people need to live life, not dwell on things to find wrong about it.
Nature punishes them. They almost all die alone and childless.
This entire study was performed as a advertisement for Global Compliance. If you actually click the link and go to their website they provide ethics and compliance consultation to major companies. They article was meant to be entertaining, not ensue that there was to be some censorship on the shows. You complain that PC people are too sensitive, try reading all the information before you go on a tangent.
i swear, you can be accused of anything these days, thanks to all his politically correct bs going on >.>
Okay, some shows I understand but violating ethics is the POINT of 30 Rock. It's funny. That's what the show DOES. It's like calling out a romcom for being lame and cheesy.
This article is such a waste of time. Want to know why people watch TV? To get away from the politcally correct nonsense society their real life is in!
Maybe we should start "Global Non-Compliance". A totally non-politically correct organization devoted to real life, lived by real people in the real world. Someone needs to tell these sensitivity nuts how full of it they are.
Lol how gay...
I thought this article was funny as heck.
Finally, someone who gets it! Jebus, people. Calm down. This article was satire. I think it's hysterical that people don't understand the humor and complain that GC doesn't understand satire. Don't call someone else stupid unless you're damn sure you're not the idiot.
It's FICTION people....get over it!
I just wish CNN reporters would learn to write. Would someone please put this story in AP style?
Very interesting. TV does influence thought, behavior, political and social views and more dangerously, influences negative characteristics in children, pre-teens, teens, etc. aside from adults. Probably more so.
Dangerous. Subliminally influenced thought and behavior can be thwarted though with MEDIA LITERACY.
I'd wish, hope, that Media Literacy classes would be introduced early in academic curriculums in elementary and middle schools and or high school.
That way, children, kids, teenagers can be better equipped at disseminating, re-thinking the damage that TV and stupid TV shows, even films and certain genre's of music, and lets not forget news media information/misinformation can do to a child's upbringing and future success.
Something to think about as you watch the boobtubes.
Another good reason to drop cable!
The shows are too clean and proper.
Global Compliance is owned by Goldman Sachs..Can we talk ethics violations.
Oh my god, does this article understand that these shows are parodies? they are supposed to represent situations that are not akin to everyday life.
Geez, talk about living in Mamby-Pamby Land. A satirical TV show will no longer be satirical if it applies real world rules. The group that did this 'study' must also be involved with analyzing movies and pointing out all the scenes that are not true to life and laws of physics, etc. If they were around during the original Saturday Night Live episodes, their heads would have exploded.
Just curous, but how long before you need to be castrated to go to work. Where women must ear ace bandages to cover thier breasts, and to LOOK at a co-worker is a crime?
Oh, it already is. Never mind.
LJO, and yet you keep reading it. Which leads me to believe you're not bright enough for the big boy news yet. Frankly, I'm surprised you understood this inane article.
Dear Author of this Article:
Your political correctness (diversity, equal opportunity, etc.) irritates the hell out of me. I hope you are actually a pair of one-legged, blasian, fraternal twins, so I can tell you, in the most equal and diverse way possible, o suck my d!ck.
The NCIS episode mentioned in this article had a discussion between Gibbs and Ducky about how women weren't equal to men in death. I hardly see how that can be a violation when it is in fact true in the military culture in which these guys work.
This is probably the dumbest article I have ever read. Its embarrasing to live in a country where this is considered interesting or newsworthy in any way.
I'm surprised someone named Mark Marino even signed this article. If my editor had told me to write something about it, I would of used agroup name, like CNN Entertainment Staff.
Yeesh, it seems like most of the people commenting don't understand the concept of satire. Do you lot actually believe GC is trying to clean up fictional TV workplaces? Let them have a bit of holiday fun! I wonder if these people complain about the yearly study on the effect of inflation on the cost of the 12 Day of Christmas gifts.
The violations make it funny- it's satirical. Some people can never laugh at themselves.
Plus freedom of speech. Bang.
Who cares? It's tv shows. The ethical violations make it funny. And NCIS only gets five? Have they heard DiNozzo speak? lol He's got about 10 violations of his own per episode. Love that show!
This is just silly – all of those "violations" are in the name of comedy. It's funny BECAUSE it isn't correct.
The question is: does anyone here care?? It's a TV show, for pete's sake!
Hell, People fly on TV and I don't believe Jack Bauer ever used the bathroom on 24. Kinda ludicrous to hold characters to the same standards to the world at large.
Interesting...I took the 5 mintues to follow the link to the Global Compliance website and guess what? Search as hard as you like, you can't find their 'study'...has it been removed due to embarassment or is it, as a previous poster suggested, just a fluff piece to generate some PR through a CNN reporter with a deadline who couldn't be bothered to do a 5 minute check?
Actually, it's summarized in the top link on their home page under "What's New?"
House is not House without those "violations of ethics". Certainly this shouldn't be tolerated in real life, but give me a break when it's entertainment.
I think that some people worry to much about political correctness.
As another poster noted, the content is generally intended for giggles and grins. People need to get over themselves.
Well, I think the Global Compliance and their participents now has 42 ethics violations for saying that those hit TV shows are too political and un-entertaining and they should be not watched. They should face a lot of criticism by those shows' fans and the FCC for this. And shame on you, CNN, for even mentioning about what the Global Compliance studied in this article. It is not worth our time.
This is by far one of the stupidest things I've ever read. Almost every single 'ethics violation' that happens on these shows is a tongue in cheek joke about the people who actually make ethics violations in real life. Specifically in 30 Rock Jack Donaghy's character is making fun of the typical corporate male elite who disrespects women, they feel to see the irony in what they're saying and it's absurd, I cannot believe that money was actually spent on such a silly endeavor
The drama "24" had 106 violations per episode. On one episode, Jack Bauer shoots an unarmed prisoner in the chest and then shouts "I NEED A HACKSAW!" His actions violate Policy and Process Integrity, Health and Safety and Respect in the Workplace.
So now we can't watch TV shows that we CHOOSE to watch, in our OWN HOMES, without being considered unethical??? My God (oh that's right, can't bring a religious reference into this either) but seriously . . .when in the world is the media going to just stop and get a grip!?!?!? These shows are for ENTERTAINMENT. I would love to see what the comments would have been when "I Love Lucy", "All in the Family", "Good Times", and "The Jeffersons" were on the air. They addressed some of the most racial indifferences and are still some of the most classic comedies of all time . . .by all races!!!!
This world is officially finished. What a pathetic time to live in.
Boo to Global Compliance
Has anybody counted the number of ethics violations the bible and quran commits?
What a waste of a great opportunity. The article brings up a VERY interesting point – that many TV shows – in fact – many of the BEST shows on TV – consistently violate corporate codes of ethics. But then it leaves the reader hanging as to what that might MEAN, which is the REALLY interesting part. It MEANS that much of humor IS that – breaking the rules and norms of accepted – and even, prescript ed – behavior. As others here have said, that is EXACTLY what makes it SO FUNNY. And, THEN, ANOTHER, even more IMPORTANT meaning might emerge – that, perhaps, we've become TOO POLITICALLY CORRECT in this country. Which, as it turns out, creates a FIELD DAY for good TV writers. Come on CNN, have some GUTS. Or would that violate your OWN code of ethics??
Ethics.. for a TV Show.. fictional drama, comedy, should follow ethics.. here I thought humor is derived from sarcasm.. that wouldn't be ethical now.. would it?
F___ everyone who wants us to be uniform and subservient to any one way of thinking and acting.
