Obama's 'Mythbusters' episode draws big ratings

Say what you want about President Obama, but the guy can pull in some ratings.

The President made a guest appearance on the Wednesday, December 8 episode of the show and more than 2 million people tuned in to check it out. As we noted earlier, President Obama asked the mythbusting duo to solve the legend of Archimedes' solar ray, which was storied to be one serious weapon.

Although the team had handled such a fiery mission twice before, this time the President wanted them to examine the myth by considering  manpower.

With that many people tuning in, the episode landed in the No. 1 spot among cable primetime programs that night among men 25 to 54 and men 18 to 34.

Well plain and simple. Who cares and what's the big deal where he's from or born, so what. Dod'nt even really matter. 2nd ok! He spent the time it took to promote somethng positive on tv, think it was good.he's an out of the box president. He has style. Different than traditional, that's good! To me! He's doing the best that he can considering all he has to work with, the republicans that won't give him the oppourtunity to work his plan. And a very intelligent man, he trys for sure. I think he can get it done but trully it won't be overnite. Gonna take time to undue the mess he inherited.but he's open to negotiate that's a start. Far as the tax breaks the wealthy got theirs, plus they outsource for cheap labor, so they keeping more of it its the middle class that need the break! Actually no more middle class, poor and wealthy! Poor getting poorer, wealty getting richer. Pubs for corporate wealty and dems for less fortunate. If it's up to a pub. They'll cut out evrythng that helps people of less fortuneate.I'm not jobless or broke but I know them pubs, not out for me! Also watch to movie John Q with denzel washington. All folks need healthcare. I'll sacrafice for a plan that works, won't. You.

The show wasn't about Obama. The show was about finding out if it can be done. If they didn't have any schematics at all of how he actually did it, the I think duplicating the effect would be much harder. It's a fact, a flat mirror cannot focus light.. so if it was done with flat mirrors, I doubt the experiment was apples to apples.

I personally dont like obama but if his true intentions were to get children reintegrated back into the books then good for him. Obama is just like a chicken with his head cut off since hes been in office he had a plan the plan crumbled and so did he. HE HAS NO IDEA HOW TO RUN OUR COUNTRIES MILITARY. One day he is bringing home the deployed troops in iraq and afganastan then turns around and sends more troops. Make up your mind you cant boost our soldiers morale to tear it down again. Oh and dont forget cutting military funding when we have soldiers deployed and more training to deploy. Thats smart hey yall train to get ready to go to afganastan but how we dont have money for bullets... Use you imagination.... Sweet lets go to war After our amazing training we got. Come on dude either pull the guys out or quit cutting the military funding boys gotta get advance training which cost money and not to mention expensive reliable equipment that hasnt been shoot ten times already..

The parabolic mirror concept has been done on Mythbusters. They turned a satellite dish into a parabolic mirror, which did focus the sun, about 3 feet in front of the dish. And I'm taking about a dish about 6 feet across. Unless the original dish was mounted on a ship and pulled alongside the enemy, a parabolic mirror doesn't work. Besides, how good were the optics and mirrors back then??

It is sad that you people who voted, the republicans in office cannot see that you fell for the okie doke. Unless you are in the million dollar plus income bracket you are nothing to them. Our president is your savior. If you do not think so, refuse the unemployment benefits and other breaks he is trying to put in place in order for you to survive. Ask the republican base for help you out financially until you find employment and watch the door get slammed in your face. The majority of americans mean nothing to the republicans. From their actions they only consider themselves the "american people". To hell with the rest of us.

LOL. Of course CNN would have the MOST Obamanation supporters. That's why I came here to say, "He is the worst President in US history." Look at all the responses of Obama supporters acting like children rushing to their messiahs defense. Most can't see the writting on the wall. Blind leading the blind and defending the ignorant with catch phrases and immature remarks regurgitating what someone else said earlier on the news or on TV shows. Now, like our President, I have to go and leave this discussion early, I have a Christmas party to attend. :P Now before you respond please read the TOS and Rules of Conduct linked below your response form. Thanks for the laughs and I wish everyone a great holiday season!

And I knew none of them saw the show or have any idea as to how much of Obama's time this took.

