Seeing as the top 10 most followed users on Twitter are celebrities, it would only make sense that the top 10 retweets of the year were posted by them too. And (surprise!) they were, for the most part.
Stephen Colbert, who is not among the top 10 most followed users on the social networking site, had the most retweeted tweet of 2010: “In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles.’ ”
Colbert’s 1,903,437 followers don’t hold a candle to Lady Gaga’s 7,367,588. But that didn’t stop the funnyman from trumping the Queen of Twitter, who took the No. 7 spot with her tweet, “I’m beautiful in my way, ‘cause God makes no mistakes. I’m on the right track, baby. I was born This Way.”
Drake came in at No. 2 with an insightful post: “We always ignore the ones who adore us, and adore the ones who ignore us.” Lil Wayne, on the other hand, nabbed the No. 3 spot with a more, let’s say, simple sentiment: “Aaaaaaahhhhhhmmmmm baaaaakkkkkkkkkk!”
Justin Bieber’s “Te quiero mucho mi amor” was the fourth most retweeted tweet of the year. However, the pop sensation gets extra points for being the topic of another tweet on the list. Rihanna’s “Justin Bieber just flashed me his abs in the middle of a restaurant! Wow! He actually had a lil 6 pack! Sexy, lol! #Beliebersplzdontkillme” was the ninth most retweeted post.
The fifth most retweeted tweet came from spoof account Al-Qaeda on September 14: “Just noticed Twitter keeps prompting me to ‘Add a location to your tweets.’ Not falling for that one.”
In the No. 10 slot? Justin Halpern of "S- My Dad Says": “Don't focus on the one guy who hates you. You don't go to the park and set your picnic down next to the only pile of dog s-.”
And who could forget Kanye’s infamous “I'm sorry Taylor” tweet? His belated apology came in at No. 8.