What is this steaming pile of crap and why was it published?
Everybody talking about this article not including Family Guy, did you actually read the article? It's focusing on the characters' work environments. Family Guy follows the characters to work very little, hence why they probably rank very low in this particular study.
The worst thing about this article is that the people who do this BS research probably make way more than the average American and by doing what? Watching television all day to determine if television is meeting the standards for "global compliance." I want this damn job. i could prattle off some BS violations seen in TV shows. Show me the money, baby!
TV Critics do not understand comedy. The shows are funny BECAUSE they make these gaffes.
Wow, give me my 2 minutes back
This is the most ridiculous blog ever. Of course it is not politically correct. That is the whole point. Some people just don't get it...I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees this.
Apparently, the more "ethics violations" the more Emmys. Keep up the good work 30 rock.
Is this a joke? Do they not get satire? The behavior of the principals on 30 Rock - certainly Jack Donaghy - is SUPPOSED to highlight how people shouldn't behave. The same is true of Glee; did they only come up with two violations? Did they watch any episodes where Sue's mouth happened to be open?
This is so silly as to defy discussion; how embarrassing for the Global Compliance folk.
On the other hand, I can't wait to see what the 30 Rock writers do with this. It'll be a hoot.
t(*_*t) t(*_*t) t(*_*t) t(*_*t)
What is this bunch? The Political Correctness Police?
Welcome to the REAL world.
What a sack of human excrement. I worked at global compliance, their management team is a total boys club. Not to mention we were the most non pc group of people to ever roam the halls of a company. It was more like "the office" than anyone would like to admit. My manager was a drunk and one of the top execs in the company let her drive home drunk. Another one constantly harassed female workers. Group of winners.
based on your comments, i would venture to say we worked in the same department there.
Sounds like someone was "unfairly terminated."
These violations make these shows funny, edgy or entertaining. True high quality shows, including funny, edgy and entertaining ones, don't need trash talk.
Dr. Cameron isn't even showing up anymore on House, M.D., so why bring her up at all?
OMG people. I don't understand how at least 90% of you have failed to realize the point of this article. Global Compliance is not complaining or trying to get any of these shows to change. What we're seeing if anything is a gorilla marketing campaign. This is what Global Compliance does everyday, they go into workplaces and show them where they can improve ethically.
What they did was satirical. They took what they do for work and applied it to some of our favorite tv shows and gave examples of where they would have had ethical violations if it were real life. They are not trying to get these shows to actually be compliant. Calm down folks, the sky's not falling here.
If these people at Global Compliance had a sense of humor I would agree with you. Sadly, these types of people do not find anything funny. America faces a bigger threat from humorless political-correctness Nazis than from script writers being funny or adding character.
We live in the age of thin skin. Like 100% of these commentators I find political incorrectness a breath of fresh air...or laughing gas...whatever. I am so sick of having PC shoved down my throat in real-life; it's nice to escape it and simply to laugh at how stupid our society has become.
We use to have government censors monitoring the TV programs to insure strict social and ethical codes, it was called McCarthyism.
In other news, Global Compliance deems Swift's A Modest Proposal "a terrorist manifesto."
Let's not confuse political incorrectness and unethical behavior. Just because certain tight-wads dislike something doesn't make it unethical.
we accept it on TV because in reality we know how stupid these policies are. if we could all just agree to ignore them the world would be a better place.
YET AGAIN, like 99% of the stories on this site, this does NOT qualify as NEWS.
all that crap is just that, crap. it's funny how all those liberals break all the rules in one breath and yet condemn anyone else that does in another.
I don't think that the critics are "typical Liberals". They are far out there. After all, this is a show starring Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin produced by Lorne Michaels! The people behind the show are not exactly GOP supporters!
It's uh acting? Shows are supposed to show satire, comedy all kinds of behavior whether Politically, ethically correct or not. Violations? That's the craziest f'in thing I ever heard. What do they want Vanilla TV shows.
Bob wrote: "This encapsulates everything that is wrong with American society. We are spending so much time, effort and money making sure we don't offend anyone.....When did it become required to make sure nobody gets their feelings hurt?"
Bob, it's ironic that in your complaint about nobody wanting to offend anyone you use an old anti-PC construction: "... nobody gets THEIR feelings hurt..."
Two decades ago it was correct to say "nobody gets HIS feelings hurt." (His referring to either man or woman.) Then women became powerfully offended by the universal "his," and "their" became the ungrammatical phrase of choice for "his or her." Why ungrammatical? Because "nobody" is singular, and now it's stupidly matched with "their," which is plural. So you see everyone is co-opted by the "no-feelings-hurt" crowd.
Seriously? Who the eff cares?
Once you tell a writer they can't write something (offensive or otherwise), then you're violating their right of free speech.
The political correctness of this country and where it's headed is nauseating.
Ever heard of All in the Family? # 1 offender of all time, and a great show.
Great point! As if "All In the Family" (along with 30 Rock, or M.A.S.H. for that matter) were actually ADVOCATING some of the behavior of the characters. Talk about these people missing the point of these shows!
It's a TV show! Not real life. It's a comedy about people being over the top and doing absurdly inappropriate things at work which none of us would ever do. And what the hell is Global Compliance? Jesus, what is this George Orwell's 1984. God forbid we have a laugh or two.
The media loves creating turmoil and sensation – they sure succeeded doing that with this useless article. Bravo.
These political correctness dictators are evil and a wicked malignancy in a society and to free expression and thought. Wicked wicked wicked. They wan to mute, squelch, control, run and ride roughshod over their fellow humans. Wicked.
They also announced the biggest violator of the laws of gravity: Superman.
Orwell, paging George Orwell. Social daydreaming by kindergarten teachers with a healthy supply of mouth gags.
Newsflash...JUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T SAY IT, DON'T MEAN THEY DON'T THINK IT.
and the LAST one is the one you NEED to work on. You DON'T work on it by telling people to shut up about, carrying on in whispers in the dark. THAT is MUCH more dangerous and in the end harmful. It WILL set up back a 100 years if not more before it's over.
This country is falling apart because we are being overrun with pu$$@es like the people that run this blog who obviously have no sense of humor. Bunch of hippie liberal bull@&$t.
Irony is that you attack the critic as being part of "hippie-liberal-B.S." when they show that they are attacking is from the people who created Saturday Night Live!
Newsflash, Peter. Lorne Michaels did NOT create 30 rock...Tina Fey did...so his statement is correct :D
Talk about missing the point of the show... IT'S A COMEDY YOU MORONS!!!! Geez can't we even have a sense of humor anymore... the people who wrote this article need to lighten up and have a drink... and get laid... for heavens sake...
The reason they do this on TV is because we can't really say what WE want to in our workplace without serious repercussions due to this dumba$$ political correctness sh!! It's funny and entertaining! Get over it.
House isn't ethical???? Noooooooo!!! (/sarcasm)
Where's "SOUTH PARK" on this list??? They've been offending at a much greater rate than any one show for 15 years now.
really?? politically correct on tv shows, why cant we stop worrying about the stupid little things...where is this country going...soon we wont be able to have views on any points or wont be able to say ANY jokes without someone complaining about how it violates "ethics"
That must be why 30 Rock is so funny!
Tina is a good looking woman...crap, am I gonna get canned for saying that?
Slow news day, guys?
