When it comes to Bristol Palin, folks are drinking gallons of the Haterade.
The younger Palin appears to be well on her way to becoming almost as big a lightening rod as her political mother, despite never having run for office herself. She's been criticized for everything from her romantic choices to her skills - or lack thereof - on “Dancing with the Stars," which she didn't even win, by the way.
There's even been conspiracy theories surrounding her participation in the show (allegedly Mommy made her do it!) and the voters who kept her in the running right up to the finals (allegedly some swift dialing Tea Party members!). You know things are bad when former "American Idol" contestant, Sanjaya, has to come to your defense.
So why so much venom directed at a single, teen mom from Alaska? One need only peruse CNN’s Marquee blog for glimpses of some of the complaints.
"My girlfriend watches that show and I saw the season finale," wrote one using the name Mike. "Bristol sucked, no way should she have made it that far, she was definitely having strings pulled."
"She did get fat though, " said one going by the name Sharp Knees about Palin's appearance while on "DWTS." " She wasn't that hefty even after she had her kid. Put down the fork!!!"
Ouch! Just imagine if Palin had won.
And it’s not just fans of the dancing competition who have slammed Palin. MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann named Palin “the (not really) worst person in the world” for her duties as an abstinence spokesperson given that she has a child out of wedlock.
“This is like saying George Bush kept us safe except for that 9/11 thing which doesn’t count,” he said. “Bristol Palin, abstinence role model…this time.”
Comedian Margaret Cho took to her blog to claim that Palin had been forced to dance by her mother (a claim the younger Palin refutes) who was allegedly looking for some good publicity to counter the media surrounding her daughter’s unplanned pregnancy.
Comic/reality television star Kathy Griffin was recently booed at the VH1 "Divas Salute the Troops" concert for joking that Palin “is the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight ... She gained, like, 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic. She's like the white Precious."
Palin has even been the subject of some intra-party dissing. Meghan McCain used "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" as her platform to criticized Bristol Palin for not voting in the mid-term election. "I think a lot of women worked really hard to give us the right to vote," McCain said. "Anyone that doesn't vote is just ridiculous."
To think, the pair could have been first daughter and vice daughter had things worked out differently in 2008.
So has Bristol Palin caught enough flack and should people now cut her some slack? Or is it only just the beginning the more she remains in the limelight?