» What is your major malfunction?
1st of all It doesn't state anywhere that the President considers this THE highest priority item facing our country. 2ndly where is it written that the President spend 24/7/365 Focused solely on any ONE issue facing america and neglect or avoid EVERYTHING else? 3rd inspiring education & study in our youth MOST CERTAINLY IS & SHOULD BE a top priority For ANY President. 4th who's to say from what part of his daily itinerary (personal or business) Pres. Obama drew those five minutes from? eg: How do you know he didn't give up his lunch or dinner break to film this education inspiring segment? I could go on & on. Why don't you just come out & say it : you simply dislike the man & will do or say anything to critique him even when doing so makes YOU look like a fool. That in your pathetic, feeble, narrow mind the man can not do anything right? And you don't care how petty and uneducated it publicly shows you to be. Hey is that it? Are you bitter because the sitting president when you were school aged didn't take 5 minutes to make a TV appearence to inspire YOU to study in a life long pursuit of continuously educate yourself? MCO39 – Clearly Sakkas did not use parabolic mirrors, so Mythbusters used flat mirrors too due to the technological limitations of the era, when did you make that up?

Flaming Rowboat. To test his assumptions, Sakkas ordered the construction of dozens of flat mirrors that were covered with a thin reflecting sheet of polished copper.

Hilarious. The young U.S. needs to let the Civil War sons & daughters and Civil Rights movement people die. Wake up. Help fix the World economy whose death began here and stop in fighting over color. At least Europeans know leave hate alone when the 'neighborhood' is on fire, not just the 'house'. The guy was on a TV show and all this hate. Clinton got the country out of debt and people hated him. So silly to stand on priniciples of anger, frustration, and division when they are all Not Real and have no substance. :-) Vote America, that's the only way you will be heard. Blogs don't get it. Glad we have the freedom to use them and speak freely though. Hmmm, where did that come from? Hate? Ignorance? Intolerance? LOL. And the rest of the world just watches and laughs while centuries of hard work and bloodshed go down the drain due to Anger, Old Hates, Old People, Greed and Ignorance. Save yourselves.

For those of you complaining about the job our current President is doing:

No matter who the President is you will always have a reason to complain regardless of what good he (or she) is doing! If only one child decides to become an engineer after watching this episode with Obama & the Mythbusters team, then it was worth every second of his time.

Maybe instead of complaining about the current President, you should get a proper education yourself to become the next President of the United States of America. Then you will see first hand how difficult the job really is. Especially when your trying to fix all the screw ups the previous President left for you to clean up!

Can I suggest starting with Kindergarten, unless you feel that's too advanced and should begin with preschool?

The problem in our society is not just centered in Washington. The division of Americans between party lines is the greatest sucess to keeping the US from being an premeire superpower. People on the right, left, and middle have an abundance of conspiracy theories and as a result have formed the idea that government is too powerful and watching our every move. Who is the government? We are the government! The governed not only owns the government, but is employed by the government. We elect officials to public office to represent our interest, but when that happens they wind up representing their interests. I want low taxes, but I'm willing to sacrafice to pay higher taxes with less income to ensure the future of our DEMOCRACY. OUR LEGACY AS A GREAT NATION RESTS ON THE DECISIONS WE MAKE TODAY. JOB GROWTH, RENEWABLE ENERGY, REVAMPED TRADE POLICY, AND A FAIR TAX CODE SHOULD BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL TALKS IN WASHINGTON! NEGOTIATIONS IS A HARSH TERM... The problem I see here is the fact that we are so divided on stupidity and minor issues is the reason this country is falling to common idiocracy. Our inability to come together and realize the major issues facing us as a country has led to further downfall as the leading edge to creating a poor and dumb down America. The problems are very simple when broken down its not about age and considering those under the age 0f 30 to be the dumbest voters in this country or about race or background of the president. The matter of the fact is that he is president and there is no going back so the time is to move forward and to adjust our focus on the problems of now and those too come. First our national deficit is far too high and will eventually come down on us in the form of taxes whether we do tax breaks or not we will lose other portions of benefits or have to pay a different tax to settle this debt issue, things that we will find more reasons so separate on due to belief or ideas we have. Second, we need to consider the jobless rates the plans that were used to create jobs are short term and do not focus on long term needs and the reason of that is to ensure political affiliation we fix short term we get votes however the need is to forget politics and focus on the American people who are struggling to survive with the ever growing prices of the market. Third, the focus was on the banks who were saved by us the American people or tax paying dollars kept them alive and now they are focusing on taking homes away again after they got their money and paid off their ceo's. Fourth, is how to unite a nation under the basic philosophies and principles the country was built upon. His focus on education I see yes is a good thing is it better to go on a tv show and push this idea I personally say no the idea needed to focus on going to schools and understand the classroom environment and push the education focus there. Congress is filled by the largest groups of idiots I could ever consider due to the fact that they are so set on political votes rather than the people who voted for them in the first place. The answers are never easy but the truth is we need to cut back spending and focus on the people here to strengthen or own markets and economy and let the rest of the world focus on their own situations. We are supposed to be the best country in the world and the leaders in that respect and we are sadly failing in the great divide we have ourselves in. The need to come together as a country and let the government know we want answers now and until they give answers they do not deserve their long vacation breaks every year while we are starving and losing our homes on a daily basis. We want solutions that take care of those truly affected and not those who are rich and store the money to not be used for years to come. The rich may pay a good majority of taxes but without us the country would fail we are the heart, soul, and backbone to the entire operation of the country. We provide the defense, we provide the economy, and we provide the most workers in this country and spend our money more than the rich. Forget about politics and this sad quibbling we have between us because I have I am a republican, I am also 24 years old the group in which has been stated over and over here that is dumb and full of idiots who shouldn't vote yet I am more realistic than most of these bs comments left here. I am also a soldier who is deploying soon and I love this country and all of the people in this room for being involved and proactive yet it saddens me that we gripe of the little things rather than deal with the real problems ahead. The solutions are not in tax breaks and they are not in giving petty little 600 dollar checks to every American it is in utilizing the means we have to initiate new revenue to push the economy in the mode of spending a la the American people not the government therefore increasing revenue in business and pushing the need to increase the number of employees to handle the increase in demand. The need to get the homeless off the streets and put their tails to work and getting rid of long term unemployment benefits. The unemployment benefits are so lucrative to many that they have no urge to find a job when they can sit and get paid more than they would to work. The ability to take care of our veterans since they are not taken care of properly and the need to quit spending as the government and save to pay the deficit off. I may not know every detail in how to do this as I seek knowledge everyday to learn how to help solve by doing my part but I can tell you I am more willing to look for ways to give input rather than argue over petty crap and quibble over nonsense. Mythbusters did this experiment twice with negative results regarding the death ray possiblity. The link I found shows that a "death ray" is achievable.