Shut up shut up shut up! These are "would" be violations if these were real people in real life situations . . . but they are F#@$%G TV shows! What's next!? The electric chair for Dexter!? Making sure that the chicken doesn't get killed when you tell the next "Why the chicken crossed the road joke?"
Once again political correctness and the mind control squad are out in force. They made the Puritans seem mild in comparrison. Television is entertainment...duh. who is global compliance and when do we get a chip implanted under our skin.
I PAY YOUR SALARIES!!!!
Not being able to say what you mean, and mean what you say is a travesty. Political correctness may preach tolerance, but also preaches ignorance equally. As the years roll by, Anarchism becomes more and more attractive.
So let me get this straight: A show that features certain characters who are habitual ethics violators is, by definition, a show that violates ethics? Huh? What?
Better not let this nitwit group watch Family Bible Stories on the Trinity Network!
Umm Ugly Betty? Did that show go off the air quite some time ago?
Sorry, it's JMcTigue
JMcTique : It's called freedom of the press.
Whiney people are really sad. Lighten up. Debating ethics using TV shows...counting "ethics" violations in TV shows....this is nuts. Who gets paid to count this stuff? Get a real job and lets find real news. As for me, my Tivo is set to record The Office and 30 Rock. they crack me up becuase there is a hint of real life in all of that, and laughing at it is much more fun!!!
I believe the study was done for entertainment purposes. Why is everyone taking this study (and this article) so seriously?
Looked up "Global Compliance" what a crock, but I'm sure they make millions on political correctness. Indeed, we have become a world and nation of pathetic wussies with no spine.
I read this article thinking that the producers or writers of 30 Rock actually committed some crime. Wow, was I duped. The only people dumber than me are the ones who do these studies on SITCOMS...!!!!!
I'm sure the short-haired, thick legged woman who wrote this thinks it's important. Let think of her feelings.
Really, who cares?
Once they "sanitize" all of the programming, it'll have ZERO entertainment factor.
Isn't half the humor in shows like the Office and 30 Rock because these people are so unethical? I think that's most of the premise with The Office's Michael Scott character, his obliviousness to how inappropriate he is. What a pointless study and article.
I think a lot of people are missing the point of the report. Global Compliance is a firm other companies hire to make sure that their workplaces do not become lawsuit factories. It is not trying to demand that these shows only display ethical behavior, it is using them as examples of how ethics get violated in a humorous fashion meant to be remembered.
Complaining that Global Compliance is trying to ruin TV makes about as much sense as being shocked that enough highly ranked Air Force officers still believe in Santa Claus that NORAD tracks him every year.
Curse the person who invented the phrase Politically Correct!!
So what? Don't like it, don't watch it. When did America become the land of whining little bit#@#s?
The only violation we should be worried about is violating the First Amendment
What a waste. I hope the author was being satirical. If not, don't they realize that these shows are an outlet for the rest of us. The characters say what most of us wish we could say in our workplace.
The biggest shock is that television had ethics.
how did they miss Sister Wives?? what about cartoons which are so anti PC (that is why we watch) Saturday night live... all those soap operas.. we are losing the freedom of speech every day.. someone here in my State wants high school mascots to change the names of any team like Redskins.. Warriors etc.... The government choosing words that we can no longer say.... thank God for comedies and satires... otherwise we would be pretty damn bored....
It's ENTERTAINMENT. It's also your choice to watch it. Get over it.
If on any other network 30 Rock wouldn't have made it past the first season. Just because the darlings of NBC are in it is the only reason it sticks around. Its a pathetic show.
complete waste of an article.
I'll forward a conspiracy theory here and guess that "Global Compliance" is a front for some religious organization with a political-correctness agenda. Just as I refuse to live the way terrorists want me to, I won't bow down to somebody else's agenda of control either (be it religious or otherwise).
Thank a soccer mom for your New World Order.
Lighten up...I told myself.
No wonder the government has grown so much. Must be a huge bureaucracy to enforce "respect" laws! If we ended our obsession to legislate common sense, manners, courtesy, respect, love, and hate, we could cut our government in half. We are taking ourselves too seriously.
I find the Global Compliance guilty of bullying and disregard for artist integrity.
Did someone not clue in these @ss-wholes that it's fictional TV?!? Oh, damn, another violation....
hahahahaha I guess they don't watch it's always sunny in philadelphia! Comedy is supposed to break the rules. Fu Q!
Attention Global Compliance: It's fiction! These aren't real people and situations. Please return to the Galaxy Quest planet and resume watching reruns of Gilligan's Island ("Those poor people").
Don't you just love these studies that say absolutely nothing? It is a freakin' TV show. Who CARES !????
That's what SHE said.
What a buncha ... ! After eliminating ethics violations from the sit-coms, maybe Global Compliance should go after the news broadcasts next. Then we'd all be reduced to getting some entertainment from the dealer rip-offs in the local car commercials.
The real question is: Who cares? People need to stop acting like a bunch of whiny little girls with skinned knees and stop crying every time they get their poor little feelings hurt. Change your tampon and grow a pair!
Eric from Reseda is a t__t. Come find me, moron.
Many of these shows make fun of "Ethical Violations" as a results of an overly PC society. This country is becoming so PC I have to wonder how long before I must ask anyone in the bathroom if it is okay if I fart or take a dump. Don't want to offend any of the coworkers with obscene noises or smells now do we?
Seriously, 30 Rock topping the charts of bad behaviour? Have the PC gestapo never seen an episode of Family Guy? This is the most offensive show on the telly and I laugh every time I catch an episode.... get a life folks, it`s make believe fiction.....
We are stooping so low that we are now picking on TV shows. They are not real!!!!!!!! What a stupid organization that has found wasted time to think of this and post it!
I think anyone with half a brain knows that if you try even half the crap they pull in these shows, you'll get sued, fined, fired, or arrested. I think the people at "Global Thought Police" forget that television is escapism, pure and simple. Apparently some people over there need to be relieved of their rectal-cranial inversion.
It's a freakin' comedy. Relax, Francis.
This is nothing compared to science fiction shows, where it's normal to have time travel, faster-than-light speeds, telepathy, clones retaining their parent's original memories, and a bunch of other nonsense.
It's Hollywood. Everything can be violated in the name of making crappy "art".
They don't really get irony and satire, do they?
I find this organization offensive for simply being ignorant.
Dear Global Compliance Police: It is called satire. It is an extremely effective way to illustrate a point through humor rather than preachy rhetoric. It leads to lively discussion and dynamic atriculation of ideas. It facilitates communication, education, and understanding. So, if that's what you are ACTUALLY opposed to, say what you mean.
I don't really get the point of this article. To me, it sounds like the people involved have way too much time on their hands. The characters on these shows do these "violations" because it creates a funny situation. These "violations" are often meant as a form of satire.
What was the point of this article? More importantly, don't the people at Global Compliance have a life? Do they have so little do with their time that they feel the need to pick apart television programs to discover examples of politically incorrect behavior? I think there are some people in Global Compliance who are sorely in need of an enema.
We should round-up these retarded fartbags who violate ethics and herd them into camps with all the rest of the mouth-breathing defectives who don't conform to the Global Standards.
Are you kidding me? That is the whole point of the COMEDY and DRama is to have characters that violate normal behavior/acceptable behavior. Jack's comments are always offensive, that is his character. That would be really great to have shows that never allowed offensive people in them. 30 Rock is a sarcastic, satirical, comedy for god's sake. How funny is "That obviously capable lawyer is doing a fantastic job?" This PC censorship is as bad as any censorship. SHUT UP with your PC crap. On Glee, the cheerleading coach is brazenly offensive and that is the point. People can and do learn more from examples of bad behavior then just seeing a perfectly sweet and courteous world portrayed all the time. And in the case of Glee, it actually makes the mocking of minority groups, etc less stinging b/c it is utterly ridiculous and constantly exposed and addressed. Ever seen Pleasantville? That's what is it seems some would have everything be.
