New trailers show potential box office muscle

Hollywood is unleashing trailers for some of the most anticipated movies of 2011 in the final weeks of this year, starting with "Thor," which could become the first blockbuster of the summer movie season when it's released on May 6.

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, best known in the States for playing Captain Kirk's father in last year's "Star Trek," takes on the role of the hammer-wielding Marvel Comics (and Norse mythology) hero, who is banished from his home of Asgard to earth by his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

The story, which co-stars Natalie Portman, almost comes across as Shakespearean, so the choice of Kenneth Branagh to direct makes sense. At the same time, most "Thor" fans will want to see how it plays into the upcoming "Captain America" and "Avengers" movies. Check out the trailer on Marvel's official website.

Thor has a lot of competition in May, not the least of which is Captain Jack Sparrow, who returns in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," on the 20th.

Johnny Depp reprises his role with a brand new co-star, Penelope Cruz, and a brand new villain, Blackbeard, played by "Deadwood's" Ian McShane. Keith Richards also pops up once again as Sparrow's dear old dad.

Check out that the trailer on the movie's official website.

Not to be outdone, the Transformers are also back. For the first time, we have an idea of the three-quel's plot, and it seems like we'll see even more of the Transformers' backstory. It's a flashback to the moon landing, and all is not what it seems - a Transformer has been discovered there (hence, the title "Transformers: Dark of the Moon.")

Director Michael Bay has posted the trailer to his website.

And if that's not enough rock-'em sock-'em robots for you, October 7, 2011 will bring "Real Steel," starring Hugh Jackman in a futuristic world where robots are trained to fight it out in the ring. Washed-up fight promoter Charlie (Jackman) gets into the business of training robot boxers. See for yourself here.

Are you looking forward to any of these movies? Which trailer is your favorite? Sound off below.

Maybe they should make it in 2D. Pull it off the screen and put it in a comic book. I can see spending 3.00 on it vs 80.00 for tickets+popcorn.

I cannot imagine this is going to be even close to as good as the Hulk was. While not much of a comic book fan, I enjoyed the Hulk movie as well as Iron Man. I know they are building up to an Avengers movie, but this one may be slated for the 'do not watch' pile of movies!

Along with Weekend at Bernies and the always great Chipmunks movies!

I'm looking forward to seeing Thor... Transformers? Not so much. The new Hugh Jackman movie seems "interesting." I'm just looking forward to the "Mechanic" remake.

I don't know waht you're talking about! Thor is, of course, Zues's son... it was an inter-pantheon mixer and Odin only had one eye on Thor's mother. Of course... I could be wrong.... I

Sorry guys, but Thor is not Zeus's son. And I have no clue where you'd get that from, unless they're trying to merge the Greek and Norse gods in one movie (which in my opinion is stupid. They're much cooler on their own), but ODIN is Thor's father.

Not sure where you got Zeus from but the story clearly says that his father was Odin..."who is banished from his home of Asgard to earth by his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins)."