I know what liberalism means. The comment was made in jest. Analogy time. Our country has turned into a yankees vs red sox game. (dem vs gop) The owners and those in charge set wages and salaries. Raise prices on tickets and concessions. Then spend more on salaries. Then charge more for tickets. While the fans scream that each others teams suck. All while there are plenty of other teams and fans who just ask for reason and fairness.

The Myth Busters are great. I only wish they could be a viable program and tackle some of the most pervasive myths - namely religion. For example, I'd like to see them tackle the Catholic myth that bread administered by a priest becomes flesh when a person eats it. Of the Mormon myth that ancient Americans were Hebrews. Or the Jewish myth that the world was once covered by a universal flood.

Oh My God...just look at the comments on this blog. This country is not only going down the tubes financially, thanks to greed and "scratch-my-back" mentality, it is showing the world what uneducated, hate-mongering idiots we have become. No wonder other countries excel in science, math, etc. Too many Americans do not appreciate the importance of education, don't know proper speech or even care...just spew anything ignorant. Just look at the spelling and grammar used here. Mr Obama is OUR President whether you voted for him or not, he is still OUR President and the leader of the free world. We finally have a highly intelligent, common sense person leading us and that is a great improvement to the the last President in office...OUR President Bush. What I don't understand is the fact that many of you who obviously don't have much of an education feel you can evaluate the job President Obama is doing. You poor, illiterate souls are biting off your nose to spite your face. Do you truly believe that backing the Republican Party, Tea Party, Fox News, Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly is to your advantage? Do you truly believe that they care about YOUR concerns, care whether YOU can find a decent paying job, or any job at all? Do you believe that by giving the richest in this country thousands of dollars is helping YOU put food on your table? Do you care that YOUR children are forever saddled with added debt while the rich laugh all the way to the bank? I give up. The BEST comment I've found on this blog was made by DAN and I want to re-post it here. May God Help us All in our stupidity, hatefulness, greediness, and disrespect for each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And I quote:
    Dan

@Ann: As someone who lives in one of those socialist Utopia's you dread to imagine. Trust me, Obama isn't a socialist. Progressive thought isn't going to kill you.. I can assure you socialism isn't some evil regime that steals your money in the name of society.

Who knows, maybe if you opened yourselves up to new ideas, you wouldn't be considered a second rate nation that coats itself in military power and moral superority to hide the embarrassment of losing your once great and beautiful nation to incompetence from every level and walk of life.

Why all the emphasis on education?
By education, do you mean Americans should be snotty and arrogant? And not as serious, tense or rigid as another type of nation.