I love politically incorrect people................they make life interesting................I don't offend easily, so it aint no BFD with me. What does offend me are so called do-gooders that want to suck the life out of everything little itty bit of fun we have left........................
Guys, you realize that the point of the article wasn't condemning the use of the examples on the show, but pointing out the violations if they were in a real workplace. They're using the satire of the show to bring light to real issues in the workplace. They're not speaking out against the shows themselves.
If they're pointing out conduct that they perceive as "violations", then I would suggest to you that these people aren't the myrthful, satirical people you believe them to be.
Who cares. I don't want everything Politically Correct. PC has ruined a lot of innovation and harmed this country. If it's funny, it's funny.
Relax people, I don't think this article/report is aiming to condemn these shows.
these ppl realize it's a t.v. shows which are suppose to be a escape from our normal day to day life,so many important things to worry about than whats on t.v.,if u look back at any series thats been on t.v. they are all guilty
They should go after "America's Funniest Videos". That entire program is laughing at other people getting hurt.
Way too much PC censorship. Next we will be back to "Leave it to Beaver" programming.
Global Compliance = self righteous fat egoistical b**ches.
I find it a little bit more than a coincidence that the shows they cite as having the most "violations" happen to be some of the most popular shows on TV. This suggests that they're not so interested in correcting our shocking, shocking behavior as they are in drumming up publicity for their crusade. In any case, their "intolerance in the name of tolerance" position is laughable. As the great sage Berkeley Breathed once said, "Oh my gosh! LIFE is offensive!"
I was waiting for the punch line.... what a stupid article. Dig back about 15-20 years; when we invented the term "politically correct" it was a joke, we were making fun of people who would not take a position and selected their words to say nothing.
How lame can these people possibly be? Who did this research? The Society for People with Sticks Stuck Firmly Up their Wazoo? Get a life people. Better yet, get a sense of humor!!!
30 Roc ? the ENTIRE show is a comedy of Non PC stuff .
None of the characters are 'role' models for society !
Me thinks Global Compliance is a robotic program that operates of word recognition and NO humans actually have viewed the show .
OR they are foreigners who do NOT get American human .
the hazard / downside of having machines / robots manage human living . . .
I wonder how many violations they will find from reading comments from you a55hats.
Like that one.
Oh yes and TV is responsible for creating evil people! Those kids from columbine... they watched too much "30 rock". What a FARCE of an article.
Those chicks over at Global Compliance are totally hurtin' for a squirtin'.
Great comment. Funny how the more politically incorrect they are, the more popular the shows become. Perhaps the time of the thought police in America is finally coming to an end. I wonder if Global Compliance has been to a Larry the Cable Guy show yet.
....I just soiled myself!
WHAT AN OUTRAGE! Oh don't even get me started, ATTENTION study finds the movie Superman broke all kinds of laws of physics. We better post an article about it and a link to it on CNN's main page.
try better that http://www.SUPERSONIC.US.COM
This is part of what's TOTALLY wrong with the "progressive" elements of the U.S. It's called "Though Police" – used to only be in bad science fiction, now it's mainstream reality.
TV shows are "Entertainment". Most shows that we watch that are completely "politically and ethically correct", are not usually entertaining. I watch tv shows to be wow'ed and laugh. I don't want to feel like I am getting a lesson from the Amish each time I watch. (that probably wasn't pc). If you don't agree with a tv show... it's as simple as changing the channel or popping in your favorite episode of Mr. Rogers.
I just thought... if you're Amish, you shouldn't be on a computer anyway. Go whittle me a bedroom set.
There's also too many gays and not enough christians on TV!
These people work in a fictional Television company, the "chick Lawyer" is an actress
worst article ever...
wow... imagine if the rest of society was like this. it'd be just like going to work every day. people need to lighten up – feminists included.
Um... I believe this "study" is done as a satirical tool to bring attention to real-world issues. These people aren't real, and I am assuming that even people whose job it is to get paid to watch TV and come up with these things would have a very strong sense of humor.
And BTW, who paid for this "study"?
As a very wise man once said:
Get a Life already will you...It's just a TV show! it's not real!
Who the hell are these Global Compliance morons anyway?? ?Geezzz!
Jeezus, in half these cases the ethics violations are the POINT of the joke. The audience KNOWS the lines are unethical, and that's why they are funny. The humorless prudes who whine about this stuff probably thought Archie Bunker was being promoted as a role model. The rest of us have to have our entertainment censored to appease these witless lowest common denominators.
I wonder if the Global Comlpliance has ever heard of House...
I want to see Global Compliance's version of a comedy show.
Do these people at Global Compliance have any real jobs, or do they just lack a sense of ridicule? PC Police? We should do away with PC!
Global Compliance? What, these folks want to "export" "PCness", now? Good luck with that!
This is so ridiculous, just another group of people finding something else to whine about. It's not our fault they cant take a joke and they're some 40-something nobodies who live with their moms and have parental controls, limiting them to watching nick jr all day long. Cry wahh wahhhh
"40-something nobodies who live with their moms and have parental controls". I DO like this characterization!!!
Global Compliance sounds like they're made from the same mold as the folks who want to fine farmers every time a cow farts or some dust gets kicked up while driving down a gravel road or plowing a field. Geeze, it's not like the farmers are trying to BRING FOOD TO EVERYONE'S DINNER TABLE or anything useful like that. According to that lot, how DARE farmers mess up the nice, clean, sterile state of Nature?!
To both sets of Behavior Gestapo – get a life already. Preferably with ample amounts of therapy and medication. Who knows, maybe somewhere along the line your vestigial sense of humor and perspective will re-emerge. Maybe.
Hey–this is comedy. It's not endorsing anything. It's showing idiots talking and doing stupid things. When you see a clown you aren't meant to act like a clown. This is all a commentary on how stupid some people act. They are not going to show us role models. What's the point? They show the opposite. That's why it's funny.
My brain hurts after reading this story. Is this really what CNN calls news?
Maybe you should sue?
I imagine they would be very upset with the bible – all that begetting.
This is, undoubtedly, the stupidest blog post I've ever read, and that says something.
In 30 Rock the idea is to make you aware of the ethics violations by being very blunt about them and making them overt, as opposed to covert, which is more dangerous because it somewhat hides it. Its a thin line, but I think 30 Rock does a good job. This idiot organization is either ignore reality altogether, cause these things do occur, or talk about at it at length, which of course nobody would watch. Their choice is to make cover it up some more until its its gone- to quote Gov. Rendall: that's wussification.
The author would have need a calculator to keep up with all the problems he could have found on "All in the Family" or "Married with Children". Both programs were so over the top that if you didn't look at yourself a little you didn't get the idea behind the program.
Oh yeah; because television shows are REAL LIFE. I forgot...does that mean that I can get mental powers like the characters in "Heroes" or fight crime like "Psyche"? Nope; didn't think so. Global Compliance; you FAIL. Worst. Study/Reserch Survey. EVER.
