Steve Martin serves jury duty... Or does he?

Only Steve Martin could find the humor in serving jury duty.

This week, the comedian unleashed a series of trial-based tweets, firing off such musings as "REPORT FROM JURY DUTY: guy I thought was up for murder turns out to be defense attorney. I bet he murdered someone anyway," and "I like to cup my hands and say, 'you tell 'em Judge Judy,' then duck behind the other jurors. HUGE laughs."

But it turns out Martin may be guilty of misleading his Twitter followers. One unnamed spokesperson claimed the 65-year-old funnyman was not on a jury panel but was part of an L.A. jury pool. Martin's publicist Alan Nierob, however, told the New York Post he wasn't in a courthouse at all.

"He’s not serving jury duty, just tweeting as usual,” Nierob told the newspaper “It’s really great material, don’t you think?”

Martin himself finally came clean in a Twitter posting yesterday.

"Serious note: I actually will be on jury duty soon," he wrote. "I urge every citizen to experience it. I’ve never not been moved by the system."

I served on a jury, and the last thing I found the experience was funny. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Trust me. Unless you are an absolute hardened criminal, serving on a jury–watching a jury in action, listening to the other members–will scare you so straight you may never bend so much as a finger ever again.

The appreciation of comedy just like the appreciation of beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Steven Martin will be funny depending on whom you ask. Not everybody likes beer but that doesn't mean it needs to be taken off the market for the sake of those who don't like it. What I find very valuable about Mr Martin is that he still has the will to make us laugh and he is not out there doing just the oppossite as many other people are. Long live Steve Martin for his positive input and good intentions, that's what really counts. Merry xmass everybody!

Steve Martin is a little too smart for the average young crowd today. Although he gave up stand up a long time ago-he never really got it out of his blood. He is happier with the banjo nowadays. Maybe if Martin dumbed down his humor to satisfy the Dane Cook apostles, then the youth of today might consider hm funny.

    • Not Steve Martin

Steve Martin too smart for the average young person? I personally find him funny but his style was *never* 'smart'. His brand of comedy was always silly. There's nothing highbrow about a guy playing banjo with a fake arrow through his head. If he dumbed down his comedy any more than it already is he'd cause a tear in space time.

Ok im a old fart but i do comedy. SNL days of old. To all you hating little punks why hate on steve. You hate on steve you may as well be hating on all of them from back then. Then you probably have never seen Laugh in. Now that was really the first big start of comedy on tv. I have watch some of the old reruns and that stuff is still funny. But thats before some of you were born. Steve Martin is still funny look at the remake of the Pink Panther movie. If you say that wasnt funny then you have serious head problems. But everyone has there own taste. I just know that SNL was good when we had john bill dan eddie gilda jane and many more. So dont be hating on history. I am a man thats likes all comedy and to tell you the truth there needs to be more of it. You all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The " invitation" we get through the unreliable mail may be subject to scrutiny. With curb side mailboxes that are unlocked...how do we know when we are in fact getting our mail? Lots of room to wiggle there. Many or these people are not our peers anyway. Why should we "judge" them?

I agree with you and others that Steve Martin used to be very funny many years ago. He was hysterical in The Jerk. I saw him at one of his concerts in the late 70's and he was fantastic. The arrow on his head, banjo, etc. Other movies were funny too, like LA Love Story (or whatever it was).

BUT – in the last 20 years or so he just seems to try so hard to be an intellectual – which is funny, because he IS obviously of great intelligence. He just tries so hard – I saw him on Charlie Rose and watched almost the whole show, waiting for him to say or do something funny. He put everyone to sleep. He seemed so out of it. Not in a good way, either.

It's not that I expect him to be funny like he used to be. He's just not funny, imo, anymore. And he is dull and boring now. That's my experience of him... Goodbye, former funny Steve Martin.

Lol @ the people who seem to be personally bothered by me disliking Steve Martin. Live with it folks. Also, a word of advice, Celebrities don't need you, "random blog guy" to defend them.

I think anyone that follows him on Twitter would have assumed his jury duty tweets were complete fabrication, as he doesn't use Twitter like other celebrities do. He doesn't tweet about going to the gym or other true stuff, his tweets are exclusively absurdist. Convoluted scenarios involving monkeys, affairs with Eva Longoria, etc...

Personialy I feel that most of the entertainment section is a joke. Not all of it though. I just like to look at some of the articles (like this one) and laugh.

Hiro when you state opinions in tirade expect people to respond likewise. If you want people to recognize opinion you should avoid being confrontational. Perhaps using phrases like 'in my opinion' or 'i don't feel...', etc.

If it's his comment, it IS HIS OPINION!!!! You are in need of a lesson in writing!!! He shouldn't have to say "in my opinion..." YOU didn't say that it was "YOUR opinion" in your comment either.

Lol geez, are you guys his personal friends or something? Respect other people's opinions. Also, @ haa, I would find another story to discuss if CNN decided to update more than one story a day. :P

      Superhiro,

Given your taste in comedians you must find Dane Cook hilarious and are desperately hoping for the return of Tom Green.

Steve Martin is hilarious. One would hard pressed to find anyone more talented. You, on the other hand, are apparently so immature you can't get beyond "The Jerk."