Have you been around for centuries to assert that this is not common
discussion? How do you know America is getting more stupid? Are you basing your assumption on statistics?
And how exactly did America lose their once great nation? Do you mean by the recession?
But you also comment that you want socialism and equality. Didn't Obama make the first step toward with the recession?
And I really don't see how the recession is that terrible. It's overblown.
I agree that some comments are rude
and a little bit unproportionate to this

He handeled Saddam Husien as diplomatically as he could. That madman was threatening the entire Middle East region. Having served in the middle east, I know that as fact. BUSH ALSO WENT TO THE united Nations, our allies before any shot was fired at Iraq. He gave countless warnings to Saddam and so did the rest of the world. Saddam violated no fly zones, time and time again. I know this will start a firestorm of WMD's responses from you Liberals. In the 1980's, Iraq was at war with Iran. This begs to question: if a different administration were in the White House, which shows would its President or First Lady appear in? Would John McCain appear on a History Channel special on the Vietnam War? How about Hillary Clinton advocating for children and families? Could either Mitt Romney or Mick Huckabee attract viewers by guest appearing on either CTN (Christian Television Network) or a televised Sunday Mass? This isn't about the phony left / right paradigm anymore. Follow the money. They're two sides of the same coin and most americans are either too stupid or too blind to figure that out yet. The same corporate agenda for the elite gets passed either way. Sort of like John Kerry and Bush running against each other when they belong to the blue blood establishment class. Or Jimmy Carter running as a 'Peanut Farmer'. Gimme a break, he was a commodities broker selling peanuts on the STOCK MARKET. The American people are LIED TO so it's pretty hard for them to have a real opinion based in some small shade of fact. They still think they can vote their way out of problems by installing a new establishment bred puppet. It's easy for the monied class to get what they want when you only have two parties that win every time. And if we got a 3rd? They'd corrupt that one too. We need to get the corporate big business cyst out of government first, and the private banking cartel that is destroying our country, as well as England, Ireland, France, Iceland ... you name it. They had a 'housing crisis' in the UK, and Ireland TOO ya know! The bankers run the entire game, and you had better believe they don't report on it. Why do you think the boarder remains wide open but they want us all afraid of terrorists? It's a GAME. Don't be STUPID. THINK FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE. I don't like Obama, and guess what I REALLY didn't like Bush! HOWEVER, I think they're both 'up to' and for exactly the same thing.

They're tools for the elite. Chess pieces. Until the American people realize their financial system is a hoax, then they'll never realize every political figure that protects it by not exposing it is a hoax, too.

Hey MC039! While you might understand what should have been done you completely missed the point of the show. President Obama was on there to make a point to spark interest in our youth for science and math. Most of the rest of the world is leaps and bounds ahead of us. Just look at how many people (like yourself) piped in. That's exactly what they wanted. They wanted to make people think and talk about what's important and to stop slinging the mud around on all sides.

I voted for Obama, and I will again. I don't think he's done anything amazing yet, but I think he's the best thing for our country at the moment. Certainly I would take him over that fraud Sarah Palin.
One thing though, if you were president, and the Secret Service just told you that America was attacked, don't you think you might be in a state of shock for a few moments. There are a lot of things to criticize Bush over, but that wasn't one of them. I think his reaction was very human, and i think most people would have responded in a similar manner. I remember when I was informed of the attacks and I knew I'd be going to war that I couldn't even stand up....it was a terrible moment in history....

It was a tremendous task because the majority of the Ameican people are not very bright. I hope he won't run for a second term, he deserves to enjoy his life with his family..he is way too intelligent for America. He pushed through the health care refom, he had to defend his color, his birthplace, his religion etc. to our guntoting population.

Start at the top of the comment list and see how many people are name calling and of those people are in total support of obama. Seems to me like those who truly support obabma just support him to do because they think it is cool or the "it" thing to do. The best president ever? really? Please enlighten us. I did not vote for him, but just because i didnt does NOT mean i liked or voted for bush. he was an idiot plain and simple, he scooted through office fast with doing very little. Obama is not a savior to this country he is just a man who like bush has NO clue. IF he truly wanted to bring this country back up to its former glory he would actually do some things to help. I'm sorry but getting on Mythbusters in my book really doesnt seem like its gonna help the country. Go out cut senators, and congress' pay by 75% and give that money SAVED to veterens or a "congressional stimulus to the people"
Now the nay sayers are going to start the name calling and it will just prove who the real robots are who have no real clue, but just voted for obama as the popular thing to do

How sad our President stooped to appear on one of the most illegitimate broadcasts on television today! "Mythbusters," and the actors on it, promote themselves as being credible scientists. Because they cannot recreate a situation (e.g., risks of using cellular phones while pumping gasoline), they declare such things to be "myths." They choose to not be "confused with the facts" gleaned from numerous incident investigations of professionals.