What is missed here is that these "characters" are making fun of these "characters" who do exist in real life. The point is they are showing us how stupid these people look and sound. They are showing idiots talking and acting like idiots. That's the fun part. They are not promoting this behavior but commenting on it. This is what comedians have been doing for centuries.
Political correctness and cutting edge comedy. 100% compatible? Doubtful. Plus 30 Rock is using intolerance to make fun of intolerant people.
PS how did (the excellent) South Park not top the list???
These show don't promote intolerance they open people's eyes to the intolerance that's all around them.
Rock on 30 Rock.
What is ethical is a matter of perspective.
I would love to see how Boston Legal ranks on this!!!!! Good ole Denny Crane and Alan Shore!
30 Rock is awesome precisely because it tells it like it is and isn't worried about political correctness. If we all wanted shows that were politically correct so that nobody's delicate sensibilities might possibly somehow someday somewhere be offended, we wouldn't watch TV at all – we'd simply stay at work all the time where we're forced to put up with "sensitivity training" and political correctness and all that other BS.
It's funny that The Office has a lower average of violations than some "more serious" shows, considering that is its main theme.
I'd say our office has about about 10 per minute...The women are worse than the men and it is such a fun place to work! No one takes themselves to seriously and nothing is sacred.
Yeah, but that is part of what makes 30 Rock so funny is that they are not politically correct.
"Happy Holidays is what terrorists say. Merry Christmas."
- Jack Donaghy
Probably means this whole politically correct thing is useless. Maybe everyone should lighten up.
Groups really shouldn't compile lists like this. All it does is make people get worked up about "political correctness" which then detracts from real world cases of ethics violations and harassment.
Is this article supposed to be a joke?
WARNING! ETHICS/POLITICAL CORRECTNESS VIOLATION COMING . . . . this study and the results are "gay".
The NCIS episode to which this article referred was Ducky and Gibbs commenting that it is more difficult to take the death of a female co-worker (Kate) because they do not see women equal to men in death. It wasn't really an ethical lapse.
Go cry to your Human Resources director that the TV show you watched at home made your workplace a hostile environment... see where that gets you. I'll wait..
hahahah – got you laughed out of their office? weird. Who'd have seen that coming?
What bothers me the most about this article is the fact that CNN thinks so poorly about our ability to think for ourselves, and ends up looking even more ridiculous than they apparently assume us to be. As if the American public is going to witlessly be herded, in this day and age, into humorlesness. The real story is the miserable farce of a company that pays its employees to watch TV for this...where do they get their funding? Way to know the public pulse CNN. Lost one viewer here.
Glee only had 2 violations per episode? Sue Sylvester commits no fewer 10 in each scene she's in! LOL
I for one think all of these shows should be taken off the air! THE AMERICAN PEOPLE have for far too long been held hostage by the need to think for themselves, and we're sick of it, we'll believe whatever you tell us is truth, and act, only out of emulation rather than reason. and for that matter, I watched an episode of cops last week, so it's obviously okay to punch my wife, I watched an episode of Sara Palins Alaska and low and behold I had no idea she actually owned alaska, I watched an episode of the evening news. DOWN WITH TV! DOWN WITH FREEDOM OF SPEACH! DOWN WITH FREE THINKING! DOWN WITH COMMON SENSE! and DOWN WITH THE PEOPLE WHO THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY TO SPEND MONEY TO RESEARCH, AND PUBLISH THIS SKAT NEWS. HEAVEN KNOWS THERE'S OBVIOUSLY NOTHING IMPORTANT GOING ON IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW.
Then turn off your tv and stop complaining, loser.
Really? Ovbviously this company sucks if they have time to review all of the TV programs. Shouldn't they be focusing on real companies and real workplace problems? Business must be bad for them. This is TV, IT IS NOT REAL! Therefore they do not have to follow all of the ethics, etc. Seriously people!
TV is not a right. Get over it. Its all personal choice to watch it or not. YOU CAN'T CONTROL YOUR NEIGHBORS' THOUGHTS. STOP TRYING. "violations"... you're a violation of my ability to live without having someone always telling me I'm wrong. Plot of your favorite TV show: everyone dances around with unicorns with rainbows shooting out of their nose (oh.. wait, that would be too violent – rainbows shouldn't "shoot").... then at the end everyone high-fives but doesn't touch hands in the process because that's offensive and misogynist to do so. PC... "PURE CRAP" that's what PC stands for.
Some people have waaaaaaayyyyyyy too much time on their hands. To the "Global Compliance" employees: you all need to 1) get a real job and 2) get a sense of humor. You'd like it. They're nice...
30 Rock is the funniest show on TV and this is partly why – they are willing to take some chances and don't worry about offending the PC police.
Global Compliance makes money from counseling corporations on how to set and enforce PC standards.
This is NOT to protect the workforce, but ONLY to protect the corporation against frivolous harassment lawsuits.
Political Correctness is the devil and the closest thing to Thought Police we will ever see.
In another recent study the people at Global Compliance were found to have tighter spincter muscles and are known to bore people with inanity.
Oh my! Global Compliance? Cripes, protect us from ourselves!
Global Compliance won't be happy until they've stomped out all humor in the world.
Yeah... We know. It's fun watching people doing the things that are so obviously wrong for the workplace. That's what makes it funny. Honestly, you are such a queen!
you're serious...there is actually a committee that watches shows to point-out "ethics" violations...do these people realize that its just a show????? As the one commentor downthread indicated that's what makes the show so damn funny it balances the right and wrong of society in a 1/2 hour comedy
Apparently, the point of this article is that making a joke is an ethical violation.
"Apparently, the point of this article is that making a joke is an ethical violation."
Yeah... I think Global Compliance has that backwards. It's making ethical violations that's a joke. Just look at Congress.......
From Family Guy:
Quagmire: "What? I like to watch her box."
Peter: "That means two things."
Oh, sorry, this is a violation too. In fact, it's two because Peter admits it.
1984 for you...why do we tolerate this intolerance, what is the source of the "ethics" they are enforcing. Global Compliance attempting to censor petty "ethic" violations, why so that they can create president to censor other content later
from the time it took my to write my comment and post it, this article was already torn to shreds by many other people who find this nonnews a joke. on to the next one CNN, time to talk about the music now!
Are you kidding me?
Someone actually paid this company to research this?
Maybe that money should be spent researching REAL problems and the 'researchers' at Global Compliance should get REAL jobs.
Unbelievable *shaking head*
The people who are complaing about these TV shows need to get a life. Just change the channel
Jack Donaghey is my hero.
This encapsulates everything that is wrong with American society. We are spending so much time, effort and money making sure we don't offend anyone, that we can't produce a paper clip for a cost less than a battleship. When did it become required to make sure nobody gets their feelings hurt? So I start a a company and interview people for 40 jobs, and the top 40 candidates are all of the same ethnic, socio-economic, or cultural background, but I can't hire those people? I have to hire less qualified people so that my workplace can be diversified? What's the diversification, skill level? Responsibility factor? Education? Work ethic? No wonder our economy is in the toilet.
I think they're being cheeky, people.
What makes these shows so funny is that they do and say all the things most of us would like to. But in todays world everybody is so overly politically correct it's nausiating. Political correctness is the downfall of the United States, we're so worried about hurting other peoples or countries feelings that we've become a nation of pu$$ys and they all take advantage of that. The United States used to be feared, now we are a joke.