"Mythbusters" is just another in a long line of irresponsible, mind-numbing television that should be sent down the road. The two freaks of nature who "host" this program have zero credibility in the world of thinking human beings.

I am disappointed our President would tarnish his already deeply stained reputation by lending credence to a couple of freakish beings who should be anywhere but in the public eye!

It truely baffles me, how imature most people are. First off, if you voted for Obama or not, he is our president, and you should repect the man for that. You think it is easy doing a job that he is doing? Do you honestly think you could do better? I doubt it. He is doing a good job, but the congress and senate will not allow him to succeed. Too many problems will arise if he succeeds in their eyes. (like they may have to start actually working and pulling their own weigth)
Next you can be religious and believe in science. I am a good Christian and I am a science teacher. They can go hand and hand. Education is extremely important, we are falling further and further behind the curve everyday. We want our country to be great (and it is) but if we dont start supporting our leaders, and start educating our kids we will fall far from grace.
And for those of you who mentioned that President is only a figure head, well I hate to tell you this, but if you support the president, and the job he wants to do, and tell congress and the senate, and big intreset know that you do with your votes and your money... guess what something funny will happen....he can get his job done and we can once again prosper a great nation where we should be..
This comes from someone who is:
    1. a realist
    2. A Christian
    3. a military vet.
    4. an educator in the public schools.
    5. some who belives and loves the country he lives in.

Anyone who thinks Obama is a lousy president has a very poor memory, and even worse powers of observation (or perhaps intelligence)? I am someone who was around when Kennedy was president and I must say it is difficult to recall having a president this intelligent, thoughtful and hardworking. Clinton was certainly intelligent but had his problems and sometimes let other issues come ahead of what should have been his prime concern: the country and its citizens. Obama is wonderful and I am so glad to see there are a good number of people here who appreciate it. Too many think someone strong is someone loud, aggressive and imbued with qualities better associated with a bully than with a courageous person. This president is someone we should be grateful to have in office. And by the way, Kennedy was indeed charismatic, but so many of his wonderful speeches (and even his book) were not actually written by him but for the most part by Ted Sorenson.

I would support lowering the manufacturing tax from 30% to ±5%, but I still think that companies that ship jobs overseas should pay more taxes since they do so in order to avoid paying that pesky minimum wage. It's mind boggling that in 21st century America we cannot duplicate something that a solitary genius was able to do in the 3rd century B.C.!!

First of all, Archimedes used parabolic mirrors, not flat mirrors. This makes all the difference in the world. A parabolic mirror will focus the entire energy of the solar reflection onto a single point. All radio telescopes and large antennas (the kind that are used to communicate with space probes etc..) are based on this principle discovered by Archimedes. The people at Mythbusters have now done the experiment twice and each time it's been done wrong!!

Second, the intensity of the sun is much greater in the Mediterranean than in San Francisco. When a similar experiment was done in Greece in the 1970's the ship burst into flames almost immediately.

It's no wonder that President Obama wants to inspire young people to pursue science and math, because if Mythbusters is any indication, we are in big trouble.

Maybe not the best President ever but he seems to care about making America and World a better place to live in and not how much money he can make for his friends.
Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt are hard to top but like Obama they cared about a better life in America, while Jackson and Grant maybe have been the worst for corrupt governments, while being great leaders/generals in war.

I don't love the man or dislike him, he's simply my president and I did vote for him (and would again)

But I have to ask all these people that say "he's the best president ever"...WHY? I mean really? What exactly has he done that makes him the best? He just spent 2 years rulling all 3 branches of goverment really, but it's not exactly all roses out there is it? I mean he could have had virually anything passed, it was pretty much 2 years of a blank check, but I don't see as things are really any better off at all...I like the man and respect him lots, but don't see where he can even be mentioned in the same breath as Kennedy, Regan, Teddy, FDR, or any other 'great' president...

Most likely you are the result of lazy parents whom sat you down in front of the tele instead of making you do your studies. Your regurgitated partisan ramblings emit the foul stench of The Daily Kos, or Rush Limbaugh. The race baiting comments are meant to smoke out the racists among the bloggers, yet they do more to show your own biases than they are effective at achieving your goals. I can therefore pronounce that you are indeed a tool. Case solved.