I think we really need to spend lots of time and money on figuring out why the cast of 30 Rock says what they do...after all it is one of the all time biggest grossing shows on tv. Lets not worry about this stupid show that glorifies teen moms....lets not worry about the fate of our schools...why cant Johnnyread? Lets not get some of these people off the streets and put them in affordable homes and suitable jobs. Jobs-find any kind of job at this point. We have cities country wide going broke. Corporations shutting down. If you can afford a car you probably cannot afford the gas to make it run. Lets just focus our attentions on a television show aimed at making people laugh and forget how crappy their worlds are for 30 minutes. GET OFF OUR BACKS AND BACK TO CONGRESS AND MAKE THIS MESS WORK.
I seriously doubt the editorial board had the intent of playing "PC police" in running this story. More likely, the editor who decided to run this press release appreciated the coincidence as much as any intelligent person does. 30 Rock is the No. 1 comedy on TV and its writer is the youngest recipient of the Mark Twain award.
Wow, sanitized for how you should behave, according to Global Compliance. Give me a break, that's why we like these shows! Also, storytelling is supposed to mirror and exaggerate real life, so it would be inaccurate not to include these so-called "violations" because you know people aren't PC IRL.
Wow. Good thing they didn't watch "Family Guy"
The whole reason these shows are funny is because they are not politically correct. Thats why we watch them ffs! Global Compliance can suck a 10 foot diqq.
Well, with regard to the comedies, the people who make the inappropriate comments in the TV show are generally reviled for the things they say and do in the shows (e.g. Todd Packer is despised by everyone except Michael Scott in The Office; House who is considered a medical genius is breathtakingly socially inept; even Jack Donaghy in 30 Rock is seen as chauvinistic, conservative, and ridiculously old-school, and is often told off by Liz Lemon for it) – I don't think this is perpetuating discrimination, but rather, quite the opposite, since these characters aren't people we would idolize for their social behaviour. At least, that's how I see it.
Oh please, 30 Rock is mocking political correctness.
i think it mocks those who use political correctness for their own gain and personal agendas under the pretext of giving a hoot.
Let's treat everyone the same, talk, walk and act by the same rules and celebrate diversity together.
Ones right to be racist is just as much a right as being diverse. Diversity of thought and speech also, not just the diversity that Global Compliance is "defending" by trompoling on others diversity
Glee offends TV in so many other ways than just this one. Who has time for this, isn't there something more important they are getting paid to do?
Global Compliance is a for profit business who uses this to get their name known. They are a business getting free advertisement.
If you're correct, Pat, CNN should *not* be helping them by doing their advertising for them. I wonder what Global Compliance makes/provides/sells? (Yeah... I need to check out that link.) All I can think of is that they want more money to do more studies. But to what end? These findings aren't likely to make anyone any money (except maybe GC). Not that making money is the only reason to do something, but then why have this be a for-profit business? What's the angle in that?
Rather than simply reporting what these folks want to poo-poo about great satire and drama, why doesn't CNN tell us *who* Global Compliance is? And, is there any underlying purpose behind their stated goal? Do they have business or political affiliations that those of us who disagree with their viewpoint need to know about, as they try to conform every last person to their mindset?
Now *that* would be a news story.
Perhaps these people should focus on REAL workplace issues and not made up ones on TV.
It's called comedy... but that would require the viewer to have a sense of humor first.
And short of the HIPAA violation, the rest are highly subjective.
How is Family Guy not on this list?
F'real! That has to be the most "incorrect" show running.
They are focusing on shows which are based on workplace settings.
Or Futurama or South Park? Now that's funny I don't care who you are... Wait what about Larry the Cable Guy or Ron White or Dave Chapple, or,or,or. Star Trek wasn't even PC.
Look real life is funny too. Enjoy it. Laugh while you can cause sometimes there are too many reasons to cry.
BTW... Isn't P.C. the thing I'm using to put this stuff on here?
This is the funniest article of the year. Thank you CNN for recapping some of this season's funniest moments.
Um, isn't the entire premise of 30 Rock an exercise in the absurd? Jack is practically a caricature of the Old Boys club, and his ethical issues are part of the schtick – the audience is meant to be shocked by his outrageous and outdated behavior and commentary. This is hardly the same story with a doctor on Grey's Anatomy violating HIPAA regulations. Sometimes unethical behavior on TV or in the movies is there BECAUSE it is unethical behavior. Wouldn't it suck if every character was a namby pampy, PC, lily white good citizen?
I was really expecting something more along the lines of product placement or hypocritical media ownership. This "study" is pointless.
What the author of this article fails to understand is that the "shows" don't violate any standards. The *fictional* characters on the shows are the ones who violate the standards. The shows themselves actually uphold most of these standards.
I'm going to go with so what? It's TV. Maybe these folks should spend more time helping actual people instead of drumming up business by criticizing stereotypical satirical work spaces with exaggerated behavior designed to elicit an amused reaction?
This has got to be one of the most absurd research/study ever. What a waste of time and resources.
Man, could you imagine this report 20 to 30-years ago..with All in the Family, the Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, the A-Team, Maude, Laugh-In...countless others.. These people would keel over from exhaustion just trying to count the instances of "political incorrectness". It's incredible to think that these people are actually paid money to do this. What a total waste of time and resources.
I agree with Ron. Who really cares? How about you show ethics violations in government procedures. If Television was dry and "ethical", t.v. would suck more, and LESS people would watch it. I mean seriously, 30 Rock is the worst? South Park or Family guy doesn't count? Or are you just trying to dig up a story? LOL, I don't know, but I think Global Compliance can just quit now. Send that committee to England and get laughed off stage with your "unethical" lines. haha wow.
"Ethics" and "Morals" are subjective. Abstract and created by Humans. I'm not convinced either exist
if they don't exist, then you are talking about nothing.
I don't understand the point of this article, at all. I haven't seen many of these shows, but the Office and and 30 Rock are both heavy on satire-those shows could not be satirical without the characters crossing lines. The fact the humor works shows how far we have come.
Exactly. It's funny because of the awkwardness created by the offensive language.
I mean, what about Mad Men. The whole premise of the show is detailing what the workplace used to be like. How could they do this "story" and not mentioned Mad Men? Mad Men, The Office, Thirty Rock, House all are making commentaries on offensive language and behavior.
@nwi...the point is, i mean rather, the purpose is advertising. Nothing else but to promote these shows. To stimulate the curiosity of the viewers and motivate them to use the remote control.
Global Compliance? Kinda reeks of, We got some time on our hands, sooo, we're going to do a study on....... TV shows, yeah.... TV shows. Well, Thank God those shows are not focused on being PC. I get enough of that from 8-6pm and it is DULLL!!! Entertain me and let me live vicariously, k?
I think with 30 Rock the whole show revolves around the "pun intended" idea. It thrives on being un PC.
who is this crap for?
Did you catch last night's episode of NORMAL where Stan politely asked Jane to please complete her trip reports and email them to him as soon as possible and Jane said OK? Hilarious!
Excellent! We need *MORE* PC "violations." Playing it safe makes for boring and BAD TV.
does anyone remember when CNN was a really good news channel? Used to be the best. Now it is very very marginal....dont believe me check the ratings. CNN start doing news. BBC style. Forget the pop news, teeny bopper info...Do NEWS. International as well. Consolidate CNNI with CNN. You are dumbing down America trying to play the ratings game with FOX which you cannot win. Until you realize this CNN will continue to be the biggest joke in "news"
I bet you work for NBC.
Just like the TV shows... If you don't like what's going on here then why are you even reading this or watching CNN? TURN IT OFF or GO TO THE NBC NIGHTLY NEWS SITE. Jeeez get a life and quit being so negative.
I believe there is a direct correlation to how funny a show is to how many violations there are. While I am not a fan of 30 Rock, I have heard it's funny. I personally love House. I wish doctors were actually like him... haha
While at the lonely bottom you have Glee. That show is about as boring as they come. Acting is horrendous and the show is forced into the musical numbers. Please cancel now.
If it is such a horrible show, why do you watch it? Obviously you have watched on multiple occasions to have that kind of judgement.
No TV show is dumber than the person watching it.
Conrad- no comment is dumber than its commenter
I'm not familiar with all of the shows mentioned but don't 30 Rock and The Office make those comments on purpose to be satirical??
Yes. But sadly way too many Americans seem to embrace the values and practices they see on TV as normative. Too many couch potatoes who don't think well for themselves.
haha yes! this is silly, how can it be an ethics violation if it's meant to make fun of ethics violations?
CNN IS GARBAGE
I do believe that 30 Rock is what they call a parody. Or perhaps satire? Or perhaps just plain funny.
Unfortunately, most people don't know the meaning of the words parody and comedy anymore. On the upside, lots of people are changing the English language spellings by only using their thumbs. Glad I'm old.......
if you dont like it dont watch it
Very well put. Thanks, I agree.
Damn, I learn all of my social behavior from TV. Maybe that's why nobody ever talks to me and I can't get a job. Next thing you know high school kids will no longer spontaneously erupt into elaborate song and dance numbers in class either...
Now that was good LOL.
Its TV RELAX PEOPLE!!!!!! Its not real, its there to entertain
Its a TV show, its all fake and made up. Get over yourself or go live in a cave.
I watched a Twilght Zone Christmas show from about 1960 the other day. Art Carney played a washed up, drunk Santa. A small boy got on his lap and told Santa " I want a gun for Christmas." It warmed my heart, but it would be censored now. A lot of the Twilight Zone would be Not PC these days. I remember a Lucy Show where Lucy buys Ricky a shotgun. And an old Dagwood Show where Blondie gives Dagwood a nice, shiny pistol for his birthday. Ah, memories!
Maybe Global Compliance should study ethics violations that exist in REALITY.
yes, but it's easier to brainwash the masses. No, excuse me, COMPLAIN that the masses are not being brainwashed to their point of view. That's far easier than doing any actual work in the real world.
this place must be run by a bunch of palin stupid people.
Great. The PC Police have lost touch with reality.
Who the F cares? People need to grow up and learn how to take a joke. If you are offended by television, don't watch it. It's called Freedom of Choice to go along with the Freedom of Speech that allows people to say it in the first place.
the author is pretty clueless.... how do u not point out in THE OFFICE where he takes over the s e x ual harassment meeting.... funny stuff... OH WAIT these are comedies... so what is the point of this study??? to soccer mom away comedies now? palin stupid is what this is.
I believe people are able to take a joke. That is why the shows mentioned happen to have the highest ratings on TV.
global compliance? that's the dumbest thing ever
I agree...Being noncompliant is what makes the shows funny. Take away all the "ethics violations" and it would be boring.
How many violations has this article commited in quoting the guilty?
Has this poll/author ever heard of Family Guy?
Yes ridiculous, if they cut out all the violations then I might as well tape my workplace and watch it. That would definetly be a snoozefest.
it's called SATIRE......People just need to lighten up
Society sucks! I mean you can't joke around without offending someone. Easy everyone, it's jut jokes and if you don't like the jokes, change the channel!
Exactly. Global Compliance might be a player in corporate America, but they've got no place outside of a business realm, unless it's as a practice range for their newbies. The good people at Global Compliance should go f___ themselves. This is entertainment, it's comedy. Nothing more.
i agree.....i can't believe i just read that whole article.
lol @ Sherry...so true
Global Compliance can suck my ...well, I wouldn't want them to call me a violator.
What a miserable world it will be if the PC Police ever get the power to censor TV. They simply define anything they don't approve of as a "violation." A pox on them all !
wow! They're TV shows, entertainment...this story was a waste of time. It's make-believe William, look in to it.
If I wanted to watch a show about political correctness, I would go to work and watch a training video......
Who wastes their money on these "studies" anyway!?!?
My tax dollars better not be funding the tools that make up this Global Compliance group. They must not have anything other than basic cable, because where is South Park? Or as someone pointed out, Family Guy? Those shows are great. My guess is they would rack up probably 20+ per episode.
you idiot watch too much freakin Television
you wonna know y the world the is so weak. Everyone is so sensitive these days. Get over it. OMG Diversity and Equal Opportunity and Respect in the Workplace were violated. Y doesn't the people that made this study research something that will actually make a difference in our world.
I love the subversive humor of 30 Rock and Glee. Thank goodness for some smart television and its satire.
Wow, seriously? I find it incredible there's even an article online about this. It's called COMEDY, people – the violations are what make the shows FUNNY! Watch Two & A Half Men some time – every episode is 21 minutes of hilarious "ethics violations" and in it's 8th season, I believe. Some people obviously have no sense of humor.
Most of these shows feature ethic violations for the very reason they're ethic violations. It's funny because it's incredibly stupid and wrong. If you can't understand that, you're either stupid yourself, uptight and without a sense of humor, or, part of the Global Compliance.
@Matt – Yep, writing this article with no mention of Family Guy or Seth McFarlane instantly invalidates it. Nobody packs 1/3 as much wrongness into an episode as he does. I would not be surprised if he has his own division at the FCC.
Mark Marino (author of this opinion rag) must be a white gay man trapped in an overweight black woman's lesbian body – oh, and confined in a wheelchair too.
I would hate to be him :)
quit being a butthurt these shows are funny you queen
my navajo friend is red and not offended by this
How's this for compliance: This article and the Global Compliance are retarded.
lol Only 5 instances in the Office episode they reviewed? That must've been the most boring episode ever.
Maybe the most worthless article on the most worthless group ever. Didn't they use the word groupthink somewhere in there?
Why do we care what these people think. They want us to conform to their generic world, where everyone is the same, except for them. Wake up America or soon all of us will be driving our electric car, powered by our windmill or solar panel and earning the same salary (equal pay for equal work).
Nothing said about Blacks though, I wonder why?
Thank goodness they are watching TV and not looking for the actual violations that happen every day. I sleep better at night knowing that "House" is being watched. Mostly, because I love that show. Build a bridge and get over it, folks. TV does not equal real life. If you are not aware of this, call House the next time you get sick.
Good grief. Global Compliance? How about focusing attention on something worthwhile, like world peace, feeding the hungry, improving education, or curing disease, instead of worrying about how many times fictional characters in TV shows and films talk about chicks. And someone needs to buy this group a dictionary so it can learn the meaning of the term "ethics violation."
All of this is really getting out of hand OR am I using a phrase that might offend someone with nothing else to do but try and find fault . The powers ? that try to be , stopped the original " Tom and Jerry" cartoons because of too much violence but check out the animation on TV now! The more death and destruction the better the ratings. Today, people must not have prayer, religion, speak ill of any type of crimes by any particular groups of people or express anger toward an aggressor or look at a woman with a low cut top or short skirt, etc! We are not to express religion publicly in adds or recite statistics that present facts that openly show certain groups are mostly involved in certain activities(bias) or look at beautiful women or men in public even though that's the whole reason for dressing that way (perverted) or be angry towards groups that cause great damage and/or death (we really don't understand). Now we must go back to McCarthyism and pick apart and condemn any type of realism on the TV series ,but never touch a news or sports broadcast because they are telling the public the whole TRUTH with absolutely NO BIAS ! I notice the main shows attacked are those with high numbers of viewers, hmmm someone needing to build their resume' or be noticed?