There are ways around bigotry trust me. No doubt the deck was stacked against African Americans, but over the past few decades it's been all self destruction. I'm poor and get free grants for school as well as food stamps. I'm a year away from my degree. There are plenty of people who have tried to hold me back too and most of them have been my own color (white). You have to brush off the haters and handle your business or you will forever be blaming everyone else for your failures. No politician of any color can make things better. There is already help for the disenfranchised, but it requires equal effort from the citizen.

Let's try this. All u individual that have such criticism about President Obama, try to put it in an intellectual argument. Give it some substance. Cause you're starting to sound like inbred. Dumb down, non-educated, follow the crowed masses, that have hatred in your heards; with not a clue to your own reason why. This President came into office under a whole bunch of BUSH. I find it ironic his name fits exactly what he did as he told the American people to open wide and swallow as he squatted. Not wanting to blame the "socially acceptable" president for the down turn of the economy, u turn to the "socially challenged" President and say, "u did this." Not even taking in account that we were in a surplus in the Clinton year, and the first thing "Bush" did is put us in a deficit in the first year of his term. A trend in which he continued for two terms. I like that statement earlier. "How long does it take to clean up "Bush!" True power in creating, not destroying. Any dummy can mess something up. As "Bush" was! But let's get back to your banjo playing, group minded, got yo white starch guard sheet pressed and hanging in plastic in the closet, obstructionist to a forward thinking society selves. Come up with something that doesn't have hatred written all over it. "Was he born in America, He spent five minutes on TV", are u serious! Let's have a discussion on what is anti-American: Large American companies and business that out source and don't want to bring our jobs back. Is the GOP. anti-american for supporting these companies? How about excepting moneys from foreign Government to fund their elections. The some ones our jobs have been out sourced to. Come on. Let's have an intelligent discussion. Is that possible!?

I would have respected him more had he gone on TV to tell us it's none of our business. Just my opinion.

I really don't see where there is a problem with this. President Obama has always looked for "teachable moments" to promote his programs (and there is nothing ojectionable about this one), and we should all know by now that he is drawn to a camera like a moth to a porch light. The President is just using some free advertising time to promote education (at least it would have been free if we didn't have to fly him there in Air Force One – but that's just the way it works) and the US needs to take advantage of all the free stuff it can get right now. I did have a problem with him blowing off the Boy Scouts to go on "The View", but I don't think he really cares about what I think.

All you people arguing about whether the left or the right is best need to get a clue. If Nancy and Harry had their way, we all would make $100 an hour, but we'd pay $96 of it in taxes. If the Republicans had their way, we wouldn't pay any taxes, but we'd only make $4 an hour. Either way we only get $4 an hour! Until a party emerges that actually cares about the middle classes interests instead of just their votes, keeping power separated between the two parties is the only way the middle class can exist. This of course doesn't apply to Chad, because he's already rich.

Almost a year ago, First Lady Michelle Obama made an appearance on a special episode of 'Iron Chef America', in which White House Chef Cristeta Comerford and celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse each teamed up with Iron Chefs Robert Flay and Mario Batali, respectively. In an effort to promote healthy eating and local produce, Michelle Obama presented the theme ingredient: various types of vegetables grown in the White House organic garden. Each team of two chefs picked up whichever vegetables they wanted to prepare a meal with before heading back to the studio in New York City. While the actual vegetables they picked were sent to a local food bank in Washington (as shipping them to New York would defeat the purpose of picking local produce), the same types and numbers of vegetables each team picked were available in New York.

Now, President Barack Obama appears on 'Mythbusters' in an effort to promote education, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, asking the Mythbusters to revisit one of their classic, incomplete myths. This is on top of twice publicly submitting his bracket for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This First Family seems to be making use of television appearances to promote what sincerely they think is good for the future of the United States of America (not counting the basketball, which is not bad but not as important), and I am encouraged by that.

Would Sarah Palin and family draw in ratings with an guest appearence on 'Deadliest Catch'?

@SCdad: the bible uses many metaphors to teach people certain things. I'm not a christian, but I've read enough to know when something is not literal. The snake in the garden of eden is a metaphor for a liar and a deceiver. The fruit was a lie from the tree of knowledge not an apple or some other edible thing. Eve believed the lie and it ruined her relationship with Adam. I love how enlightened atheists always miss the obvious. Waiting until marriage for "relations" would most certainly cut down on STDs, deadbeat dads and broken homes. Many good things can be found within religion. Sure there is some hypocrisy. Ignoring the ten commandments and worshiping a man who is of this earth is a clear indication of hypocrisy. There are many snakes in our society. Our politicians and entertainers are clearly deceiving us.

"I love black people. I have black friends. I dated a black person before." this is what white Liberals say. scared to death that someone will discover their hidden racism. Republicans want everyone to be rich, happy, independent from the government. That's how you get to utopia, not with government bailouts, deviding people into groups (what the Democrat Party loves to do!), causing tension with class warefare tactics, race baiting etc. This is what your party does, you know it, you dislike it as much as I do, yet you defend it as much as you defend Obama. Obama doesnLt want or need your help. He's a pefect liberal machine unlike anything this country has seen before him. he wouldn't be-friend you, he's using you and catering just enough to keep your support. Look at the jobless rates in the black community: Gotten worse under Obama. So keep on believing the lies because the "Hope and Change" isn't here. Alot of people hurting. Especially in Darfur, Haiti, and too many places to list that are high on most Liberal minds

All you partisan morons are ruining the country. Please move. You give the president way too much credit. Congress has the real power. Congress (Democratic majority) under Bush gave $800 billion to big business (the same big business that outsources your job to the lowest bidder) then the republicans call someone irresponsible because they lost their 20 year job to a chinese person and can't pay their mortgage anymore because the only jobs out there are low paying fast food jobs. Then a Democratic congress and democratic president gave another $700 billion to the same big businesses that were stealing from you in the first place. You're all morons if you believe either party is any different. They confuse you with "social" agendas but they are all still just crooks trying to steal your money. Who cares about a mythbusters appearance? That's one move from a politician I actually don't mind.

You have twisted some facts. A Democratic congress in 2008 approved the bank bailout submitted by GOP Pres. Bush. Additionally, the GOP candidate for prez...McCain...stopped his campaign to rush back to DC and vote yes on the bill. After Obama was inaguarated he submitted the 700 billion stimulus bill to a Democratic congress which approved that bill AND that some GOP reps also cast a yea vote on. And the money from this bill did NOT go to big business. It went to state govts to keep firefighters, police, etc on the job and also reduced your taxes. Get your facts straight before stating you opinion.

$1.4 trillion dollars went to police and firemen? What are you smoking? You actually missed the part where I said they are all crooks. I'm well aware that Mr McCain voted for the bill as did a majority in both camps. The biggest beneficiary of the bailouts were investment and insurance banks. You obviously need to check your facts. I believe the number of cops, firemen and teachers was very minuscule and they were used to show naïve people like yourself that the government cares about the little people. Its all theater.

In other systems, the president will fill one of the roles and a prime minister or chancellor will fill the other role. That includes the nuts and bolts of running the country and the public appearance in what you may believe to be frivolous endeavors. technically hes half black and half white. also who cares what his skin color is? i dont understand why thats needs to be brought up all the time. its kind of a pathetic excuse to use for why some people do not like him. i believe the reason some people dont like him is because he ran on the cover of hope and change and for the most part we have seen neither. its the same old politics as usual. We are in a mountain of debt, jobless rates are though the roof and their doesnt seem to be a sense of urgency to become fiscally responsible anytime soon. and no amount of articulate words and "compassion" from our president is going to get us out of the current mess. quite frankly i am sick of all the fancy words and giant meaningless bills. until we turn back to our roots and start governing the way we have done in the past we will continue to tailspin. so just an fyi obama is not god and obama is not the devil. obama is just a typical politician who has a skill for good speeches. not much more then that.

Not true, get your facts straight please. Bush left most of the debt of any President to date by having these tax cuts that did nothing to add jobs and spent money on two wars. That is a economic disaster. More money ( War) out less money in (tax cuts). There is no time in history that the government handed out tax cuts while at war, except for Bush. One of the President's spending bills ( the auto bail out) is almost paid off and will make a profit, so you need to subtract that out of the deficit. It also saved a lot moref jobs then the bush tax cuts.

Well Chad... I see another one of your well written statements of the trash that the 'Tea Party' likes to recycle. I was all for them in the beginning... until they apparently started mixing in something extra with their tea... Anyways, if you actually breakdown yearly spending you will see that the debt has been steadily going up for about 30 years now. While there have been times of surpluses in the budget, most of the time the debt has climbed. About 9 years ago a man named George W Bush decided that with two wars he wanted to fight (which by the way they will never end, they have declared a holy war on us – they plan on fighting for the rest of their lives) and that he also wanted to use an outdated method of sparking the economy called the trickle down effect. It didn't work. Couple that with how the banks decided to play with out future unscruplously and you have a recipe for a true disaster called our National Debt. Now it is actually a fact that while many jobs have been lost during Obama's presidency a majority happened in his first few months in office. And since it can take several months to have a policy put in place and start to work he is still getting blamed for something he had no control over. It's like blaming Bush for Katrina. He didn't make the storm happen, all he could do is control his response to it (which that is another debate).