It's a comedy, not real life. These people can shove it up their politically correct butt holes.
Ah, so we must praise the ethical standards and morality espoused on the family friendly channels in Saudi Arabia and the UAE etc. They who tow the correctness of society and reflect the good will of the people will be rewarded by high ratings, or be beaten by religious police and beheaded by the god fearing judicial system. We should be so lucky to have such a system in America.
Tina Fey for President!
Might as well start with every black musician video and rapper music, to be hoest and fair
Dont need this garbage making society any more stupid, or immoral
Um..................anyone ever heard of Family Guy? How did it not make the list?
Being politically correct is over rated. 30 Rock is hilarious
The entire premise of 30 Rock is intended to poke fun at the inequities in the workplace- not to promote them! The headline was obviously intended to get get out attention...and it did! 30 Rock is an equal-opportunity satirist. Next, non-story please...
I think they are getting a bit ridiculous. 30 Rock is a comedy, and therefore will intend to violate ethics in the work place...that's what make you laugh. Secondly, in regards to Grey's Anatomy, it's important to show the consequences when violating HIPAA which the episode did. If we make Television perfect, it would be boring and unrealistic.
and the purpose of this story is what????
Wonder what the "Global Compliance" would say if they looked at our Congress.......just a thought.
Really? "Violations?" It's fiction, people. It's satire, for goodness sake! The majority of SITCOMS have always been based on deception to begin with. This is called humor. Get some in your organization, please...try South Park sometime. Sheez!
Is comedy, no?
Eh? It seems that even expressing a simple opinion to someone can be a violation of thier standards. I think I probably violate those a million times a day. It kind of makes me not want to deal with people at all if I would have to live by these rules.
What a joke! Does this group, Global Compliance (probably made up of 3 prudes sitting on an overstuffed sofa at a Starbucks), even understand that Jack and the other characters mentioned here are in COMEDIES?! As I read this I thought it was a farce that CNN put here to laugh at some of our favorite politically incorrect TV personalities. Jack is funny BECAUSE of his non-compliance because he does not adhere to the rules of the sensitivity game. I think somone – or many people – need to get a friggin' life!
I think people are too uptight about how people act at work. Most likely you know these people and the boundaries they have. If you respect t he boundaries, then fine. But when you can act and have some sense of fun at work, between co-workers, what harm is it. I worked at a place where they would have shut it down just because of the banter between us co-workers. It was fun, and no offenses were taken.
Any of you queenie retards ever heard of satire or sarcasm? 30 Rock is the BEST! Keep up the good work, Tina Fey!
I have not even read the other comments here but I felt this one required a response. THIS IS WHAT MAKES THESE SHOWS FUNNY! (or interesting)
No one wants to watch a show about a bunch of people sitting around being "politically correct". We are forced to do that eveyday in our careers. This is why we sit down and relax in front of the TV, to escape from the boring workday and watch something that makes us laugh or think.
The Global Compliance chair is obvious someone with absolutely no sense of humor. Humor should not be held to a compliance standard. We don't need a group telling us what is compliant and policing what we can and cannot watch. That's what a remote control and good parenting is for!
Only here you can read your horoscope forecast for 2011, 2012 and 2013 for FREE:
Get over it, if we wanted to watch real life that was always politically correct we would never turn on the television. We have enough touchy feely stuff in our day to day lives. TV helps get away from the politics and beurocracy of daily living.
that's just it. Jack Donage IS the show IMO. He's Archie Bunker with a modern twist. it's probably the funniest show on TV. I'm sure there are far fewer violations watching that show about two fat people eating hotdogs over laugh tracks. But I can do that at the mall.
What a sorry piece of junk this thing is... first off... who cares... it is FICTION... second off... I know you are stuck behind the entertainment desk... but come on.. find something worthwhile... this is basically a press release for a company no one has ever heard of who is doing work that is irrelevant... their work is akin to a govt study on cow farts.
This group represents everything that is wrong with the world.
Let's work on getting REAL world office compliance rather than the fantasy world. Otherwise, it'll be "Welcome to the LIttle House on the Prairie Network! All squeaky clean prairie, ALL THE TIME!"
To paraphrase Cameron on House, 'I'd rather have a 5 foot hose shoved where the sone don't shine".
Let's NOT get REAL America. Let's get REALISTIC!
really?....well i am going to call my congressman right now....i just can't believe that we still have these things being shown on tv.................................blah...blah......blah
If tou don't like it don't watch
Worst article/research project I've ever seen. Terribly boring and unimportant.
I've only watched a few episodes of 30 Rock, but isn't the insensitivity a large part of the point of the show? Portraying bad behavior is not exemplifying or condoning bad behavior. I guess they'll be criticizing Archie Bunker on All in the Family for racial insensitivity or (if I dare go there) The Bible for its many sinful events.
I believe this article's only covering live-action tv shows. If we're talking animated here, then Family Guy, The Simpsons, and South Park would all be at the top.
This article is asinine and a complete waste of time. The show is a satire! So either the writer/study is completely obtuse or knows better but still wants to report a meaningless headline about a popular show. Shame on you.
Isn't TV there for our entertainment? Who cares about real-life violations on fictional tv shows?
Global compliance of newspeak is doubleplus good!
Can I get a collective "WHO CARES"!! Its a comedy show, not a business. Do they know this?
Nice to see that someone makes money keeping score on who's hurting somebody's feelings. It's called acting. It's a parody on the real idiots we deal with in and around work everyday. Gee, these shows remind us to not be so politically correct.
I wonder what would happen if they would change them to be compliant? Would it be harder to make them funny?
How dare we even consider coloring comedy as a "violation." Characters like Alec Baldwin's are a better warning against the errors of being a bigot than a million PSA's.
Ya see, there's this thing called a "conflict", and it is "conflict" that usually moves a "story." And, these are fictional shows, and .... um ....
All In The Family was doing this years ago and it's considered a classic.
I LOVE 30 Rock, and what makes it so funny are the horrible ethics violations! I think people need to lighten up and allow themselves to laugh!
WE KNOW!, ITS CALLED ENTERTAINMENT !!
Angela from the Office wrote this article. I'm sure of it.
When 30 Rock goes away it will be a sad day for satire and comedy in the USofA.
Hello can we say "TV show?" can we say "not reality?" Really tired of the "nanny" orginazations out there trying to run our lives.
Be aware their are going to end up in the office near you.Social construction progects.
Holy crap... it's FICTION, on top of being SATIRE! This is by far the stupidest thing I've ever heard, that anyone would waste their time scanning TV shows for examples of ethics violations. Why do I suspect that a whole bunch of our tax dollars helped fund this study by Global Compliance?
And the point is....?
Glad to see that political correctness is on its way out.
A comedy show may just take it all too far, but it's a small price to pay to get our country out of the wimp phase it's been in for a long time with political correctness. Sticks and stones...!
Agreed! This whole is thing is about as stupid as considering real criminal charges against Macbeth or Hamlet for murder. Get a life.
Its a freak'n TV Show...people watch TV Shows for the entertainment. Most people who watch TV, like watching about how dysfunctional things are on a show...if it were politically correct, what would be the point?