The part that gets me is that you have decided to judge his policies rather prematurely. It took over a decade for the meltdown to happen, it's going to take long time to fix and to believe that there is some sort of magical cure all for this situation means you are either smoking something or live in a dreamland. And actually the previous commenter that mentioned Hoover even has some of his facts wrong. He actually put several policies in place that prevented the Great Depression from being worse. And the actual causes of the depression were a result of the previous administration's policies. He did what he could to stop it but people still believe he caused the depression since it happened under his presidency.

Personally, there was one comment before now that I really do agree on– other than, you know, everyone not flaming the prez for promoting STEM. That comment was somebody's message to folks about bipartisanship– okay, so it works in the UK. Or worked– I don't know. Its not working here. We need to stop teaming up on each other and start working at a better America. It doesn't have to be one we can be proud of, yet– just one we can live in well enough to make a difference.

So can we stop with the partisan talk– republicans AND democrats– and start working together?

Yes and during the worst attack on our country our last president was sitting in a classroom of children and did nothing.... he didn't politely excuse himself to be apart of it he just sat there with a blank look on his face. Yes. That is the type of president that we deserve! Good grief! I understand having political and ideological differences with the president, but when you get upset because he takes a bit of time to encourage children to stay in school, get interested in math and science and lead our future – there is something seriously wrong with you.

It's classic, when he went on the View to speak with women about women's issues and did NOT go to the Boy Scout Jamboree he was criticized, but had he gone to the Jamboree he would have been criticized as well! He can't make a right step in your book which is absolutely ridiculous! You have already made up your mind that he is going to do everything wrong and therefore will never like anything he does. Well, it's not like Obama was just sitting around reading stories to school children while planes were being flown into The Twin Towers. That must have been another President having some priorities out of order. Figureheads have to be seen doing many things that demonstrate the importance of health, education and tradition, etc. All of these things together make up the mesh of American Society and as a whole, is as important a priority as any of the top ten.
When a leader makes special appearances, attends a meeting, entertains foreign Diplomats, goes to a funeral, and so forth, the country does not come to a screeching halt. In fact, you can be quite certain, there is an army of people working 24/7 on, well , pretty much EVERYTHING. The notion that high priority issues get put on the back burner whenever The President is, basically, making a Public Service Announcement, is silly.

It's no wonder that President Obama wants to inspire young people to pursue science and mathematics, because if Mythbusters is any indication, we are in big trouble.

MCO39, do you have a link to the experiment you mentioned in Greece? The myth busters did indeed use flat mirrors but angled them such that the overall effect would be a parabolic mirror.

MCO39 couldn't be more wrong if he tried to be! He says Americans can't "duplicate this system", then explains that it is used by radio telescopes and space probes. Guess who is #1 at those? China can't even pull off a space program in 2010 with a cheat sheet (boatloads of our technology they've been given or acquired). We were doing that in the 1960s! Don't think we don't know this, we do! Don't bother replying, I know you're a Chinese trying to make America look bad. But you're only making yourself look foolish! Go build yourself a high speed train so you can pretend to be Westernized while your countryside is filled with poverty!

Bob, the idea is to angle a series of parabolic mirrors rather than a series of flat mirrors. This allows you to take advantage of the full intensity of each mirror. A similar concept is used in the VLA:

Unfortunately I do not have a link to the 1970's experiment but it was reported in the popular media at the time so you should be able to look it up at a local library.

MCO39, parabolic mirrors only focus light at one distance. So the enemy fleet would have to sit at the right distance. Archimedes did not have access to modern day mirrors so he would need a lot more reflectors to make it work then we would.

Hey, Mr. President, how about doing something about the economy and getting unemployment back down to below 8%, where you said it would stay if we wasted those trillions you've added to the debt with NO POSITIVE RESULTS.

In case you can't see that far ahead, we need to improve the education of the youth today so that we can create jobs in the future. Yes, it'll take 10-15 years for the results to show, but if we don't act NOW, we'll be in a bigger hole 10 years from now.

Of course, our society has been eroding for years – decades, even. A mass of people who put Richard Nixon in office – not once, but twice? A mass of people who put GW Bush in our beloved White House – not once, but twice? Such a country is far from great. A little less flag-waving, please, and a little more objective thought!
